Despite the growing global demand for large language models (LLMs) that serve users from diverse linguistic backgrounds, most cutting-edge LLMs remain predominantly English-centric. This creates a performance gap across languages, restricting access to advanced AI services for non-English speakers. Current methods to enhance multilingual capabilities largely rely on data-driven post-training techniques, such as multilingual instruction tuning or continual pre-training. However, these approaches encounter significant challenges, including the scarcity of high-quality multilingual datasets and the limited enhancement of multilingual capabilities. They often suffer from off-target issues and catastrophic forgetting of central language abilities. To this end, we propose Lens, a novel approach to enhance multilingual capabilities of LLMs by leveraging their internal language representation spaces. Specially, Lens operates by manipulating the hidden representations within the language-agnostic and language-specific subspaces from top layers of LLMs. Using the central language as a pivot, the target language is drawn closer to it within the language-agnostic subspace, allowing it to inherit well-established semantic representations. Meanwhile, in the language-specific subspace, the representations of the target and central languages are pushed apart, enabling the target language to express itself distinctly. Extensive experiments on one English-centric and two multilingual LLMs demonstrate that Lens effectively improves multilingual performance without sacrificing the original central language capabilities of the backbone model, achieving superior results with much fewer computational resources compared to existing post-training approaches., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables

Safety alignment of large language models (LLMs) has been gaining increasing attention. However, current safety-aligned LLMs suffer from the fragile and imbalanced safety mechanisms, which can still be induced to generate unsafe responses, exhibit over-safety by rejecting safe user inputs, and fail to preserve general utility after safety alignment. To this end, we propose a novel post safety alignment (PSA) method to address these inherent and emerging safety challenges, including safety enhancement, over-safety mitigation, and utility preservation. In specific, we introduce \textsc{SafePatching}, a novel framework for comprehensive and efficient PSA, where two distinct safety patches are developed on the harmful data to enhance safety and mitigate over-safety concerns, and then seamlessly integrated into the target LLM backbone without compromising its utility. Extensive experiments show that \textsc{SafePatching} achieves a more comprehensive and efficient PSA than baseline methods. It even enhances the utility of the backbone, further optimizing the balance between being helpful and harmless in current aligned LLMs. Also, \textsc{SafePatching} demonstrates its superiority in continual PSA scenarios., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures and 12 tables

The technological landscape is swiftly advancing towards large-scale systems, creating significant opportunities, particularly in the domain of Terahertz (THz) communications. Networks designed for massive connectivity, comprising numerous Internet of Things (IoT) devices, are at the forefront of this advancement. In this paper, we consider Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)-enabled networks that support these IoT devices with massive Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (mURLLC) services.The focus of such networks is information freshness, with the Age-of-Information (AoI) serving as the pivotal performance metric. In particular, we aim to minimize the maximum AoI among IoT devices by optimizing the scheduling policy. Our analytical findings establish the convexity property of the problem, which can be solved efficiently. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of AoI-oriented cluster capacity, examining the relationship between the number of supported devices and the AoI performance in the network. Numerical simulations validate the advantage of our proposed approach in enhancing AoI performance, indicating its potential to guide the design of future THz communication systems for IoT applications requiring mURLLC services.

