We study the phase diagram of spin-triplet superconductors, considering the effect of the external magnetic field on the electrons' spins. For a given symmetry of the order parameter and a generic orientation of the field, we find that the paramagnetic limit for superconductivity diverges at low temperatures. Furthermore, we identify a range of temperatures where the transition between normal and superconducting phases becomes of the first order. When two tricritical points exist along the transition line, a first order phase transition between two superconducting phases may develop in vicinity of the tricritical point with lower temperature. We discuss the implications of our findings for the anisotropy of the upper critical field in UPt$_3$, a candidate material for triplet superconductivity, when both the paramagnetic and orbital effects are taken into account., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

When time-reversal and inversion symmetry are broken, superconducting circuits may exhibit a so-called diode effect, where the critical currents for opposite directions of the current flow differ. In recent years, this effect has been observed in a multitude of systems and the different physical ingredients that may yield such an effect are well understood. On a microscopic level, the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman field may give rise to a diode effect in a single Josephson junction. However, so far there is no analytical description of the effect within a simple model. Here we study a single channel nanowire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and in the presence of a Zeeman field. We show that the different Fermi velocities and spin projections of the two pseudo-spin bands lead to a diode effect. Simple analytical expressions for the diode efficiency can be obtained in limiting cases., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Understanding the mechanisms of qubit decoherence is a crucial prerequisite for improving the qubit performance. In this work we discuss the effects of residual Bogolyubov quasiparticles in Schr\"odinger cat qubits, either of the dissipative or Kerr type. The major difference from previous studies of quasiparticles in superconducting qubits is that the Schr\"odinger cat qubits are operated under non-equilibrium conditions. Indeed, an external microwave drive is needed to stabilize "cat states", which are superpositions of coherent degenerate eigenstates of an effective stationary Lindbladian in the rotating frame. We present a microscopic derivation of the master equation for cat qubits and express the effect of the quasiparticles as dissipators acting on the density matrix of the cat qubit. This enables us to determine the conditions under which the quasiparticles give a substantial contribution to the qubit errors.

At zero temperature, a Josephson junction coupled to an ohmic environment displays a quantum phase transition between superconducting and insulating phases, depending whether the resistance of the environment is below or above the resistance quantum. At finite temperature, this so-called Schmid transition turns into a crossover. We determine the conditions under which the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, which characterizes heat flow from a hot to cold resistor across the Josephson junction, displays universal scaling characteristic of the Schmid transition. We also discuss conditions for heat rectification to happen in the circuit. In a Josephson junction, the transfer of Cooper pairs from one superconductor to the other one can be associated with the formation of Andreev bound states. In a Josephson junction made with a semiconducting nanowire, the spin degeneracy of these Andreev states can be broken thanks to the presence of spin-orbit coupling and a finite phase difference between the two superconducting electrodes. The lifting of the spin degeneracy opened the way to the realization of Andreev spin qubits that do not require the application of a large magnetic field. So far the operation of these qubits relied on a Raman process involving two microwave tones and a third Andreev state [M. Hays et al., Science 373, 430 (2021)]. Still, time-reversal preserving impurities in the nanowire allow for spin-flip scattering processes. Here, using the formalism of scattering matrices, we show that these processes generically couple Andreev states with opposite spins. In particular, the non-vanishing current matrix element between them allows for the direct manipulation of phase-driven Andreev spin qubits, thereby circumventing the use of the above-mentioned Raman process., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

