2. Formulating Semantics of Probabilistic Argumentation by Characterizing Subgraphs: Theory and Empirical Results

Abstract

In existing literature, while approximate approaches based on Monte-Carlo simulation technique have been proposed to compute the semantics of probabilistic argumentation, how to improve the efficiency of computation without using simulation technique is still an open problem. In this paper, we address this problem from the following two perspectives. First, conceptually, we define specific properties to characterize the subgraphs of a PrAG with respect to a given extension, such that the probability of a set of arguments E being an extension can be defined in terms of these properties, without (or with less) construction of subgraphs. Second, computationally, we take preferred semantics as an example, and develop algorithms to evaluate the efficiency of our approach. The results show that our approach not only dramatically decreases the time for computing p(E^\sigma), but also has an attractive property, which is contrary to that of existing approaches: the denser the edges of a PrAG are or the bigger the size of a given extension E is, the more efficient our approach computes p(E^\sigma). Abstract

As a basic dimension of cognition, "time" appears frequently in human's language. And it is also an abstract concept, whose expression is highly dependent on metaphor. In literature, some metaphors for time are more novel than ordinary expressions due to the need of unique aesthetic and emotional experience. Situation Theory believes that the most important purpose of natural language is to convey information, which means despite the difference in presentation, there is no obvious difference between novel metaphorical expressions and ordinary metaphorical expressions. Dased on situation Theory, those metaphors for time in literature can be restored to several basic infons. 38. Computing the Extensions of an Argumentation Framework Based on Its Strongly Connected Components.

Abstract

Currently, only some argumentation frameworks (AFs) with special topologies have been identified as tractable classes. By taking advantage of the tractability of some parts of a general AF, this paper proposes a method to compute the extensions of an AF based on its strongly connected components (SCCs). In this method, an AF is partitioned into a set of sub frameworks (by a linear time algorithm) according to its SCCs. Under an argumentation semantics that satisfies the criterion of directionality, sets of extensions of all sub-frameworks can be computed locally, and combined incrementally to form the extensions of the original AF. The analysis shows that by using this method the complexity of computing the extensions of an AF may be reduced to a greater or a lesser extent, depending on the size and the topology of a dominant sub-framework of the AF, as well as the number of extensions of the AF. Abstract

In various argumentation systems, under most of situations, only the status of some arguments of the systems should be evaluated, while that of others is not necessary to be figured out. Based on this observation, we first introduce an efficient method to evaluate the status of a part of arguments in an abstract argumentation framework (AF). Given an AF and a subset of arguments within it, the minimal set of arguments that are relevant to this subset (called the set of relevant arguments of the subset) is identified. Under a semantics satisfying the directionality criterion, the set of extensions of the sub-framework induced by the set of relevant arguments of the given subset (called a partial semantics of the AF with respect to this subset) can be evaluated locally. Then, we introduce three basic properties of the partial semantics of argumentation: monotonicity, extensibility and combinability, which lay a foundation for developing efficient algorithms for the status evaluation of a part of arguments in an AF. Finally, we conduct an empirical investigation on the properties of computing the partial semantics of argumentation using answer-set programming. Abstract

In a subjective motion expressions motion verb is used to depict an inherently static scene. This special use of motion verbs has been one of the research focuses in Cognitive Linguistics during the past two or three decades. However, research on subjective motion, in terms of both theoretical and empirical study, still has a lot of room for development. In the field of Chinese linguistics, there has been no systemic and comprehensive study on Chinese subjective motion expressions until now. In view of this situation, and taking the perspective of cognitive linguistics, this paper examines the cognitive motivation behind the formation of subjective motion and the coding process of subjective motion expressions. First of all, by drawing on conceptual integration theory and motion event theory, we start from meaning making and analyze the cognitive motivation behind subjective motion and its linguistic structure. In the analysis, we have found that conceptual integration, conceptual metonymy and Gestalt psychology play an important part in the formation and linguistic realization of subjective motion. Subjective motion, in essence, comes from the conceptual mappings between real motion and the static scene, and the cognitive operation of conceptual integration in these two input spaces. Secondly, we start from surface linguistic structures, find their characteristics and explicate the cognitive motivation behind them. The linguistic coding of subjective motion has the following features: the choice of figures (i. e. not all entities can occur as figures in a subjective motion expression), the necessity of path information (i. e. a subjective motion expression must contain information about path) and the suppression of certain manner information (i. e. not all kinds of manner information can occur in subjective motion expressions). The above three features can also be explained from a cognitive linguistic perspective. The present study has great significance for research on spatial cognition. Subjective motion expression pertains to how people cognize and express static spatial scenes. Its formation and linguistic features reveal a human being's subjective construal of spatial categories and the creativity and dynamicity of his thinking. Abstract

Pragmatic perspective theory, first proposed by the Belgium scholar Jeff Verschueren, is based on Darwin's theory of evolution. It aims to establish a unified and coherent theoretical framework to explain the fact that people are constantly making choices when using language. Seen from a pragmatic perspective, the use of metaphor is also a process of constant choice making. Through the introduction of three key related concepts of variability, negotiability and adaptability, we are better equipped to explain the production and interpretation of metaphor-the production of metaphor is a process of speaker seeking source domain based on similarity and of making adaptable judgments of the source domain in terms of its optimal relevance to the individual; and the interpretation of metaphor also requires variability, negotiability and adaptability, because the listener has to choose the optimally context-adaptive semantic interpretation.
