29. The electrochemical failure mechanism investigation of Li1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3 solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract

NASICON-type Li1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3 (LATP) is a representative solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, superior air/water stability, as well as low toxicity and manufacturing cost. The rapid development of LATP, however, is hindered because of the side reaction between LATP and Li metal. To address this issue, here we focused on the electrochemical failure of the LATP-based lithium metal batteries with varied characterization. Herein, we found that the degradation of LATP led to the formation of cracks, which would decrease the Li+ diffusion coefficient and cause severe concentration polarization. The bad interfacial Li+ transport kinetics was found to be responsible for the rapid discharge capacity fading and cell failure of the solid-state batteries. The AM-FM and finite element analysis indicated that the decomposed LATP region possesses relatively low Young's modulus and large volume, along with a nonuniform degradation reaction. The large elastic and volume mismatches were blamed for the stress concentration, which means that LATP undergoes stress cracks. We highlight that the inhomogeneity of the decomposed reaction played an important role in the cell failure of the LATP-based lithium metal batteries, which could be advantageously used to reach interesting battery performance. Abstract

The sodium super-ionic conductor (NASICON)-type solid-state electrolyte Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 (LATP) is an attractive alternative to liquid electrolytes for lithium batteries. The rapid development of LATP, however, is hindered by its poor interfacial compatibilities against the Li metal. Herein, a flexible membrane coating layer consisting of Mg3N2 and PVDF has been adopted to modify LATP via a simple drop-casting method. A multifunctional interlayer with Mg, LiF and Li3N is in situ constructed by the reaction of the coating layer with the Li metal. The decomposition of LATP has been restrained and interfacial ionic transport kinetics has been improved with the modification. Benefitting from the multifunctional interlayer, the critical current density of LATP is improved from 0.34 mA cm−2 to 0.76 mA cm−2. The symmetric cells assembled with the modified LATP exhibit a stable cycle for more than 1000 h at 0.20 mA cm−2, and the Li/LiFePO4 cells after modification have a capacity retention of 80% after 385 cycles at 2C. Abstract

For the first time, rod-like β-Ni(OH)2 was synthesized through the composite-hydroxide-mediated (CHM) method with NiCl2·6H2O as raw material and PEG20000 as modifier. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra revealed the presence of new functional groups on the surface of the β-Ni(OH)2 after modified, which means better adsorption efficiency. In adsorption experiments with Congo Red (CR), the adsorption capacity for modified β-Ni(OH)2 was 149.25 mg g−1, which was a better adsorption capacity compared with some previously reported Ni(OH)2.
