It also re-examines the 1998 article "Heroines in Newbery Medal Award Winners: Seventy-five Years of Change," by Mara Houdyshell and Janice Kirkland. Author Kimberly Gordon describes adolescent resiliency of protagonists, such as Billie Jo, Katie, and Lucky, as the ability to thrive, increase competence, and mature during adverse circumstances. It cites a number of researches that note that realistic female characters provide positive role modeling.
