We investigated the stellar mass function and the binary fraction of 114 nearby open clusters (OCs) using the high-precision photometric data from Gaia Data Release 3 (Gaia DR3). We estimated the mass of member stars by using a ridge line (RL) that is better in line with the observed color-magnitude diagram (CMD), thus obtaining more accurate stellar mass and binary mass ratio ($q$) at the low-mass region. By analyzing the present-day mass function (PDMF) of star clusters, we found that 108 OCs follow a two-stage power-law distribution, whereas 6 OCs present a single power-law PDMF. Subsequently, we fitted the high(low)-mass index of PDMF ($dN/dm \propto m^{-\alpha}$), denoted as $\alpha_{\rm h}$($\alpha_{\rm l}$), and segmentation point $m_{\rm c}$. For our cluster sample, the median values of $\alpha_{\rm h}$ and $\alpha_{\rm l}$ are 2.65 and 0.95, respectively, which are approximately consistent with the initial mass function (IMF) results provided by Kroupa (2001). We utilized the cumulative radial number distribution of stars with different masses to quantify the degree of mass segregation. We found a significant positive correlation between the state of dynamical evolution and mass segregation in OCs. We also estimated the fraction of binary stars with $q \geq 0.5$, ranging from 6% to 34% with a median of 17%. In this work, we update the catalog of M-giant stars from the low-resolution spectra of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 9. There are 58,076 M giants identified from the classification pipeline with seven temperature subtypes from M0 to M6. The 2471 misclassified non-M-giant stars are white dwarf binaries, early types, and M dwarfs. And the contamination rate is 4.2$\%$ in the M-giants sample. A total of 372 carbon stars were identified by CaH spectral indices, and were further confirmed by the LAMOST spectra. We update the correlation between the $(W1-W2)_0$ color and [M/H] from APOGEE DR17. We calculate the radial velocities of all M giants by applying cross-correlation to the spectra between 8000 and 8950 \AA with synthetic spectra from ATLAS9. Taking star distances less than 4 kpc from Gaia EDR3 as the standard, we refitted the photometric distance relation of M giants. And based on our M-giant stars, we select a group of Sagittarius stream members, whose sky and 3D velocity distributions are well consistent with K-giant Saggitarius stream members found in Yang et al. We present a new two-component dust geometry model, the \textit{Chocolate Chip Cookie} model, where the clumpy nebular regions are embedded in a diffuse stellar/ISM disk, like chocolate chips in a cookie. By approximating the binomial distribution of the clumpy nebular regions with a continuous Gaussian distribution and omitting the dust scattering effect, our model solves the dust attenuation process for both the emission lines and stellar continua via analytical approaches. Our Chocolate Chip Cookie model successfully fits the inclination dependence of both the effective dust reddening of the stellar components derived from stellar population synthesis and that of the emission lines characterized by the Balmer decrement for a large sample of Milky-Way like disk galaxies selected from the main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our model shows that the clumpy nebular disk is about 0.55 times thinner and 1.6 times larger than the stellar disk for MW-like galaxies, whereas each clumpy region has a typical optical depth $\tau_{\rm{cl,V}} \sim 0.5$ in $V$ band. After considering the aperture effect, our model prediction on the inclination dependence of dust attenuation is also consistent with observations. Not only that, in our model, the dust attenuation curve of the stellar population naturally depends on inclination and its median case is consistent with the classical Calzetti law. Since the modelling constraints are from the optical wavelengths, our model is unaffected by the optically thick dust component, which however could bias the model's prediction of the infrared emissions., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

