1. Amendment of the numerical dispersion in particle-in-cell methods for evaluation of charges of self-injected electron bunches in the laser wakefield acceleration

Abstract

Total charge and energy evaluations for the electron beams generated in the laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) is the primary step in the determination of the required target and laser parameters. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations is an efficient numerical tool that can provide such evaluations unless the effect of numerical dispersion is not diminished. The numerical dispersion, which is specific for the PIC modeling, affects not only the dephasing lengths in LWFA but also the total amount of the self-injected electrons. A numerical error of the order of $10^{-4}-10^{-3}$ in the calculation of the speed of light results in a significant error in the total injected charge and energy gain of the accelerated electron bunches. In the standard numerical approach, the numerical correction of the speed of light either requires infinitely small spatial grid resolution (which needs large computation platform) or force to compromise with the numerical accuracy. A simple and easy to implement numerical scheme is shown to suppress the numerical dispersion of the electromagnetic pulse in PIC simulations even with a modest spatial resolution, and without any special treatments to the core structure of the numerical algorithm. 2. Electron Beam Chirp Dexterity in Staging Laser Wakefield Acceleration

Abstract

Particle energy chirp is shown to be a useful instrument in the staging laser wake field acceleration directed to generation of high-quality dense electron beams. The chirp is a necessary tool to compensate non-uniformity of acceleration field in longitudinal direction and achieve essential reduction of energy dispersion. This is demonstrated via particle-in-cell simulations exploiting the splitting technique for plasma and beam electrons. Properly chosen beam chirps allow decrease in the energy dispersion of order of magnitude in every single stage during acceleration to the GeV energy range.

Abstract

Effects of ionization injection in low and high Z gas mixtures for the laser wake field acceleration of electrons are analyzed with the use of balance equations and particle-in-cell simulations via test probe particle trajectories in realistic plasma fields and direct simulations of charge loading during the ionization process. It is shown that electrons appearing at the maximum of laser pulse field after optical ionization are trapped in the first bucket of the laser pulse wake. Electrons, which are produced by optical field ionization at the front of laser pulse, propagate backwards; some of them are trapped in the second bucket, third bucket and so on. The efficiency of ionization injection is not high, several pC/mm/bucket. This injection becomes competitive with wave breaking injection at lower plasma density and over a rather narrow range of laser pulse intensity., Comment: 12 figures

Abstract

The multi-stage technique for laser driven acceleration of electrons become a critical part of full-optical, jitter-free accelerators. Use of several independent laser drivers and shorter length plasma targets allows the stable and reproducible acceleration of electron bunches (or beam) in the GeV energies with lower energy spreads. At the same time the charge coupling, necessary for efficient acceleration in the consecutive acceleration stage(s), depends collectively on the parameters of the injected electron beam, the booster stage, and the non-linear transverse dynamics of the electron beam in the laser pulse wake. An unmatched electron beam injected in the booster stage(s), and its non-linear transverse evolution may result in perturbation and even reduction of the field strength in the acceleration phase of the wakefield. Analysis and characterization of charge coupling in multi-stage laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) become ultimately important. Here, we investigate two-stage LWFA via fully relativistic multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, and underlying the most critical parameters, which affect the efficient coupling and acceleration of the electron beam in the booster stage., Comment: 10 figures

Abstract

Non-linear cascade scattering of intense, tightly focused laser pulses by relativistic electrons is studied numerically in the classical approximation including the radiation damping for the quantum parameter hwx-ray/E<1 and an arbitrary radiation parameter Kai. The electron energy loss, along with its side scattering by the ponderomotive force, makes the scattering in the vicinity of high laser field nearly impossible at high electron energies. The use of a second, co-propagating laser pulse as a booster is shown to solve this problem.