A Josephson junction may be in a stable odd parity state when a single quasiparticle is trapped in an Andreev bound state. Embedding such junction in an electromagnetic environment gives rise to a special quantum mechanics of superconducting phase that we investigate theoretically. Our analysis covers several representative cases, from the lifting of the supercurrent quench due to quasiparticle poisoning for a low ohmic impedance of the environment, to a Schmid transition in a current-biased junction that for odd parity occurs at four times bigger critical impedance. Schmid transition was introduced first as a superconductor-insulator transition in the zero-frequency response of a shunted Josephson junction in equilibrium at zero temperature. As it is typical for a quantum impurity problem, at finite frequencies the transition is broadened to a crossover. Modern attempts to find Schmid transition rely on finite-frequency measurements of a quantum circuit. We predict the frequency dependence of the admittance and reflection phase shift for a high-impedance transmission line terminated by a Josephson junction for a wide variety of devices, from a charge qubit to a transmon. Our results identify the circuit parameters allowing for the universal scaling of the responses with frequency, thus helping to identify the Schmid transition from the finite-frequency measurements., Comment: 6+5 pages, 2 figures

We study the spectral properties of disordered superconductors with Ising spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) subjected to in-plane magnetic fields. In addition to the conventional singlet pairing, we also consider the recently proposed equal-spin triplet pairing, which couples to the singlet at finite in-plane magnetic fields. While both singlet and triplet order parameters are immune to intravalley scattering, they are significantly affected by intervalley scattering. In the realistic regime of strong ISOC, we find that the properties of the superconductor are well described by a simple formula reminiscent of the well-known Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but with a modified self-consistency condition. Our results enable straightforward self-consistent calculation of singlet and triplet order parameters and the density of states of disordered Ising superconductors, which can be particularly useful for interpreting recent tunneling spectroscopy experiments in these systems. The spin susceptibility is an important probe to characterize the symmetry of the order parameter in unconventional superconductors. Among them, nonunitary triplet superconductors have attracted a lot of attention recently in the context of the search for topological superconductivity. Here, we derive a general formula for the spin susceptibility of nonunitary triplet superconductors within a single-band model of non-magnetic, centrosymmetric materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. We consider a quantum Hall (QH) region in contact with a superconductor (SC), i.e., a QH-SC junction. Due to successive Andreev reflections, the QH-SC interface hosts hybridized electron and hole edge states called chiral Andreev edge states (CAES). We theoretically study the transport properties of these CAES by using a microscopic, tight-binding model. We find that the transport properties strongly depend on the contact geometry and the value of the filling factor. In two-dimensional electron systems with broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries, a Josephson junction reveals an anomalous response: the supercurrent is nonzero even at zero phase difference between two superconductors. We consider details of this peculiar phenomenon in the planar double-barrier configurations of hybrid circuits, where the noncentrosymmetric normal region is described in terms of the paradigmatic Rashba model of spin-orbit coupling. We analyze this anomalous Josephson effect by means of both the Ginzburg-Landau formalism and the microscopic Green's functions approach in the clean limit. We study theoretically the large variations of the supercurrent through a normal dot that are induced by a small quasiparticle injection current from normal leads connected to the dot. We find that the supercurrent decomposes into a subgap contribution, which depends on the voltages applied to the normal leads, as well as a contribution with opposite sign from energies outside the gap, which is insensitive to the voltages. As the voltages gradually suppress the subgap contribution, a critical voltage exists above which the contribution from energies outside the gap dominates, leading to a sign reversal of the current-phase relation, namely a transition to a so-called $\pi$-junction behavior. We investigate the scattering of elastic waves off a disordered region described by a one-dimensional random-phase sine-Gordon model. The collective pinning results in an effective static disorder potential with universal and non-Gaussian correlations, acting on propagating waves. We find signatures of the correlations in the wave transmission in a wide frequency range, which covers both the weak and strong localization regimes. Our theory elucidates the dynamics of collectively-pinned phases occurring in any natural or synthetic elastic medium. The latter one is exemplified by a one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions, for which we specify our results. The obtained results provide benchmarks for the array-enabled quantum simulations addressing the dynamics in broader and yet-unexplored domains of individual pinning and quantum Bose glass., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