Emotional Intelligence (EI), consisting of emotion perception, emotion cognition and emotion expression, plays the critical roles in improving user interaction experience for the current large language model (LLM) based conversational general AI assistants. Previous works mainly focus on raising the emotion perception ability of them via naive fine-tuning on EI-related classification or regression tasks. However, this leads to the incomplete enhancement of EI and catastrophic forgetting of the general intelligence (GI). To this end, we first introduce \textsc{EiBench}, a large-scale collection of EI-related tasks in the text-to-text formation with task instructions that covers all three aspects of EI, which lays a solid foundation for the comprehensive EI enhancement of LLMs. Then a novel \underline{\textbf{Mo}}dular \underline{\textbf{E}}motional \underline{\textbf{I}}ntelligence enhancement method (\textbf{MoEI}), consisting of Modular Parameter Expansion and intra-inter modulation, is proposed to comprehensively enhance the EI of LLMs without compromise their GI. The continual learning (CL) ability is vital for deploying large language models (LLMs) in the dynamic world. Existing methods devise the learning module to acquire task-specific knowledge with parameter-efficient tuning (PET) block and the selection module to pick out the corresponding one for the testing input, aiming at handling the challenges of catastrophic forgetting and knowledge transfer in CL. However, these methods tend to address only one of the challenges, ignoring the potential of aligning the two modules to effectively address catastrophic forgetting and knowledge transfer simultaneously. To this end, we propose a novel Shared Attention Framework (SAPT), to align the PET learning and selection via the Shared Attentive Learning \& Selection module. Extensive Experiments on two CL benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of SAPT. Traffic data serves as a fundamental component in both research and applications within intelligent transportation systems. However, real-world transportation data, collected from loop detectors or similar sources, often contains missing values (MVs), which can adversely impact associated applications and research. Instead of discarding this incomplete data, researchers have sought to recover these missing values through numerical statistics, tensor decomposition, and deep learning techniques. In this paper, we propose an innovative deep learning approach for imputing missing data. A graph attention architecture is employed to capture the spatial correlations present in traffic data, while a bidirectional neural network is utilized to learn temporal information. How to provide information security while fulfilling ultra reliability and low-latency requirements is one of the major concerns for enabling the next generation of ultra-reliable and low-latency communications service (xURLLC), specially in machine-type communications. In this work, we investigate the reliability-security tradeoff via defining the leakage-failure probability, which is a metric that jointly characterizes both reliability and security performances for short-packet transmissions. We discover that the system performance can be enhanced by counter-intuitively allocating fewer resources for the transmission with finite blocklength (FBL) codes. In order to solve the corresponding optimization problem for the joint resource allocation, we propose an optimization framework, that leverages lower-bounded approximations for the decoding error probability in the FBL regime. We characterize the convexity of the reformulated problem and establish an efficient iterative searching method, the convergence of which is guaranteed. To show the extendability of the framework, we further discuss the blocklength allocation schemes with practical requirements of reliable-secure performance, as well as the transmissions with the statistical channel state information (CSI). We study a multi-source wireless power transfer (WPT) enabled network supporting multi-sensor transmissions. Activated by energy harvesting (EH) from multiple WPT sources, sensors transmit short packets to a destination with finite blocklength (FBL) codes. This work for the first time characterizes the FBL reliability for such multi-source WPT enabled network and provides reliability-oriented resource allocation designs, while a practical nonlinear EH model is considered. For scenario with a fixed frame structure, we maximize the FBL reliability via optimally allocating the transmit power among multi-source. In particular, we first investigate the relationship between the FBL reliability and multiple WPT source power, based on which a power allocation problem is formulated. To solve the formulated non-convex problem, we introduce auxiliary variables and apply successive convex approximation (SCA) technique to the non-convex component. Consequently, a sub-optimal solution can be obtained. Moreover, we extend our design into a dynamic frame structure scenario, i.e., the blocklength allocated for WPT phase and short-packet transmission phase are adjustable, which introduces more flexibility and new challenges to the system design. We provide a joint power and blocklength allocation design to minimize the system overall error probability under the total power and blocklength constraints. To address the high-dimensional optimization problem, auxiliary variables introduction, multiple variable substitutions and SCA technique utilization are exploited to reformulate and efficiently solve the problem. Finally, through numerical results, we validate our analytical model and evaluate the system performance, where a set of guidelines for practical system design are concluded.

