We present 230 GHz continuum polarization observations with the Atacama Large Milimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at a resolution of 0$\farcs1$ ($\sim 540$~au) in the high-mass star-forming regions W51 e2 and e8. These observations resolve a network of core-connecting dust lanes, marking a departure from earlier coarser more spherical continuum structures. At the same time, the cores do not appear to fragment further. Polarized dust emission is clearly detected. The inferred magnetic field orientations are prevailingly parallel to dust lanes. This key structural feature is analyzed together with the local gravitational vector field. The direction of local gravity is found to typically align with dust lanes. With these findings we derive a stability criterion that defines a maximum magnetic field strength that can be overcome by an observed magnetic field-gravity configuration. Equivalently, this defines a minimum field strength that can stabilize dust lanes against a radial collapse. We find that the detected dust lanes in W51 e2 and e8 are stable, hence possibly making them a fundamental component in the accretion onto central sources, providing support for massive star formation models without the need of large accretion disks. When comparing to coarser resolutions, covering the scales of envelope, global, and local collapse, we find recurring similarities in the magnetic field structures and their corresponding gravitational vector fields. These self-similar structures point at a multi-scale collapse-within-collapse scenario until finally the scale of core-accreting dust lanes is reached where gravity is entraining the magnetic field and aligning it with the dust lanes., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Utilizing the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we present CS line maps in five rotational lines ($J_{\rm u}=7, 5, 4, 3, 2$) toward the circumnuclear disk (CND) and streamers of the Galactic Center. Our primary goal is to resolve the compact structures within the CND and the streamers, in order to understand the stability conditions of molecular cores in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) Sgr A*. Our data provide the first homogeneous high-resolution ($1.3'' = 0.05$ pc) observations aiming at resolving density and temperature structures. The CS clouds have sizes of $0.05-0.2$ pc with a broad range of velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm FWHM}=5-40$ km s$^{-1}$). The CS clouds are a mixture of warm ($T_{\rm k}\ge 50-500$ K, n$_{\rm H_2}$=$10^{3-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) and cold gas ($T_{\rm k}\le 50$ K, n$_{\rm H_2}$=$10^{6-8}$ cm$^{-3}$). A stability analysis based on the unmagnetized virial theorem including tidal force shows that $84^{+16}_{-37}$ % of the total gas mass is tidally stable, which accounts for the majority of gas mass. Turbulence dominates the internal energy and thereby sets the threshold densities $10-100$ times higher than the tidal limit at distance $\ge 1.5$ pc to Sgr A*, and therefore, inhibits the clouds from collapsing to form stars near the SMBH. However, within the central $1.5$ pc, the tidal force overrides turbulence and the threshold densities for a gravitational collapse quickly grow to $\ge 10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The ALMaQUEST (ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation) survey is a program with spatially-resolved $^{12}$CO(1-0) measurements obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) for 46 galaxies selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) DR15 optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The aim of the ALMaQUEST survey is to investigate the dependence of star formation activity on the cold molecular gas content at kpc scales in nearby galaxies. The sample consists of galaxies spanning a wide range in specific star formation rate (sSFR), including starburst (SB), main-sequence (MS), and green valley (GV) galaxies. In this paper, we present the sample selection and characteristics of the ALMA observations, and showcase some of the key results enabled by the combination of spatially-matched stellar populations and gas measurements. Considering the global (aperture-matched) stellar mass, molecular gas mass, and star formation rate of the sample, we find that the sSFR depends on both the star formation efficiency (SFE) and the molecular gas fraction ($f_{\rm H_{2}}$), although the correlation with the latter is slightly weaker. Furthermore, the dependence of sSFR on the molecular gas content (SFE or $f_{\rm H_{2}}$) is stronger than that on either the atomic gas fraction or the molecular-to-atomic gas fraction, albeit with the small HI sample size. On kpc scales, the variations in both SFE and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$ within individual galaxies can be as large as 1-2 dex thereby demonstrating that the availability of spatially-resolved observations is essential to understand the details of both star formation and quenching processes., Comment: 20 pages. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) emission lines around the type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) of NGC 7469 ($z = 0.0164$) at $\sim 100$ pc resolutions. The CO lines are bright both in the circumnuclear disk (central $\sim 300$ pc) and the surrounding starburst (SB) ring ($\sim 1$ kpc diameter), with two bright peaks on either side of the AGN. By contrast, the [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) line is strongly peaked on the AGN. Consequently, the brightness temperature ratio of [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) to $^{13}$CO(2-1) is $\sim 20$ at the AGN, as compared to $\sim 2$ in the SB ring. Our local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE models indicate that the enhanced line ratios (or CI enhancement) are due to an elevated C$^0$/CO abundance ratio ($\sim 3-10$) and temperature ($\sim 100-500$ K) around the AGN as compared to the SB ring (abundance ratio $\sim 1$, temperature $\lesssim 100$ K), which accords with the picture of the X-ray-dominated Region (XDR). Based on dynamical modelings, we also provide CO(1-0)-to- and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$)-to-molecular mass conversion factors at the central $\sim 100$ pc of this AGN as $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 4.1$ and $\alpha_{\rm CI} = 4.4~M_\odot$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$, respectively. We present CS(7-6) line maps toward the central parsec of the Galactic Center (GC), conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary goal is to find and characterize the gas structure in the inner cavity of the circumnuclear disk (CND) in high resolution (1.3"=0.05 pc). Our large field-of-view mosaic maps -- combining interferometric and single-dish data that recover extended emission - provide a first homogeneous look to resolve and link the molecular streamers in the CND with the neutral nuclear filaments newly detected within the central cavity of the CND. We find that the nuclear filaments are rotating with Keplerian velocities in a nearly face-on orbit with an inclination angle of ~10-20 degree (radius <= 0.5 pc). This is in contrast to the CND which is highly inclined at ~65-80 degree (radius ~2-5 pc). Our analysis suggests a highly warped structure from the CND to the nuclear filaments. This result may hint that the nuclear filaments and the CND were created by different external clouds passing by Sgr A*., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ApJL

Haro 2 , a nearby dwarf starburst dwarf galaxy with strong Ly alpha emission, hosts a starburst that has created outflows and filaments. The clear evidence for galactic outflow makes it an ideal candidate for studying the effects of feedback on molecular gas in a dwarf galaxy. We observed CO(2-1) in Haro 2 at the Submillimeter Array in the compact and extended configurations, and have mapped the molecular emission with velocity resolution 4.1 km/s and spatial resolution 2.0x1.6". With this significant increase of resolution over previous measurements we see that the molecular gas comprises two components: bright clumps associated with the embedded star clusters of the starburst, and fainter extended emission east of the starburst region. The extended emission coincides with an X-ray bubble and has the kinematic signatures of a shell or bubble expanding with velocity +-35 km/s. We suggest that the starburst winds that created the X-Ray bubble have entrained molecular gas, and that the apparent velocity gradient across the photometric axis is an artifact caused by the outflow. (Abbreviated) We investigate the interplay between magnetic (B) field, gravity, and turbulence in the fragmentation process of cores within the filamentary infrared dark cloud G34.43+00.24. We observe the magnetic field (B) morphology across G34.43 and compare with the kinematics obtained from N2H+ across the filament. We derive local velocity gradients from N2H+, tracing motion in the plane of sky, and compare with the observed local B field orientations in the plane of sky. Besides a large-scale east-west velocity gradient, we find a close alignment between local B field orientations and local velocity gradients toward the MM1/MM2 ridge. This local correlation in alignment suggests that gas motions are influenced by the magnetic field morphology or vice versa. Additionally, this alignment seems to be getting even closer with increasing integrated emission in N2H+, possibly indicating that a growing gravitational pull is more and more aligning B field and gas motion. We analyze and quantify B field, gravity, turbulence, and