With the help of Gaia data, it is noted that in addition to the core components, there are low-density outer halo components in the extended region of open clusters. To study the extended structure beyond the core radius of the cluster ($\sim$ 10 pc), based on Gaia EDR3 data, taking up to 50 pc as the searching radius, we use the pyUPMASK algorithm to re-determine the member stars of the open cluster within 1-2 kpc. We obtain the member stars of 256 open clusters, especially those located in the outer halo region of open clusters. Furthermore, we find that most open clusters' radial density profile in the outer region deviates from the King's profile. To better describe the internal and external structural characteristics of open clusters, we propose a double components model for description: core components with King model distribution and outer halo components with logarithmic Gaussian distribution, and then suggest using four radii ( $r_c$, $r_t$, $r_o$, $r_e$) for describing the structure and distribution profile of star clusters, where $r_t$ and $r_e$ represent the boundaries of core components and outer halo components respectively. Finally, we provide a catalog of 256 clusters with structural parameters. In addition, our study shows the sizes of these radii are statistically linear related, which indicates that the inner and outer regions of the cluster are interrelated and follow similar evolutionary processes. COIN-Gaia 13 is a newly discovered open cluster revealed by Gaia DR2 data. It is a nearby open cluster with a distance of about 513 pc. Combined with the five-dimensional astrometric data of Gaia EDR3 with higher accuracy, we use the membership assignment algorithm (pyUPMASK) to determine the membership of COIN-Gaia 13 in a large extended spatial region. The cluster has found 478 candidate members. After obtaining reliable cluster members, we further study its basic properties and spatial distribution. Our results show that there is an obvious extended structure of the cluster in the X-Y plane. This elongated structure is distributed along the spiral arm, and the whole length is about 270 pc. The cluster age is 250 Myr, the total mass is about 439 M$_\odot$, and the tidal radius of the cluster is about 11 pc. Since more than half of the member stars (352 stars) are located outside twice the tidal radius, it is suspected that this cluster is undergoing the dynamic dissolution process. Furthermore, the spatial distribution and kinematic analysis indicate that the extended structure in COIN-Gaia 13 is more likely to be caused by the differential rotation of the Galaxy., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), also known as the Guoshoujing Telescope, is a major national scientific facility for astronomical research located in Xinglong, China. Beginning with a pilot survey in 2011, LAMOST has been surveying the night sky for more than 10 years. The LAMOST survey covers various objects in the Universe, from normal stars to peculiar ones, from the Milky Way to other galaxies, and from stellar black holes and their companions to quasars that ignite ancient galaxies. Until the latest data release 8, the LAMOST survey has released spectra for more than 10 million stars, ~220,000 galaxies, and ~71,000 quasars. With this largest celestial spectra database ever constructed, LAMOST has helped astronomers to deepen their understanding of the Universe, especially for our Milky Way galaxy and the millions of stars within it. In this article, we briefly review the characteristics, observations, and scientific achievements of LAMOST. In Gaia DR2, the unprecedented high-precision level reached in sub-mas for astrometry and mmag for photometry. Using cluster members identified with these astrometry and photometry in Gaia DR2, we can obtain a reliable determination of cluster properties. However, because of the shortcoming of Gaia spectroscopic observation in dealing with densely crowded cluster region, the number of radial velocity and metallicity for cluster member stars from Gaia DR2 is still lacking. In this study, we aim to improve the cluster properties by combining the LAMOST spectra. In particular, we provide the list of cluster members with spectroscopic parameters as an add-value catalog in LAMOST DR5, which can be used to perform detailed study for a better understanding on the stellar properties, by using their spectra and fundamental properties from the host cluster. We cross-matched the spectroscopic catalog in LAMOST DR5 with the identified cluster members in Cantat-Gaudin et al.2018 and then used members with spectroscopic parameters to derive statistical properties of open clusters. We obtained a list of 8811 members with spectroscopic parameters and a catalog of 295 cluster properties. In addition, we study the radial and vertical metallicity gradient and age-metallicity relation with the compiled open clusters as tracers, finding slopes of -0.053$\pm$0.004 dex kpc$^{-1}$, -0.252$\pm$0.039 dex kpc$^{-1}$ and 0.022$\pm$0.008 dex Gyr$^{-1}$, respectively. Both slopes of metallicity distribution relation for young clusters (0.1 Gyr < Age < 2 Gyr) and the age-metallicity relation for clusters within 6 Gyr are consistent with literature results. Since September 