- Abstract
Objective: evaluate empathy and its dimensions in two different annual periods and determine the strengths and weaknesses observed in empathy and its dimensions. Material and methods: non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The population was made up of Colombian dental students. The sample consisted of two cohorts: n=326 students, 100% of the population (cohort 2016) and n=207 students, 87.34% of the population (cohort 2022). Empathy was measured by the JES-HPS instrument. A confirmatory factor analysis, reliability and invariance was applied. Comparisons of empathy between cohorts were performed by factorial analysis of variance. Results. the three-dimensional theoretical model was met in both cohorts studied. Reliability levels were acceptable. No relevant statistical differences were found between the cohorts and a decline is observed in the second and fifth grades of empathy and dimensions in general. Conclusions. the values of empathy and its dimensions have remained unchanged over time and empathy is classified as “medium level.” As a consequence of the above, medium levels of empathy could be associated with a deficit in the ability to understand the subjectivity of thought. of the patient and, this situation, complicates a normal empathic attitude., Objetivo. evaluar la evolución de la empatía y sus dimensiones en dos períodos anuales diferentes y determinar las fortalezas y las deficiencias observadas en la empatía y en sus dimensiones. Material y Métodos. estudio no experimental, descriptivo y transversal.

Objective: to determine the knowledge, beliefs and practices about fluoride in parents and teachers of schoolchildren. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in parents and teachers of different schools in the city of Cartagena, who accepted their admission through informed consent, data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire, which consisted of twenty-four items, survey was applied by Mattos et al., the data were processed and these were reported in frequency and percentage distribution tables for the univariate analysis and Chi-square test for the bivariate analysis. Results: the knowledge about fluoride in both study groups was focused on its function and application, as well as it uses and benefits of fluoride toothpastes. However, the participants presented ignorance about fluoride supplements, as well as fluoride overdose and dental fluorosis in parents. In the item, “the use of fluoride toothpastes should begin since the child is born” was reported by teachers in (35.7%) while parents consider it when all temporary teeth come out (29.9%). Finally, participants report using Colgate® toothpaste, twice a day with an amount, corresponding to the entire toothbrush head. Conclusion: despite the diverse knowledge, attitudes and behaviors, that participants have, it is necessary to strengthen some aspects through educational interventions to improve new knowledge and practices in oral health.

- Abstract
Introduction: access to dental services in rural and remote areas is a problem still to be solved; for this purpose, a new alternative known as teledentistry has emerged. Through the application of information and communications technologies (ICTs), teledentistry promotes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This study aimed to determine the impact of teledentistry applications on clinical practice in different specialties based on the current evidence in the literature. Methods: two reviewers conducted a literature search in PubMed, EMBASE, EBSCO, ScienceDirect and LILACS databases until August 2019, to identify studies published in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Studies containing interventions applied to teledentistry, published in the last six years and available in full text were included. Bias risk was assessed through validated criteria according to each study type. Results: the search strategy retrieved 1028 articles, 24 of which were selected for evaluation. Twenty-three articles were cross-sectional studies and only one study was quasi-experimental. Seventeen studies (70.8%) considered teledentistry as an alternative to diagnosing and treating oral diseases in rural areas and health centers through mobile devices and clinical photographs. Most studies had moderate to high bias risk. Conclusion: while there is evidence on the use of teledentistry in the various fields of dentistry, it is important to keep in mind that since this is a novel tool that seeks to support access to health services in remote areas, the obtained results are preliminary, and further research with quality publications is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of this tool. Introduction. Over time, efforts have been invested in the design of new instruments that overcome the disadvantages of the gold standard instrument in surgery, the scalpel. As a result, electronic equipment has emerged such as the electric scalpel and laser devices. The available evidence on these instruments suggests that the tissue response is related to each instrument’s physical and biological cutting principles. Objective. To compare the histological changes in gingiva samples associated with surgical cutting performed with a 940 nm diode laser, a 2780 nm erbium, chromium: yttriumscandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser, and an electric scalpel, by presenting a series of cases. Case presentation. We present three cases of healthy patients undergoing cosmetic surgery. The clinical examination revealed exposure of a keratinized gingiva band greater than 4 mm, normal color and texture in gingival tissue, with a firm consistency and no bleeding on periodontal probing. Gingivectomy was indicated with the following protocols: Diode laser of 940 nm at 1 W, in continuous mode; Er,Cr:YSGG laser of 2780 nm at 2.5 W, 75 Hz, H mode, air 20, water 40, gold tip MT4); and electric scalpel in cutting mode at power level four. Gingival tissue samples were taken and stored in 10% formaldehyde for histological analysis. Conclusion. All the evaluated cutting instruments generated histological changes produced by the thermal effect, the main ones being collagen coagulation and carbonization. The depth of thermal damage caused by the 2780 nm Er,Cr:YSGG laser was much lesser than that induced by the electric scalpel and the 940 nm diode laser.