their relative importance toward the MM1, MM2 and MM3 regions with various techniques over two scales, a larger clump area at 2 pc scale and the smaller core area at 0.6 pc scale. While gravitational energy, B field, and turbulent pressure all grow systematically from large to small scale, the ratios among the three constituents develop clearly differently over scale. We propose that this varying relative importance between B field, gravity, and turbulence over scale drives and explains the different fragmentation types seen at sub-pc scale (no fragmentation in MM1; aligned fragmentation in MM2; clustered fragmentation in MM3). We run self-consistent simulations of Milky Way-sized, isolated disk galaxies to study formation and evolution of a stellar bar as well as a nuclear ring in the presence of gas. We consider two sets of models with cold or warm disks that differ in the radial velocity dispersions, and vary the gas fraction $f_{\rm gas}$ by fixing the total disk mass. A bar forms earlier and more strongly in the cold disks with larger $f_{\rm gas}$, while gas progressively delays the bar formation in the warm disks . The bar formation enhances a central mass concentration which in turn makes the bar decay temporarily, after which it regrows in size and strength, eventually becoming stronger in models with smaller $f_{\rm gas}$. Although all bars rotate fast in the beginning, they rapidly turn to slow rotators. In our models, only the gas-free, warm disk undergoes rapid buckling instability, while other disks thicken more gradually via vertical heating. The gas driven inward by the bar potential readily forms a star-forming nuclear ring. The ring is very small when it first forms and grows in size over time. The ring star formation rate is episodic and bursty due to feedback, and well correlated with the mass inflow rate to the ring. Some expanding shells produced by star formation feedback are sheared out in the bar regions and collide with dust lanes to appear as filamentary interbar spurs. The bars and nuclear rings formed in our simulations have properties similar to those in the Milky Way.

Utilizing James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) 850 $\mu$m SCUPOL dust polarization data, we investigate the configuration of the magnetic ($B$) field in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of the Galactic Center (GC). The SCUPOL data show a highly improved polarization coverage and resolution compared to earlier 100 $\mu$m observations. The 850 $\mu$m data have a resolution and coverage similar to previous 350 $\mu$m polarimetry data. However, with a proper sampling on a 10$"$ grid, we find the 850 $\mu$m data trace the morphological structures of the CND substantially better. Furthermore, because the 850 $\mu$m trace the field deeper into the material near Sgr A*, they represent the highest resolution submillimeter probe to date of the CND magnetic field. The observed $B$-field morphology is well described by a self-similar axisymmetric disk model where the radial infall velocity is one quarter of the rotational velocity. A detailed comparison with higher-resolution interferometric maps from the Submillimeter Array further reveals that the $B$-field aligns with the neutral gas streamers connecting to the CND. Moreover, the innermost observed $B$-field structure also appears to trace and align with the mini-spiral located inside the CND. This suggests that there is one underlying $B$-field structure that is connecting the CND with its streamers and the inner mini-spiral. An estimate of $\beta_{\rm Plasma} \lesssim 1-$based on the global B-field morphology that constrains the azimuthal-to-vertical field strength ratio of around 40 combined with a measurement of the azimuthal velocity--indicates that the B-field appears dynamically significant towards the CND and also onwards to the inner mini-spiral., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the role of cold gas in quenching star formation in the green valley by analysing ALMA $^{12}$CO (1-0) observations of three galaxies with resolved optical spectroscopy from the MaNGA survey. We present resolution-matched maps of the star formation rate and molecular gas mass. These data are used to calculate the star formation efficiency (SFE) and gas fraction ($f_{\rm~gas}$) for these galaxies separately in the central `bulge' regions and outer disks. We find that, for the two galaxies whose global specific star formation rate (sSFR) deviates most from the star formation main sequence, the gas fraction in the bulges is significantly lower than that in their disks, supporting an `inside-out' model of galaxy quenching. For the two galaxies where SFE can be reliably determined in the central regions, the bulges and disks share similar SFEs. This suggests that a decline in $f_{\rm~gas}$ is the main driver of lowered