2018, LAMOST starts a new 5-year medium-resolution spectroscopic survey (MRS) using bright/gray nights. We present the scientific goals of LAMOST-MRS and propose a near optimistic strategy of the survey. A complete footprint is also provided. Not only the regular medium-resolution survey, but also a time-domain spectroscopic survey is being conducted since 2018 and will be end in 2023. According to the detailed survey plan, we expect that LAMOST-MRS can observe about 2 million stellar spectra with ~7500 and limiting magnitude of around G=15 mag. Moreover, it will also provide about 200 thousand stars with averagely 60-epoch observations and limiting magnitude of G~14 mag. These high quality spectra will give around 20 elemental abundances, rotational velocities, emission line profiles as well as precise radial velocity with uncertainty less than 1 km/s. With these data, we expect that LAMOST can effectively leverage sciences on stellar physics, e.g. exotic binary stars, detailed observation of many types of variable stars etc., planet host stars, emission nebulae, open clusters, young pre-main-sequence stars etc., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figues. In this work, we present new catalogs of M giant and M dwarf stars from the LAMOST DR5. In total, 39,796 M giants and 501,152 M dwarfs are identified from the classification pipeline. The template-fitting results contain M giants with 7 temperature subtypes from M0 to M6, M dwarfs with 18 temperature subtypes from K7.0 to M8.5 and 12 metallicity subclasses from dMr to usdMp. We cross-matched our M-type catalog with the 2MASS and WISE catalog to obtain infrared magnitude and colors. Adopting the distances derived from the parallaxes in \gaia{} DR2, the M_G vs. (G_bp-G_rp)_0 diagram shows that there are also early-type stars and white dwarf-M dwarf binaries included in our M type stars sample, with a contamination rate of about 4.6% for M giants and 0.48% for M dwarfs. We found that CaH spectral indices are an efficient selection criteria for carbon stars. In order to study the stellar population and possible substructures in the outskirts of Double Cluster $h$ and $\chi$ Persei, we investigate using the GAIA DR2 data a sky area of about 7.5 degrees in radius around the Double Cluster cores. We identify member stars using various criteria, including their kinematics (viz, proper motion), individual parallaxes, as well as photometric properties. A total of 2186 member stars in the parameter space were identified as members. Based on the spatial distribution of the member stars, we find an extended halo structure of $h$ and $\chi$ Persei, about 6 - 8 times larger than their core radii. We report the discovery of filamentary substructures extending to about 200 pc away from the Double Cluster. The tangential velocities of these distant substructures suggest that they are more likely to be the remnants of primordial structures, instead of a tidally disrupted stream from the cluster cores. Moreover, the internal kinematic analysis indicates that halo stars seems to be experiencing a dynamic stretching in the RA direction, while the impact of the core components is relatively negligible. We present a three-dimensional modeling of the Milky Way dust distribution by fitting the value-added star catalog of LAMOST spectral survey. The global dust distribution can be described by an exponential disk with scale-length of 3,192 pc and scale height of 103 pc. In this modeling, the Sun is located above the dust disk with a vertical distance of 23 pc. Besides the global smooth structure, two substructures around the solar position are also identified. The one located at $150^{\circ}

We study the integral Galactic extinction and reddening based on the galaxy catalog of the South Galactic Cap U-band Sky Survey (SCUSS), where $u$ band galaxy number counts and $u-r$ color distribution are used to derive the Galactic extinction and reddening respectively. We compare these independent statistical measurements with the reddening map of \citet{Schlegel1998}(SFD) and find that both the extinction and reddening from the number counts and color distribution are in good agreement with the SFD results at low extinction regions ($E(B-V)^{SFD}<0.12$ mag). However, for high extinction regions ($E(B-V)^{SFD}>0.12$ mag), the SFD map overestimates the Galactic reddening systematically, which can be approximated by a linear relation $\Delta E(B-V)= 0.43[E(B-V)^{SFD}-0.12$]. By combing the results of galaxy number counts and color distribution together, we find that the shape of the Galactic extinction curve is in good agreement with the standard $R_V=3.1$ extinction law of \cite{ODonnell1994}.

