Patrick Leigh Fermor’s travel narrative A Time of Gifts stages the liminal condition of the future writer leaving England in 1933 and aiming to reach Constantinople on foot. As he crosses Central Europe his digressions into medieval, Renaissance and modern European history function as distorted mirrors to the present-day history of political hostility. Forcing us to adjust our focus through repeated forms of displacement, Fermor allows us to share the narrator’s vulnerable position and to embark on his quest for poetic, pictorial and historical fragments that spur us to look beyond “the long night ahead” (TG 357). Le récit de voyage de Patrick Leigh Fermor, A Time of Gifts, met en scène la situation fragile du futur écrivain quittant l’Angleterre en 1933 pour atteindre Constantinople à pied. Tout au long de sa traversée de l’Europe centrale, ses digressions sur le Moyen-Âge, la Renaissance et l’Histoire moderne européenne offrent un contrepoint aux politiques contemporaines marquées par l’hostilité. Fermor joue de multiples formes de déplacement pour partager avec ses lecteurs sa propre vulnérabilité et sa quête de fragments poétiques, picturaux et historiques qui nous entraîne au-delà de la « longue nuit qui approche » (TG 357).

Créé en 2019 au Marstall Theater de Munich, le diptyque Kassandra/Prometheus. Recht auf Welt du dramaturge Kevin Rittberger aborde sous deux angles la question de la migration. Kassandra oder die Welt als Ende der Vorstellung retrace le parcours fictif de Blessing, depuis son départ contraint de son village du Niger jusqu’à sa noyade en Méditerranée. La seconde pièce, Prometheus. Wir Anfänge, constitue une relecture du Prométhée enchaîné d’Eschyle, dans laquelle la migration et l’exil s’inscrivent dans le tableau plus large d’une humanité à la dérive. Par ce double angle, le dramaturge tente « de saisir le mouvement de la migration contemporaine et, pour ce faire, de dire en quoi elle nous traverse et nous transforme » (Michel Agier). À partir de témoignages qu’il a recueillis, Rittberger opte dans la première pour une dramaturgie en grande partie réaliste dans laquelle le parcours de la protagoniste reflète la condition des migrants. Pour autant, la problématisation d’une possible saisie du réel par le récit, quelle qu’en soit la nature, n’en est pas moins insérée dans le déroulement de la fiction dramatique, notamment à travers les personnages d’un journaliste et d’une documentariste. Le langage lui-même fait l’objet d’une réflexion implicite dans la pièce, ce que permettent de mettre en évidence les réflexions de Jacques Derrida sur la notion d’hospitalité. Le second volet du diptyque permet un élargissement de la focale. L’idéologie de la croissance effrénée a conduit à l’échelle mondiale à l’asservissement de la nature et de l’humain, et le déplacement forcé des populations en constitue une des illustrations. Par sa relecture des personnages de Prométhée et Io notamment, Rittberger n’en esquisse pas moins la possibilité d’une renaissance, fondée sur le dépassement de l’opposition nature/culture et d’une pensée binaire de l’altérité culturelle. Das zweite Stück, Prometheus. Wir Anfänge, ist eine Neuinterpretation des Gefesselten Prometheus des Aischylos, in der Migration und Exil in das Gesamttableau einer sich im Niedergang befindenden Menschheit eingebettet sind. Durch diesen doppelten Blickwinkel versucht der Dramatiker „die Bewegung der zeitgenössischen Migration zu erfassen, indem er zum Ausdruck bringt, inwiefern sie durch uns hindurch geht und uns verändert“ (Michel Agier). Er entscheidet sich im ersten Stück für eine weitgehend realistische, auf Gesprächen beruhende Dramaturgie, in der die Lebensgeschichte der Protagonistin die Situation von Migranten*innen widerspiegelt. Indem die Figuren eines Journalisten und einer Dokumentarfilmerin ihre eigene Position als Berichterstatter*in problematisieren, wird auch die Frage nach einer möglichen Erfassung von Realität, hier des Schicksals von Geflüchteten, zum Gegenstand der dramatischen Handlung. Nicht zuletzt wird auch die Sprache selbst im Stück kritisch reflektiert, was anhand von Jacques Derridas Überlegungen zum Begriff der „Hospitalität“ verdeutlicht werden kann. Der zweite Teil des Diptychons erweitert den Fokus durch die Aussage, die Ideologie des hemmungslosen Wachstums habe weltweit zu einer Unterwerfung von Natur und Mensch geführt, die ganze Bevölkerungsgruppen zur Migration zwingt. Auf der Folie des Mythos, insbesondere durch die Neuinterpretation der Figuren Prometheus und Io, skizziert Rittberger trotzdem die Möglichkeit eines Neubeginns, deren Voraussetzungen angedeutet werden: Diese beruhe auf der radikalen Abkehr von einem konfliktträchtigen binären Denken, das Natur und Kultur, das „Eigene“ und das „Fremde“ gegeneinander ausspielt. The second play, Prometheus. Wir Anfänge, is a re-reading of Aeschylus’ Prometheus in Chains, in which migration and exile are part of the depiction of a humanity adrift. Through this double perspective, the playwright attempts to “capture the movement of contemporary migration by expressing the extent to which it passes through us and changes us” (Michel Agier). In the first play, he opts for a largely realistic dramaturgy based on conversations, in which the protagonist’s journey reflects the condition of migrants. However, the problematisation of a possible capture of reality through narrative, whatever its nature, is inserted into the development of the dramatic fiction, notably through the characters of a journalist and a documentary filmmaker. Language itself is the subject of an implicit reflection in the play, which is highlighted by Jacques Derrida’s reflections on the concept of “hospitality”. The second part of the diptych broadens the focus by stating that the ideology of unrestrained growth has led to the enslavement of nature and mankind on a global scale, forcing entire populations to migrate. Through his re-interpretation of the characters of Prometheus and Io in particular, Rittberger nonetheless sketches out the possibility of a new beginning, based on the radical rejection of a conflict-prone binary thinking that plays off against each other nature and culture, the “own” and the “foreign”.

