The rapid advancement of robotics necessitates robust tools for developing and testing safe control architectures in dynamic and uncertain environments. Ensuring safety and reliability in robotics, especially in safety-critical applications, is crucial, driving substantial industrial and academic efforts. In this context, we extend CBFkit, a Python/ROS2 toolbox, which now incorporates a planner using reach-avoid specifications as a cost function. This integration with the Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) controllers enables the toolbox to satisfy complex tasks while ensuring formal safety guarantees under various sources of uncertainty using Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). CBFkit is optimized for speed using JAX for automatic differentiation and jaxopt for quadratic program solving. The toolbox supports various robotic applications, including autonomous navigation, human-robot interaction, and multi-robot coordination. The toolbox also offers a comprehensive library of planner, controller, sensor, and estimator implementations. Through a series of examples, we demonstrate the enhanced capabilities of CBFkit in different robotic scenarios.

Deep metric learning (DML) has shown to be effective for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in remote sensing (RS). Most of DML methods for CBIR rely on a high number of annotated images to accurately learn model parameters of deep neural networks (DNNs). However, gathering such data is time-consuming and costly. To address this, we propose an annotation cost-efficient active learning (ANNEAL) method tailored to DML-driven CBIR in RS. ANNEAL aims to create a small but informative training set made up of similar and dissimilar image pairs to be utilized for accurately learning a metric space. The informativeness of image pairs is evaluated by combining uncertainty and diversity criteria. To assess the uncertainty of image pairs, we introduce two algorithms: 1) metric-guided uncertainty estimation (MGUE); and 2) binary classifier guided uncertainty estimation (BCGUE). MGUE algorithm automatically estimates a threshold value that acts as a boundary between similar and dissimilar image pairs based on the distances in the metric space. The closer the similarity between image pairs is to the estimated threshold value the higher their uncertainty. BCGUE algorithm estimates the uncertainty of the image pairs based on the confidence of the classifier in assigning correct similarity labels. The diversity criterion is assessed through a clustering-based strategy. ANNEAL combines either MGUE or BCGUE algorithm with the clustering-based strategy to select the most informative image pairs, which are then labelled by expert annotators as similar or dissimilar. This way of annotating images significantly reduces the annotation cost compared to annotating images with land-use land-cover class labels. Experimental results on two RS benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. How do consultants price expertise? This paper studies a problem of selling information products (expertise) to a buyer (client) who faces decision-making problem under uncertainty. The client is privately informed about the type of expertise she needs and her willingness to pay (WTP) for additional information. A monopolist seller (consultant) designs and sells information products as Blackwell experiments over the underlying states associated with each client-specific desired expertise. Because there is correlation across states, a client with high WTP may find it profitable to purchase information about a low type's state, whenever correlation is sufficiently high. I find that the consultant can extract full (socially efficient) surplus whenever such (marginal) gains do not exceed the (marginal) costs of buying cheaper, but noisier information. Otherwise, unlike typical results in mechanism design, I find that buyers with low and sufficiently high value for information get no information rents, and only the "middle" types enjoy positive surplus. Common pricing structures observed in practice, like flat/hourly rates or value-based fees, are obtained as optimal contracts if correlation across states is sufficiently high or low, respectively.

This paper introduces CBFKit, a Python/ROS toolbox for safe robotics planning and control under uncertainty. The toolbox provides a general framework for designing control barrier functions for mobility systems within both deterministic and stochastic environments. It can be connected to the ROS open-source robotics middleware, allowing for the setup of multi-robot applications, encoding of environments and maps, and integrations with predictive motion planning algorithms. Additionally, it offers multiple CBF variations and algorithms for robot control. This paper addresses the problem of risk-aware fixed-time stabilization of a class of uncertain, output-feedback nonlinear systems modeled via stochastic differential equations. First, novel classes of certificate functions, namely risk-aware fixed-time- and risk-aware path-integral-control Lyapunov functions, are introduced. Then, it is shown how the use of either for control design certifies that a system is both stable in probability and probabilistically fixed-time convergent (for a given probability) to a goal set. That is, the system trajectories probabilistically reach the set within a finite time, independent of the initial condition, despite the additional presence of measurement noise. These methods represent an improvement over the state-of-the-art in stochastic fixed-time stabilization, which presently offers bounds on the settling-time function in expectation only. The theoretical results are verified by an empirical study on an illustrative, stochastic, nonlinear system and the proposed controllers are evaluated against an existing method. This paper introduces a model-based approach for training feedback controllers for an autonomous agent operating in a highly nonlinear (albeit deterministic) environment. We desire the trained policy to ensure that the agent satisfies specific task objectives and safety constraints, both expressed in Discrete-Time Signal Temporal Logic (DT-STL). One advantage for reformulation of a task via formal frameworks, like DT-STL, is that it permits quantitative satisfaction semantics. In other words, given a trajectory and a DT-STL formula, we can compute the {\em robustness}, which can be interpreted as an approximate signed distance between the trajectory and the set of trajectories satisfying the formula. We utilize feedback control, and we assume a feed forward neural network for learning the feedback controller. We show how this learning problem is similar to training recurrent neural networks (RNNs), where the number of recurrent units is proportional to the temporal horizon of the agent's task objectives. This poses a challenge: RNNs are susceptible to vanishing and exploding gradients, and na\"{i}ve gradient descent-based strategies to solve long-horizon task objectives thus suffer from the same problems. To tackle this challenge, we introduce a novel gradient approximation algorithm based on the idea of dropout or gradient sampling. One of the main contributions is the notion of {\em controller network dropout}, where we approximate the NN controller in several time-steps in the task horizon by the control input obtained using the controller in a previous training step. We show that our control synthesis methodology, can be quite helpful for stochastic gradient descent to converge with less numerical issues, enabling scalable backpropagation over long time horizons and trajectories over high dimensional state spaces.

Multi-Robot Task Allocation (MRTA) is a problem that arises in many application domains including package delivery, warehouse robotics, and healthcare. In this work, we consider the problem of MRTA for a dynamic stream of tasks with task deadlines and capacitated agents (capacity for more than one simultaneous task). Previous work commonly focuses on the static case, uses specialized algorithms for restrictive task specifications, or lacks guarantees. We propose an approach to Dynamic MRTA for capacitated robots that is based on Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solving and addresses these concerns. We show our approach is both sound and complete, and that the SMT encoding is general, enabling extension to a broader class of task specifications. We show how to leverage the incremental solving capabilities of SMT solvers, keeping learned information when allocating new tasks arriving online, and to solve non-incrementally, which we provide runtime comparisons of. Additionally, we provide an algorithm to start with a smaller but potentially incomplete encoding that can iteratively be adjusted to the complete encoding. We evaluate our method on a parameterized set of benchmarks encoding multi-robot delivery created from a graph abstraction of a hospital-like environment. This paper addresses the challenge of planning a sequence of tasks to be performed by multiple robots while minimizing the overall completion time subject to timing and precedence constraints. Our approach uses the Timed Partial Orders (TPO) model to specify these constraints. We translate this problem into a Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) variant with timing and precedent constraints, and we solve it as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. Our contributions include a general planning framework for TPO specifications, a MILP formulation accommodating time windows and precedent constraints, its extension to multi-robot scenarios, and a method to quantify plan robustness. We demonstrate our framework on several case studies, including an aircraft turnaround task involving three Jackal robots, highlighting the approach's potential applicability to important real-world problems. Quadratic programs (QP) subject to multiple time-dependent control barrier function (CBF) based constraints have been used to design safety-critical controllers. However, ensuring the existence of a solution at all times to the QP subject to multiple CBF constraints is non-trivial. We quantify the feasible solution space of the QP in terms of its volume. We introduce a novel feasible space volume monitoring control barrier function that promotes compatibility of barrier functions and, hence, existence of a solution at all times. We show empirically that our approach not only enhances feasibility but also exhibits reduced sensitivity to changes in the hyperparameters such as gains of nominal controller. Finally, paired with a global planner, we evaluate our controller for navigation among humans in the AWS Hospital gazebo environment. The proposed controller is demonstrated to outperform the standard CBF-QP controller in maintaining feasibility.

