5. Differences in clinical features and mental health service use in bipolar disorder across the lifespan

Abstract

Objective: Because of the scarcity of research in geriatric bipolar disorder, the authors examined the prevalence, clinical features, and service use of persons with bipolar disorder among older adults treated in a large public mental health system. Methods: From San Diego County's Adult and Older-Adult Mental Health Services database (N=34,970, fiscal year 2002-2003), the authors selected patients with bipolar disorder, divided them into three age-groups (young: age 18-39, middle-aged: age 40-59, and elderly: age 60+) and compared them on demographic, clinical, and mental health service use characteristics. Results: The authors identified 2,903 patients who received services for bipolar disorder at least once during the fiscal year, accounting for a slightly lower proportion of diagnosis among elderly patients (7.0%) than middle-aged (8.7%) or younger groups (8.3%). Elderly patients were less likely to have substance use disorder comorbidity, but more likely to have a cognitive disorder diagnosis and lower global functioning scores than their younger counterparts. Elderly bipolar patients were less likely than younger groups to use inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room psychiatric care, but more likely to use case-management and conservator services, Discussion: Bipolar disorder was only slightly less common among elderly patients in a large, public mental health system, compared to younger age groups. Available clinical data revealed a mixed picture of bipolar disorder in late life, with more functional and cognitive impairment and less substance use disorder comorbidity and use of acute psychiatric services. Our findings suggest that older adults with bipolar disorder have unique mental health service needs.

10. Urban vegetable contamination - The role of adhering particles and their significance for human exposure

Abstract

While urban-grown vegetables could help combat future food insecurity, the elevated levels of toxic metals in urban soils need to be met with measures that minimise transfer to crops. The study firstly examines soil/dust particle inclusion in leafy vegetables and its contribution to vegetable metals (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn), using vegetable, soil and dust data from an open-field urban farm in southeastern Sweden. Titanium concentrations were used to assess soil/dust adherence. Results showed that vegetables contained 0.05–1.3 wt% of adhering particles (AP) even after washing. With 0.5 % AP, an adult with an average intake of vegetables could ingest approximately 100mg of particles per day, highlighting leafy vegetables as a major route for soil/dust ingestion. The presence of adhering particles also significantly contributed to the vegetable concentrations of As (9-20%), Co (17-20%), Pb (25-29%), and Cr (33-34%). Secondly, data from an indoor experiment was used to characterise root metal uptake from 20 urban soils from Sweden, Denmark, Spain, the UK, and the Czech Republic. Combining particle adherence and root uptake data, vegetable metal concentrations were calculated for the 20 urban soils to represent hypothetical field scenarios for these. Subsequently, average daily doses were assessed for vegetable consumers (adults and 3-6 year old children), distinguishing between doses from adhering particles and root uptake. Risks were evaluated from hazard quotients (HQs; average daily doses/tolerable intakes). Lead was found to pose the greatest risk, where particle ingestion often resulted in HQs>1 across all assessed scenarios. Abstract

Technology-critical elements (TCEs) include most rare earth elements (REEs), the platinum group elements (PGEs), and Ga, Ge, In, Nb, Ta, Te, and Tl. Despite increasing recognition of their prolific release into the environment, their soil to plant transfer remains largely unknown. This paper provides an approximation of the potential for plant uptake by calculating bioconcentration factors (BCFs), defined as the concentration in edible vegetable tissues relative to that in cultivation soil. Here data were obtained from an indoor cultivation experiment growing lettuce, chard, and carrot on 22 different European urban soils. Values of BCFs were determined from concentrations of TCEs in vegetable samples after digestion with concentrated HNO3, and from concentrations in soil determined after 1) Aqua Regia digestion and, 2) diluted (0.1 M) HNO3 leaching. For comparison, BCFs were also determined for 5 traditional metal contaminants (TMCs; As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn). The main conclusions of the study were that: 1) BCF values for the REEs were consistently low in the studied vegetables; 2) the BCFs for Ga and Nb were low as well; 3) the BCFs for Tl were high relative to the other measured TCEs and the traditional metal contaminants; and 4) mean BCF values for the investigated TCEs were generally highest in chard and lowest in carrot. These findings provide initial evidence that there are likely to be real and present soil–plant transfer of TCEs, especially in the case of Tl. 17. A Study of Trends in the Demand for Information Transfer. Final Report.