It’s a special pleasure when the translator is himself a poet and therefore capable of expressing meaning through the heartbeat of sound and rhythm; a process of unveiling the verse, while preserving its central conceit. The translator is challenged to clearly render words that are unutterable, incompatible, perhaps even untranslatable at first sight. It’s a process of bridge building, of border crossing; an act of linguistic, artistic, and spiritual hospitality.

Les professionnels puis les chercheurs anglophones désignent désormais le secteur économique des cafés, hôtels et restaurants sous l’appellation « hospitality industry ». Même si la presse professionnelle commence à utiliser le vocable « industrie de l’hospitalité », les chercheurs français qui ont étudié l’hospitalité s’y refusent, considérant que l’hospitalité ne peut être monnayée. Pourtant, si l’on définit l’hospitalité comme le « partage du ‘chez-soi’« , on repère des formes d’hospitalité touristique : l’hospitalité domestique, l’hospitalité territoriale et l’hospitalité commerciale. Cela amène à se demander si l’hôtellerie-restauration est vraiment une industrie qui pratique l’hospitalité. Ou vaut-il mieux parler d’industrie de l’accueil ? English-speaking professionals and researchers now refer to the hotel and catering industry as the “hospitality industry.” Although the French press is beginning to use the term “industrie de l’hospitalité,” French researchers who studied hospitality refuse to do so, considering that hospitality cannot be monetized. However, if we define hospitality as “sharing one’s own home,” we can identify forms of tourism hospitality : domestic hospitality, territorial hospitality, and commercial hospitality. This raises the question of whether the hotel and restaurant industry is really a hospitality industry. Or would it be better to talk about a welcome industry ?

In Michael Crummey’s Galore, whose narrative is driven by the arrivals of newcomers into a Newfoundland coastal community, the interplay between hospitality and hostility offers a lens through which the author’s concern with “the lore of the place” can be productively studied. Drawing on the contemporary reassessment of the notion of place, this paper examines how the novel’s representation of (in)hospitality evinces a critical engagement with the attachment to continuity, the search for origins and the need for emplacement, which ultimately disengages the text from discourses of autochthony. Dans Galore, roman de Michael Crummey dont l’intrigue est rythmée par l’arrivée d’étrangers dans une communauté côtière de Terre-Neuve, la tension entre hospitalité et inhospitalité offre un point d’entrée pour étudier ce que l’auteur nomme « the lore of the place ». S’appuyant sur la réévaluation contemporaine de la notion de lieu, la présente étude voit dans la représentation de l’(in)hospitalité une réflexion sur l’attachement à l’idée de continuité, la recherche des origines et le besoin d’emplacement, qui désengage le roman des discours sur l’autochtonie.