Spontaneous decay of a single photon is a notoriously inefficient process in nature irrespective of the frequency range. We report that a quantum phase-slip fluctuation in high-impedance superconducting waveguides can split a single incident microwave photon into a large number of lower-energy photons with a near unit probability. The underlying inelastic photon-photon interaction has no analogs in non-linear optics. Instead, the measured decay rates are explained without adjustable parameters in the framework of a new model of a quantum impurity in a Luttinger liquid. Our result connects circuit quantum electrodynamics to critical phenomena in two-dimensional boundary quantum field theories, important in the physics of strongly-correlated systems. We investigate the Josephson radiation emitted by a junction made of a quantum dot coupled to two conventional superconductors. Close to resonance, the particle-hole symmetric Andreev states that form in the junction are detached from the continuum above the superconducting gap in the leads, while a gap between them opens near the Fermi level. Under voltage bias, we formulate a stochastic model that accounts for non-adiabatic processes, which change the occupations of the Andreev states. This model allows calculating the current noise spectrum and determining the Fano factor. Analyzing the finite-frequency noise, we find that the model may exhibit either an integer or a fractional AC Josephson effect, depending on the bias voltage and the size of the gaps in the Andreev spectrum. We show that the annihilation dynamics of excess quasi-particles in superconductors may result in the spontaneous formation of large spin-polarized clusters. This presents a novel scenario for spontaneous spin polarization. We estimate the relevant scales for aluminum, finding the feasibility of clusters with total spin $S \simeq 10^4 \hbar$ that could be spread over microns. The Josephson current flowing in a junction between two superconductors is a striking manifestation of macroscopic quantum coherence, with applications in metrology and quantum information. This equilibrium current is related with the formation of Andreev states localized in the junction, whose energy depends periodically on the superconducting phase difference. Topology emerged as a guide for predicting exotic properties of Andreev states. In particular, topological superconductors host Majorana modes at their ends. Then, in a junction with such leads, the hybridization of two Majorana modes results in an Andreev state with a period-doubling of its energy-phase dependence. Furthermore, topologically protected crossings between Andreev states in junctions with more than two leads may be revealed through a quantized transconductance. The prediction motivated recent efforts to fabricate multi-terminal junctions. Here we combine both topological effects to predict a robust non-vanishing quantized transconductance in trijunctions with topological leads. Such devices are envisioned to reveal the anyonic nature of Majorana states through their braiding. Due to the ever increasing power and cooling requirements of large-scale computing and data facilities, there is a worldwide search for low-power alternatives to CMOS. One approach under consideration is superconducting computing based on single-flux-quantum logic. Unfortunately, there is not yet a low-power, high-density superconducting memory technology that is fully compatible with superconducting logic. We are working toward developing cryogenic memory based on Josephson junctions that contain two or more ferromagnetic (F) layers. Such junctions have been demonstrated to be programmable by changing the relative direction of the F layer magnetizations. There are at least two different types of such junctions -- those that carry the innate spin-singlet supercurrent associated with the conventional superconducting electrodes, and those that convert spin-singlet to spin-triplet supercurrent in the middle of the device. In this paper we compare the performance and requirements of the two kinds of junctions. Whereas the spin-singlet junctions need only two ferromagnetic layers to function, the spin-triplet junctions require at least three. In the devices demonstrated to date, the spin-singlet junctions have considerably larger critical current densities than the spin-triplet devices. On the other hand, the spin-triplet devices have less stringent constraints on the thicknesses of the F layers, which might be beneficial in large-scale manufacturing., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

A chain of small Josephson junctions (aka superinductor) emerged recently as a high-inductance, low-loss element of superconducting quantum devices. We notice that the intrinsic parameters of a typical superinductor in fact place it into the Bose glass universality class for which the propagation of waves in a sufficiently long chain is hindered by pinning. Its weakness provides for a broad crossover from the spectrum of well-resolved plasmon standing waves at high frequencies to the low-frequency excitation spectrum of a pinned charge density wave. We relate the scattering amplitude of microwave photons reflected off a superinductor to the dynamics of a Bose glass. The dynamics at long and short scales compared to the Larkin pinning length determines the low- and high-frequency asymptotes of the reflection amplitude., Comment: 6+8 pages, 2+3 figures

