Background: There is sparse evidence on the joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on the intensive margin of labour supply, particularly in developing countries. We interact ill-health and health shocks with access to social protection and estimate their joint effects on weekly hours of work. Methods: We employ a zero-inflated Poisson model to assess joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on weekly hours of work exploiting pooled repeated cross-sectional data from Malawi. Results: We find that overall, individuals who suffered from ill-health or a health shock, including an illness/injury, a hospital admission or a chronic illness and benefited from social protection, reduced their weekly hours of work. Conclusions: The study provides novel empirical evidence on the potential joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on the intensive margin of labour supply, shedding light on the role social protection can play in developing countries. Women's contribution to livestock raising, in terms of both work participation and hours of work, is underestimated in India as elsewhere in the world. This is primarily because of limitations of data available in labour force surveys, many of which can be addressed by time use surveys (TUSs). This paper, first, explores data from a small TUS conducted in two villages of Karnataka. Insights from our ground-level study are tested econometrically by applying a two-way Heckman model to unit data from India's first national TUS, 2019. We estimated that 11 per cent of rural women participated in livestock raising and spent an average of 16 h a week. Age and education were significant factors: younger and educated women were less likely to engage in livestock raising, an observation linked to current technology and drudgery of work. This paper analyzes the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the within-household gender gap in relation to paid work hours in full-time employed heterosexual couples in Spain. Using the Spanish Labor Force Survey (2019–2020) and a difference-in-differences method, we analyze three stages of the pandemic: strict lockdown, de-escalation, and partial closures to study the short-term effects and potential medium-term effects on gender inequality in terms of paid work hours. Our results suggest that during the strict lockdown period there was a tendency to fall back on traditional family gendered patterns to manage the work–life balance, especially when young children are present in male-headed households. However, this phenomenon seems to be a short-term consequence of the pandemic. The sector of activity (essential or non-essential) has also played a key role, the gender gap increased in male-headed households with female partners employed in non-essential sectors. Regulatory guidance materials for fatigue management typically advise that employees be provided with days or weeks of advance notice of schedules/rosters. However, the scientific evidence underpinning this advice is unclear. A systematic search was performed on current peer reviewed literature addressing advance notice periods, which found three relevant studies. A subsequent search of grey literature to determine the quality of evidence for the recommendation for advance notice periods returned 37 relevant documents. This review found that fatigue management guidance materials frequently advocated advance notice for work shifts but did not provide empirical evidence to underpin the advice. Although it is logical to suggest that longer notice periods may result in increased opportunities for pre-work preparations, improved sleep, and reduced worker fatigue, the current guidance appears to be premised on this reasoning rather than empirical evidence. Paradoxically, it is possible that advance notice could be counterproductive, as too much may result in frequent alterations to the schedule, particularly where adjustments to start and end times of the work period are not uncommon (e.g., road transport, rail). To assist organisations in determining the appropriate amount of advance notice to provide, we propose a novel theoretical framework to conceptualise advance notice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Information on the hours of work of UK doctors is limited, and what exists relies on self-designed questionnaires in England. Aim: To understand trends in the annual stock of physicians' hours and their main determinants. Design & setting: A quantitative study in which data were collected from the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) between 1998 and 2020, under the End User Licence (EUL), in the UK. Method: Descriptive and linear regression models of labour supply for doctors (pooled), GPs, and hospital doctors. Results: Between 1998 and 2020, while the headcount of doctors grew by 128.79% for hospital doctors and 45.28% for GPs, hours of work dropped by 20.80% for hospital doctors and 25.37% for GPs. Hence, the annual stock of hours grew by 81.20% for hospital doctors but by a modest 8.42% for GPs. Female doctors worked 8.68 fewer hours than males, with GPs reporting the largest reduction (-11.82 hours, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -13.31 to -10.33 and -6.75, 95% CI = -9.32 to -4.19, in the full specification). Family decisions are associated with a fall in doctors' work hours and modest growth in the annual stock of hours. These determinants and overtime are drivers of part-time work. Conclusion: Despite the increase in the headcount of GPs, their hours of work dropped over the study period, generating a more steady and modest growth in their total annual stock of hours compared with hospital doctors. A sufficiently large working capital, a long-operating business, skilled and experienced employees, as well as determining the appropriate business opening and closing hours, all can increase the chances of getting more visitors, increasing customer trust, and higher business revenue. This study aims to determine the influence of working capital, number of employees, length of business operation, and working hours on the income of entrepreneurs in Danau Cipondoh. This research uses a quantitative descriptive type and the sampling technique used is saturated sampling. The population and sample size are both 63 entrepreneurs. The partial results of the study indicate that working capital and the number of employees do not have a significant effect on income. However, the length of business operation and working hours have a significant effect on income. Entrepreneurs in Danau Cipondoh do not have sufficient capital, but maintaining good product quality and service quality results in increased visitors and revenue. The length of business operation makes entrepreneurs more diligent in running their business and producing high work productivity and income. With sufficient skilled workers, the business can run well, leading to an increase in sales volume and revenue. Extending working hours has an impact on increasing sales volume and revenue. The implications of this study are: (1) Entrepreneurs need to manage working capital well, improve efficiency, and productivity; (2) Tourism destination managers need to improve infrastructure, facilities, and promotion; (3) The government of Tangerang Kota needs to provide training, mentoring, financing, facilities, and supervision for business activities.