“The Break” is the name given to a strip of empty land in a poor neighbourhood on the outskirts of Winnipeg, the provincial capital of Manitoba and the setting of Katherena Vermette début novel. It is also the place where, on a winter’s night, a group of assailants caught up with a thirteen-year-old Indigenous girl and raped her within earshot of the neighbouring houses. The novel’s choral composition relies on alternating viewpoints to throw light on the assault’s circumstances, the factors that turned into a catalyst for the rape, and a combination of facts which, even as it is slowly revealed, blurs the line between victim and perpetrator. The crime and its antecedents are initially envisaged from within the Indigenous and Métis community, but the characters’ lives are also replaced in the wider context of the colonial history that has shaken the foundations of home and homeland for Canada’s First Nations. In The Break, storytelling and story listening both necessitate the taking into account of entropy, i.e. the parasitic interference or white noise caused by transmission, especially when vast distances separate the teller from the audience invited to listen in. To understand the various regimes and functions of hospitability in Vermette’s novel, the essay will be relying on the theory of communication Michel Serres develops while relying on the paradigm of the parasite, an organism that feeds on another without giving anything in return, so as to modelize relations between strangers who occupy the same space without sharing it. Cet article interroge la tension entre hospitalité et hostilité qui parcourt The Break, premier roman de Katherena Vermette paru en français sous le titre de Ligne brisée dans la traduction de Mélissa Verreault (Québec Amérique, 2017). Le titre fait référence à une ligne à haute tension qui traverse les quartiers nord de Winnipeg, là où se sont vues reléguées des populations d’autochtones et de Métis au cours de l’histoire coloniale qui donna naissance à la province. Cette même ligne à haute tension sert à la fois de décor à l’intrigue et de métaphore centrale condensant tout un réseau de transmissions symboliques : transmission intergénérationnelle du territoire mais aussi transmission de l’histoire conflictuelle de populations successives, chaque vague migratoire chassant l’autre. Pour mieux comprendre comment fonctionnent le récit et sa réception dans ce roman, on s’intéressera aux effets de l’entropie, c’est-à-dire le parasitage qui accompagne la diffusion d’une information et en perturbe la réception, particulièrement quand existe une distance importante entre la source du message et son destinataire. L’analyse s’appuiera ici sur la théorie de la communication que Michel Serres élabore à partir du paradigme du parasite, un organisme qui se nourrit de son hôte sans rien lui offrir en contrepartie. C’est à partir de cette asymétrie que l’on cherchera à mettre en lumière la façon dont s’articulent hospitalité et hostilité dans le roman de Vermette.

Hospitality as a value originates from religious traditions, be they Greek and Roman, embodied by the New Testament or the Hebrew Bible. Their prescriptive force remains as the foundation of the view of hospitality still ongoing today in the Jewish tradition, thus constituting the other pole of the tension between hospitality as a value, and hospitality as modern practice. This pole of values will be addressed through the ethical and practical lived experiences and approaches of the Hebrew Bible. It is difficult to be hospitable. Punishments for breaches of the laws of hospitality amount to acknowledging this obligation as a trial for both hosted and welcoming host. I have developed the concept of hospitality as the great trial of and, indeed, the great adventure of dwelling (Serfaty, 2016). Why is hospitality the great trial of dwelling? What is at stake in the risk of hospitality drifting into hostility? I will address that question by defining and further exploring the experience of dwelling and the issues of the inhabitants’ interiority and secrecy. The conclusion of this chapter will take us back to the Jewish tradition regarding the intimate links between home, hospitality and journeying, through the exploration of the multiple emblematic meanings of one of the letters of its alphabet, the letter B (bet) and of the mezuzah, the piece of parchment enclosed in a case that is placed on the doorposts of Jewish homes. L’hospitalité en tant que valeur est issue des traditions religieuses, qu’elles soient grecques et romaines, incarnées par le Nouveau Testament ou la Bible hébraïque. Leur force prescriptive reste le fondement de la vision de l’hospitalité toujours actuelle, constituant ainsi l’autre pôle d’une tension entre l’hospitalité comme valeur, et l’hospitalité comme pratique moderne. Cette tension entre valeur et pratique moderne sera abordée dans ce chapitre à travers les expériences vécues et les approches éthiques et pratiques de la Bible hébraïque. Il est difficile d’être hospitalier. Les punitions pour les infractions aux lois de l’hospitalité sont la preuve que cette obligation est une épreuve pour l’hôte comme pour la personne accueillie. J’ai développé le concept d’hospitalité comme la grande épreuve de notre façon d’habiter et en fait, la grande aventure dans le processus de se sentir chez-soi (Serfaty, 2016). Pourquoi l’hospitalité est-elle la grande épreuve de notre façon d’habiter ? Quel est l’enjeu du risque de dérive de l’hospitalité vers l’hostilité ? Je répondrai à cette question en définissant et en approfondissant l’expérience du fait d’habiter et les enjeux de l’intériorité et du secret chez les habitants. La conclusion de ce chapitre nous ramènera à la tradition juive concernant les liens intimes entre la maison, l’hospitalité et le voyage, à travers l’exploration des multiples significations emblématiques d’une des lettres de son alphabet, la lettre B (bet) et de la mezouzah, le morceau de parchemin enfermé dans un étui qui est placé sur les montants des portes des maisons juives.

