In this paper, the feasibility of satellite remote sensing in detecting and predicting locations of buried objects in the archaeological site of Saruq Al-Hadid, United Arab Emirates (UAE) was investigated. Satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is proposed as the main technology for this initial investigation. Thousands of vessels travel around the world every day, making the safety, efficiency, and optimization of marine transportation essential. Therefore, the knowledge of bathymetry is crucial for a variety of maritime applications, such as shipping and navigation. Maritime applications have benefited from recent advancements in satellite navigation technology, which can utilize multi-spectral bands for retrieving information on water depth. As part of these efforts, this study combined deep learning techniques with satellite observations in order to improve the estimation of satellite-based bathymetry. The objective of this study is to develop a new method for estimating coastal bathymetry using Sentinel-2 images. Sentinel-2 was used here due to its high spatial resolution, which is desirable for bathymetry maps, as well as its visible bands, which are useful for estimating bathymetry. The conventional linear model approach using the satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) ratio (green to blue) was applied, and a new four-band ratio using the four visible bands of Sentienl-2 was proposed. In addition, three atmospheric correction models, Sen2Cor, ALOCITE, and C2RCC, were evaluated, and Sen2Cor was found to be the most effective model. Gradient boosting was also applied in this study to both the conventional band ratio and the proposed FVBR ratio. Compared to the green to blue ratio, the proposed ratio FVBR performed better, with R2 exceeding 0.8 when applied to 12 snapshots between January and December. The gradient boosting method was also found to provide better estimates of bathymetry than linear regression. According to findings of this study, the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, sediments, and atmospheric dust do not affect the estimated bathymetry. However, tidal oscillations were found to be a significant factor affecting satellite estimates of bathymetry.

The coasts and islands that flank Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s largest emirate, host the country’s most significant coastal and marine habitats including coral reefs. These reefs, although subject to a variety of pressures from urban and industrial encroachment and climate change, exhibit the highest thresholds for coral bleaching and mortality in the world. By reviewing and benchmarking global, regional and local coral reef conservation efforts, this study highlights the ecological importance and economic uniqueness of the UAE corals in light of the changing climate. The analysis provides a set of recommendations for coral reef management that includes an adapted institutional framework bringing together stakeholders, scientists, and managers. These recommendations are provided to guide coral reef conservation efforts regionally and in jurisdictions with comparable environmental challenges.

HelioClim-3 (HC3) is a database providing time series of the surface downwelling solar irradiance that are computed from images of the Meteosat satellites. This paper presents the validation results of the hourly global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and direct normal irradiance (DNI), i.e., beam irradiance at normal incidence, of versions four and five of HC3 at seven Egyptian sites. The validation is performed for all-sky conditions, as well as cloud-free conditions. Both versions of HC3 provide similar performances whatever the conditions. Another comparison is made with the estimates provided by the McClear database that is restricted to cloud-free conditions. All databases capture well the temporal variability of the GHI in all conditions, McClear being superior for cloud-free cases. In cloud-free conditions for the GHI, the relative root mean square error (RMSE) are fairly similar, ranging from 6% to 15%; both HC3 databases exhibit a smaller bias than McClear. McClear offers an overall better performance for the cloud-free DNI estimates. For all-sky conditions, the relative RMSE for GHI ranges from 10% to 22%, except one station, while, for the DNI, the results are not so good for the two stations with DNI measurements.

This study addresses the issue of the variability and heterogeneity problems that are expected from a sensor with a larger footprint having homogenous and heterogeneous sub-pixels. Improved understanding of spatial variability of soil surface characteristics such as land cover and vegetation in larger footprint are critical in remote sensing based soil moisture retrieval. This study analyzes the sub-pixel variability (standard deviation of sub-grid pixels) of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and SAR backscatter. Back-propagation neural network was used for soil moisture retrieval from active microwave remote sensing data from Southern Great Plains of Oklahoma. The effect of land cover heterogeneity (number of different vegetation species within pixels) on soil moisture retrieval using active microwave remote sensing data was investigated. The presence of heterogeneous vegetation cover reduced the accuracy of the derived soil moisture using microwave remote sensing data. The results from this study can be used to characterize the uncertainty in soil moisture retrieval in the context of Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) mission which will have larger footprint.

Satellite remote sensing observations have the potential for efficient and reliable mapping of spatial soil moisture distributions. However, soil moisture retrievals from active microwave remote sensing data are typically complex due to inherent difficulty in characterizing interactions among land surface parameters that contribute to the retrieval process. Therefore, adequate physical mathematical descriptions of microwave backscatter interaction with parameters such as land cover, vegetation density, and soil characteristics are not readily available. In such condition, non-parametric models could be used as possible alternative for better understanding the impact of variables in the retrieval process and relating it in the absence of exact formulation. In this study, non-parametric methods such as neural networks, fuzzy logic are used to retrieve soil moisture from active microwave remote sensing data. The inclusion of soil characteristics and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from infrared and visible measurement, have significantly improved soil moisture retrievals and reduced root mean square error (RMSE) by around 30% in the retrievals. Soil moisture derived from these methods was compared with ESTAR soil moisture (RMSE ~4.0%) and field soil moisture measurements (RMSE ~6.5%). Additionally, the study showed that soil moisture retrievals from highly vegetated areas are less accurate than bare soil areas.

Regionally calibrated algorithms for water quality are strongly needed, especially for optically complex waters such as coastal areas in the Arabian Gulf. In this study, a regional qualitative algorithm was proposed to retrieve seawater transparency, with Secchi disk depth (SDD) as a surrogate, in the Arabian Gulf. A two-step process was carried out, first estimating the diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance at 490 nm (Kd_490) from MODIS/Aqua imagery and then SDD based on empirical correlations with Kd_490. Three satellite derived Kd products were tested and assessed against a set of in situ measurements, and one from a semi-analytical algorithm based on inherent optical properties gave the best performance with a R2 of 0.62. Comparisons between the performances of SDD models developed in this study and those established in other regions indicated higher accuracy of our proposed model for the Gulf region. The potential factors causing uncertainties of the proposed algorithm were also discussed. Seasonal and inter-annual variations of SDD over the entire Gulf were demonstrated using a 14-year time series of MODIS/Aqua data from 2002 to 2015. High SDD values were generally observed in summer while low values were found in winter. Inter-annual variations of SDD did not shown any significant trend with exceptions during algal bloom outbreaks that resulted in low SDD.