Abstract

We present a benchmark study for the adsorption of a large pi-conjugated organic molecule on different noble metal surfaces, which is based on X-ray standing wave (XSW) measurements and density functional theory calculations with van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The bonding distances of diindenoperylene on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111) surfaces (2.51 A, 3.01 A, and 3.10 A, respectively) determined with the normal incidence XSW technique are compared with calculations. Excellent agreement with the experimental data, i.e. deviations less than 0.1 A, is achieved using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional with vdW interactions that include the collective response of substrate electrons (PBE+vdW^{surf} method). Noteworthy, the calculations show that the vdW contribution to the adsorption energy increases in the order Au(111) < Ag(111) < Cu(111)., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

An external static magnetic field with its strength B~10T may result in the laser wake wave-breaking upon changing the electron motion in the vicinity of maximal density ramp of a wave period. This, as shown by numerical simulations, can change the resonance character of the electron self-injection in the laser wake-field; a total charge loaded in the acceleration phase of laser pulse wake can be controlled by a proper choice of the magnetic field strength.

Abstract

In order to investigate the orientational ordering of molecular dipoles and the associated electronic properties, we studied the adsorption of chlorogallium phthalocyanine molecules (GaClPc, Pc=C_32N_8H_16) on Cu(111) using the X-ray standing wave technique, photoelectron spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. We find that for sub-monolayer coverages on Cu(111) the majority of GaClPc molecules adsorb in a 'Cl-down' configuration by forming a covalent bond to the substrate. For bilayer coverages the XSW data indicate a co-existence of the 'Cl-down' and 'Cl-up' configuration on the substrate. The structural details established for both cases and supplementary calculations of the adsorbate system allow us to analyze the observed change of the work function., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We are developing such system based on staging laser acceleration at LAPLACIAN, RIKEN SPring-8 center aiming for future compact X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). In staging acceleration, several separate-function stages are employed as standard radio-frequency linear accelerators. We start experiments with two-stages: an electron injector and a booster accelerator. Because the beam quality even with state-of-art LWFA is not sufficient for XFELs, we need further improvement as well as reproducibility. To mitigate this issue we consider beam matching between stages as indispensable. We are developing plasma monitors and electron beams monitors. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. Abstract

The adsorption of molecular acceptors is a viable method for tuning the work function of metal electrodes. This, in turn, enables adjusting charge injection barriers between the electrode and organic semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate the potential of pyrene-tetraone (PyT) and its derivatives dibromopyrene-tetraone (Br-PyT) and dinitropyrene-tetraone (NO2-PyT) for modifying the electronic properties of Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces. The systems are investigated by complementary theoretical and experimental approaches, including photoelectron spectroscopy, the X-ray standing wave technique, and density functional theory simulations. For some of the investigated interfaces the trends expected for Fermi-level pinning are observed, i.e., an increase of the metal work function along with increasing molecular electron affinity and the same work function for Au and Ag with monolayer acceptor coverage. Substantial deviations are, however, found for Br-PyT/Ag(111) and NO2-PyT/Ag(111), where in the latter case an adsorption-induced work function increase of as much as 1.6 eV is observed. This behavior is explained as arising from a face-on to edge-on reorientation of molecules in the monolayer. Our calculations show that for an edge-on orientation much larger work-function changes can be expected despite the prevalence of Fermi-level pinning. This is primarily ascribed to a change of the electron affinity of the adsorbate layer that results from a change of the molecular orientation. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of how changing the molecular electron affinity as well as the adsorbate structure impacts the electronic properties of electrodes.

Abstract

Energy-level alignment at organic-metal interfaces plays a crucial role for the performance of organic electronic devices. However, reliable models to predict energetics at strongly coupled interfaces are still lacking. We elucidate contact formation of 1,2,5,6,9,10-coronenehexone (COHON) to the (1 1 1)-surfaces of coinage metals by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the x-ray standing wave technique, and density functional theory calculations. While for low COHON thicknesses, the work-functions of the systems vary considerably, for thicker organic films Fermi-level pinning leads to identical work functions of 5.2 eV for all COHON-covered metals irrespective of the pristine substrate work function and the interfacial interaction strength.