The extreme requirements for high reliability and low latency in the upcoming Sixth Generation (6G) wireless networks are challenging the design of multi-hop wireless transport networks. Inspired by the advent of the virtualization concept in the wireless networks design and openness paradigm as fostered by the O-RAN Alliance, we target a revolutionary resource allocation scheme to improve the overall transmission efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the problem of multi-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime, and propose a DMH-HARQ scheme, which maximizes the end-to-end (E2E) communication reliability in the wireless transport network. We also propose an integer dynamic programming (DP) algorithm to efficiently solve the optimal DMH-HARQ strategy. Constrained within a certain time frame to accomplish E2E transmission, our proposed approach is proven to outperform the conventional listening-based cooperative ARQ, as well as any static HARQ strategy, regarding the E2E reliability. Enabling ultra-reliable and low-latency communication services while providing massive connectivity is one of the major goals to be accomplished in future wireless communication networks. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a hybrid multi-access scheme in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime that combines the advantages of both non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and time-division multiple access (TDMA) schemes. Two latency-sensitive application scenarios are studied, distinguished by whether the queuing behaviour has an influence on the transmission performance or not. In particular, for the latency-critical case with one-shot transmission, we aim at a certain physical-layer quality-of-service (QoS) performance, namely the optimization of the reliability. And for the case in which queuing behaviour plays a role, we focus on the link-layer QoS performance and provide a design that maximizes the effective capacity. For both designs, we leverage the characterizations in the FBL regime to provide the optimal framework by jointly allocating the blocklength and transmit power of each user. In particular, for the reliability-oriented design, the original problem is decomposed and the joint convexity of sub-problems is shown via a variable substitution method. For the effective-capacity-oriented design, we exploit the method of Lagrange multipliers to formulate a solvable dual problem with strong duality to the original problem. To support ultra-reliable and low-latency services for mission-critical applications, transmissions are usually carried via short blocklength codes, i.e., in the so-called finite blocklength (FBL) regime. Different from the infinite blocklength regime where transmissions are assumed to be arbitrarily reliable at the Shannon's capacity, the reliability and capacity performances of an FBL transmission are impacted by the coding blocklength. The relationship among reliability, coding rate, blocklength and channel quality has recently been characterized in the literature, considering the FBL performance model. In this paper, we follow this model, and prove the joint convexity of the FBL error probability with respect to blocklength and transmit power within a region of interest, as a key enabler for designing systems to achieve globally optimal performance levels. Moreover, we apply the joint convexity to general use cases and efficiently solve the joint optimization problem in the setting with multiple users. We also extend the applicability of the proposed approach by proving that the joint convexity still holds in fading channels, as well as in relaying networks. Owing to the unique advantages of low cost and controllability, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising candidate to address the blockage issue in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, consequently has captured widespread attention in recent years. However, the joint active beamforming and passive beamforming design is an arduous task due to the high computational complexity and the dynamic changes of wireless environment. In this paper, we consider a RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) mmWave system and aim to develop a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithm to jointly design active hybrid beamformer at the base station (BS) side and passive beamformer at the RIS side. By employing an advanced soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm, we propose a maximum entropy based DRL algorithm, which can explore more stochastic policies than deterministic policy, to design active analog precoder and passive beamformer simultaneously. Then, the digital precoder is determined by minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed SAC algorithm can achieve better performance compared with conventional optimization algorithm and DRL algorithm.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as an extraordinarily promising technology to solve the blockage problem of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications owing to its capable of establishing a reconfigurable wireless propagation. In this paper, we focus on a RIS-assisted mmWave communication network consisting of multiple base stations (BSs) serving a set of user equipments (UEs). Considering the BS-RIS-UE association problem which determines that the RIS should assist which BS and UEs, we joint optimize BS-RIS-UE association and passive beamforming at RIS to maximize the sum-rate of the system. To solve this intractable non-convex problem, we propose a soft actor-critic (SAC) deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint beamforming and BS-RIS-UE association design algorithm, which can learn the best policy by interacting with the environment using less prior information and avoid falling into the local optimal solution by incorporating with the maximization of policy information entropy. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SAC-DRL algorithm can achieve significant performance gains compared with benchmark schemes.