What changes affected the working time of employees required to work from home by the 2020 French health measures? Drawing on a qualitative survey of a municipal water company, based on interviews, direct observations, and questionnaires, the author shows how telework prompted by the COVID‐19 pandemic restructured working time and redistributed the power of regulation. During lockdown periods, working hours were extended and work rhythms changed, with considerable variation depending on the family configuration: confinement with family was not conducive to extended working hours, instead tending to fragment them, whereas isolated teleworkers experienced the opposite effect. It is widely recognized that aggregate employment dynamics is characterized by hysteresis. In the presence of hysteresis, the long run level of employment instead of being unique and history-independent, depends on the adjustment path that is taken, which includes the monetary and fiscal measures. It is thus important to study the presence of hysteresis in the macrodynamics of employment to understand whether the recession followed 2007s financial crisis will have permanent effects, and prospectively to conduct fiscal and monetary policies. The main contribution of this paper is to analyse the relative impact of the main sources hysteresis (non-convex adjustment costs, uncertainty and the flexibility of working time arrangements) to the width of the employment band of inaction. For that purpose, a switching employment equation was estimated from a computational implementation of the linear play model of hysteresis. From our results we found significant hysteresis effects in the aggregate employment dynamics caused by the presence of non-convex adjustment costs as uncertainty. We also found that the flexibility firms may have to adjust labour input by varying the number of hours of work per employee helps to mitigate the effect of uncertainty upon the band of inaction. Objective: We study the role of employment deprivation and severe poverty at the household level on youth living arrangements in Spain in three different business cycle periods. Background: Previous evidence has shown that recessions in Southern European countries make young individuals turn to their families for financial protection. Most analyses assume that these cohabiting decisions are only related to the young individual's employment status while other household members’ employment deprivation is irrelevant. Method: We use information from the Quarterly Labour Force Survey between 2005 and 2017 and a very flexible indicator to measure the dimension of employment deprivation at the household level and estimate its role on the probability of being emancipated with a linear probability model. To avoid reverse causation, we also estimate two seemingly unrelated regressions of the probability of cohabiting with parents and the dimension of household employment deprivation. Results: Our results confirm that the Great Recession increased the probability of parental co-habitation, even if with some delay in relation to the business cycle. We reject the assumption about the irrelevance of other household member’s employment deprivation on youth cohabitation decisions because its dimension determines them. Conclusion: Policies aiming to improve emancipation should not only increase youth labour market opportunities but provide either more employment hours or more income transfers to those living in households where young individuals live.