We analyze the Andreev spectrum in a four-terminal Josephson junction between one-dimensional topological superconductors in class D. We find that a topologically protected crossing in the space of three superconducting phase differences can occur between the two lowest Andreev bound states. This crossing can be detected through the transconductance quantization, in units of $2e^2/h$, between two voltage-biased terminals. Our prediction provides yet another example of topology in multi-terminal Josephson junctions. We consider the ground-state energy and the spectrum of the low-energy excitations of a Majorana island formed of topological superconductors connected by a single-mode junction of arbitrary transmission. Coulomb blockade results in $e$-periodic modulation of the energies with the gate-induced charge. We find the amplitude of modulation as a function of reflection coefficient ${\cal R}$. The amplitude scales as $\sqrt{\cal R}$ in the limit ${\cal R}\to 0$. At larger ${\cal R}$, the dependence of the amplitude on the Josephson and charging energies is similar to that of a conventional-superconductor Cooper-pair box. We calculate the interference correction to the conductivity of doped transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers. Because of the interplay between valley structure and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), these materials exhibit a rich weak localization (WL) behavior that is qualitatively different from conventional metals or similar two-dimensional materials such as graphene. Our results can also be used to describe graphene/TMDC heterostructures, where the SOC is induced in the graphene sheet. We discuss new parameter regimes that go beyond existing theories, and can be used to interpret recent experiments in order to assess the strength of SOC and disorder. Furthermore, we show that an in-plane Zeeman field can be used to distinguish the contributions of different kinds of SOC to the WL magnetoconductance., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

We compute the magneto-conductance of a short junction made out of a Weyl semi-metal. We show that it displays quantum oscillations at low magnetic field and low temperature, before reaching a universal high-field regime where it increases linearly with the field. Besides identifying a new characterization of the physics of materials with Weyl singularities in their energy spectrum, this ballistic regime corresponds to the simplest setup to study and understand the manifestation of the so-called chiral anomaly of massless relativistic particles in condensed matter. At low fields the algebraic in field magneto-conductance incorporates contributions besides the anomalous chiral current while the linear conductance at higher fields constitutes an unambiguous signature of the chiral anomaly in a Weyl conductor. Finally, we study the dependence of the ballistic magneto-conductance on the chemical potential, and discuss the cross-over towards the diffusive regime when elastic scattering is present.