This article is a proposal to cross theoretical debates and empirical analyses to question the conceptual problematisation of migration as a matter of hospitality, based on the case of France. Following the 2015 “Long summer of migration” in Western Europe, a metaphoric use of the concept of hospitality to denounce restrictive migration policies has been revived. However, some researchers–such as Bessone and Boudou–question the political relevance of the metaphor of hospitality that tends to moralise migration issues and naturalise inequalities. In parallel, as a reaction to the increasing number of refugees ending up homeless or unable to leave segregated housing facilities, hosting practices have dramatically developed. With this chapter I aim to fuel the theoretical debate with an empirical analysis of the French “Citizen hosting” program. Mobilising Young’s work on justice I point out that an on-going institutionalisation of private hospitality is embedded in inequalities and produces domination. This kind of practical development could be an additional argument for criticising and eventually abandoning the metaphor of hospitality. Nevertheless, I argue that, as hospitality acts as a powerful catalyst of contestation in times of border and reception crisis, a solution would be to imagine ways to radicalise it by combining it with justice. Cet article propose de croiser débats théoriques et analyses de terrain pour remettre en question la façon commune de considérer les migrations comme une affaire d’hospitalité. Suite au « long été de migrations » de 2015 dans l’ouest de l’Europe, le concept d’hospitalité a été utilisé de manière métaphorique pour dénoncer les politiques restrictives en matière de migrations. Cependant, des chercheurs comme Bessone ou Boudou ont remis en question la pertinence politique de cette métaphore qui tend selon eux à moraliser les débats autour des questions de migrations et ainsi à naturaliser les inégalités. Dans le même temps, en réaction au nombre croissant de personnes exilées sans-abri ou dans l’incapacité de quitter des dispositifs contraignants d’hébergement collectif, des initiatives d’hébergement solidaire ont vu le jour. Dans cet article je souhaite contribuer au débat théorique à partir d’une étude du programme « hébergement citoyen » mis en œuvre par l’État français. À partir du travail effectué par Young sur la justice, je montrerai comment l’institutionnalisation actuelle de l’hospitalité privée est imbriquée dans des rapports d’inégalité et engendre des relations de domination. Ce type de mise en pratique de l’hospitalité pourrait nourrir les arguments de ceux qui critiquent et souhaitent abandonner la métaphore de l’hospitalité. Cependant, précisément parce que l’hospitalité fonctionne comme un puissant catalyseur des multiples forces contestataires qui s’exercent en cas de crise aux frontières et dans l’accueil, il semble plus judicieux d’imaginer des manières de radicaliser l’hospitalité en l’articulant à des principes de justice.

This chapter describes the presence of young children at the heart of photographic accounts of migration as a strategy to denounce the contemporary disappearance of the traditional social organisation that sees hospitality as a fundamental and sacred duty. And to do so it will first, question the photographic figure of the child as an emblem of distraught migrants. It will then analyse the role of the photographic process that has been used by the professional photographers to fabricate and present their migration and hospitality stories. The aim is to show that by mediating such an act, the photographer contributes to the contemporary deterioration of ancestral and theoretically unconditional hospitality, from individual to individual, to shielded, conditional and collective practice, delegated to institutions, local authorities and humanitarian organisations.The idea is to highlight the adequacy of the photographic medium to represent hospitality in its ambivalence while questioning its contemporary shift or qualitative transformation. Ce chapitre questionne la présence de jeunes enfants au cœur des récits photographiques de la migration comme stratégie pour dénoncer la disparition contemporaine de l’organisation sociale traditionnelle qui considère l’hospitalité comme un devoir fondamental et sacré. Pour ce faire, il s’agira d’abord de questionner la figure de l’enfant en photographie comme emblème du désarroi des migrants. Nous analyserons ensuite le rôle du processus photographique utilisé par les photographes pour fabriquer et présenter leurs récits de migration et d’hospitalité.L’objectif est de montrer qu’en médiatisant un tel acte, le photographe contribue à la détérioration de l’hospitalité ancestrale et théoriquement inconditionnelle, passant d’une pratique entre individus à une pratique institutionalisée déléguée aux autorités locales et aux organisations humanitaires.L’idée est de mettre en question l’adéquation du médium photographique pour représenter l’hospitalité dans son ambivalence tout en mettant en évidence son glissement contemporain.