sSFR in bulges compared to disks in green valley galaxies. Within the disks, there exist common correlations between the sSFR and SFE and between sSFR and $f_{\rm~gas}$ on kpc scales -- the local SFE or $f_{\rm~gas}$ in the disks declines with local sSFR. Our results support a picture in which the sSFR in bulges is primarily controlled by $f_{\rm~gas}$, whereas both SFE and $f_{\rm~gas}$ play a role in lowering the sSFR in disks. The interaction between a supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the surrounding material is of primary importance in modern astrophysics. The detection of the molecular 2-pc circumnuclear disk (CND) immediately around the Milky Way SMBH, SgrA*, provides an unique opportunity to study SMBH accretion at sub-parsec scales. Our new wide-field CS(2-1) map toward the Galactic center (GC) reveals multiple dense molecular streamers originated from the ambient clouds 20-pc further out, and connecting to the central 2 parsecs of the CND. These dense gas streamers appear to carry gas directly toward the nuclear region and might be captured by the central potential. Our phase-plot analysis indicates that these streamers show a signature of rotation and inward radial motion with progressively higher velocities as the gas approaches the CND and finally ends up co-rotating with the CND. Our results might suggest a possible mechanism of gas feeding the CND from 20 pc around 2 pc in the GC. In this paper, we discuss the morphology and the kinematics of these streamers. As the nearest observable Galactic nucleus, this feeding process may have implications for understanding the processes in extragalactic nuclei., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. We report a new 1-pc (30") resolution CS($J=2-1$) line map of the central 30 pc of the Galactic Center (GC), made with the Nobeyama 45m telescope. We revisit our previous study of the extraplanar feature called polar arc (PA), which is a molecular cloud located above SgrA* with a velocity gradient perpendicular to the Galactic plane. We find that the PA can be traced back to the Galactic disk. This provides clues of the launching point of the PA , roughly $6\times10^{6}$ years ago. Implications of the dynamical time scale of the PA might be related to the Galactic Center Lobe (GCL) at parsec scale. Our results suggest that in the central 30 pc of the GC, the feedback from past explosions could alter the orbital path of the molecular gas down to the central tenth of parsec. In the follow-up work of our new CS($J=2-1$) map, we also find that near the systemic velocity, the molecular gas shows an extraplanar hourglass-shaped feature (HG-feature) with a size of $\sim$13 pc. The latitude-velocity diagrams show that the eastern edge of the HG-feature is associated with an expanding bubble B1, $\sim$7 pc away from SgrA*. The dynamical time scale of this bubble is $\sim3\times10^{5}$ years. This bubble is interacting with the 50 km s$^{-1}$ cloud. Part of the molecular gas from the 50 km s$^{-1}$ cloud was swept away by the bubble to $b=-0.2deg$. The western edge of the HG-feature seems to be the molecular gas entrained from the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud towards the north of the Galactic disk. Compiling data from literature and the ALMA archive, we show enhanced HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) and/or HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6) integrated intensity ratios in circumnuclear molecular gas around active galactic nuclei (AGNs) compared to those in starburst (SB) galaxies (submillimeter HCN-enhancement). The number of sample galaxies is significantly increased from our previous work. We expect this feature could potentially be an extinction-free energy diagnostic tool of nuclear regions of galaxies. Non-LTE radiative transfer modelings of the above molecular emission lines involving both collisional and radiative excitation, as well as a photon trapping effect were conducted to investigate the cause of the high line ratios in AGNs. As a result, we found that enhanced abundance ratios of HCN-to-HCO$^+$ and HCN-to-CS in AGNs as compared to SB galaxies by a factor of a few to even $>$ 10 is a plausible explanation for the submillimeter HCN-enhancement. However, a counter argument of a systematically higher gas density in AGNs than in SB galaxies can also be a plausible scenario. Although we could not fully discriminate these two scenarios at this moment due to insufficient amount of multi-transition, multi-species data, the former scenario equivalently claims for abnormal chemical composition in AGNs. Regarding the actual mechanism to realize the composition, we suggest it is difficult with conventional gas phase X-ray dominated region (XDR) ionization models to reproduce the observed high line ratios. We might have to take into account other mechanisms such as neutral-neutral reactions that are efficiently activated at high temperature environments and/or mechanically heated regions to further understand the high line ratios in AGNs., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report new observations of multiple transitions of the CS molecular lines in the SgrA region of the Galactic center, at an angular resolution of 40" (=1.5 pc). The objective of this paper is to study the polar arc, which is a molecular ridge near the SgrA region, with apparent non-coplanar motions, and a velocity gradient perpendicular to the Galactic plane. With our high resolution dense-gas maps, we search for the base and the origin of the polar arc, which is expected to be embedded in the Galactic disk. We find that the polar arc is connected to a continuous structure from one of the disk ring/arm in both the spatial and velocity domains. This structure near SgrA* has high CS(J=4-3)/CS(J=2-1) ratios >1. That this structure has eluded detection in previous observations, is likely due to the combination of high excitation and low surface brightness temperature. We call this new structure the connecting ridge. We discuss the possible mechanism to form this structure and to lift the gas above the Galactic plane., Comment: 19 pages

We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the central kpc region of the luminous type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with unprecedented high resolution (0.5$"$ $\times$ 0.4$"$ = 165 pc $\times$ 132 pc) at submillimeter wavelengths. Utilizing the wide-bandwidth of ALMA, we simultaneously obtained HCN(4-3), HCO$^+$(4-3), CS(7-6), and partially CO(3-2) line maps, as well as the 860 $\mu$m continuum. The region consists of the central $\sim$ 1$"$ component and the surrounding starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$ 1.5$"$-2.5$"$. Several structures connect these components. Except for CO(3-2), these dense gas tracers are significantly concentrated towards the central $\sim$ 1$"$, suggesting their suitability to probe the nuclear regions of galaxies. Their spatial distribution resembles well those of centimeter and mid-infrared continuum emissions, but it is anti-correlated with the optical one, indicating the existence of dust obscured star formation. The integrated intensity ratios of HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) and HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6) are higher at the AGN position than at the starburst ring, which is consistent to our previous findings (submm-HCN enhancement). However, the HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) ratio at the AGN position of NGC 7469 (1.11$\pm$0.06) is almost half of the corresponding value of the low-luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 (2.0$\pm$0.2), despite the more than two orders of magnitude higher X-ray luminosity of NGC 7469. But the ratio is comparable to that of the close vicinity of the AGN of NGC 1068 ($\sim$ 1.5). Based on these results, we speculate that some other heating mechanisms than X-ray (e.g., mechanical heating due to AGN jet) can contribute significantly for shaping the chemical composition in NGC 1097., Comment: Fixed typos in the title. 15 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables: accepted for publication in ApJ. We present the Green Bank 100m Telescope (GBT) mapping observations of CS 1-0, and the Submillimeter Array (SMA) 157-pointings mosaic of the 0.86 mm dust continuum emission as well as several warm and dense gas tracers, in the central ~20 pc area in Galactic Center. The unprecedentedly large field-of-view and the high angular resolution of our SMA dust image allow the identification of abundant 0.1-0.2 pc scale dense gas clumps. We found that in the Galactic Center, the Class I methanol masers are excellently correlated with the dense gas clumps. However, on the ~0.1 pc scale, these dense gas clumps still have a extremely large linewidth (FWHM~10-20 km/s). Simple calculations suggest that the identified clumps can be possibly the pressurized gas reservoir feeding the formation of 1-10 solar-mass stars. We present the first 100 pc scale view of the dense molecular gas in the central ~ 1.3 kpc region of the type-1 Seyfert NGC 1097 traced by HCN (J=4-3) and HCO+ (J=4-3) lines afforded with ALMA band 7. This galaxy shows significant HCN enhancement with respect to HCO+ and CO in the low-J transitions, which seems to be a common characteristic in AGN environments. Using the ALMA data, we study the characteristics of the dense gas around this AGN and search for the mechanism of HCN enhancement. We find a high HCN (J=4-3) to HCO+ (J=4-3) line ratio in the nucleus. The upper limit of the brightness temperature ratio of HCN (v2=1^{1f}, J=4-3) to HCN (J=4-3) is 0.08, which indicates that IR pumping does not significantly affect the pure rotational population in this nucleus. We also find a higher HCN (J=4-3) to CS (J=7-6) line ratio in NGC 1097 than in starburst galaxies, which is more than 12.7 on the brightness temperature scale. Combined from similar observations from other galaxies, we tentatively suggest that this ratio appears to be higher in AGN-host galaxies than in pure starburst ones similar to the widely used HCN to HCO+ ratio. LTE and non-LTE modeling of the observed HCN and HCO+ lines using J=4-3 and 1-0 data from ALMA, and J=3-2 data from SMA, reveals a high HCN to HCO+ abundance ratio (5 < [HCN]/[HCO+] < 20: non-LTE analysis) in the nucleus, and that the high-J lines (J=4-3 and 3-2) are emitted from dense (10^{4.5} < n_H2 [/cc] < 10^6), hot (70 < Tkin [K] < 550) regions. Finally we propose that the high temperature chemistry is more plausible to explain the observed enhanced HCN emission in NGC 1097 than the pure gas phase PDR/XDR chemistry., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, 10 tables. NGC 1097 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy believed to be interacting with the elliptical galaxy NGC 1097A located to its northwest. It hosts a Seyfert 1 nucleus surrounded by a circumnuclear starburst ring. Two straight dust lanes connected to the ring extend almost continuously out to the bar. The other ends of the dust lanes attach to two main spiral arms. To provide a physical understanding of its structural and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal that many features of the gas morphology and kinematics can be reproduced provided that the gas flow is governed by a gravitational potential associated with a slowly rotating strong bar. By including the self-gravity of the gas disk in our calculation, we have found the starburst ring to be gravitationally unstable which is consistent with the observation in \citet{hsieh11}. Our simulations show that the gas inflow rate is 0.17 M$_\sun$ yr$^{-1}$ into the region within the starburst ring even after its formation, leading to the coexistence of both a nuclear ring and a circumnuclear disk., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the ApJ

We present the Submillimeter Array (SMA) 157-pointing mosaic in 0.86 mm dust continuum emission with 5$".1\times4"$.2 angular resolution, and the NRAO Green Bank 100m Telescope (GBT) observations of the CS/C$^{34}$S/$^{13}$CS 1-0 and SiO 1-0 emission with $\le20"$$\times18"$ angular resolution. The dust continuum image marginally resolves at least several tens of 10-10$^{2}$ $M_{\odot}$ dense clumps in the 5$'$ field including the circumnuclear disk (CND) and the exterior gas streamers. There is very good agreement between the high resolution dust continuum map of the CND and all previous molecular line observations. As the dust emission is the most reliable optically thin tracer of the mass, free from most chemical and excitation effects, we demonstrate the reality of the abundant localized structures within the CND, and their connection to external gas structures. From the spectral line data, the velocity dispersions of the dense clumps and their parent molecular clouds are $\sim$10-20 times higher than their virial velocity dispersions. This supports the idea that the CND and its immediate environment may not be stationary or stable structures. Some of the dense gas clumps are associated with 22 GHz water masers and 36.2 GHz and 44.1 GHz CH$_{3}$OH masers. However, we do not find clumps which are bound by the gravity of the enclosed molecular gas. Hence, the CH$_{3}$OH or H$_{2}$O maser emission may be due to strong (proto)stellar feedback, which may be dispersing some of the gas clumps., Comment: 7 pages, 15 figures; Accepted by ApJ

The supermassive black hole (SMBH), Sgr A*, at the Galactic Center is surrounded by a molecular circumnuclear disk (CND) lying between 1.5-4 pc radii. The irregular and clumpy structures of the CND, suggest dynamical evolution and episodic feeding of gas towards the central SMBH. New sensitive data from the SMA and GBT, reveal several >5-10 pc scale molecular arms, which either directly connect to the CND, or may penetrate inside the CND. The CND appears to be the convergence of the innermost parts of largescale gas streamers, which are responding to the central gravitational potential well. Rather than being a quasi-stationary structure, the CND may be dynamically evolving, incorporating inflow via streamers, and feeding gas towards the center., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present the first interferometric HCN(J = 3-2) and HCO+(J = 3-2) maps in the circumnuclear region of NGC 1097, obtained with the Submillimeter Array. The goal is to study the characteristics of the dense gas associated with the starburst ring/Seyfert nucleus. With these transitions, we suppress the diffuse low density emission in the nuclear region. We detect