Constitutive models are essential for describing the mechanical behavior of materials under high temperatures and pressures, among which the Steinberg-Guinan (SG) model is widely adopted. Recent work has discovered a peculiar dual anomaly of compression-induced softening and heating-induced hardening in the elasticity of compressed vanadium [Phys. Rev. B 104, 134102 (2021)], which is beyond the capability of the SG model to describe. In this work, a modified SG constitutive model is proposed to embody such an anomalous behavior. Elemental vanadium is considered as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of this improved model in describing the dual anomalies of mechanical elasticity. This new variant of the SG model can also be applied to other materials that present an irregular variation in the mechanical elasticity, and is important to faithfully model and simulate the mechanical response of materials under extreme conditions., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

First-principles calculations have been used to investigate the electronic and topological properties of the two-dimensional C6-2x(BN)x biphenylene network, a graphene-like structure composed of not only hexagonal ring but also octagonal and square rings. Nontrivial topological properties have been found in two of them, with a stoichiometry of C4BN and C2(BN)2. The former C4BN is predicted to be a type-II Dirac semimetal with a superconducting critical temperature Tc=0.38K, which is similar to the pure carbon biphenylene network (C-BPN). The latter shows a novel isolated edge state exists between the conduction and valence bands. By regulation of strains and virtual-crystal approximation calculations, we found the annihilation of two pairs of Dirac points (DPs) in the non-high symmetric region (non-HSR) causes the two corresponding edge states stick together to generate this isolated edge state. In addition, we found that one pair of DPs arises from the shift of DPs in the C-BPN, while another new pair of DPs emerges around the Time Reversal Invariant Momenta (TRIM) point X due to the doping of boron and nitrogen. We constructed a tight-binding (TB) model to reveal the mechanism of forming the isolated edge state from the C-BPN to C2(BN)2. Robust metallic surface states (MSS) of topological insulator (TI) against imperfections and perturbations are important in broad applications such as chemical catalysis and quantum computing. Unfortunately, they are suffered from the narrow band gap that can be accessed. Searching for MSS with large bulk band gap beyond conventional TIs becomes a quest. In this work, inspired by the adiabatic connection principle in real space, we identify that all electrides, a new class of emerging materials, must host robust and universal MSS that resists any disturbances, in spite of the fact that some of them could be classified as trivial in standard topology theory. This counterintuitive property is traced to the specific charge localization-delocalization change intrinsic to electride when approaching the crystalline surface or interface, which is a kind of interstice-centered to atom-centered transition in the real-space topology of the charge density distribution, and is sharply different from the band inversion in the standard topology theory. The new mechanism circumvents the obstacle that limits the band gap of TI. Robust and universal MSS in an electride that conventionally-determined as trivial but with a colossal band gap beyond 6.13 eV are demonstrated. This gap size is about 6-fold larger than the highest record of known "wide-gap" TIs, thus opens up new avenues to universal MSS with gigantic bulk gap., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, with supporting information

U-based binary alloys have been widely adopted in fast nuclear reactors, but their stability under extreme conditions of high-pressure is almost unknown, mounting up to latent risk in applications. Here, possible ordered phases in U-Zr system up to 200 GPa are comprehensively investigated by unbiased first-principles structure prediction. Stable U2Zr, metastable U3Zr and U4Zr phases are discovered for the first time, which exhibit strong stability under compression. They all are metallic, with 5f electrons of uranium dominating the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. Prominent ionic interactions between U and Zr atoms, as well as covalent interactions between adjacent uranium atoms, are found. The same strategy is applied to explore the stability of ordered phases in other U-based binary transition metal alloys, U-X (X= Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Y, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W). Stable and metastable ordered phases similar to U-Zr alloy are unveiled, all with similar electronic structures. For these alloys, we find that the structure of U2X (X=Zr, Ti, Hf) hosts a unique hybrid phase transition similar to U2Nb, which is a superposition of a first-order transition and a second-order transition. The prediction of these novel phases not only refutes the stability of the long-believed ordered phase I4/mmm-U2Mo, but also rewrites the phase diagrams of U-X (X= Zr, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta) alloys under high pressure. Hydrogen and lithium, along with their compounds, are crucial materials for nuclear fusion research. High-pressure studies have revealed intricate structural transitions in all these materials. However, research on lithium hydrides beyond LiH has mostly focused on the low-temperature regime. Here, we use density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the behavior of LiH2, a hydrogen-rich compound, near its melting point. Our study is particularly relevant to the low-pressure region of the compression pathway of lithium hydrides toward fusion. We discovered a premelting superionic phase transition in LiH2 that has significant implications for its mass transportation, elastic properties, and sound velocity. The theoretical boundary for the superionic transition and melting temperature was then determined. In contrast, we also found that the primary compound of lithium hydrides, LiH, does not exhibit a superionic transition. These findings have important implications for optimizing the compression path to achieve the ignition condition in inertial confinement fusion research, especially when lithium tritium-deuteride(LiTD) are used as the fuel., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, with supplementary material

The analysis of proteins in the gas phase benefits from detectors that exhibit high efficiency and precise spatial resolution. Although modern secondary electron multipliers already address numerous analytical requirements, new methods are desired for macromolecules at low energy. Previous studies have proven the sensitivity of superconducting detectors to high-energy particles in time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Here we explore a new energy regime and demonstrate that superconducting nanowire detectors are exceptionally well suited for quadrupole mass spectrometry. Our detectors exhibit an outstanding quantum yield at remarkably low impact energies. Notably, at low ion energy, their sensitivity surpasses conventional ion detectors by three orders of magnitude, and they offer the possibility to discriminate molecules by their impact energy and charge. By combining these detectors into arrays, we demonstrate low-energy ion beam profilometry, while our cryogenic electronics pave the way for future developments of highly integrated detectors., Comment: 9 figures, 5 suppl. figures

Ordered intermetallics are long believed to be the final products of the aging of U-Nb solid solutions at low temperatures, a crucial property for the practical applications of this alloy in engineering and industry. However, such conjectured ordered compounds have not been experimentally or theoretically established. Herein, numerical evidence for ordered intermetallic U-Nb compounds is presented using thorough first-principles structure predictions up to 500 GPa. Two stable U2Nb compounds and one metastable U2Nb and one metastable U3Nb were discovered. A unique hybridized transition driven by pressure was observed in U2Nb, which is a superposition of one first-order transition and another second-order transition, leading to striking features near the transition pressure of 21.6 GPa. The decomposition limit of these compounds at high temperature was also investigated. The strong stability of U2Nb in the region of low pressure and high temperature was revealed. This discovery of ordered U2Nb and its strong stability over a wide pressure range completely changed the phase diagram of U-Nb alloys and shed new light on the dynamic response and aging mechanism of U-Nb alloys., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, with Supplementary Material

