11. In search of presence : disappearance and memory in Mexico

Abstract

This thesis explores memory and memorialisation in response to contemporary disappearances in Mexico. Unlike previous cases of enforced disappearance under military dictatorship, in Mexico disappearance is taking place in an electoral democracy under, but not explained by, the context of the war on drugs. Using ethnographic, participatory, and collaborative methods, I explore memorials and sites of memory, arts-based projects responding to disappearance, and the actions of relatives searching for the disappeared and pursuing justice, to discuss what is revealed in the wake of disappearance. Rather than a focus on typical sites that narrate memory, I prioritise lived experiences of memory in the everyday lives of people who are living with the presence of absence. This thesis argues that how people respond to and construct life around disappearance reveals the precarity of liberal modernity, the politics of time and space, and relationality between people and with their environments. The people in this thesis are engaging in a politics of memory, resisting narratives that enact a politics of time to place unresolved injustices in the past, and using their own conceptualisations of memory to build community. Furthermore, I demonstrate how the process of making is a meaningful site of memory and its construction. In the processes of memorialising, making, searching, connecting, and rebuilding that we see throughout the thesis, transformations take place. These are transformations of people, places, objects, communities and more, which are overlooked locations of memory and politics. In these ways this thesis disrupts dominant conceptualisations of memory and disappearance and argues for a broadening of the ways we think and do memory. Note on translation: all translations from Spanish to English are the author's.

Abstract

Cemeteries in the UK and Ireland are typically viewed as a final 'place of rest' for the deceased where their remains will not be disturbed. This sense is at least in some part created by the norm of in-perpetuity grave rights in these countries. Yet while 'in-perpetuity' suggests fixity, it is defined and managed in varying ways in different settings, including an ultimate fixed term for some graves and cemeteries. Over decades, in-perpetuity cemeteries and cemetery policies adapt to and reflect changes in cultural trends, national and local politics, cemetery management, planning, regeneration, and other pressures on land, as well as the changes that occur in the natural environment in which they are situated. In this article, we explore the rhythms and temporalities of cemeteries characterised by in-perpetuity grave rights, by looking at how the tensions between perpetuity and change are perceived, experienced, and managed by burial service staff and varied communities who use them. In-perpetuity grave rights impact the management of cemeteries, their material form, and how they are used. A focus on the temporalities and rhythms of cemeteries in the UK and Ireland enables a reconsideration of the concepts of perpetuity and change in death and remembrance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Introduction: Continuity, Change and Contestation in Urban Deathscapes

Abstract

Places associated with death, dying and the dead are all around us. This is perhaps especially so in urban contexts, where land scarcity and population density bring places to work, live, play and mourn near each other. In our edited volume, we bring together international perspectives on urban deathscapes: deathscapes located in and marked by the urban. Bringing together different empirical understandings of death within urban contexts, we highlight three insights: urban deathscapes are produced and constructed by multiple actors; they reflect dynamic social and cultural spatial and temporal factors; and they are influenced by certain local, national and international death mentalities. Taking these three aspects together, we consider urban deathscapes to be physical, embodied, material, and virtual spaces reflecting contemporary dynamics, marked by diversities, multiplicities and fluidities which are common to areas of high population density. In these spaces, change, contestation and/or continuity happen, through time and simultaneously.

Abstract

In this chapter, we use a comparative approach to explore the nuanced experiences of disposition in various Muslim communities in diverse social, cultural, and policy contexts. Through a sample of cases from different countries in Northwest Europe (Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden and Norway), we see how Muslim communities negotiate burial space in countries where Islamic burial is framed as a ‘minority’ practice. We first outline Islamic deathscapes in this region and locate this within literature on burial practices, identity, and belonging. We then explore three specific issues within this: the choice of whether migrant Muslims are buried in their country of origin or the town they are living in; the physical segregation and experience of Islamic burial spaces; and Islamic memorial and grave aesthetics. This reveals that current Islamic burial in Northwest Europe is not simply a blending of minority and majority norms, but a much more complex, fluid, and responsive field.

We identify and analyse practices and management regimes around burial and handling of ashes across eight case study towns within six Northern European countries. We analyse management of cemeteries and crematoria gardens, majority practices and provision for minority communities, including various burial types, cremated remains, the re-use of graves, and costs for interments. Comparative data is drawn from analysis of national and local regulations, interviews with stakeholders, and observations at cemeteries and crematoria gardens. The findings show significant variation in national and local regulations and practices for burial and cremation particularly around the re-use of graves, handling of ashes and costs for grave space and cremation. We identify the opportunities and constraints of these variations in terms of accessibility, diversity and equality; and argue for national directions to avoid unequal treatment within nations. Furthermore, we stress the importance of a liberal and inclusive management of European cemeteries and crematoria gardens.

Abstract

This chapter explore the notion of ‘home’ in practices of bodily disposition and remembrance for minority ethnic and migrant communities. It draws on a larger study of minority cemetery and crematoria provision across medium sized towns in England and Wales. Using mapping, focus groups, key participant and biographical interviews across four case study towns, we explore how ‘translocal’ identities can shape and be shaped by changing practices on the ground. We argue that understanding everyday deathscapes is a vital part of understanding everyday life, and these spaces refract and distil the ways home is made, claimed and challenged for people of different faith and familial backgrounds. Reflecting postcolonial negotiations of “throwntogetherness” (Massey 2005), local-transnational diasporic identity (Brah 1999) and “living with difference” (Amin 2002), we see how everyday practices and encounters around death and deathscapes shape the possibilities of establishing and engendering belonging of diverse groups in precise, yet underexplored, locations.

Abstract

The CeMi research project highlights the varied cultural and religious funerary needs in north west Europe, the associated challenges and the different ways in which both communities and service providers (e.g. cemetery-crematorium managers, town planners and funeral directors) respond to them, potentially contributing to the EU inclusion strategy. This report shares the findings from a HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) funded study of eight mid-sized municipalities in six north west European countries: Cork (The Republic of Ireland), Drammen (Norway), Dundee (Scotland, UK), Leeuwarden and Maastricht (Netherlands), Luxembourg City (Luxembourg), Eskilstuna and Umeå (Sweden). It highlights challenges and best practices.
