A colorimetric and fluorescent dual-channel chemosensor (G1) with a simple structure was designed and synthesized to identify [Hg.sup.2+] in an aqueous solution with high selectivity and sensitivity. After adding [Hg.sup.2+], the color of G1 in the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/[H.sub.2]O (2:8, v/v) solution changed from colorless to a distinct rose red, whereas the fluorescence changed from colorless to bright orange under ultraviolet (UV) light. The detection limit on the fluorescence response of G1 to [Hg.sup.2+] was as low as 6.09 * [10.sup.-7] mol/L. The results of the Job's plot suggested that the combined stoichiometry between G1 and [Hg.sup.2+] was 1:1. By successively adding [Hg.sup.2+] and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), the fluorescence process can be reversed and almost no fluorescence loss. We designed and synthesized a carboxylic acid-functionalized coumarin derivative sensor F3, which has a dual-channel response to CN− in DMSO/H2O (2:3, v/v) solution with a fluorescence detection limit of 3.09 × 10–8 M. After adding AcOH to F3-CN system, the fluorescence of the system recovered to its initial state, so F3 is a reversible fluorescence chemical sensor. Based on this, we applied it to the ultrasensitive IMPLICATION logic gate. In addition, we made a test strips that can be used to quickly and conveniently detect CN−. According to various characteristics and applications of F3, it can be concluded that sensor F3 is a promising sensor. A novel highly selective chemosensor Z based on rhodamine B hydrazone derivatives was designed and synthesized, and it showed both colorimetric and “turn-on” fluorescence responses for CN− in an aqueous solution. The results showed that after adding CN− ions in aqueous solution, the chemosensor Z showed significant color change from colorless to pale-yellow, which was visible to the naked eye, and it rapidly produced strong green fluorescence. The probe could distinguish CN− by deprotonation and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanisms, as evidenced by 1H-NMR titration and DFT calculations. In addition, the detection limit of the fluorescence response of the sensor for CN− was 5.81 × 10−8 M, which was measured by titration. The chemosensor Z has been successfully used to detect CN− in sprouting potatoes. In the title compound, C(17)H(17)ClN(2)O(3)S, the central carbonyl-thio-urea unit is nearly planar [maximum atomic deviation = 0.019 (3) Å] and makes dihedral angles of 2.47 (7) and 17.76 (6)° with the terminal benzene rings. An intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯S and C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonding is observed in the crystal structure.

The interactions of N-aryl-N'-(4-ethyloxybenzoyl) thioureas derivatives and anions such as F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, CH3COO-, H2POT4-, HSO4- and NO3- in DMSO were investigated by UV-Vis and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results showed that hydrogen--bonding complexes were formed between receptors and the three anions such as F-, CH3COO- and H2PO4-, and the solutions turned light yellow from colorlessness, but there had no evident binding with Cl-, Br-, I-, HSO4- and NO3-. It was regular that the two receptors had different binding ability with F-, CH3COO- and H2PO4-. For the same anion, the association constants followed the trend: receptor 1a > receptor 1b.
