8. Neutrophil Targeting Platform Reduces Neutrophil Extracellular Traps for Improved Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke Theranostics.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and stroke are major causes of morbidity and mortality in both developing and developed countries. The complex and heterogeneous pathophysiology of TBI and cerebral ischemia‐reperfusion injury (CIRI), in addition to the blood‐brain barrier (BBB) resistance, is a major barrier to the advancement of diagnostics and therapeutics. Clinical data showed that the severity of TBI and stroke is positively correlated with the number of neutrophils in peripheral blood and brain injury sites. Furthermore, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) released by neutrophils correlate with worse TBI and stroke outcomes by impairing revascularization and vascular remodeling. Therefore, targeting neutrophils to deliver NETs inhibitors to brain injury sites and reduce the formation of NETs can be an optimal strategy for TBI and stroke therapy. Herein, the study designs and synthesizes a reactive oxygen species (ROS)‐responsive neutrophil‐targeting delivery system loaded with peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) inhibitor, GSK484, to prevent the formation of NETs in brain injury sites, which significantly inhibited neuroinflammation and improved neurological deficits, and improved the survival rate of TBI and CIRI. Abstract

Tunable optical transitions in ultrathin layered 2-dimensional (2D) materials unveil the electronic structures of materials and provide exciting prospects for potential applications in optics and photonics. Here, we present our realization of dynamic optical modulation of layered metal chalcogenide nanoplates using ionic liquid (IL) gating over a wide spectral range. The IL gating significantly increased the tuning range of the Fermi level and, as a result, substantially altered the optical transitions in the nanoplates. Using heavily n-doped Bi2Se3 nanoplates, we substantially modulated the light transmission through the ultrathin layer. A tunable, high-transmission spectral window in the visible to near-infrared region has been observed due to simultaneous shifts of both the plasma edge and absorption edge of the material. On the other hand, optical response of multilayer MoSe2 flakes gated by IL has shown enhanced transmission in both positive and negative biases, which is consistent with their ambipolar electrical behavior. The electrically controlled optical property tuning in metal chalcogenide material systems provides new opportunities for potential applications, such as wide spectral range optical modulators, optical filters, and electrically controlled smart windows with extremely low material consumption.

15. Lateral heterojunctions within monolayer semiconductors

Abstract

Heterojunctions between three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors with different bandgaps are the basis of modern light-emitting diodes, diode lasers, and high-speed transistors. Creating analogous heterojunctions between different two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors would enable band engineering within the 2D plane and open up new realms in materials science, device physics and engineering. Here we demonstrate that seamless high-quality in-plane heterojunctions can be grown between the 2D monolayer semiconductors MoSe2 and WSe2. The junctions, grown by lateral hetero-epitaxy using physical vapor transport, are visible in an optical microscope and show enhanced photoluminescence. Atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy reveals that their structure is an undistorted honeycomb lattice in which substitution of one transition metal by another occurs across the interface. The growth of such lateral junctions will allow new device functionalities, such as in-plane transistors and diodes, to be integrated within a single atomically thin layer., Comment: 14 pages manuscript + 12 pages supplementary information

Abstract

First-order phase transitions in solids are notoriously challenging to study. The combination of change in unit cell shape, long range of elastic distortion, and flow of latent heat leads to large energy barriers resulting in domain structure, hysteresis, and cracking. The situation is still worse near a triple point where more than two phases are involved. The famous metal-insulator transition (MIT) in vanadium dioxide, a popular candidate for ultrafast optical and electrical switching applications, is a case in point. Even though VO2 is one of the simplest strongly correlated materials, experimental difficulties posed by the first-order nature of the MIT as well as the involvement of at least two competing insulating phases have led to persistent controversy about its nature. Here, we show that studying single-crystal VO2 nanobeams in a purpose-built nanomechanical strain apparatus allows investigation of this prototypical phase transition with unprecedented control and precision. Our results include the striking finding that the triple point of the metallic and two insulating phases is at the transition temperature, T_tr = T_c, which we determine to be 65.0 +- 0.1 C. The findings have profound implications for the mechanism of the MIT in VO2, but in addition they demonstrate the importance of such an approach for mastering phase transitions in many other strongly correlated materials, such as manganites and iron-based superconductors., Comment: 15 pages including figures and supplementary information

