6. Coupling Effects in Multi-Stage Laser Wake-field Acceleration of Electrons

Abstract

Staging laser wake-field acceleration is considered as a necessary technique for developing full-optical jitter-free electron accelerators. Splitting of the acceleration length into several technical parts with their lengths smaller than the dephasing length and with independent laser drivers allows generation of stable, reproducible acceleration fields. Temporal and spatial coupling of pre-accelerated electron bunches for their injection in the acceleration phase of a successive laser pulse wake field is the key part of the staging laser-driven acceleration. Here, characterization of the coupling is performed with dense, stable, a narrow energy band <3% and energy selectable electron beams with charges ~1.6 pC and energy ~10 MeV generated from a laser plasma cathode. Cumulative focusing of electron bunches in a low density pre-plasma, exhibiting the Budker- Bennett effect, is shown to result in the efficient injection of electrons even with a long distance between the injector and the booster in the laser pulse wake. Measured characteristics of electron beams modified by the booster wake field agree well with those obtained by multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

7. Effects of hole-boring and relativistic transparency on particle acceleration in overdense plasma irradiated by short multi-PW laser pulses

Abstract

Propagation of short and ultra-intense laser pulses in a semi-infinite space of overdense hydrogen plasma is analyzed via fully-relativistic, real geometry particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations including radiation friction. The relativistic transparency and hole-boring regimes are found to be sensitive to the transverse plasma field, backward light reflection, and laser pulse filamentation. For laser intensities approaching $I\sim10^{24}$ W/cm$^2$ the direct laser acceleration of protons, along with ion Coulomb explosion, results in their injection into the acceleration phase of the compressed electron wave at the front of the laser pulses. The protons are observed to be accelerated up to 10-20 GeV with densities around a few times the critical density. The effect strongly depends on initial density and laser intensity disappearing with initial density increase and intensity decrease.

Abstract

Interaction of axisymmetrically-polarized (radially or azimuthally-polarized), relativistically intense laser pulses (ALP) with under-dense plasma is shown experimentally to be different from the interaction of conventional Gaussian pulses. The difference is clearly observed in distinct spectra of scattered laser light as well as in appearance of a strong side emission of second harmonic in the vicinity of focus spot. According 3D particle-in-cell simulations, this is a result of instability in the propagation of ALP in under-dense plasma. Laser wakefield acceleration of electrons by ALP, therefore, is less efficient than that by Gaussian laser pulses but ALP may be interesting for efficient electron self-injection., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Propagation of relativistically intense azimuthally or radially polarized laser pulses (RPP) in underdense plasmas is demonstrated to be unstable, via 3D particle-in-cell simulation and disregarding the Kerr non-linearity. Strong pulse filamentation occurs for RPP in transversely uniform plasma with an increment, $\Gamma$, close to the well-known one depending on acceleration, $\alpha$, and modulated density gradient length, $L$, as $\Gamma \approx (\alpha/L)^{1/2}$. Abstract

Nonlinear axisymmetric cylindrical plasma oscillations in magnetized collisionless plasmas are a model for the electron fluid collapse on the axis behind an ultrashort relativisically intense laser pulse exciting a plasma wake wave. We present an analytical description of the strongly nonlinear oscillations showing that the magnetic field prevents closing of the cavity formed behind the laser pulse. This effect is demonstrated with 3D PIC simulations of the laser-plasma interaction. An analysis of the betatron oscillations of fast electrons in the presence of the magnetic field reveals a characteristic "Four-Ray Star" pattern which has been observed in the image of the electron bunch in experiments [T. Abstract

Gluckstern’s adjustable permanent magnet quadrupole (PMQ) lens based on five rings is revisited to achieve a compact focusing system for laser-accelerated beams. The first prototype was fabricated for bore diameter of 50 mm. The integrated gradient was up to 6.8 T. A new PMQ with a bore diameter of 25 mm is under fabrication based on the same geometry. While the first prototype unit was developed for the final focus magnet of the ILC, the sec-ond unit is the first doublet element for laser-accelerated electron beam focusing to be combined with this first unit. 26. Light source based on a 100 mm-long monolithic undulator magnet with a very short 4 mm-period length

Abstract

A novel method to fabricate undulator magnets of a-few-millimetre-period length is being explored. Plate-type magnets, 100 mm-long with 4 mm-period length, have been successfully fabricated. They produce an undulator field of approximately 3 kG at a gap of 1.6 mm. Prototype undulators based on this technology have been constructed. Field measurements and characterization show that the quality of the undulator field of these plate magnets is sufficient for an undulator light source, and the calculated spectrum shows that the fundamental radiation emitted from this field is quite satisfactory. Test experiments for light generation using a real electron beam have been carried out at a test accelerator at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University, Japan, which is able to realize optics conditions to accept a very short gap of 1.6 mm. First observation and characterization of blue light was successfully accomplished.