Recently it has been predicted that the Andreev bound state spectrum of 4-terminal Josephson junctions may possess zero-energy Weyl singularities. Using one superconducting phase as a control parameter, these singularities are associated with topological transitions between time-reversal symmetry broken phases with different Chern numbers. Here we show that such topological transitions may also be tuned with a magnetic flux through the junction area in a 3-terminal geometry., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We calculate the effect of impurities on the superconducting phase diagram of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. Due to strong intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, the upper critical field greatly surpasses the Pauli limit at low temperatures. We find that it is insensitive to intravalley scattering and, ultimately, limited by intervalley scattering., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Recently we predicted that the Andreev bound state spectrum of 4-terminal Josephson junctions may possess topologically protected zero-energy Weyl singularities, which manifest themselves in a quantized transconductance in units of $4e^2/h$ when two of the terminals are voltage biased [R.-P. Riwar et al., Nature Commun. 7, 11167 (2016)]. Here, using the Landauer-B\"uttiker scattering theory, we compute numerically the currents flowing through such a structure in order to assess the conditions for observing this effect. We show that the voltage below which the transconductance becomes quantized is determined by the interplay of non-adiabatic transitions between Andreev bound states and inelastic relaxation processes. Experimentally and mysteriously, the concentration of quasiparticles in a gapped superconductor at low temperatures always by far exceeds its equilibrium value. We study the dynamics of localized quasiparticles in superconductors with a spatially fluctuating gap edge. We study Josephson junctions made of semiconducting nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, where superconducting correlations are induced by the proximity effect. In the presence of a suitably directed magnetic field, the system displays the anomalous Josephson effect: a nonzero supercurrent in the absence of a phase bias between two superconductors. We show that this anomalous current can be increased significantly by tuning the nanowire into the helical regime. We use the Landauer-B\"uttiker scattering theory for electronic transport to calculate the current cross-correlations in a voltage-biased three-terminal junction with all superconducting leads. At low bias voltage, when charge transport is due to coherent multiple Andreev reflections, we find large cross-correlations compared with their normal-state value. We study the density of states in disordered s-wave superconductors with a small gap anisotropy. Disorder comes in the form of common nonmagnetic scatterers and pairing-potential impurities, which interact with electrons via an electric potential and a local distortion of the superconducting gap. A set of equations for the quasiclassical Green functions is derived and solved. Within one spin sector, pairing-potential impurities and weak spin-polarized magnetic impurities have essentially the same effect on the density of states. We show that if the gap is isotropic, an isolated impurity with suppressed pairing supports an infinite number of Andreev states. With growing impurity concentration, the energy-dependent density of states evolves from a sharp gap edge with an impurity band below it to a smeared BCS singularity in the so-called universal limit. If a gap anisotropy is present, the density of states becomes sensitive to ordinary potential disorder, and the existence of of Andreev states localized at pairing-potential impurities requires special conditions. An unusual feature related to the anisotropy is a nonmonotonic dependence of the gap edge smearing on impurity concentration., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We study a singlet-triplet Josephson junction between a conventional s-wave superconductor and an unconventional p$_{\rm x}$-wave superconductor. The Andreev spectrum of the junction yields a spontaneous magnetization in equilibrium. This allows manipulating the occupation of the Andreev levels using an ac Zeeman field. The induced Rabi oscillations manifest themselves as a resonance in the current-phase relation. For a circularly polarized magnetic field, we find a spin selection rule, yielding Rabi oscillations only in a certain interval of the superconducting phase difference., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

A local interaction between photons can be engineered by coupling a nonlinear system to a transmission line. The required high impedance transmission line can be conveniently formed from a chain of Josephson junctions. The nonlinearity is generated by side-coupling this chain to a Cooper pair box. We propose to probe the resulting photon-photon interactions via their effect on the current-voltage characteristic of a voltage-biased Josephson junction connected to the transmission line. Considering the Cooper pair box to be in the weakly anharmonic regime, we find that the dc current through the probe junction yields features around the voltages $2eV=n\hbar\omega_s$, where $\omega_s$ is the plasma frequency of the superconducting circuit. Contacting a bilayer ferromagnet with a singlet even-frequency superconductor allows for the realization of an effective triplet odd-frequency superconductor. In this work, we investigate the Josephson effect between superconductors with different symmetries (e.g. odd- versus even-frequency). In particular, we study the supercurrent flowing between two triplet odd-frequency superconducting leads through a weak singlet even-frequency superconductor. We show that the peculiar temperature dependence of the critical current below the superconducting transition of the weak superconductor is a signature of the competition between odd/odd-frequency and odd/even-frequency Josephson couplings., Comment: 8 pages, 6+1 Figures

Topological materials and their unusual transport properties are now at the focus of modern experimental and theoretical research. Their topological properties arise from the bandstructure determined by the atomic composition of a material and as such are difficult to tune and naturally restricted to $\leq3$ dimensions. Here we demonstrate that $n$-terminal Josephson junctions with conventional superconductors may provide a straightforward realization of tunable topological materials in $n-1$ dimensions. For $n\geq 4$, the Andreev subgap spectrum of the junction can accommodate Weyl singularities in the space of the $n-1$ independent superconducting phases, which play the role of bandstructure quasimomenta. The presence of these Weyl singularities enables topological transitions that are manifested experimentally as changes of the quantized transconductance between two voltage-biased leads, the quantization unit being $2e^2/(\pi\hbar)$.