Abstract

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are atomically thin direct-gap semiconductors with potential applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, and electrochemical sensing. Recent theoretical and experimental efforts suggest that they are ideal systems for exploiting the valley degrees of freedom of Bloch electrons. For example, Dirac valley polarization has been demonstrated in mechanically exfoliated monolayer MoS2 samples by polarization-resolved photoluminescence, although polarization has rarely been seen at room temperature. Here we report a new method for synthesizing high optical quality monolayer MoS2 single crystals up to 25 microns in size on a variety of standard insulating substrates (SiO2, sapphire and glass) using a catalyst-free vapor-solid growth mechanism. The technique is simple and reliable, and the optical quality of the crystals is extremely high, as demonstrated by the fact that the valley polarization approaches unity at 30 K and persists at 35% even at room temperature, suggesting a virtual absence of defects. 21. Prevalence of malocclusion in deciduous teeth among preschool children in Kunming

Abstract

Objective To investigate the prevalence of malocclusion in primary dentition among preschool chil⁃ dren in Kunming. To analysze the relationship between malocclusion and oral bad habits, genetic factors and the caries prevalence in preschool children. Methods According to economic conditions and distribution area of Kunming school, a total of 2 116 preschool children from nine kindergarten in Kunming city were surveyed. Oral examniation of 2 116 preschool children were conducted by trained dentists to investigate the prevalence of malocclusion and the preva⁃ lence of dental caries in Kunming. A self⁃designed questionnaire was used to investigate the oral habits and genetic fac⁃ tors of the children in the study and to analyze the correlation between malocclusion and oral bad habits, genetic factors and caries rate of deciduous teeth. Results Among the 2 116 preschool children examined, 1 516 were malocclusion, the prevalence of malocclusion was 71.64%, and the rate of dental caries was 63.50%. Bad habits and genetic factors were the risk factors of malocclusion, and there was no statistical difference in the prevalence of malocclusion between the tested children and those with or without caries. Conclusion The prevalence of malocclusion in the preschool chil⁃ dren in Kunming city is high. The dentist is required to do the work of preventing bad habits. Parents need to improve the awareness of oral health care, together to do the early diagnosis of malocclusion, early diagnosis, early treatment.

30. Studies of a novel bone-targeted nano drug delivery system with a HAP core-PSI coating structure for tanshinol injection

Abstract

Tanshinol (Tan) has good therapeutic effects on osteoporosis, fracture, and bone trauma repair. However, it is easily oxidised, has low bioavailability and a short half-life. To solve these problems, the study aimed to develop a novel bone-targeted nano-sustained-release drug delivery system PSI-HAPs for the systemic administration of Tan. This proposed system has hydroxyapatite (HAP) as the core to load drug and polysuccinimide (PSI), PEG-PSI (Polyethylene glycol, PEG), and ALN-PEG-PSI (Alendronate sodium, ALN) as the coating materials to form nanoparticles. The article examines the various PSI-HAPs’ entrapping efficiency (EE, %), drug loading capacity (DLC, %), and distribution to determine the best PSI-HAP formulation in vivo. The in vivo experiment showed that the ALN-PEG-PSI-HAP (ALN-PEG/PSI molar ratio = 1:20) was the best preparation due to its higher distribution on bone (120 h) and lower distribution in the other tissues. The determined preparation was a uniformly spherical or sphere-like nanoparticle with a negative zeta potential. Additionally, it exhibited pH-sensitive drug release in PBS based on an in vitro drug release test. The proposed PSI-HAP preparations were prepared in the water solution using a facile preparation process without ultrasound, heating, and other conditions, which can significantly affect the stability of drugs.
