Simple Summary: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) are commonly used for acid reduction in patients with peptic ulcer disease or esophageal reflux. Previous studies have shown that acid-reducing agents (ARAs) might affect bevacizumab treatment. This study found that PPI use worsened the oncological outcomes in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) undergoing bevacizumab treatment. There was a negative dose–response relationship when compared to H2RA use. Physicians should consider the benefits and risks of long-term use of ARAs, especially PPIs, in mCRC patients treated with bevacizumab. Background: Approximately one-third of patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) and treated with bevacizumab are prescribed proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs). However, there is limited data on the effects of PPIs and H2RAs in these patients. To investigate the oncological outcomes of PPI and H2RA use in CRC patients treated with bevacizumab, we performed a retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Cancer Registry Database from 2005 to 2020. Methods: In CRC patients treated with bevacizumab, the PPI users and H2RA users were matched with patients without acid-reducing agents (ARAs) by 1:4 propensity score matching. PPI users and H2RA users were matched with propensity scoring in a 1:1 ratio. We divided patients into 4 cumulative PPI dosage levels to assess the dose–response relationship. The primary endpoints were 5-year overall survival and cancer-specific survival. Results: Compared with ARA non-users, both H2RA users and PPI users were associated with reduced overall survival. PPI users were associated with more significant negative effects on overall survival. Compared with H2RA users, PPI users were associated with lower 5-year overall survival (aHR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.09–1.31) and cancer-specific survival (aHR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.09–1.31). A similar dose–response relationship was observed for PPI users in terms of 5-year overall survival and cancer-specific overall survival. Conclusions: Compared to H2AR use, PPI use was associated with dose-dependent poorer oncological outcomes in metastatic CRC patients treated with bevacizumab. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rosmarinic acid (RA) has demonstrated anticancer effects on several types of malignancies. However, whether RA promotes the anticancer effect of cisplatin on colorectal cancer cells remains sketchy. This study aimed to explore whether RA potentiates the cytotoxicity of cisplatin against colon cancer cells and the underlying mechanism. Cell viability, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis was evaluated using sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay, flow cytometric analysis, and propidium iodide/Annexin V staining, respectively. Western blotting was utilized to analyze signaling pathways. Our findings showed that RA significantly enhanced the inhibitory effect on cell viability and the induction of apoptosis on the colon cancer cell lines DLD-1 and LoVo. Signaling cascade analysis revealed that the combination of RA and cisplatin jointly induced Bax and caspase activation while downregulating Bcl-2, glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), and SLC7A11 in DLD-1 cells. Moreover, caspase inhibitor and ferroptosis inhibitor significantly reversed the inhibition of cell viability in response to RA combined with cisplatin. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that RA enhances the cytotoxicity of cisplatin against colon cancer cells, attributing to the promotion of apoptosis and ferroptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With increasing pressures on big businesses to expand performance objectives beyond financial metrics and to include social and environmental objectives, business organizations experience rising tension in balancing these various objectives. Oftentimes, subjective narratives can weigh in on the relative importance of competing objectives. This subjectivity is a contributing factor to findings of inconsistent and mixed results for the financial impact of an organization's environmental performance in the prior literature. Our research effort seeks to provide a positivist perspective on the relationship between environmental performance and financial performance of companies. Also, given the importance of efficient operations for corporate success, we examine the influence of operational productivity on the environmental and financial performance relationship. Using a global dataset compiled from reputable sources, including 1738 unique firms spanning between the years 2011 and 2020, we find statistically significant results that indicate that lower carbon emissions are associated with higher profitability when a firm has competitively high operational productivity. Companies with operational productivity that is competitively low do not perform well financially when carbon emissions are low. Thus, our study fills a research gap in this domain by relying exclusively on a broad set of purely objective data and illuminating the importance of operational efficiency on the relationship between the environmental performance and financial performance of firms. This paper presents the findings of investigating core-shell multiple quantum well nanowire light-emitting diodes (LEDs). A fully self-consistent three dimensional model that solves Poisson and drift-diffusion equations was employed to investigate the current flow and quantum-confined stark effect. The core-shell nanowire LED showed a weaker droop effect than that of conventional planar LEDs because of a larger active area and stronger recombination in nonpolar quantum wells (QWs). The current spreading effect was examined to determine the carrier distribution at the sidewall of core-shell nanowire LEDs. The results revealed that a larger aspect ratio by increasing the nanowire height could increase the nonpolar-active area volume and reduce the droop effect at the same current density. Making the current spreading length exceed a greater nanowire height is critical for using the enhancement of nonpolar QWs effectively, when an appropriate transparent conducting layer might be necessary. The cross-sectional sizes of the regularly patterned GaN nanorods (NRs) and InGaN/GaN quantum-well (QW) NRs of different heights and different hexagon orientations, which are grown on the patterned templates of different hole diameters, pitches, and crystal orientations, are compared. It is found that the cross-sectional size of the GaN NR, which is formed with the pulsed growth mode, is mainly controlled by the patterned hole diameter, and the thickness of the sidewall QW structure is mainly determined by the NR height. The cross-sectional size variation of GaN NR is interpreted by the quasi-three-dimensional nature of atom supply amount for precipitating a two-dimensional disk-shaped NR segment. The variation of the sidewall QW structure is explained by the condition of constituent atom supply in the gap volume between the neighboring NRs. Also, we compare the cathodoluminescence emission wavelengths among those samples of different growth conditions. Generally speaking, the QW NR with a smaller height, a larger cross-sectional size, or a larger pitch has a longer emission wavelength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
