The micro:bit is a small programmable and embeddable computer designed, developed, and deployed by the BBC and 29 project partners to approximately 800,000 UK Year 7 (11/12 year old) school children in 2015-2016. The micro:bit has been described by the BBC as "its most ambitious education initiative in 30 years, with an ambition to inspire digital creativity and develop a new generation of tech pioneers". This article describes the design of the BBC micro:bit, the realization of its goals through examples of the diverse projects crested with the micro:bit, reviews the project's history as it transitioned from a UK-centric to a worldwide project, and concludes with lessons learned and project outcomes.

Cardiologists at Wrexham Maelor Hospital drew to our attention the fact that amiodarone may not be used appropriately in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Though the All Wales Medicine Strategy Group had developed shared care guidelines in 2007, there was anecdotal evidence that these were not well known, and that patients and their carers were ill informed about the need for monitoring for adverse effects. All 251 patients were reviewed by Wrexham primary care practices, with the assistance of the prescribing support team and in partnership with the consultants. The review of amiodarone prescribing revealed that the drug was no longer indicated in 50 % of patients who were taking it and a subsequent audit of 50 % of patients in primary care practices revealed that monitoring guidelines were not being followed. Consequently, working in partnership with secondary care services, we devised a template for good practice that included a patient information leaflet, a virtual clinic, educational talks and an educational campaign to raise awareness of the existence and content of the shared care guidelines.

Professionals are often faced with ill-structured and complex decision situations, and they must make choices on the basis of limited information and problem clarity. These decisions are especially difficult when extensive document search is required. Thus, decision makers often satisfice rather than select an optimal alternative. The research reported here applies a cascading index, logical views, hypertext, notation capability, and case-based reasoning to a conceptual design and the prototyping of an electronic retrieval document system (ERDS) that may serve as a valuable tool for decision makers faced with an ill-structured problem and the task of extensive searching. The ERDS prototype was applied to the problem domain of public accounting professional conduct. It was developed using a portion of the AICPA Professional Standards , which served as the electronic document text. The text was linked by hypertext to real and prototypical cases. A panel of industry experts validated the prototype. The results of analysis and evaluation produced ideas for the extension and wider application of the system.

A method is presented for performing partial summations in multi-reference perturbation theory that is stable in the presence of intruder states. The method is invariant under translation and thus can be used to evaluate the folded terms as well. Several numerical examples are presented which demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

The effective one- and two-electron π hamiltonians for ethylene are constructed using the quasi-degenerate Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation method of Brandow [1, 2]. From these calculations the usual semi-empirical parameters α, β, γ00 and γ01 are obtained as well as the excitation energies and ionization potential. Acceptable numerical results are obtained only when diffuse orbitals are added to the basis and the π orbitals are optimized using multi-configuration SCF (MC-SCF) methods. It is demonstrated that correlation has only a small effect on the excitation energies and that the major contribution of electron correlation is to scale the atomic parameters and thus effectively reduce the diffuseness of the π orbitals. These scaled parameters are still consistent with empirical recipes for evaluation from atomic data.

A formulation of multi-reference linear coupled cluster theory (MR-LCC) within the context of the Unitary Group Approach (UGA) is presented. This size consistent unitary group method has been organized in a manner which is well suited to vector computers. Some examples are presented which illustrate the applicability of the method to potential surface calculations.

An area 1360 km 2 in extent on the eastern side of the South Kenya rift valley consists of block faulted Plio-Pleistocene flood lavas ranging from basalts to trachytes. The oldest flood lavas are the Limuru trachytes (1.91 Ma BP) which were followed by the Ol Keju Nero basalts. A second eruptive cycle began with the Ol Tepesi basalts (1.42–1.65 Ma), which contain a very thick porphyritic benmoreite flow, and were followed by the Plateau trachytes (0.8–1.25 Ma). The magnetic polarities of the lavas agree with new K–Ar dates, and allow a revised and expanded stratigraphic succession to be established. The tectonic evolution of the eastern margin of the South Kenya rift valley followed pre-rift eruption of peralkaline lavas from shield volcanoes (13.4–3.3 Ma), and consisted of formation of the eastern boundary fault (3.3–2.3 Ma), formation of an inner graben (1.9–1.65 Ma), succeeded by almost continuous block fault movements (0.8–0.4 Ma). It is postulated that two major basalt-trachyte eruptive cycles occurred during late Pleistocene evolution of the southern rift valley, and that the voluminous flood trachytes could have been formed by fractional crystallization from a large basic intrusive body emplaced under the axial zone of the rift.

Remnants of three cyclic erosion-bevels (the end-Cretaceous, sub-Miocene, and end-Tertiary) of eastern Kenya are described. The nature and magnitude of the crustal movements—epeirogenic uplift, inland upwarping, and coastal down-flexing—that terminated the erosion-cycles are estimated and are related to contemporaneous warping and faulting in the Gregory Rift Valley and in the southern coastal zone; they are also related to coastal sedimentation and other geological events. An estimate is made of the sedimentary contents of the lower Tana basin, a coastal downwarped area.

The San Jose scale, Aspidiotus perniciosus Comst., and occasionally the Oyster Shell scale, Lepidosaphes ulmi L., are serious pests in many fruit growing districts. Parasites often play an important role in reducing these scales. In order to determine what species of parasites were present, samples of infested twigs were collected from several regions and the following species of parasites were bred: From San Jose scale— Prospaltella perniciosi Tow., A phelinus fuscipennis How., Aphelinus mytilaspidis LeB., Signiphora pulchra Gir., Perissopterus sp., and Ablerus clisiocampae Ashm.; from Oyster Shell scale— Aphelinus mytillspidis LeB.