Emerging wireless control applications demand for extremely high closed-loop reliability under strict latency constraints, which the conventional Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) solutions with static schedules fail to provide. To overcome this issue and enable data-link layer error control for ultra reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services, we propose a novel protocol: the Closed-Loop ARQ (CLARQ), which forces to accomplish an information exchange round within a fixed loop-back latency, and dynamically re-allocates the remaining resource between uplink and downlink slots upon the result of last uplink transmission. The proposed method guarantees to meet the latency requirement, while delivering high communication reliability and power efficiency. It can be efficiently offline optimized by means of dynamic programming techniques, and is capable of real-time deployment with a low-cost implementation based on look-up tables. Numerical evaluations have verified that CLARQ outperforms baselines with significantly improved closed-loop reliability and reduced energy consumption. Especially, over a Rayleigh channel with 0dB mean SNR, it is able to provide a closed-loop error rate below 1e-7 within 10ms loop-back latency, which makes our proposal competitive for practical URLLC applications in future 5G-and-beyond networks., Comment: Accepted on 03.07.2021 by IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications for publication

We consider a cognitive radio based Internet of Things (CR-IoT) system where the secondary IoT device (SD) accesses the licensed channel during the transmission vacancies of the primary IoT device (PD). We focus on the impact of the IoT devices' heterogeneous traffic pattern on the energy efficiency and on the age of information (AoI) performance of the SD. We first derive closed-form expressions of the energy efficiency and the average AoI, and subsequently explore their convexity and monotonicity to the transmit power. Following these characterizations, an optimal transmit power optimization algorithm (TPOA) is proposed for the SD to maximize the energy efficiency while maintaining the average AoI under a predefined threshold. Edge computing has become one of the key enablers for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications in the industrial Internet of Things in the fifth generation communication systems, and is also a promising technology in the future sixth generation communication systems. In this work, we consider the application of edge computing to smart factories for mission-critical task offloading through wireless links. In such scenarios, although high end-to-end delays from the generation to completion of tasks happen with low probability, they may incur severe casualties and property loss, and should be seriously treated. Inspired by the risk management theory widely used in finance, we adopt the Conditional Value at Risk to capture the tail of the delay distribution. An upper bound of the Conditional Value at Risk is derived through analysis of the queues both at the devices and the edge computing servers. We aim to find out the optimal offloading policy taking into consideration both the average and the worst case delay performance of the system. Given that the formulated optimization problem is a non-convex mixed integer non-linear programming problem, a decomposition into sub-problems is performed and a two-stage heuristic algorithm is proposed. In this paper, we consider a cooperative device-todevice (D2D) communication system, where the D2D transmitters (DTs) act as relays to assist the densified cellular network users (CUs) for transmission quality of service (QoS) improvement. The proposed system achieves a win-win situation, i.e. improving the spectrum efficiency of the CUs that cannot meet their rate requirement while providing spectrum access for D2D pairs. Unlike previous works, to reduce the overhead, we design a novel two-timescale resource allocation scheme, in which the pairing between CUs and D2D pairs is decided at a long timescale and transmission time for CU and D2D pair is determined at a short timescale. Specifically, to characterize the long-term payoff of each potential CU-D2D pair, we investigate the optimal cooperation policy to decide the transmission time based on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). We prove that the optimal policy is a threshold policy which can be achieved via binary search. Since CUs and D2D pairs are self-interested, they are paired only when they agree to cooperate mutually. Therefore, to study the cooperation behaviors of CUs and D2D pairs, we formulate the pairing problem as a matching game, based on the long-term payoff achieved by the optimal cooperation policy of each possible pairing. Furthermore, unlike most previous matching models in D2D networks, we allow transfer between CUs and D2D pairs to improve the performance. To solve the pairing problem, a distributed algorithm is proposed, which converges to an \epsilon-stable matching. We show that there is a tradeoff between the optimality and the computational complexity of the algorithm. We also analyze the algorithm in terms of the robustness to the unilateral deviation of D2D pairs. We consider a fully-loaded ground wireless network supporting unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) transmission services. To enable the overload transmissions to a ground user (GU) and a UAV, two transmission schemes are employed, namely non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and relaying, depending on whether or not the GU and UAV are served simultaneously. Under the assumption of the system operating with infinite blocklength (IBL) codes, the IBL throughputs of both the GU and the UAV are derived under the two schemes. More importantly, we also consider the scenario in which data packets are transmitted via finite blocklength (FBL) codes, i.e., data transmission to both the UAV and the GU is performed under low-latency and high reliability constraints. In this setting, the FBL throughputs are characterized again considering the two schemes of NOMA and relaying. Following the IBL and FBL throughput characterizations, optimal resource allocation designs are subsequently proposed to maximize the UAV throughput while guaranteeing the throughput of the cellular user.Moreover, we prove that the relaying scheme is able to provide transmission service to the UAV while improving the GU's performance, and that the relaying scheme potentially offers a higher throughput to the UAV in the FBL regime than in the IBL regime. The convex property of a nonlinear wireless power transfer (WPT) is characterized in this work. Following a nonlinear energy harvesting model, we express the relationship between the harvested direct current (DC) power and the power of the received radio-frequency signal via an implicit function, based on which the convex property is further proved. In particular, for a predefined rectifier's input signal distribution, we show that the harvested DC power of the nonlinear model is convex in the reciprocal of the rectifier's input signal power.