and resolve the individual compact giant molecular cloud associations (GMAs) in the 1.4 kpc circumnuclear starburst ring and within the 350 pc nuclear region. The nucleus is brighter than the ring in both lines, and contributes to ~20% and ~30% to the total detected HCO+(J = 3-2) and HCN(J = 3-2) flux, within the central 1.4 kpc. The intensity ratios of HCN(J = 3-2)/HCO+(J = 3-2) are roughly unity in the GMAs of the starburst ring. However, this ratio is up to ~2 in the nuclear region. From the HCN(J = 3-2)/HCN(J = 1-0) ratio of <0.2 in the nucleus, we infer that the nuclear HCN(J = 3-2) emission might be optically thin. The HCO+(J = 3-2) and HCN(J = 3-2) show correlations with 12CO(J = 3-2) and the 24{\mu}m emission. The tight correlations of HCN(J = 3-2), HCO+(J = 3-2) and 24{\mu}m emission in the starburst ring suggest that the dense molecular gas and the dust are from the same origins of star forming regions. On the other hand, the HCN(J = 3-2) emission of the nucleus is significantly enhanced, indicating mechanisms other than star formation, such as AGN activities. A self-consistent check of the fractional abundance enhanced by X-ray ionization chemistry of the nucleus is possible with our observations., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We report high resolution 12CO(J = 2-1), 13CO(J = 2-1), and 12CO(J = 3-2) imaging of the Seyfert 1/starburst ring galaxy NGC 1097 with the Submillimeter Array to study the physical and kinematic properties of the 1-kpc circumnuclear starburst ring. Individual star clusters as detected in the HST map of Pa_alpha line emission have been used to determine the star formation rate, and are compared with the properties of the molecular gas. The molecular ring has been resolved into individual clumps at GMA-scale of 200--300 pc in all three CO lines. The intersection between the dust lanes and the starburst ring, which is associated with orbit-crowding region, is resolved into two physically/kinematically distinct features in the 1.5x1.0 (105x70 pc) 12CO(J = 2-1) map. The clumps associated with the dust lanes have broader line width, higher surface gas density, and lower star formation rate, while the narrow line clumps associated with the starburst ring have opposite characteristics. Toomre-Q value under unity at the radius of the ring suggests that the molecular ring is gravitationally unstable to fragment at the scale of the GMA. The line widths and surface density of gas mass of the clumps show an azimuthal variation related to the large scale dynamics. The star formation rate, on the other hand, is not significantly affected by the dynamics, but has a correlation with the intensity ratio of 12CO (J = 3-2) and 12CO(J = 2-1), which traces the denser gas associated with star formation. Our resolved CO map, especially in the orbit-crowding region, for the first time demonstrates observationally that the physical/kinematic properties of the GMAs are affected by the large scale bar-potential dynamics in NGC 1097., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, accepted by ApJ

We have mapped the central region of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1097 in 12CO(J=2-1) with the Submillieter Array (SMA). The 12CO(J=2-1) map shows a central concentration and a surrounding ring, which coincide respectively with the Seyfert nucleus and a starburst ring. The line intensity peaks at the nucleus, whereas in a previously published 12CO(J=1-0) map the intensity peaks at the starburst ring. The molecular ring has an azimuthally averaged 12CO(J=2-1)/(J=1-0) intensity ratio (R21) of about unity, which is similar to those in nearby active star forming galaxies, suggesting that most of the molecular mass in the ring is involved in fueling the starburst. The molecular gas can last for only about 1.2\times10^8 years without further replenishment assuming a constant star formation rate and a perfect conversion of gas to stars. The velocity map shows that the central molecular gas is rotating with the molecular ring in the same direction, while its velocity gradient is much steeper than that of the ring. This velocity gradient of the central gas is similar to what is usually observed in some Seyfert 2 galaxies. To view the active nucleus directly in the optical, the central molecular gas structure can either be a low-inclined disk or torus but not too low to be less massive than the mass of the host galaxy itself, be a highly-inclined thin disk or clumpy and thick torus, or be an inner part of the galactic disk. The R21 value of ~1.9 of the central molecular gas component, which is significantly higher than the value found at the molecular gas ring, indicates that the activity of the Seyfert nucleus may have a significant influence on the conditions of the molecular gas in the central component., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ
