1. Nanoring Tamm Cavity in the Telecommunications O band

Abstract

Quantum and classical telecommunications require efficient sources of light. Semiconductorsources, owing to the high refractive index of the medium, often exploit photonic cavities to enhance the external emission of photons into a well-defined optical mode. Optical Tamm States (OTS), in which light is confined between a distributed Bragg reflector and a thin metal layer have attracted interest as confined Tamm structures are readily manufactureable broadband cavities. Their effficiency is limited however by the absorption inherent in the metal layer. We propose a nanoring Tamm structure in which a nanoscale patterned annular metasurface is exploited to reduce this absorption and thereby enhance emission efficiency. To this end, we present designs for a nanoring Tamm structure optimised for the telecommunications O band, and demonstrate a near doubling of output efficiency (35%) over an analogous solid disc confined Tamm structure (18%). Simulations of designs optimised for different wavelengths are suggestive of annular coupling between the Tamm state and surface plasmons. These designs are applicable to the design of single photon sources, nanoLEDs, and nanolasers for communications.

3. Highly manufacturable structures for efficient extraction of single photon emission from telecom O-band quantum dots

Abstract

A high-efficiency single photon source (SPS) emitting photons at the telecom O-band or C-band has minimum transmission loss in the silica-based optical fibres, thus is essential in applications such as quantum communication and quantum teleportation. This thesis explores the possibilities of developing such a SPS based on quantum dots (QDs). First, Tamm-based photonic cavities are designed and optimised for extracting the telecom-wavelength photons emitted by the QDs from the high-refractive-index matrix materials using electromagnetic modelling techniques. The optimal confined Tamm structure has been found to have an extraction efficiency of 18\%, and is potentially robust against fabrication errors and suitable for scalable production. In addition, a novel confined Tamm structure with an aperture has been proposed, which is predicted to further improve the extraction efficiency by a factor of 2. Second, a potential QD-SPS, InGaAs-capped InAs QD, which can emit photons at the telecom O-band are investigated experimentally by optical measurements. The wavelength and linewidth distribution of the QD emission lines are characterised, and the exciton and biexciton lines are successfully isolated. In addition, the effects of photonic cavities, such as microcavities and confined Tamm structures, on these QD emissions are studied. The measured mode wavelength, photoluminescence intensity, and quality factor are in broad agreement with the simulation results. Remarkably, we observed single emission lines from the QDs emitting at telecom O-band coupled to confined Tamm mode. Finally, a new promising QD platform, the bismuth-incorporated InAs QD, which can potentially further extend the emission wavelength to the telecom C-band, is also investigated. The emission lines from these QDs are observed and characterised for the first time. We find that with 1% Bi incorporated, the emission wavelength is close to the telecom window, and the linewidth is comparable with the regular InAs QDs.

5. Identification of Floral Volatile Components and Expression Analysis of Controlling Gene in Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ under Different Cultivation Conditions

Abstract

In order to explore the release rule of floral volatile substances and the diurnal variation of different flower development stages of Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ in potted and ground-planted conditions, dynamic headspace adsorption combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) was used to analyze the dynamic changes in floral volatile components and contents. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to analyze changes in flower fragrance-regulating genes PsPAL, PsTPSs, and PsbHLH at different flower development stages and a daily change process at the full-blooming stage. The results show that there were differences in aroma components and contents of Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ at different flower development stages and different time quantum of every day. There were 25 and 28 aroma components identified in 7 flower development stages of tree peonies planted in pots and in the field, respectively, and 23 and 22 aroma components identified at different time quantum of the day, of which the largest and highest content was alkanes. The main characteristic aroma substances were (E)-β-ocimene, 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, methyl jasmonate, nerol, and cinnamyl alcohol; released amounts of the abovementioned substances varied depending on the development stage and the time of the day. The expression of flower fragrance-controlling genes (PsPAL, PsTPSs, and PsbHLH) in tree peonies varied greatly in different conditions. The results of this study provide a valuable resource to investigate floral fragrance formation in tree peonies.

Abstract

In the early 1990s, the objectives for reform of the socialist market economy were established, within which building contractual labor relations and cultivating the labor market were two key elements. The Rural-Urban Divide system consists of several related institutions, in which the hukou system and urban labor system are basic arrangements. During the period of rural reform, peasants received economic rights in job searching and doing independent business, hence it became possible for them to leave agriculture and go into cities. New policies for rural migrants clearly state rural migrants' status as the subject of a contractual labor relationship, and require all enterprises to sign and implement a labor contract when recruiting rural migrants and to establish labor relationships with defined rights and obligations. In cities, the general trend has been for the segmentation and inequality effects of hukou status to diminish over time. 11. [Value of pre-gestational deafness-related mutation screening for the prevention and intervention of congenital deafness].

Abstract

Objective: To assess the value of pre-gestational deafness-related mutation screening for the prevention and intervention of congenital deafness., Methods: In this study, 2168 couples with normal hearing were screened for common mutations associated with congenital deafness using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. The mutations have included GJB2 c.235delC and c.299_300delAT, SLC26A4 c.2168A>G and c.IVS7-2A>G, and mtDNA 12SrRNA c.1494C>T and c.1555A>G. For couples who have both carried heterozygous mutations of the same gene, genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis were provided., Results: Among of the 4 336 individuals, 178 (4.06%) were found to carry a mutation. Mutation rate for c.235delC and c.299_300delAT of GJB2 gene, c.IVS7-2 A>G and c.2168 A>G of SLC26A4 gene, c.1555 A>G and c.1494 C>T of DNA 12S rRNA gene were 0.91%, 0.20%, 0.68%, 0.11%, 0.1% and 0.01%, respectively. For six couples who have both carried mutations of the same gene, all fetuses showed a normal karyotype, while DNA sequencing indicated that two fetuses have carried homozygous c.235delC mutation of the GJB2 gene, one carried a heterozygous c.235delC mutation of the GJB2 gene, one carried heterozygous mutation of GJB2 gene (c.299_300delAT), and two have carried a heterozygous mutation of c.IVS7-2A>G of the SLC26A4 gene., Conclusion: Pre-gestational screening for deafness gene mutation can facilitate avoidance the birth of affected children and has a great clinical value for the prevention and intervention of birth defect.

Abstract

Objective: The gene of ice nucleation protein (INP), an outer membrane of Pseudomonas syringae was tested to display foreign proteins on the surface of Lactococcus lactis., Methods: Plasmids pHZ101 and pHZ102 were constructed using gfp (Green Fluorescence Protein) as the reporter gene and N-terminal and NC-terminal of inp as the anchoring units. Plasmids pHZ101 and pHZ102 were subsequently transformed into Escherichia coli JM109 and Lactococcus lactis MG1363., Results: Fluorescence microscope shows that green fluorescence was observed in both recombinant E. coli and L. lactis strains. Western blot indicated that GFP was expressed in both recombinant E. coli and L. lactis strains. INPN-GFP was mostly trapped in cytoplastic fraction while INPNC-GFP was mainly targeted on the cell membrane of L. lactis., Conclusion: The results suggest a new way to construct cell surface display system of lactic acid bacteria by using ice nucleation protein.