Purpose: This purpose of the study is to examine the labour supply decisions with respect to earnings and considers whether we are willing or indeed able to work less. The authors specifically focus on the three points of time, i.e. beginning of the sample, pre and post Global Financial Crisis. Design/methodology/approach: The study regression analysis by utilises microdata from the UK Labour Force Survey (LFS) regarding individual hours worked in three separate survey periods: 1994q2, 2007q2 and 2015q2 Findings: The results suggest that we are far from income-satiated. The elasticity of hours worked with respect to earnings is stubbornly inelastic and for some demographic cohorts positive, implying the desire to work more. The authors find that job flexibility matters in facilitating reduced hours of work, but that jobs are not becoming more flexible. The authors also do see a secular reduction in hours worked, accompanied by a shift to working later in life, but these appear to be down to factors other than higher wages. Research limitations/implications: The study has important research implications in terms of understanding the dynamics of the labour market on the whole and in the pre and post global financial crisis periods. Practical implications: The research has profound policy implication in terms of labour and employment policy. Social implications: There are important social implications, particularly in terms of household labour supply decisions and substitution between work and leisure. Originality/value: The study has significant element of originality in terms of understanding the changing dynamics of labour market. This study investigates patterns of seasonal variation in hours worked by women employed in home-based industrial production in Sweden in the early 20th century. Previous studies often describe workers in this type of production as the most flexible segment of industrial workers, and highly dependent on seasonal fluctuations in supply and demand. However, few have studied this empirically. This study relies on data from interviews with home-based workers. Principal component analysis is used to identify seasonal patterns and OLS regressions to identify the factors driving these fluctuations. The results show surprisingly stable patterns in hours worked, most women worked 8–10 hours per day all year. Thus, while home-based workers were flexible in the sense that they all worked on piece-work contracts and provided their own means of production and place of work, their work was not essentially irregular or largely fluctuating by supply- or demand-driven seasonal variations. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to construct and test an antecedent relationship path model for the leisure involvement of Taiwan expatriate managers working in Mainland China. A leisure temporal-spatial involvement (LTSI) was developed. Design/methodology/approach: Burnout, perceived freedom in leisure and leisure coping strategies were proposed in the conceptual model as antecedents of leisure involvement. A questionnaire survey gathered information on the characteristics of respondents, including demographic/socio-economic details, expatriate profile and leisure activity participation. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used in this research to measure the relationships among the four scale variables (job burnout, perceived freedom in leisure, leisure coping strategies and leisure involvement). Findings: The expatriate managers experienced high burnout levels, particularly in the form of exhaustion. Their leisure involvement was mainly influenced by perceived freedom in leisure. Research limitations/implications: This work contributes to the research on leisure and expatriation in several ways. It is one of the first empirical studies to examine prominent leisure concepts (freedom, coping and involvement) within the milieu of expatriation. The findings provide further support to the notion of the "presumed cultural similarity paradox," in that expatriates of Chinese ethnicity still had significant adjustment difficulties in Mainland China. The research again confirms the challenges of Mainland China as an expatriation destination. Practical implications: The research results have significant practical value and may assist Taiwan-capital enterprises in improving expatriates' leisure life management. The section on Managerial and policy implications outlines the implications for the actors involved. Social implications: This work has social implications since the Taiwan expatriate managers are not effectively adjusting to their work–life environments in Guangzhou. Greater social contact between locals and these managers is recommended in the future. Originality/value: A new scale for leisure involvement (LTSI), expressed in temporal and spatial dimensions, is developed to fit the particular situations faced by expatriates. We analyze the impact of high youth minimum wages, relying on two decades of linked employer–employee data and a major law change. Alternative treatment/control groups follow from two strands of the literature, one tracking low‐skilled workers employed before the law change, who are eligible for a large wage increase, and one tracking the employment of full cohorts, whether working or in school when the law changed. High minimum wages led to a short‐term wage gain, which faded over time. They did not jeopardize employment prospects. Bus operators are exposed to many occupational hazards, ranging from workplace violence to air pollution to biohazards. Through a summer project, Occupational Health Internship Program students explored bus operators' health and safety concerns at the Amalgamated Transit Union Local #265 in San Jose, CA. Pilot surveys and individual interviews were used to identify operators' perspectives on split shifts. A majority of a small sample of 109 bus operators reported dissatisfaction with split shifts, experience with physical and mental fatigue, stress from working these shifts, and inability to focus on immediate tasks due to working split shifts. Some operators preferred split shifts