Control Barrier Functions (CBF) have provided a very versatile framework for the synthesis of safe control architectures for a wide class of nonlinear dynamical systems. Typically, CBF-based synthesis approaches apply to systems that exhibit nonlinear -- but smooth -- relationship in the state of the system and linear relationship in the control input. In contrast, the problem of safe control synthesis using CBF for hybrid dynamical systems, i.e., systems which have a discontinuous relationship in the system state, remains largely unexplored. In this work, we build upon the progress on CBF-based control to formulate a theory for safe control synthesis for hybrid dynamical systems. Under the assumption that local CBFs can be synthesized for each mode of operation of the hybrid system, we show how to construct CBF that can guarantee safe switching between modes. The end result is a switching CBF-based controller which provides global safety guarantees. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated on two simulation studies.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) designed in simulators behave differently in the real-world. Once they are deployed in the real-world, we would hence like to predict system failures during runtime. We propose robust predictive runtime verification (RPRV) algorithms under signal temporal logic (STL) tasks for general stochastic CPS. The RPRV problem faces several challenges: (1) there may not be sufficient data of the behavior of the deployed CPS, (2) predictive models are based on a distribution over system trajectories encountered during the design phase, i.e., there may be a distribution shift during deployment. To address these challenges, we assume to know an upper bound on the statistical distance (in terms of an f-divergence) between the distributions at deployment and design time, and we utilize techniques based on robust conformal prediction. Motivated by our results in [1], we construct an accurate and an interpretable RPRV algorithm. We use a trajectory prediction model to estimate the system behavior at runtime and robust conformal prediction to obtain probabilistic guarantees by accounting for distribution shifts. We precisely quantify the relationship between calibration data, desired confidence, and permissible distribution shift. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first statistically valid algorithms under distribution shift in this setting. We empirically validate our algorithms on a Franka manipulator within the NVIDIA Isaac sim environment.

Technology has advanced dramatically in the previous several years. There are also cyber assaults. Cyberattacks pose a possible danger to information security and the general public. Since data practice and internet consumption rates continue to upswing, cyber awareness has become progressively important. Furthermore, as businesses pace their digital transformation with mobile devices, cloud services, communal media, and Internet of Things services, cybersecurity has appeared as a critical issue in corporate risk management. This research focuses on the relations between cybersecurity awareness, cyber knowledge, computer ethics, cyber ethics, and cyber behavior, as well as protective tools, across university students in general. The findings express that while internet users are alert of cyber threats, they only take the most elementary and easy-to-implement precautions. Several knowledge and awareness have been proposed to knob the issue of cyber security. It also grants the principles of cybersecurity in terms of its structure, workforces, and evidence pertaining to the shield of personal information in the cyber world. The first step is for people to educate themselves about the negative aspects of the internet and to learn more about cyber threats so that they can notice when an attack is taking place. Deep metric learning (DML) based methods have been found very effective for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in remote sensing (RS). For accurately learning the model parameters of deep neural networks, most of the DML methods require a high number of annotated training images, which can be costly to gather. To address this problem, in this paper we present an annotation cost efficient active learning (AL) method (denoted as ANNEAL). The proposed method aims to iteratively enrich the training set by annotating the most informative image pairs as similar or dissimilar, while accurately modelling a deep metric space. This is achieved by two consecutive steps. In the first step the pairwise image similarity is modelled based on the available training set. Then, in the second step the most uncertain and diverse (i.e., informative) image pairs are selected to be annotated. Unlike the existing AL methods for CBIR, at each AL iteration of ANNEAL a human expert is asked to annotate the most informative image pairs as similar/dissimilar. This significantly reduces the annotation cost compared to annotating images with land-use/land cover class labels. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our method. We propose a novel class of risk-aware control barrier functions (RA-CBFs) for the control of stochastic safety-critical systems. Leveraging a result from the stochastic level-crossing literature, we deviate from the martingale theory that is currently used in stochastic CBF techniques and prove that a RA-CBF based control synthesis confers a tighter upper bound on the probability of the system becoming unsafe within a finite time interval than existing approaches.
