Abstract

The DIRAC experiment at CERN has achieved a sizeable production of $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms and has significantly improved the precision on its lifetime determination. From a sample of 21227 atomic pairs, a 4% measurement of the S-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering length difference $|a_0-a_2| = (.0.2533^{+0.0080}_{-0.0078}|_\mathrm{stat}.{}^{+0.0078}_{-0.0073}|_\mathrm{syst})M_{\pi^+}^{-1}$ has been attained, providing an important test of Chiral Perturbation Theory., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We derive an a priori error estimate for the numerical solution obtained by time and space discretization by the finite volume/finite element method of the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations. The numerical solution on a convenient polyhedral domain approximating a sufficiently smooth bounded domain is compared with an exact solution of the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations with a bounded density. Abstract

The proposed experiment is a further development of the DIRAC experiment already running at CERN PS. The observation of long-lived (metastable) states of $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms ($A_{2\pi}$) will be performed with the same setup. This observation opens a possibility to measure the energy difference between $ns$ and $np$ states and to determine the value of the combination $2a_0+a_2$ of S-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths in a model-independent way. In combination with the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime measurement providing the value $|a_0-a_2|$ DIRAC is in the position to get $a_0$ and $a_2$ separately on the basis of $A_{2\pi}$ data only.

Abstract

The proposed experiment is a further development of the DIRAC experiment already running at CERN PS. Up to now more than 21000 $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs originated from the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ($A_{2\pi}$) breakup were identified and the overall accuracy of the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime is about 9% in accordance with the DIRAC proposal. This measurement allowed to extract the difference $|a_0-a_2|$ of $s$-wave $\pi\pi$-scattering length with accuracy of 4.3%. The observation of long-lived (metastable) $A_{2\pi}$ states will be performed with the same setup. This observation opens a possibility to measure the energy difference between $ns$ and $np$ states and to determine the value of another combination $2a_0+a_2$ of $\pi\pi$ scattering length in a model-independent way. In combination with the first measurement it allows to get $a_0$ and $a_2$ separately. An additional measurement of the multiple scattering angles in different materials with accuracy better than 1% will be performed in parallel with the observation. This measurement is needed to improve the systematic accuracy in the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime for the data already collected in 2008--2010.

Abstract

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN (PS212) is to measure the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom lifetime with 10% precision. Such a measurement would yield a precision of 5% on the value of the $S$-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths combination $|a_0-a_2|$. Based on part of the collected data we present a first result on the lifetime, $\tau=[2.91 ^{+0.49}_{-0.62}]\times 10^{-15}$ s, and discuss the major systematic errors. This lifetime corresponds to $|a_0-a_2|=0.264 ^{+0.033}_{-0.020} m_{\pi}^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN is to measure with high precision the lifetime of the pi(+)pi(-) atom (A(2pi)), which is of order 3 x 10(-15) s, and thus to determine the s-wave pipi-scattering lengths difference \a(0) - a(2)\. A(2pi) atoms are detected through the characteristic features of pi(+)pi(-) pairs from the atom break-up (ionization) in the target. We report on a first high statistics atomic data sample obtained from p-Ni interactions at 24 GeV/c proton momentum and present the methods to separate the signal from the background. Abstract

This report describes activity on the subject program for the third year. Electronic modifications were made to the FM Lamb wave system during the period which resulted in a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of better than one order of magnitude. In addition, the use of a sound absorbing medium in the area of the transducers was found to significantly reduce 'crosstalk' and stray reflections. Laboratory testing with the FM Lamb wave system has proved the technique to be capable of detecting small 'flaws' or 'defects', but relatively insensitive to material property variations. A brief analytical investigation of a forked-coil eddy current system has shown that the technique can be effectively used to measure material properties of only certain alloys provided sheet thickness is simultaneously monitored. A theoretical and experimental investigation of beta backscatter has shown the method to be related to thin sheet hardness and surface finish by a second order effect. Theoretical and experimental work on a 'counterfeit waveguide' microwave technique for measuring material properties has been encouraging and further work is recommended to reduce the technique to practice. A survey of thin sheet manufacturers and users has established the fact that most of the present thin sheet problems requiring continuous on-line inspection are indigenous to the manufacture and fabrication of refractory materials. Abstract