We report two new tidal debris nearby the Sagittarius (Sgr) tidal stream in the north Galactic cap identified from the M giant stars in LAMOST DR2 data. The M giant stars with sky area of $210^\circ<$\Lambda$<290^\circ$, distance of 10--20kpc, and [Fe/H]$<-0.75$ show clear bimodality in velocity distribution. We denote the two peaks as Vel-3+83 for the one within mean velocity of -3kms$^{-1}$ with respect to that of the well observed Sgr leading tail at the same $\Lambda$ and Vel+162+26 for the other one with mean velocity of 162kms$^{-1}$ with respect to the Sgr leading tail. Although the projected $\Lambda$--$V_{gar}$ relation of Vel-3+83 is very similar to the Sgr leading tail, the opposite trend in $\Lambda$--distance relation against the Sgr leading tail suggests Vel-3+83 has a different 3D direction of motion with any branch of the simulated Sgr tidal stream from Law & Majewski. Therefore, we propose it to be a new tidal debris not related to the Sgr stream. Similarly, the another substructure Vel+162+26, which is the same one as the NGC group discovered by Chou et al., also moves toward a different direction with the Sgr stream, implying that it may have different origin with the Sgr tidal stream., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics accepted

Using a spectroscopically confirmed sample of M-giants, M-dwarfs and quasars from the LAMOST survey, we assess how well WISE $\&$ 2MASS color-cuts can be used to select M-giant stars. The WISE bands are very efficient at separating M-giants from M-dwarfs and we present a simple classification that can produce a clean and relatively complete sample of M-giants. We derive a new photometric relation to estimate the metallicity for M-giants, calibrated using data from the APOGEE survey. We find a strong correlation between the $(W1-W2)$ color and $\rm [M/H]$, where almost all of the scatter is due to photometric uncertainties. We show that previous photometric distance relations, which are mostly based on stellar models, may be biased and devise a new empirical distance relation, investigating trends with metallicity and star formation history. Given these relations, we investigate the properties of M-giants in the Sagittarius stream. The offset in the orbital plane between the leading and trailing tails is reproduced and, by identifying distant M-giants in the direction of the Galactic anti-center, we confirm that the previously detected debris in the outer halo is the apocenter of the trailing tail. We also find tentative evidence supporting an existing overdensity near the leading tail in the Northern Galactic hemisphere, possibly an extension to the trailing tail (so-called Branch C). We have measured the metallicity distribution along the stream, finding a clear metallicity offset between the leading and trailing tails, in agreement with models for the stream formation. A small fraction($<10\%$) of SDSS main sample galaxies(MGs) have not been targeted with spectroscopy due to the the fiber collision effect. These galaxies have been compiled into the input catalog of the LAMOST extra-galactic survey and named as the complementary galaxy sample. In this paper, we introduce the project and the status of the spectroscopies of the complementary galaxies in the first two years of the LAMOST spectral survey(till Sep. of 2014). Moreover, we present a sample of 1,102 galaxy pairs identified from the LAMOST complementary galaxies and SDSS MGs, which are defined as that the two members have a projected distance smaller than 100 kpc and the recessional velocity difference smaller than 500 $\rm kms^{-1}$. Compared with the SDSS only selected galaxy pairs, the LAMOST-SDSS pairs take the advantages of not being biased toward large separations and therefor play as a useful supplement to the statistical studies of galaxy interaction and galaxy merging., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, RAA accepted. We perform a discrimination procedure with the spectral index diagram of TiO5 and CaH2+CaH3 to separate M giants from M dwarfs. Using the M giant spectra identified from the LAMOST DR1 with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we have successfully assembled a set of M giant templates, which show more reliable spectral features. Combining with the M dwarf/subdwarf templates in Zhong et al. (2015), we present an extended M-type templates library which includes not only M dwarfs with well-defined temperature and metallicity grid but also M giants with subtype from M0 to M6. Then, the template-fit algorithm were used to automatically identify and classify M giant stars from the LAMOST DR1. The result of M giant stars catalog is cross-matched with 2MASS JHKs and WISE W1/W2 infrared photometry. In addition, we calculated the heliocentric radial velocity of all M giant stars by using the cross-correlation method with the template spectrum in a zero-velocity restframe. Using the relationship between the absolute infrared magnitude MJ and our classified spectroscopic subtype, we derived the spectroscopic distance of M giants with uncertainties of about 40%. A catalog of 8639 M giants is provided. We present a method to estimate distances to stars with spectroscopically derived stellar parameters. The technique is a Bayesian approach with likelihood estimated via comparison of measured parameters to a grid of stellar isochrones, and returns a posterior probability density function for each star's absolute magnitude. This technique is tailored specifically to data from the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. Because LAMOST obtains roughly 3000 stellar