We study the effect of a magnetic field on the current-phase relation of a topological Josephson junction formed by connecting two superconductors through the helical edge states of a quantum spin-Hall insulator. We predict that the Zeeman effect along the spin quantization axis of the helical edges results in an anomalous Josephson relation that allows for a supercurrent to flow in the absence of superconducting phase bias. We relate the associated field-tunable phase shift $\phi_0$ in the Josephson relation of such a $\phi_0$-junction to the existence of a so-called helical superconductivity, which may result from the interplay of the Zeeman effect and spin-orbit coupling. We derive the quasiclassical equations that describe two-dimensional superconductors with a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling and in the presence of impurities. These equations account for the helical phase induced by an in-plane magnetic field, with a superconducting order parameter that is spatially modulated along a direction perpendicular to the field. We also derive the generalized Ginzburg-Landau functional, which includes a linear-in-gradient term corresponding to the helical phase. We investigate theoretically the non-local conductance through a superconducting wire in tunnel contact with normal and ferromagnetic leads. In the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, the superconducting density of states is spin-split, and the current injected from the normal lead is spin-polarized. A non-local conductance that is antisymmetric with the applied voltage can be measured with a ferromagnetic lead. It persists for a distance between the contacts that is larger than both the charge-imbalance relaxation length and the normal-state spin relaxation length. We determine its amplitude by considering two extreme models of weak and strong internal equilibration of the superconducting quasiparticles due to electron-electron interactions. We find that the non-local signal, which was measured in recent experiments and discussed as a spin-imbalance effect, can be interpreted alternatively as the signature of a thermoelectric effect., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We study a short superconducting junction subject to a dc and ac phase bias. The ac modulation changes the occupation of the Andreev bound states formed at the constriction by transitions between bound states and the continuum. In a short junction, the non-equilibrium Andreev bound state population may relax through processes that conserve parity of the occupation number on the same bound state and processes that do not conserve it. We argue that the parity conserving processes occur on a much faster time scale. In this case, even a weak driving may lead to a large deviation of the supercurrent from its equilibrium value. We show that this effect is accompanied by a quasiparticle current which may lead to a measurable charge imbalance in the vicinity of the junction. Furthermore, we study the time evolution of the supercurrent after switching off the ac drive. On a time scale where parity relaxation is negligible, the supercurrent relaxes to a stationary non-equilibrium state. Motivated by recent experimental research, we study the processes in an ac driven superconducting constriction whereby one quasiparticle is promoted to the delocalized states outside the superconducting gap. We demonstrate that with these processes one can control the population of the Andreev bound states in the constriction. We stress an interesting charge asymmetry of these processes that may produce a charge imbalance of accumulated quasiparticles, which depends on the phase.