27. Laser-plasma electron acceleration towards a compact XFEL in Japan

Abstract

In Japan we are conducting a laser-plasma acceleration (LPA) project aiming a compact X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) system and a compact carbon ion injector for cancer therapy including efficient laser driver development. In this talk we will focus on the laser electron acceleration part. Our LPA electron beam platform is located in the SPring-8 Center site at RIKEN, Japan, where the prototype XFEL of SACLA was tested. In the platform a Ti:sapphire laser system is installed and it can deliver three synchronized laser pulses (~20 – 30 fs) with pulse energies of 1 J, 2 J, and 10 J. Our strategy is staged electron acceleration using these pulses by manipulating electron phase space to obtain monoenergetic electron beams. In this talk we present our recent results on ~250 MeV, reproducible, quasi-monoenergetic electron production, undulator radiation test, etc. *This work was supported by JST-Mirai Program Grant Number JPMJMI17A1, Japan., IAS Program on High Energy Physics (HEP 2021)

In the presentation, we show the design and our approach to achieve soft X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) by using staged laser plasma acceleration (LPA) of electrons.The staged LPA consists of several functionalized stages such as electron injector, phase rotation, and energy booster to manipulate electron beams to satisfy the requirements for an XFEL. Abstract

Effects of ionization injection in low and high Z gas mixtures for the laser wake field acceleration of electrons are analyzed with the use of balance equations and particle-in- cell simulations via test probe particle trajectories in realistic plasma fields and direct simulations of charge loading during the ionization process. It is shown that electrons appearing at the maximum of laser pulse field after optical ionization are trapped in the first bucket of the laser pulse wake. Electrons, which are produced by optical field ionization at the front of laser pulse, propagate backwards; some of them are trapped in the second bucket, third bucket and so on. The efficiency of ionization injection is not high, several pC/mm/bucket. This injection becomes competitive with wave breaking injection at lower plasma density and over a rather narrow range of laser pulse intensity.

Abstract

International audience; The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ('European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications') aims at producing a design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. EuPRAXIA started in November 2015 and will deliver the design report in October 2019. EuPRAXIA aims to be included on the ESFRI roadmap in 2020.

Abstract

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission from discharge produced plasma with the coaxial injection of fuel vapor (tin and lithium) produced by laser ablation is experimentally studied. Multiple plasma pinches preceding a strong and long recombination radiation of EUV are observed in the first half cycle of a sinusoidal discharge current. Due to the time-of-flight control type of the discharge, the shape of pinch radiation pulses is almost identical. With the coaxial injection of time-of-flight controlled discharges, the highest brightness of EUV emission (maximum extracted energy of 244.3 mJ/2π sr per pulse with the emitter size of ∼1×0.3 mm2 in full width at half maximum) is provided with efficiency exceeding 2% of deposited energy into the plasma (or 1% of dissipated energy in the discharge) due to a much better matching with the optimal plasma parameters in the recombination regime and a decrease in the off-duty factor. Stability of emitting plasma of the repetitive pinches is essentially improved with use of a second laser pulse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A way toward a quasicontinuous extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation source is proposed and explored. Tin and lithium vapor discharges with the lateral laser-ablation injection are experimentally studied as possible efficient sources of quasicontinuous emission of EUV radiation at a wavelength of 13.5 nm. It is shown that the time-of-flight control of optimal plasma parameters by means of varying ablating laser pulse parameters provides a considerable elongation of maximal-power EUV emission with an overall efficiency of 0.1% and with an energy output exceeding 1% of the energy deposited in the discharge plasma. Abstract

In expansion cooling phase of pinched nitrogen plasma generated by fast capillary discharge, it might be possible to realize lasing a Blamer α recombination SXRL, which requires a rapid cooling of nonequilibrium plasma. It is effective to decrease the discharge current rapidly in reducing the additional heating caused by the joule heating and the magnetic compression of plasma as quickly as possible. The shaping of discharge current waveform was demonstrated with a transmission line and its effect on expanding plasma dynamics were investigated through magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) calculation, and validity of the MHD calculation in the expansion phase was shown using the discharge photographs taken by using a high speed camera. As a result, strong radiation from the H-like N ion at the maximum pinch, which is in the current decay phase of the triangular current with peak amplitude of over 70 kA and pulse width of 60 ns, has been confirmed in x-ray photodiode signals at wavelength of less than 2.5 nm, to clarify the existence of the Lyman series and continuum of the H-like N ion. Without additional heating by the discharge current after the generation of the fully stripped nitrogen ions, it might be possible to generate the population inversion between the principal quantum number n = 2 and 3.