spectra simultaneously within each ~5-degree diameter "plate" that is observed, we can use the stellar parameters of the observed stars to account for the stellar luminosity function and target selection effects. This removes biasing assumptions about the underlying populations, both due to predictions of the luminosity function from stellar evolution modeling, and from Galactic models of stellar populations along each line of sight. Using calibration data of stars with known distances and stellar parameters, we show that our method recovers distances for most stars within ~20%, but with some systematic overestimation of distances to halo giants. We apply our code to the LAMOST database, and show that the current precision of LAMOST stellar parameters permits measurements of distances with ~40% error bars. We develop a template-fit method to automatically identify and classify late-type K and M dwarfs in spectra from the LAMOST. A search of the commissioning data, acquired in 2009-2010, yields the identification of 2612 late-K and M dwarfs. The template fit method also provides spectral classification to half a subtype, classifies the stars along the dwarf-subdwarf metallicity sequence, and provides improved metallicity/gravity information on a finer scale. The automated search and classification is performed using a set of cool star templates assembled from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic database. We show that the stars can be efficiently classified despite shortcomings in the LAMOST commissioning data which include bright sky lines in the red. In particular we find that the absolute and relative strengths of the critical TiO and CaH molecular bands around 7000A are cleanly measured, which provides accurate spectral typing from late-K to mid-M, and makes it possible to estimate metallicities in a way that is more efficient and reliable than with the use of spectral indices or spectral-index based parameters such as zeta. Most of the cool dwarfs observed by LAMOST are found to be metal-rich dwarfs. We use a calibration of spectral type to absolute magnitude and estimate spectroscopic distances for all the stars; we also recover proper motions from the SUPERBLINK and PPMXL catalogs. Our analysis of the estimated transverse motions suggests a mean velocity and standard deviation for the UVW components of velocity to be: U=-9.8 km/s; V=-22.8 km/s; W=-7.9 km/s. The resulting values are general agreement with previous reported results, which yields confidence in our spectral classification and spectroscopic distance estimates, and illustrates the potential for using LAMOST spectra of K and M dwarfs for investigating the chemo-kinematics of the local Galactic disk and halo., Comment: 18 pages,16 figures,accepted for publication AJ

We quantify and correct systematic errors in PPMXL proper motions using extragalactic sources from the first two LAMOST data releases and the Veron-Cetty & Veron Catalog of Quasars. Although the majority of the sources are from the Veron catalog, LAMOST makes important contributions in regions that are not well-sampled by previous catalogs, particularly at low Galactic latitudes and in the south Galactic cap. We show that quasars in PPMXL have measureable and significant proper motions, which reflect the systematic zero-point offsets present in the catalog. We confirm the global proper motion shifts seen by Wu, Ma, & Zhou (2011), and additionally find smaller-scale fluctuations of the QSO-derived corrections to an absolute frame. We report the discovery of 28 candidate high-velocity stars (HVSs) at heliocentric distances of less than 3 kpc, based on the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 1. Our sample of HVS candidates covers a much broader color range than the equivalent ranges discussed in previous studies and comprises the first and largest sample of HVSs in the solar neighborhood. The sufficiently accurate observed and derived parameters for all candidates allow us to ascertain their nature as genuine HVSs, while a subset of 12 objects represents the most promising candidates. Our results also highlight the great potential of discovering statistically large numbers of HVSs of different spectral types in LAMOST survey data. We construct a parameterized model to explore the main properties of the star formation history of M33. We assume that the disk originates and grows by the primordial gas infall and adopt the simple form of gas accretion rate with one free parameter, the infall time-scale. We also include the contribution of gas outflow process. A major update of the model is that we adopt a molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law and calculate the evolution of the atomic and molecular gas separately. Comparisons between the model predictions and the observational data show that the model predictions are very sensitive to the adopted infall time-scale, while the gas outflow process mainly influences the metallicity profile. The model adopting a moderate outflow rate and an inside-out formation scenario can be in good agreement with most of observed constraints of M33 disk. We also compare the model predictions based on the molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law and that based on the Kennicutt star formation law. We outline the design of the dark nights portion of the LAMOST Pilot Survey, which began observations in October 2011. In particular, we focus on Milky Way stellar candidates that are targeted for the LEGUE (LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration) survey. We discuss the regions of sky in which spectroscopic