The low-energy QCD predictions to be tested by the DIRAC experiment are revised. The experimental method, the setup characteristics and capabilities, along with first experimental results are reported. Preliminary analysis shows good detector performance: alignment error via $\Lambda$ mass measurement $m_\Lambda = 1115.6 MeV/c^2$ with $\sigma = 0.92 MeV/c^2$, $p \pi^-$ relative momentum resolution $\sigma_Q \approx 2.7 MeV/c$, and evidence for $\pi^+ The low-energy QCD predictions to be tested by the DIRAC experiment are revised. Abstract

The aim of the DIRAC experiment at CERN is to provide an accurate determination of S-wave pion-pion scattering lengths from the measurement of the lifetime of the pi+ pi- atom. The measurement will be done with precision comparable to the level of accuracy of theoretical predictions, formulated in the context of Chiral Perturbation Theory. Therefore, the understanding of chiral symmetry breaking of QCD will be submitted to a stringent test. 28. Analysis of immediate student outcomes following a change in gross anatomy laboratory teaching methodology.

Abstract

Objective:: To compare student performance following a change in laboratory teaching methodology from cadavers to models to virtual dissection table in a musculoskeletal gross anatomy course in a doctor of chiropractic program., Methods:: Three marking periods of laboratory and lecture examination scores from 3 consecutive academic calendar years were evaluated and compared using simple analysis as well as analysis of variance and post hoc t tests. The 1st cohort of students ( n = 352) utilized cadavers. The 2nd cohort of students ( n = 350) had anatomical models as their primary gross laboratory modality. The 3rd cohort of students ( n = 393) utilized virtual dissection tables., Results:: The midterm and final laboratory examination scores were evaluated and showed successive increase in aggregate averages between cohort 1 (mean = 76.1%), cohort 2 (mean = 81.4%), and cohort 3 (mean = 85.1%). Lecture examination scores remained consistent between the cohorts at 61.2%, 62.4%, and 61.1%, respectively. Significant improvements were seen in lab exam scores between cohorts ( F [2, 2113] = 58.6, p < .001), and no significant differences were seen in lecture exam scores., Conclusion:: Students utilizing virtual dissection tables scored higher on laboratory examinations than students having models or cadavers. However, they displayed a similar testing competency in lecture examinations, suggesting a possible change in laboratory examination difficulty between the cohorts but a similar knowledge base. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the long-term retention of student knowledge.

Abstract

Managed care programs have evolved in response to the escalating costs of healthcare in the United States. Expenses related to back pain represent a significant portion of these costs. Chiropractic physicians handle more back pain visits than do medical doctors and are playing an increasing role in the management of neuromusculoskeletal problems in general. Furthermore, chiropractic patients are more satisfied with their care than are patients of family physicians. A number of studies have shown chiropractic medicine to have high efficacy and cost-effectiveness. Its utilization for neuromusculoskeletal problems in the managed care setting may well offer competitive advantages. Using chiropractic physicians as gatekeepers for back pain would result in more expedient movement through the algorithmic process and facilitate treatment of the patient with acute back pain. Many medical facilities are enhancing their services by utilizing chiropractic physicians as gatekeepers for the diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Abstract

A comprehensive task analysis of the anesthetist's activities during coronary-artery bypass procedures was carried out using time-lapse cinematography. This film was analyzed frame by frame to detect types of activities and the proportion of time spent on each. Link analysis was used to reveal recurring sequences of activities. Of the 9 activity categories, the anesthetist spends the greatest portion of time observing the patient and scanning the entire operative and monitoring field. Ten to 15% of the time is spent logging data on the anesthetic record. The challenge for the anesthetist is to optimize his performance, and those under his direction, in the face of the changing workload resulting from variations in patients' conditions. Use of an automated monitoring system that charts patient vital signs would allow the anesthetist to apportion this time among other tasks.

The Euler buckling theory has been presented as evidence that spinal curves increase the spine's axial load carrying capacity. The Euler theory is however, derived for an initially straight beam or column and as such cannot be applied to initially curved structures, such as the human spine.