Ricœur (1992, 172) defined ethics as “aiming at a good life lived with and for others in just institutions.” Donal Ryan’s novel From a Low and Quiet Sea (2018) examines what this “good life” means while exploring human relationships in the contemporary Irish context, as it portrays characters who are in turn hospitable, hosted, hostile and victims of hostility. The novel focuses on human ambivalence and invites its readers to confront it along with the ethical questions thereby raised. It also points to the changing narratives of migration in Ireland in recent years, highlighting how matters of inclusiveness and exclusion are interlaced with stories and storytelling. This article thus examines the narratives of hostility and hospitality at work in From a Low and Quiet Sea and their correlation with both ethical and aesthetic preoccupations. It briefly reviews the character relationships on display, before focusing on Irish national identity and its narrative. Since, in the novel narrative choices shape the ambivalence of the dialectics of hospitality and hostility, it finally asks whether the text is a hostile or a hospitable one, examining how storytelling modes and intentions—which turn out to be at the core of the novel—are fundamentally linked to inclusiveness. Le roman se penche sur l’ambivalence des êtres humains ; il invite ses lecteurs à s’y confronter, ainsi qu’aux questions éthiques qu’elle soulève. Il met également en évidence la manière dont les récits de la migration ont évolué en Irlande au cours de ces dernières décennies, montrant ainsi que les thématiques d’inclusion et d’exclusion sont liées aux histoires et aux récits. Cet article étudie donc les récits d’hostilité et d’hospitalité à l’œuvre dans From a Low and Quiet Sea, leurs modes de narration et leur corrélation avec des préoccupations à la fois éthiques et esthétiques. Il passe brièvement en revue les relations entre les personnages, avant d’examiner l’identité nationale irlandaise telle qu’elle est ici racontée. Enfin, et puisque ce sont les choix narratifs qui modèlent l’ambivalence de la dialectique hospitalité/hostilité dans le roman, la dernière partie de l’article se demande si, pour son lectorat, le texte est caractérisé par l’hostilité ou l’hospitalité, en examinant le lien intrinsèque entre d’une part les intentions et modes narratifs, qui s’avèrent être au cœur du roman, et de l’autre la question de l’inclusion.

In international law, the concept of the “host” state is ubiquitous. Host states are where International Organizations are headquartered; they are the recipients of aid and peacekeeping forces. Host states are also the beneficiaries of foreign investment. As opposed to the home state, where the business, entity, or troops are permanently located, the host state typically has a temporary relationship with the entity in question. Treaties, contracts and other legal instruments with host states regulate the rights, duties, status, privileges and sometimes even immunities of the entities within its territory. My project investigates the duality and power imbalances surrounding the concept of host states, and connects it to the broader conversation about hospitality, which is particularly pertinent in light of recent border closures due to Covid-19. In particular, I trace the long history of the concept of hospitality and hosts, from the ancient Greeks to Kant and more recently, Derrida and Arendt. I discuss the perceived rights and duties of host states, and investigate how the fragmentation of the nation state, has complicated the public work of the United Nations with regards to non-state actors like terrorists, and the private work of Investors. Dans le droit international, le concept d’« État hôte » est polysémique. Les États hôtes sont des États où les institutions internationales ont leur siège ; ils reçoivent les aides humanitaires et les forces de maintien de la paix. Les États hôtes sont aussi bénéficiaires des investissements étrangers. Par opposition à l’État d’origine, où les entreprises, l’institution concernée ou les troupes sont situées de manière permanente, l’État hôte a une relation temporaire avec l’institution concernée. Les traités, contrats et autres éléments légaux en lien avec les états hôtes régulent les droits, devoirs, statuts, privilèges et parfois même l’immunité des institutions à l’intérieur de leurs territoires. Ce chapitre propose de montrer la dualité du terme et le déséquilibre autour du concept d’État hôte en le reliant plus largement au débat autour de la notion d’hospitalité, débat particulièrement pertinent suite aux diverses fermetures de frontières dues à la pandémie CoVid19. En particulier, je fais remonter la longue histoire de ce concept d’hospitalité et d’hôte, des anciens Grecs à Kant et plus récemment Derrida et Arendt. J’aborde les droits et devoirs tels que les comprennent les États hôtes et démontre comment la fragmentation de l’État nation a compliqué le travail des Nations Unies lorsqu’il s’agit de traiter avec des acteurs non-étatiques tels que les agents terroristes, mais aussi le travail privé d’investisseurs.