candidates were selected, and the motivations for selecting each of these sky areas. Some limitations due to the unique design of the telescope are discussed, including the requirement that a bright (V < 8) star be placed at the center of each plate for wavefront sensing and active optics corrections. The target selection categories and scientific goals motivating them are briefly discussed, followed by a detailed overview of how these selection functions were realized. We describe a general target selection algorithm that is applicable to any survey in which the number of available candidates is much larger than the number of objects to be observed. This routine aims to achieve a balance between a smoothly-varying, well-understood selection function and the desire to preferentially select certain types of targets. Some target-selection examples are shown that illustrate different possibilities of emphasis functions. Although it is generally applicable, the algorithm was developed specifically for the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (LEGUE) survey that will be carried out using the Chinese Guo Shou Jing Telescope. In particular, this algorithm was designed for the portion of LEGUE targeting the Galactic halo, in which we attempt to balance a variety of science goals that require stars at fainter magnitudes than can be completely sampled by LAMOST. We describe the current plans for a spectroscopic survey of millions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy using the Guo Shou Jing Telescope (GSJT, formerly the Large Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope - LAMOST). The survey will obtain spectra for 2.5 million stars brighter than $r<19$ during dark/grey time, and 5 million stars brighter than $r<17$ or $J<16$ on nights that are moonlit or have low transparency. The survey will begin in fall of 2012, and will run for at least four years. The telescope design constrains the optimal declination range for observations to $10^\circ<\delta<50^\circ$, and site conditions lead to an emphasis on stars in the direction of the Galactic anticenter. The survey is divided into three parts with different target selection strategies: disk, anticenter, and spheroid. The resulting dataset will be used to study the merger history of the Milky Way, the substructure and evolution of the disks, the nature of the first generation of stars through identification of the lowest metallicity stars, and star formation through study of open clusters and the OB associations. We describe the footprint and input catalog for bright nights in the LAMOST Pilot Survey, which began in October 2011. Targets are selected from two stripes in the north and south Galactic Cap regions, centered at $\alpha$= 29$^\circ$, with 10$^\circ$ width in declination, covering right ascension of 135$^\circ-290^\circ$ and -30$^\circ$ to 30$^\circ$ respectively. We selected spectroscopic targets from a combination of the SDSS and 2MASS point source catalogs. The catalog of stars defining the field centers (as required by the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor at the center of the LAMOST field) consists of all V < 8m stars from the Hipparcos catalog. We employ a statistical selection algorithm that assigns priorities to targets based on their positions in multidimensional color/magnitude space. This scheme overemphasizes rare objects and de-emphasizes more populated regions of magnitude and color phase space, while ensuring a smooth, well-understood selection function. The weather at Xinglong Observing Station, where the Guo Shou Jing Telescope (GSJT) is located, is strongly affected by the monsoon climate in north-east China. The LAMOST survey strategy is constrained by these weather patterns. In this paper, we present a statistics on observing hours from 2004 to 2007, and the sky brightness, seeing, and sky transparency from 1995 to 2011 at the site. We investigate effects of the site conditions on the survey plan. Operable hours each month shows strong correlation with season: on average there are 8 operable hours per night available in December, but only 1-2 hours in July and August. The seeing and the sky transparency also vary with seasons. Although the seeing is worse in windy winters, and the atmospheric extinction is worse in the spring and summer, the site is adequate for the proposed scientific program of LAMOST survey. With a Monte Carlo simulation using historical data on the site condition, we find that the available observation hours constrain the survey footprint from 22h to 16h in right ascension; the sky brightness allows LAMOST to obtain the limit magnitude of V = 19.5mag with S/N = 10., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in RAA

We describe the target selection algorithm for the low latitude disk portion of the LAMOST Pilot Survey, which aims to test systems in preparation for the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. We use the PPMXL (Roeser et al. 2010) astrometric catalog, which provides positions, proper motions, B/R/I magnitudes (mostly) from USNO-B (Monet et al. 2003) and J/H/Ks from The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS, see Skrutskie et al. 2006) as well. We chose 8 plates along the Galactic plane, in the region $0^\circ<\alpha<67^\circ$ and $42^\circ<\delta<59^\circ$, that cover 22 known open clusters with a range of ages. Adjacent plates may have small overlapping. Each plate covers an area $2.5^\circ$ in radius,with central star (for Shack-Hartmann guider) brighter than $\sim8^{\rm th}$ magnitude. For each plate, we create an input catalog in the magnitude range $11.3

