For a special issue on Solidarity within the LGBTQ + community edited by Finn Mackay and Nikki Hayfield, Ella Ben Hagai, the editor of the Journal of Lesbian Studies interviewed Susan Stryker. Susan Stryker is a lesbian historian whose research, books, and films were pathbreaking in creating the field of trans* studies. I interviewed Susan to better understand the connections between queer cultures and the emergence of trans scholarship. I was also interested in her perspectives on the sort of solidarities that played a role in the trans revolution today. In the last part of the interview, I discuss with Stryker the political obstacles facing trans people and forms of solidarity necessary to face the current backlash in the U.S. against LGBTQ + people in general. In her interview, Stryker highlights the connection between BDSM subcultures, women of color feminism, and the emergence of trans* scholarship. She discusses the historical galvanization of trans and queer resistance around police violence and carceral logics, drawing lessons for overcoming current divisions in the queer community. Speaking about contemporary politics in the United States, Stryker illuminates the backlash against feminism and transgender rights and provides inspiration toward a strategy of united front politics. The rapid expansion of online education compels debate over what accessible higher education should be, how it should be delivered, and whom it should serve. While geographers remain relatively marginal to this debate, they have engaged the question of the neoliberal university, where online education is sometimes characterized as another instantiation of the neoliberal turn. This paper draws geographies of education scholarship into productive conversation with online teaching and learning, critical pedagogy, and public geographies literatures to argue that geographers can reframe the debate over online education and reposition it as a productive space of critical dialogue, inquiry, and encounter. Riparian corridors are sites of highly interdependent and constantly emergent social and ecological relations. Concealed below the cottonwood-willow canopies of these narrow, forested corridors, a long history of intensive human activity intersects with the disproportionately high biodiversity of these ecologically rich environments. In the arid Arizona/Sonora border region, bi-national riparian corridors are further marked by complex, discursively asymmetrical political and environmental governance regimes. The San Pedro River, a transboundary waterway segmented by distinct management regimes, originates in northern Sonora, Mexico, in the mountains near Cananea, and flows north, crossing the international border into Arizona. The location of the river in the borderlands introduces additional complexity, including a complex web of transnational flows and geopolitical anxieties. Since the designation of a federally protected riparian conservation area on the U.S. portion of the San Pedro River in 1988, riparian politics in the basin have sedimented around the institutional asymmetries between the U.S. and Mexican environmental policies for conservation. In this paper, I examine historically and geographically specific moments within broader processes of environmental governance and transformation, highlighting the historical production of social and environmental (dis)continuities and (a)symmetries along the San Pedro River riparian corridor. Situating the riparian area within the context of shifting geopolitical relations, I ask, "What political purpose(s) are served by the original creation of and successful persistence of the asymmetrical imaginary of the transnational riparian corridor?" Based on archival research and interviews, my findings challenge the simple assumptions of an asymmetrical narrative and instead elucidate how environmental governance regimes are historically and geographically specific and contingent.
