Ihmistieteelliset näkökulmat ovat lisääntyneet metsäsuhteiden tutkimuksessa viime vuosina. Tässä katsausartikkelissa esittelemme lyhyesti yhteiskuntatieteellisten, kulttuurintutkimuksellisten ja muiden ihmistieteellisten lähestymistapojen teoreettisia, käsitteellisiä ja empiirisiä sovelluksia. Ihmistieteelliset lähestymistavat tarjoavat metsiin ja tulevaisuuksiin liittyen näköaloja kestävyyssiirtymään ja tuovat esiin rinnakkaisten tulevaisuuspolkujen kirjon. The article introduces various theoretical, conceptual, and empirical approaches to human-forest relationship (HFR) research, a relatively new and broad field of multidisciplinary approaches to study the interactions and interfaces between humans and forests. Article is based on a questionnaire and call for authors circulated in recently established HFR research network and the HFR Research Club of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. In the article, authors with various disciplinary backgrounds reflect the diversity of HFR research, combining social sciences, humanities, and cultural research. Further, they focus on diverse interactions and interfaces between individuals, communities, and forests, and their cultural, societal and historical meanings. The article has two aims. First, to provide an overview on the various approaches within HFR research field in Finland. Second, to explore how the scientific knowledge provided by HFR research can contribute to an understanding about future challenges and need for change, and further adjust these changes and identify alternative future pathways. As a result, we argue that the multidisciplinary approaches in HFR research enable both to analyse existing HFRs in a more multivocal ways and to acknowledge the diversity of meanings that individuals and communities associate to forests. We have also identified four future challenges and changes in HFR research: 1) sustainability transitions in forestry and forest use, 2) changing the roles of forest actors and institutions, 3) changing views on human–forest relationships and 4) experiential and bodily turn in studying human–forest relationships. These aspects should be taken into account when anticipating the future prospects and potential of the Finnish forest sector and forests. For example, HFR research may highlight cultural and societal structures and processes, producing and maintaining the current ways of forest-related decision and policy making, and their way of framing forests-as-resources. Simultaneously, these frames neglect the multiplicity of other dimensions. The HFR research offers, parallel to more mainstream forest science research, several approaches that stem from different traditions of the research and alternative ways of knowledge production, and furthermore create new scientific knowledge to forest research and pave the way for alternative future pathways. peerReviewed

We have seen an emergence of transformative food studies as part of sustainability transitions. While some scholars have successfully opened up their experiences of pursuing transformation through scholar-activism, assumptions underlying researchers' choices and how scholars orient to and go about their work often remain implicit. In this article, we bring forth a practice theoretical understanding of knowledge production and advocate that researchers turn to examining their own research practice. We ask how to make our own academic knowledge production/research practice more explicit, and why it is important to do so in the context of transformative food studies. To help scholars to reflect on their own research practice, we mobilize the framework of practical activity (FPA). We draw on our own experiences in academia and use our ethnographic studies on self-reliant food production and procurement to illustrate academic knowledge production. Thus, this article provides conceptual and methodological tools for reflection on academic research practice and knowledge production. We argue that it is important for researchers to turn to and improve their own academic practice because it advances academic knowledge production in the domain of transformative food studies and beyond. While we position ourselves within the qualitative research tradition, we believe that the insights of this article can be applied more broadly in different research fields and across various methodological approaches.

Research in management and organization can only gain by being inspired from arts, culture and humanities in order to rethink practices but also to nourish its own perspectives. Life in organizations is artificially separate from ordinary life: all mundane objects are thus conducive to astonishment, inspiration, and even problematization. The unplugged subsection "voices" gives the opportunity to academics and non-academics to deliver an interpretation of an object from the cultural or artistic world. Interpreted objects mayor may not be directly related to organizational life, and may or may not resonate with the moment, but share some intriguing features. These interpretations suggest a patchwork of variations on the same object.

This short essay is based on ongoing ethnographic fieldwork that focuses on post-growth work in the global North. Some of the people I have met during my fieldwork are in the process of altering their life according to their understanding of more affirmative ways of living. Here the focus is on households that strive for self-sufficiency in terms of food. However, in order to cultivate land, one needs to access it. This essay focuses on describing self-sufficiency households’ everyday needs for private land ownership and its implications for the households. It seems to be hard to completely rid oneself of owning land because of the institutional arrangements beyond one’s immediate influence. For discussions concerning transitions toward more sustainable societies, projects exploring other ways of organising land ownership are important.

Yhteiskunnallisella yrittäjyydellä viitataan toimintaan, jossa liiketoiminnan keinoin edistetään yhteiskunnallista hyvää. Yhteiskunnallinen yrittäjyys ei ole ongelmaton käsite, mutta silti se herättää monissa toivoa nykyisten monimutkaisten globaalien ongelmien ratkaisemiseksi. Suomessa yhteiskunnallinen yrittäjyys laajana kattokäsitteenä pitää sisällään monia erilaisia toimijoita, joista osan juuret ulottuvat 1800-luvun lopulle. Tässä artikkelissa esitellään yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden toimijoita Suomessa ja kuvataan viimeisimpiä toimijoita, joihin kirjoittajan oma tutkimus keskittyy.