Abstract

The structural properties of coevaporated thin films of pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene (PFP) on SiO2 were studied using x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. Reciprocal space maps of the coevaporated thin films with different volume fractions reveal the coexistence of two different molecular mixed PEN-PFP phases together with the pure PEN and PFP crystallites. The crystal structure of PEN:PFP blends does not change continuously with volume fraction, instead the proportion of the appropriate phases changes, as seen from the diffraction analysis. Additional temperature dependent experiments reveal that the fraction of the two mixed PEN-PFP phases varies with growth temperature. The λ-phase (molecular plane parallel to the substrate) is metastable and induced by low growth temperature. The σ-phase (molecular plane nearly perpendicular to the substrate) is thermally stable and nucleates predominantly at high growth temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In expansion cooling phase of pinched nitrogen plasma generated by fast capillary discharge, it might be possible to realize lasing a Blamer α recombination SXRL, which requires a rapid cooling of nonequilibrium plasma. It is effective to decrease the discharge current rapidly in reducing the additional heating caused by the joule heating and the magnetic compression of plasma as quickly as possible. The shaping of discharge current waveform was demonstrated with a transmission line and its effect on expanding plasma dynamics were investigated through magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) calculation, and validity of the MHD calculation in the expansion phase was shown using the discharge photographs taken by using a high speed camera. As a result, strong radiation from the H-like N ion at the maximum pinch, which is in the current decay phase of the triangular current with peak amplitude of over 70 kA and pulse width of 60 ns, has been confirmed in x-ray photodiode signals at wavelength of less than 2.5 nm, to clarify the existence of the Lyman series and continuum of the H-like N ion. Without additional heating by the discharge current after the generation of the fully stripped nitrogen ions, it might be possible to generate the population inversion between the principal quantum number n=2 and 3. Abstract

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ("European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications") is preparing a conceptual design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. EuPRAXIA started in November 2015 and will deliver the design report in October 2019. EuPRAXIA aims to be included on the ESFRI roadmap in 2020.

Abstract

A combination of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and penning ionization electron spectroscopy (PIES) with different surface sensitivities are used for examining the surface electronic structure of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin films coated with various coating parameters. It is shown that the interchain [pi]-[pi] interaction and the distribution of the electron density contributed from the polymer backbone can be controlled in the surface region of thin films by varying the coating parameters.

Abstract

The adsorption of molecular acceptors is a viable method for tuning the work function of metal electrodes. This, in turn, enables adjusting charge injection barriers between the electrode and organic semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate the potential of pyrene-tetraone (PyT) and its derivatives dibromopyrene-tetraone (Br-PyT) and dinitropyrene-tetraone (NO2-PyT) for modifying the electronic properties of Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces. The systems are investigated by complementary theoretical and experimental approaches, including photoelectron spectroscopy, the X-ray standing wave technique, and density functional theory simulations. For some of the investigated interfaces the trends expected for Fermi-level pinning are observed, i.e., an increase of the metal work function along with increasing molecular electron affinity and the same work function for Au and Ag with monolayer acceptor coverage. Substantial deviations are, however, found for Br-PyT/Ag(111) and NO2-PyT/Ag(111), where in the latter case an adsorption-induced work function increase of as much as 1.6 eV is observed. This behavior is explained as arising from a face-on to edge-on reorientation of molecules in the monolayer. Our calculations show that for an edge-on orientation much larger work-function changes can be expected despite the prevalence of Fermi-level pinning. This is primarily ascribed to a change of the electron affinity of the adsorbate layer that results from a change of the molecular orientation. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of how changing the molecular electron affinity as well as the adsorbate structure impacts the electronic properties of electrodes.

Abstract

An external static magnetic field with its strength B~10T may result in the laser wake wave-breaking upon changing the electron motion in the vicinity of maximal density ramp of a wave period. This, as shown by numerical simulations, can change the resonance character of the electron self-injection in the laser wake-field; a total charge loaded in the acceleration phase of laser pulse wake can be controlled by a proper choice of the magnetic field strength.