Topological superconductors admit zero-energy Majorana bound states at their boundaries. In this review article, we discuss how to probe these Majorana bound states in Josephson junctions between two topological superconductors. In the absence of an applied bias, the presence of these states gives rise to an Andreev bound state whose energy varies $4\pi$-periodically in the superconducting phase difference. An applied voltage bias leads to a dynamically varying phase according to the Josephson relation. Furthermore, it leads to dynamics of the occupation of the bound state via its non-adiabatic coupling to the continuum. While the Josephson relation suggests a fractional Josephson effect due to the $4\pi$-periodicity of the bound state, its observability relies on the conservation of the occupation of the bound state on the experimentally probed time scale. We study the lifetime of the bound state and identify the time scales it has to be compared to. In particular, we are interested in signatures of the fractional Josephson effect in the Shapiro steps and in current noise measurements. This paper discusses the technical aspects - mathematical and numerical - associated with the numerical simulations of a mesoscopic system in the time domain (i.e. beyond the single frequency AC limit). After a short review of the state of the art, we develop a theoretical framework for the calculation of time resolved observables in a general multiterminal system subject to an arbitrary time dependent perturbation (oscillating electrostatic gates, voltage pulses, time-vaying magnetic fields) The approach is mathematically equivalent to (i) the time dependent scattering formalism, (ii) the time resolved Non Equilibrium Green Function (NEGF) formalism and (iii) the partition-free approach. The central object of our theory is a wave function that obeys a simple Schrodinger equation with an additional source term that accounts for the electrons injected from the electrodes. The time resolved observables (current, density. . .) and the (inelastic) scattering matrix are simply expressed in term of this wave function. We use our approach to develop a numerical technique for simulating time resolved quantum transport. We find that the use of this wave function is advantageous for numerical simulations resulting in a speed up of many orders of magnitude with respect to the direct integration of NEGF equations. Nonlocal charge correlations induced in two normal metals contacted separately to a supercon- ductor have been studied intensively in the past few years. Here we investigate nonlocal correlations induced by the transfer of pure spin currents through a superconductor on a scale comparable to the superconducting coherence length. As with charge currents, two processes contribute to the nonlocal spin signal: crossed Andreev reflection (CAR), where an electron with spin up injected from one normal metal into the superconductor results in a hole with spin down being injected into the second normal metal, and elastic cotunneling (EC), where the electron with spin up injected from the first normal metal results in an electron with spin up being injected into the second normal metal. Unlike charge currents, however, the spin currents associated with CAR and EC add due to the fact that the bulk superconductor cannot sustain a net spin current., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Topological Josephson junctions carry 4pi-periodic bound states. A finite bias applied to the junction limits the lifetime of the bound state by dynamically coupling it to the continuum. Another characteristic time scale, the phase adjustment time, is determined by the resistance of the circuit "seen" by the junction. We show that the 4pi periodicity manifests itself by an even-odd effect in Shapiro steps only if the phase adjustment time is shorter than the lifetime of the bound state. The presence of a peak in the current noise spectrum at half the Josephson frequency is a more robust manifestation of the 4pi periodicity, as it persists for an arbitrarily long phase adjustment time. The hybrid combination of superconductors and low-dimensional semiconductors offers a versatile ground for novel device concepts, such as sources of spin-entangled electrons, nanoscale superconducting magnetometers, or recently proposed qubits based on topologically protected Majorana fermions. The underlying physics behind such hybrid devices ultimately rely on the magnetic properties of sub-gap excitations, known as Andreev levels. Here we report the Zeeman effect on the Andreev levels of a semiconductor nanowire quantum dot (QD) strongly coupled to a conventional superconductor. The combination of the large QD g-factor with the large superconductor critical magnetic field allows spin degeneracy to be lifted without suppressing superconductivity. We show that a Zeeman-split Andreev level crossing the Fermi energy signals a quantum phase transition in the ground state of the superconductivity-induced QD, denoting a change in the fermionic parity of the system. This transition manifests itself as a zero-bias conductance anomaly appearing at a finite magnetic field, with properties that resemble those expected for Majorana fermions in a topological superconductor. Although the herein reported zero-bias anomalies do not hold any relation with topological superconductivity, the observed parity transitions can be regarded as precursors of Majorana modes in the long-wire limit., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Quantum fluctuations in an anharmonic superconducting circuit enable frequency conversion of individual incoming photons. This effect, linear in the photon beam intensity, leads to ramifications for the standard input-output circuit theory. We consider an extreme case of anharmonicity in which photons scatter off a small set of weak links within a Josephson junction array. We show that this quantum impurity displays Kondo physics and evaluate the elastic and inelastic photon scattering cross sections. We study charge transport through a metallic dot coupled to a superconducting and a ferromagnetic lead with a precessing magnetization due to ferromagnetic resonance. Using the quasiclassical theory, we find that the magnetization precession induces a dc current in the subgap regime even in the absence of a bias voltage. This effect is due to the rectification of the ac spin currents at the interface with the ferromagnet; it exists in the absence of spin current in the superconductor. When the dot is strongly coupled to the superconductor, we find a strong enhancement in a wide range of parameters as compared to the induced current in the normal state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the electronic transport through a suspended carbon-nanotube quantum dot. In the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the nanotube and a nearby metallic gate, two forces act on the electrons: the Laplace and the electrostatic force. They both induce coupling between the electrons and the mechanical transverse oscillation modes. We find that the difference between the two mechanisms appears in the cotunneling current.