Abstract

The scope of the research reported here is summarized as follows: (1) consider items of information that could conceivably be transmitted electrically or electronically, (2) concentrate on domestic U.S. rather than international traffic, (3) concentrate on point-to-point service, (4) consider data collection and broadcasting services only as they affect point-to-point service and (5) consider all forms of information transfer subject only to the constraint that the information must be transformable into electrical signals. The method used to analyze trends in demand for future communications include: (1) assemble, from the literature and Stanford Research Institute (SRI) files, a list of existing or potential information transfer services; (2) select sample services from the list that are of particular interest and (3) for each of the selected services, determine a projection variable that bares some relationship to the amount of information transferred. The major findings concern the maximum amount of electrical or electronic information transfer that might reasonably be expected in the categories of: voice; video; record, data, and private wire; and written. Appendix A is the list of approximately 400 potential information transfer services compiled for the study. Appendix B is a discussion of two proposed satellite mail systems. (NH)

34. Tissue-specific activity of the blind mole rat and the two nucleotide-mutated mouse [alpha]B-crystallin promoter in transgenic mice

Abstract

The [alpha]B-crystallin and HspB2 genes are located [approximately equal to] 0.9 kb apart in a head-to-head arrangement in mammals. Previous experiments have shown that a truncated -668/+45 [alpha]B-crystallin enhancer/promoter fragment from blind mole rats (Spalax ehrenbergl), which have nonfunctional lenses, lacks lens activity and has enhanced muscle activity in transgenic mice. Here we show that the full-length mole rat [alpha]B-crystallin intergenic region behaves similarly in transgenic mice. A two-nucleotide mutation ([sup.-273]CA [right arrow] G) in the mouse [alpha]B-crystallin enhancer/promoter fragment mimicking the wild-type mole rat sequence functionally converted the mouse promoter fragment to that of the wild-type mole rat promoter when tested in transgenic mice. The reciprocal mutation in the mole rat promoter fragment ([sup.-272]G [right arrow] CA) did not affect its activity. Oligonucleotides from the wild-type mouse and mole rat [alpha]B-crystallin promoter region under study formed distinct complexes with nuclear proteins from cultured cells. The mouse mutant sequence lost binding ability, whereas the mutated mole rat sequence gained the ability to form a complex similar in size to that of the wild-type mouse oligonucleotide. Our data support the idea that blind mole rats' [alpha]B-crystallin promoter activity was modified during the evolution of subterranean life and shows that tissue-specific promoter activity can be modulated by changing as few as two apparently neutral nucleotides in the mouse [alpha]B-crystallin enhancer region, implying the importance of the context of regulatory sequences for promoter activity. evolution | gene expression | lens | muscle

Abstract

MSc (Astrophysical Sciences), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus In this dissertation, we looked at the cosmological constraints of some f(R)-modi ed gravity models, such as f(R) = Rn (our rst toy model), f(R) = R + Rn (our second toy model), and more realistic ones like the Starobinsky and Hu-Sawicki models. We used 236 intermediate-redshift and 123 low-redshift Supernovae Type 1A data obtained from the SDSS-II/SNLS3 Joint Light-curve Analysis (JLA), with absolute magnitudes, for the B- lter, found on the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED). We also developed a Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) simulation to find the best- fitting luminosity distance function value for each combination of cosmological parameters, namely the matter density distribution ohm m and the Hubble uncertainty parameter h (fi rstly for the ACDM model and then for the f(R)-gravity models). We then used the ACDM model results to constrain the priors for the f(R)-gravity models. We assumed a flat universe ohm k = 0 and a radiation density distribution ohm r that is negligible to simplify these models. Therefore, the only difference between the ACDM model and f(R)-gravity models are the dark energy component and the arbitrary free parameters. This gave us an indication if there exist viable f(R)-gravity models when we compared them statistically to the results of the ACDM model. Furthermore, we developed a numerical method to solve the models to which we were not able to find an analytical solution, and incorporated it into the MCMC simulation. We found 2 viable models, namely the Starobinsky model and a reduced version of the Starobinsky model. Both were able to predict an accelerating universe. We also found a further three models that were able to t the data, but were statistically rejected, namely the second toy model where n is fixed to the parameter values of n = 0 and n = 2, as well as the Hu-Sawicki model. Lastly, we found a further three models that were not able to t the supernova data and as a consequence were statistically rejected, namely the first toy model, and the second toy model for fixed n-values of n = 1/2 and n = 1. Therefore, we were able to constrain the viability of some of the f(R)-gravity models with cosmological data. Masters