for various reasons, including having time to perform errands, eat lunch, and rest. Operators' suggestions to improve route scheduling include split shift observations by management, upward communication with senior management, and improvement of bus yard and relief point facilities where operators take their breaks between shifts. In 2018, the Australian labour market continued to see only very moderate wages growth despite strong employment growth and low unemployment. This remains an international phenomenon with underlying economic and legal structural causes. Employment growth was concentrated in part-time jobs for both males and females, and in both manufacturing and white-collar industries. The Fair Work Commission increased the National Minimum Wage by 3.5%, a higher percentage increase than previous years but one that reflected higher growth in average earnings and inflation. The climate surrounding agreement making was less febrile than in recent years, with fewer high-profile attempts to terminate existing enterprise agreements. However, collective bargaining coverage in the private sector continues to decline to historic lows. Changes to skilled migration were the most significant shift in labour market policy in 2018, with a significant reduction in the number of permanent skilled migrants and a new temporary skilled migrant visa category with much stricter eligibility requirements. If sustained, this reduction may contribute to increasing pressure on wages in the years to come. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the impact of the 2016 increase in the Irish minimum wage on the hours worked and the probability of job loss of minimum‐wage workers. We pay particular attention to temporary‐contract workers, who may be more susceptible to changes to their working conditions than permanent employees. The results indicate that the increase in the minimum wage had a negative and statistically significant effect on the hours worked of minimum‐wage workers, with an average reduction of approximately 0.6 hours per week. For temporary workers, the effect was greater, with a decline of approximately 3 hours per week. We find no evidence that the increase in the minimum wage led to an increased probability of becoming jobless in the six‐month period following the rate change, nor did it affect employment shares in sectors employing large numbers of minimum‐wage workers. Purpose: This article aimed to examine the causal relationships of hours of work with health behaviors and health outcomes.Method: The data were derived from Japan Household Panel Survey/Keio Household Panel Survey. In total, data from 2677 men and 2170 women were analyzed to show the effects of hours of work on body mass index, smoking, and sleeping hours. To deal with the potential endogeneity of decisions about hours of work, the instrumental variable approach was used.Results: Hours of work had a negative impact on hours of sleep among men (coefficient [coef.], -0.371; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.519 to -0.223). Longer hours of work also increased the probability of men being obese (coef., 1.108; 95% CI, 0.234-1.981) and the number of cigarettes they smoked each day (coef., 1.007; 95% CI, 0.037-1.978). For women, longer hours of work increased the probability of being obese (coef., 0.029; 95% CI, 0.009-0.050) and decreased the hours of sleep (coef., -0.416; 95% CI, -0.618 to -0.214).Conclusions: This article suggests that the health consequences of long hours of work include health behaviors and health outcomes that can lead to higher risks of morbidity and mortality. This annual survey of significant court and tribunal decisions in Australia in 2017 covers changes to the award safety net implemented through the 4-yearly review, including in relation to penalty rates and casual employment. It outlines developments in collective bargaining, focusing on agreement-making, protected industrial action, the good faith bargaining provisions and the rise in successful applications by employers for termination of agreements. A Queensland decision considering community pickets and the interaction between state peaceful assembly legislation and the Fair Work Act is also noted. Decisions on workplace discrimination show that the courts are still grappling with Fair Work Act provisions in this area, and taking divergent approaches. The survey also discusses a successful accessorial liability action taken by the Fair Work Ombudsman, which is significant for both internal and external business advisors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the effect of paid work by coupled parents of young children on the joint decisions to spend time engaged in childcare. We explore this using Australian Time-Use Survey data from 2006. We examine the effect of paid work in terms of the effect that total work time on a given day has on the amount of time spent on childcare; the allocation of time on activities across work and non-work days; and the effect of non-traditional work hours. The results show that mothers perform a large share of childcare, irrespective of their earning power or their partner's availability to take on some of these tasks. The use of formal and informal childcare by others allows the mother to balance the competing demands of work and her own childcare; an effect that does not hold for fathers. These effects on childcare are also almost solely concentrated in the routine component of childcare (e.g. preparing meals, changing nappies), with each parent 'protecting' interactive childcare from the effect of both paid work and the relative availability of their partner to take on some of this childcare. The article explores the impact of having a first-born child on couples' work and family, which covers economic resources, gender attitudes, workplace flexibility and availability of non-parental childcare. Topics discussed include factors playing on mothers' decision to continue working, how work hours govern mothers' decision to stay or change her occupation, and factors that affect allocation of childcare time for both first-time parents.