We use samples of local main-sequence stars to show that the radial gradient of [Fe/H] in the thin disk of the Milky Way decreases with mean effective stellar temperature. Many of these stars are visiting the solar neighborhood from the inner and outer Galaxy. We use the angular momentum of each star about the Galactic center to determine the guiding center radius and to eliminate the effects of epicyclic motion, which would otherwise blur the estimated gradients. We interpret the effective temperature as a proxy for mean age, and conclude that the decreasing gradient is consistent with the predictions of radial mixing due to transient spiral patterns. We find some evidence that the trend of decreasing gradient with increasing mean age breaks to a constant gradient for samples of stars whose main-sequence life-times exceed the likely age of the thin disk., Comment: Accepted to appear in ApJ, 8 pages, 8 figures

When a satellite galaxy falls into a massive dark matter halo, it suffers the dynamical friction force which drag it into the halo center and finally it merger with the central galaxy. The time interval between entry and merger is called as the dynamical friction timescale (T_df). Many studies have been dedicated to derive T_df using analytical models or N-body simulations. These studies have obtained qualitative agreements on how T_df depends on the orbit parameters, and mass ratio between satellite and host halo. However, there are still disagreements on the accurate form of T_df . In this paper, we present a semi-analytical model to predict T_df and we focus on interpreting the discrepancies among different studies. We find that the treatment of mass loss from satellite by tidal stripping dominates the behavior of T_df . Using an analytical model, we study the evolution of subhalo, including its mass, angular momentum and merging time-scale. This model considers the dominant processes governing subhalo evolution, such as dynamical friction, tidal stripping and tidal heating. We find that in order to best match the evolution of angular momentum measured from N-body simulation, mass stripping by tidal force should become inefficient after subhalo has experienced a few passages of pericenter. It is also found that the often used Coulomb logarithm $\ln M/m$ has to be revised to best fit the merging time-scales from simulation. Combining the analytical model with the Extended Press-Schechter (EPS) based merger trees, we study the subhalo mass function, and their spatial distribution in a Milky-Way (MW) type halo. By tuning the tidal stripping efficiency, we can gain a better match to the subhalo mass function from simulation. The predicted distribution of subhaloes is found to agree with the distribution of MW satellites, but is more concentrated than the simulation results. The radial distribution of subhaloes depends weakly on subhaloes mass at both present day and the time of accretion, but strongly on the accretion time. Using the improved model, we measure the second moment of the subhalo occupation distribution, and it agrees well with the results of Kravtsov et al. (2004a) and Zheng et al. The Tully-Fisher relation of spiral galaxies shows notable dependence on morphological types, with earlier type spirals having systematically lower luminosity at fixed maximum rotation velocity $V_{max}$. This decrement of luminosity is more significant in shorter wavelengths. By modeling the rotation curve and stellar population of different morphological type spiral galaxies in combination, we find the $V_{max}$ of spiral galaxies is weakly dependent on the morphological type, whereas the difference of the stellar population originating from the bulge disk composition effect mainly account for the morphological type dependence of the Tully-Fisher relation., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, ApJ accepted

We use a large sample of galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Two Micro All Sky Survey (2MASS) to present Color-Magnitude Relations (CMRs) for late-type galaxies in both optical and optical-infrared bands. A sample from SDSS Data Release 4 (DR4) is selected to investigate the optical properties. Optical-infrared colors are estimated from a position matched sample of DR4 and 2MASS, in which the photometric aperture mismatch between these two surveys is carefully corrected. It is shown that, after correcting the dust attenuation, the optical colors for faint galaxies (i.e. $M_r > -21$) have very weak correlation with the luminosity, while the optical colors for bright galaxies (i.e. $M_r < -21$) are redder for more luminous galaxies. All (optical, optical-infrared and infrared) colors show similar but stronger correlations with stellar mass than with absolute magnitude. The optical colors correlate more strongly with stellar mass surface density than with stellar mass, while optical-infrared and infrared colors show stronger correlations with stellar mass. By comparing the observed colors of our sample galaxies with the colors predicted by stellar population synthesis model, we find that massive late-type galaxies have older and higher metallicity stellar population than less massive galaxies. This suggests that CMRs for late-type galaxies are trends defined by the combination of stellar mean age and metallicity. Moreover, our results suggest that the stellar mean metallicity of late-type galaxy is mainly determined by its stellar mass, while the star formation history is mainly regulated by the stellar mass surface density., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRAS
