COPPADIS Study Group., [Background and purpose] Reduced facial expression of emotions is a very frequent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) and has been considered part of the motor features of the disease. However, the neural correlates of hypomimia and the relationship between hypomimia and other non-motor symptoms of PD are poorly understood., [Methods] The clinical and structural brain correlates of hypomimia were studied. For this purpose, cross-sectional data from the COPPADIS study database were used. Age, disease duration, levodopa equivalent daily dose, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III), severity of apathy and depression and global cognitive status were collected. At the imaging level, analyses based on gray matter volume and cortical thickness were used., [Results] After controlling for multiple confounding variables such as age or disease duration, the severity of hypomimia was shown to be indissociable from the UPDRS-III speech and bradykinesia items and was significantly related to the severity of apathy (β = 0.595; p, [Conclusion] Reduced facial expressivity in PD is related to the severity of symptoms of apathy and is mediated by the dysfunction of brain systems involved in motor control and in the recognition, integration and expression of emotions. Altres ajuts: Huntington's Disease Society of America Female Huntington's disease (HD) patients have consistently shown a faster clinical worsening than male, but the underlying mechanisms responsible for this observation remain unknown. Here, we describe how sex modifies the impact of neurodegeneration on brain atrophy and clinical severity in HD. Cerebrospinal fluid neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels were used as a biological measure of neurodegeneration, and brain atrophy was assessed by structural magnetic resonance imaging. We found that larger NfL values in women reflect higher brain atrophy and clinical severity than in men (p < 0.05 for an interaction model). - Abstract
Background: Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) exhibit a variable predominance of cognitive, behavioral and motor symptoms. A specific instrument focusing on the impact of cognitive impairment in HD over functional capacity is lacking. Objective: To address the need for a brief and specifically developed HD questionnaire able to capture functional aspects suspected to be sensitive to cognitive impairment. Methods: We developed and validated the "Huntington's Disease-Cognitive Functional Rating Scale" (HD-CFRS) in 78 symptomatic carriers of the Huntington's disease mutation. We also administered the HD-CFRS to a knowledgeable informant to measure the level of agreement. To explore the association between HD-CFRS scores and participants' cognitive status, we administered objective measures of cognition. Participants were classified as cognitively preserved (HD-NC), as having mild cognitive impairment (HD-MCI), or as having dementia (HD-Dem). Results: The HD-CFRS showed concurrent validity and internal consistency in the three groups. HD carriers and informants in the HD-NC group obtained similar HD-CFRS scores. However, in patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia, informers reported greater functional impairment than HD participants. The HD-CFRS total score showed strong correlations with measures assessing cognition. Conclusions: These findings support the utility of the HD-CFRS as a brief and reliable instrument to measure functional defects associated with cognitive impairment in HD. Background: The frequency of late-onset Huntington's disease (>59 years) is assumed to be low and the clinical course milder. However, previous literature on late-onset disease is scarce and inconclusive. Objective: Our aim is to study clinical characteristics of late-onset compared to common-onset HD patients in a large cohort of HD patients from the Registry database. Methods: Participants with late- and common-onset (30–50 years)were compared for first clinical symptoms, disease progression, CAG repeat size and family history. Participants with a missing CAG repeat size, a repeat size of ≤35 or a UHDRS motor score of ≤5 were excluded. Results: Of 6007 eligible participants, 687 had late-onset (11.4%) and 3216 (53.5%) common-onset HD. COPPADIS Study Group., Quality of life (QOL) plays an important role in independent living in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients, being crucial to know what factors impact QoL throughout the course of the disease. Here we identified predictors of QoL impairment in PD patients from a Spanish cohort. PD patients recruited from 35 centers of Spain from the COPPADIS cohort from January 2016, to November 2017, were followed up during 2 years. Health-related QoL (HRQoL) and global QoL (GQoL) were assessed with the 39-item Parkinson’s disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) and the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index (EUROHIS-QOL8), respectively, at baseline (V0) and at 24 months ± 1 month (V2). Clinically significant QoL impairment was defined as presenting an increase (PDQ-39SI) or decrement (EUROHIS-QOL8) at V2 ≥ 10% of the score at baseline (V0). A comparison with a control group was conducted for GQoL. GQoL did not change significantly in PD patients (N = 507; p = 0.686) or in the control group (N = 119; p = 0.192). La malaltia de Parkinson és una malaltia neurodegenerativa progressiva que afecta el sistema nerviós central, el que provoca l'aparició de símptomes motors i no motors. En aquest article, s'hi destaca la importància d'avaluar i estandarditzar els símptomes no motors, és a dir, el deteriorament cognitiu i alteracions conductuals, per un millor seguiment i tractament d'aquesta malaltia. La enfermedad de Parkinson es una enfermedad neurodegenerativa progresiva que afecta el sistema nervioso central, lo que provoca la aparición de síntomas motores y no motores. En este artículo, se destaca la importancia de evaluar y estandarizar los síntomas no motores (el deterioro cognitivo y alteraciones conductuales) para un mejor seguimiento y tratamiento de esta enfermedad. Beet root planting methods and the most appropriated type of trays for the production of beet-root seedlings, Beta vulgaris var. conditiva (Chenopodiaceae) are analyzed. Experiment evaluated characteristics of seedling growth and production. Treatments consisted of direct sowing, bare-root seedlings and seedlings grown on 128, 200 and 288-cell trays. Cells with the smallest substratum volumes showed an inferior performance in number of leaves and dry matter weight of the seedlings' aerial part. However, no effect of the substratum volume was reported in the root development. When all treatments were harvested at the same date, direct sowing resulted in larger total and commercial production. However, when the cycle was prolonged until the plants of each treatment had reached the established harvesting point, differences between the treatments of commercial production no longer existed Foram estudados métodos de plantio na cultura da beterraba, Beta vulgaris var. conditiva (Chenopodiaceae) e o tipo de bandeja mais apropriado para a produção de mudas. Constatou-se que as células com os menores volumes de substrato proporcionaram desempenho inferior em relação ao número de folhas e ao peso da matéria seca da parte aérea, mas não se observou efeito no desenvolvimento radicular. The effects of different periods with or without weeds in beet, cv. Tall Top Early Wonder, were evaluated. The treatments consisted of maintaining the culture in the presence or absence of weeds for periods of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after transplantation and direct sowing. Taking into account both crop yield and quality, the critical period for preventing weed interference for direct sowing beets was from 20 to 50 days after sowing. For transplanted beets, the total period where the crop should be kept free from weeds was 20 days and the period that precedes the interference was 30 days, both after transplantation.