The temperature-dependent effective potential (TDEP) method for anharmonic phonon dispersion is generalized to the full potential case by combining with path integral formalism. This extension naturally resolves the intrinsic difficulty in the original TDEP at low temperature. The new method is applied to solid metallic hydrogen at high pressure. A colossal nuclear quantum effect (NQE) and subsequent anharmonicity are discovered, which not only leads to unexpectedly large drift of protons, but also slows down the convergence rate substantially when computing the phonon dispersions. By employing direct ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulations as the benchmark, a possible breakdown of phonon picture in metallic hydrogen due to colossal NQE is indicated, implying novel lattice dynamical phenomena might exist. Studying the physical properties of materials under high pressure and temperature through experiments is difficult. Theoretical simulations can compensate for this deficiency. Currently, large-scale simulations using machine learning force fields are gaining popularity. As an important nuclear energy material, the evolution of the physical properties of uranium under extreme conditions is still unclear. Herein, we trained an accurate machine learning force field on alpha-U and predicted the lattice dynamics and elastic properties at high pressures and temperatures. The force field agrees well with the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and experimental results, and it exhibits higher accuracy than classical potentials. Based on the high-temperature lattice dynamics study, we first present the temperature-pressure range in which the Kohn anomalous behavior of the ${\Sigma}$4 optical mode exists. Phonon spectral function analysis showed that the phonon anharmonicity of alpha-U is very weak. We predict that the single-crystal elastic constants C44, C55, C66, polycrystalline modulus (E,G), and polycrystalline sound velocity ($C_L$,$C_S$) have strong heating-induced softening. All the elastic moduli exhibited compression-induced hardening behavior. The Poisson's ratio shows that it is difficult to compress alpha-U at high pressures and temperatures. Moreover, we observed that the material becomes substantially more anisotropic at high pressures and temperatures. The accurate predictions of alpha-U demonstrate the reliability of the method. Elasticity is one of the most fundamental mechanical properties of solid. In high-throughput design of advanced materials, there is an imperative demand for the capability to quickly calculate and screen a massive pool of candidate structures. A fully automatized pipeline with minimal human intervention is the key to provide high efficiency to achieve the goal. Here, we introduce a tool-kit MyElas that aims to address this problem by forging all pre-processing, elastic constant and other related property calculations, and post-processing into an integrated framework that automatically performs the assigned tasks to drive data flowing through parallelized pipelines from input to output. The core of MyElas is to calculate the second and third order elastic constants of a solid with the energy-strain method from first-principles. MyElas can auto-analyze the elastic constants, to derive other related physical quantities. Furthermore, the tool-kit also integrates a visualization function, which can, for example, plot the spatial anisotropy of elastic modulus and sound velocity of monocrystalline. Solid usually becomes harder and tougher under compression, and turns softer at elevated temperature. Recently, compression-induced softening and heating-induced hardening (CISHIH) dual anomaly was predicted in group VB elements such as vanadium. Here, the evidence for this counterintuitive phenomenon is reported. By using accurate high-temperature high-pressure sound velocities measured at Hugoniot states generated by shock-waves, together with first-principles calculations, we observe not only the prominent compression-induced sound velocity reduction, but also strong heating-induced sound velocity enhancement, in shocked vanadium. The former corresponds to the softening in shear modulus by compression, whereas the latter reflects the reverse hardening by heat. These experiments also unveil another anomaly in Young's modulus that wasn't reported before. Based on the experimental and theoretical data, we infer that vanadium might transition from BCC into two different rhombohedral (RH1 and RH2) phases at about 79GPa and 116GPa along the Hugoniot, respectively, which implies a dramatic difference in static and dynamic loading, as well as the significance of deviatoric stress and rate-relevant effects in high-pressure phase transition dynamics., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures, with Supplementary Material

Electrides are an emerging class of materials with excess electrons localized in interstices and acting as anionic interstitial quasi-atoms (ISQs). The spatial ion-electron separation means that electrides can be treated physically as ionic crystals, and this unusual behavior leads to extraordinary physical and chemical phenomena. Here, a completely different effect in electrides is predicted. By recognizing the long-range Coulomb interactions between matrix atoms and ISQs that are unique in electrides, a nonanalytic correction to the forces exerted on matrix atoms is proposed. This correction gives rise to an LA-TA splitting in the acoustic branch of lattice phonons near the zone center, similar to the well-known LO-TO splitting in the phonon spectra of ionic compounds. The factors that govern this splitting are investigated, with isotropic fcc-Li and anisotropic hP4-Na as the typical examples. It is found that not all electrides can induce a detectable splitting, and criteria are given for this type of splitting. Electrides are an emerging class of materials with highly-localized electrons in the interstices of a crystal that behave as anions. The presence of these unusual interstitial quasi-atom (ISQ) electrons leads to interesting physical and chemical properties, and wide potential applications for this new class of materials. Crystal defects often have a crucial influence on the properties of materials. Introducing impurities has been proved to be an effective approach to improve the properties of a material and to expand its applications. However, the interactions between the anionic ISQs and the crystal defects in electrides are as yet unknown. Here, dense FCC-Li was employed as an archetype to explore the interplay between anionic ISQs and interstitial impurity atoms in this electride. This work reveals a strong coupling among the interstitial impurity atoms, the ISQs, and the matrix Li atoms near to the defects. This complex interplay and interaction mainly manifest as the unexpected tetrahedral interstitial occupation of impurity atoms and the enhancement of electron localization in the interstices. Moreover, the Be impurity occupying the octahedral interstice shows the highest negative charge state (Be8-) discovered thus far. These results demonstrate the rich chemistry and physics of this emerging material, and provide a new basis for enriching their variants for a wide range of applications., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures

Coherent light sources in silicon photonics are the long-sought holy grail because silicon-based materials have indirect bandgap. Traditional strategies for realizing such sources, e.g., heterogeneous photonic integration, strain engineering and nonlinear process, are technologically demanding. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid lasing device composing of perovskite nanocrystals and silicon nitride nanobeam cavity. We fabricate SiN photonic crystal naonobeam cavities on a solid substrate with significantly improved thermal and mechanical stabilities compared to conventional suspended ones. In addition, adding a PMMA-encapsulation layer on top of the SiN can significantly boost the Q-factor of the cavity mode. By dispersing perovskite nanocrystals as emitters in the PMMA layer, we obtained high-performance coherent emissions in terms of lasing threshold, linewidth and mode volumes. Our work offers a compelling way of creating solution-processed active integrated photonic devices based on the mature platform of silicon photonics for applications in optical information science and photonic quantum technology.

The properties of hydrogen at high pressure have wide implications in astrophysics and high-pressure physics. Its phase change in the liquid is variously described as a metallization, H2-dissociation, density discontinuity or plasma phase transition. It has been tacitly assumed that these phenomena coincide at a first-order liquid-liquid transition (LLT). In this work, the relevant pressure-temperature conditions are thoroughly explored with first-principles molecular dynamics. We show there is a large dependency on exchange-correlation functional and significant finite size effects. We use hysteresis in a number of measurable quantities to demonstrate a first-order transition up to a critical point, above which molecular and atomic liquids are indistinguishable. At higher temperature beyond the critical point, H2-dissociation becomes a smooth cross-over in the supercritical region that can be modelled by a pseudo-transition, where the H2-2H transformation is localized and does not cause a density discontinuity at metallization. Thermodynamic anomalies and counter-intuitive transport behavior of protons are also discovered even far beyond the critical point, making this dissociative transition highly relevant to the interior dynamics of Jovian planets. Below the critical point, simulation also reveals a dynamic H2-2H chemical equilibrium with rapid interconversion, showing that H2 and H are miscible. The predicted critical temperature lies well below the ionization temperature. Pressure significantly modifies the microscopic interactions in condense phase, leading to new patterns of bonding and unconventional chemistry. Both argon and xenon possess closed-shell electronic structures, which renders them chemically unreactive. Using unbiased structure searching techniques combined with first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the reaction of argon with xenon at a pressure as low as 1.1 GPa, producing a novel van der Waals compound XeAr2, which crystallizes in the MgCu2-type Laves phase structure. Due to the pressure-induced delocalization of the electrons in outermost shells, the covalent Xe-Xe and Xe-Ar bonds have been detected which lead XeAr2 to be unexpectedly stable without any phase transition or decomposition at least up to 500 GPa., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

It is believed that the density functional theory (DFT) describes most elements with s, p and d orbitals very well, except some materials that having strongly localized and correlated valence electrons. In this work, we find that the widely employed exchange-correlation (xc) functionals, including LDA, GGA and meta-GGA, underestimate the shear modulus and phase stability of V and Nb greatly. The advanced hybrid functional that is usually better for correlated system, on the other hand, completely fails in these two simple metals. This striking failure is revealed due to the orbital localization error in GGA, which is further deteriorated by hybrid functionals. This observation is corroborated by a similar failure of DFT+U and van der Waals functionals when applied to V and Nb. To remedy this problem, an semi-empirical approach of DFT+J is proposed which can delocalize electrons by facilitating the on-site exchange. Furthermore, it is observed that including density derivatives slightly improves the performance of the semi-local functionals, with meta-GGA outperforms GGA, and the latter is better than LDA. This discovery indicates the possibility and necessity to include higher-order density derivatives beyond the Laplacian level for the purpose to remove the orbital localization error (mainly from d orbitals) and delocalization error (mainly from s and p orbitals) completely in V and Nb, so that to achieve a better description of their electronic structures. The metal-semiconductor-metal transition in dense lithium is considered as an archetype of interplay between interstitial electron localization and delocalization induced by compression, which leads to exotic electride phases. In this work, the dynamic dielectric response and optical properties of the high-pressure electride phases of cI16, oC40 and oC24 in lithium spanning a wide pressure range from 40 to 200 GPa by first-principles calculations are reported. Both interband and intraband contribution to the dielectric function are deliberately treated with the linear response theory. One intraband and two interband plasmons in cI16 at 70 GPa induced by a structural distortion at 2.1, 4.1, and 7.7 eV are discovered, which make the reflectivity of this weak metallic phase abnormally lower than the insulating phase oC40 at the corresponding frequencies. More strikingly, oC24 as a reentrant metallic phase with higher conductivity becomes more transparent than oC40 in infrared and visible light range due to its unique electronic structure around Fermi surface. An intriguing reflectivity anisotropy in both oC40 and oC24 is predicted, with the former being strong enough for experimental detection within the spectrum up to 10 eV. Niobium does not show any structure transition up to very high pressures. Nonetheless, by using density functional theory, we demonstrate in this work that it exhibits striking softening in elastic moduli C44 and C' at a pressure from 20 to 150 GPa. A novel anomaly softening in C44 from 275 to 400 GPa is also predicted. The physics behind these two anomalies is elaborated by electronic structure calculations, which revealed that they are actually different, with the first one directly relates to an underlying rhombohedral distortion whereas the latter originates in an electronic topological transition. The large magnitude of the softening leads to a remarkable elastic anisotropy in both the shear and the Young's moduli of Nb. Further investigation shows that thermo-electrons have an important role on these anomalies. This effect has not been noticed before. With increased electronic temperature, it is found that all anomalies (both the elastic softening and anisotropy) in Nb are gradually diminished, effectively giving rise to a temperature-induced hardening phenomenon., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures

The application of high pressure can fundamentally modify the crystalline and electronic structures of elements as well as their chemical reactivity, which could lead to the formation of novel materials. Here, we explore the reactivity of lithium with sodium under high pressure, using a swarm structure searching techniques combined with first-principles calculations, which identify a thermodynamically stable LiNa compound adopting an orthorhombic oP8 phase at pressure above 355 GPa. The formation of LiNa may be a consequence of strong concentration of electrons transfer from the lithium and the sodium atoms into the interstitial sites, which also leads to opening a relatively wide band gap for LiNa-op8. This is substantially different from the picture that share or exchange electrons in common compounds and alloys. Hydrogen-rich compounds are important for understanding the dissociation of dense molecular hydrogen, as well as searching for room temperature Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors. A recent high pressure experiment reported the successful synthesis of novel insulating lithium polyhydrides when above 130 GPa. However, the results are in sharp contrast to previous theoretical prediction by PBE functional that around this pressure range all lithium polyhydrides (LiHn (n = 2-8)) should be metallic. In order to address this discrepancy, we perform unbiased structure search with first principles calculation by including the van der Waals interaction that was ignored in previous prediction to predict the high pressure stable structures of LiHn (n = 2-11, 13) up to 200 GPa. We reproduce the previously predicted structures, and further find novel compositions that adopt more stable structures. The van der Waals functional (vdW-DF) significantly alters the relative stability of lithium polyhydrides, and predicts that the stable stoichiometries for the ground-state should be LiH2 and LiH9 at 130-170 GPa, and LiH2, LiH8 and LiH10 at 180-200 GPa. Accurate electronic structure calculation with GW approximation indicates that LiH, LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are insulative up to at least 208 GPa, and all other lithium polyhydrides are metallic. The calculated vibron frequencies of these insulating phases are also in accordance with the experimental infrared (IR) data. This reconciliation with the experimental observation suggests that LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are the possible candidates for lithium polyhydrides synthesized in that experiment. Our results reinstate the credibility of density functional theory in description H-rich compounds, and demonstrate the importance of considering van der Waals interaction in this class of materials., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures

Solid rigidity and liquid-scale mobility are thought incompatible in elemental substances. One cannot have an elemental solid that is long-range positionally ordered wherein the atoms flow like in a liquid simultaneously. The only exception might be the hypothetical supersolid state of 4He. In this work, we demonstrate that such exotic state could exist even in the classical regime. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and ab initio path integral molecular dynamics (AI-PIMD), a novel state of dense hydrogen which simultaneously has both long-range spatial ordering and liquid-scale atomic mobility is discovered at 1~1.5 TPa (1 TPa=10000000 atmospheric pressures). The features distinct from a normal solid and liquid are carefully characterized, with the stability and melting behavior are investigated. Extensive AI-PIMD simulations further revealed that this state might be (meta-)stable even at ultra-low temperatures, suggesting an emerging candidate for an alternative type of supersolid state in dense metallic hydrogen., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures
