Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) show enormous potential as a large-scale energy storage technique. However, the growth of Zn dendrites and serious side reactions occurring at the Zn anode hinder the practical application of AZIBs. For the first time, we reported a fluorine-containing surfactant, i.e., potassium perfluoro-1-butanesulfonate (PPFBS), as an additive to the 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte. Benefitting from its hydrophilic sulfonate anion and hydrophobic long fluorocarbon chain, PPFBS can promote the uniform distribution of Zn2+ flux at the anode/electrolyte interface, allowing the Zn/Zn cell to cycle for 2200 h. Furthermore, PPFBS could inhibit side reactions due to the existence of the perfluorobutyl sulfonate (C4F9SO3−) adsorption layer and the presence of C4F9SO3− in the solvation structure of Zn2+. The former can reduce the amount of H2O molecules and SO42− in contact with the Zn anode and C4F9SO3− entering the Zn2+-solvation structure by replacing SO42−. The Zn/Cu cell exhibits a superior average CE of 99.47% over 500 cycles. When coupled with the V2O5 cathode, the full cell shows impressive cycle stability. Recent individual studies have indicated that ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption may be associated with the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on those longitudinal studies evaluating the relationship between UPF consumption and the risk of incident CKD, and synthesizing the results. PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception through 22 March 2023. Any longitudinal studies evaluating the relationship between UPF consumption and the risk of incident CKD were included. Two researchers independently conducted the literature screening and data extraction. RR and its 95% CI were regarded as the effect size. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess the quality of the studies included, and the effect of UPF consumption on the risk of incident CKD was analyzed with STATA version 15.1. This study's protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023411951). Four cohort studies with a total of 219,132 participants were included after screening. The results of the meta-analysis suggested that the highest UPF intake was associated with an increased risk of incident CKD (RR = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.18–1.33). High-dose UPF intake was associated with an increased risk of incident CKD. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. The high-temperature strength of aluminum alloys must be enhanced for improving their applicability across industries. This study proposes a machine learning approach for developing heat-resistant aluminum alloys. Using a combination of correlation-based screening and genetic algorithms, feature selection was performed on descriptors derived from the atomic compositions of alloys. Then, alloy compositions and descriptors were used as input variables of the model to improve its robustness and applicability due to the richness of information. Four distinct alloys were discovered by employing Bayesian optimization within the framework of a quaternary alloy system. The best alloy demonstrated an exceptional high-temperature strength of 175 MPa at 300 °C in the absence of heat treatment. Microstructural analyses of these alloys indicated the critical role of vanadium-rich intermetallics in enhancing the high-temperature strength of aluminum alloys. Furthermore, the output of the model was explained using the SHapley Additive exPlanations method. The findings emphasize the critical importance of titanium and vanadium in enhancing the high-temperature strength of aluminum alloys tailored for environments with high thermal stress. Seaweed has attracted great attention as a healthy and nutritious food. Traditional seaweed processing plants mainly rely on manual visual inspection to identify and remove inferior seaweed. Accurate and rapid harvest period classification and impurity detection are key to improving productivity and processing speed in seaweed processing plants. Although many studies on seaweed have been conducted in laboratory environments, currently, the plants lack effective tools to obtain real-time and reliable information on seaweed quality. To address this challenge, the deep transfer learning-based computer vision was applied to identify inferior seaweeds, including those from the third harvest, fourth harvest, and impure seaweeds in this work. Specifically, YOLOv8 and YOLOv5 were utilized as base transfer learning models. By loading various pre-trained weight files, this study was able to automatically classify Porphyra haitnensis into four categories based on the harvest period and simultaneously detect four types of common impurities in it. Among the tested models, YOLOv8n-cls achieved the best trade-off in classifying the harvest period, with a Top-1 accuracy of 93.5%. This represented a significant improvement of 16% compared to the performance without transfer learning. The detection speed for a single image was 8.2 ms, and the model size was only 2.82 Mb. On the other hand, YOLOv8n exhibited outstanding performance in impurity detection, with a mean average precision of 99.14%, a single image detection speed of 4.3 ms, and a model size of 5.95 Mb. The results demonstrated the potential of YOLOv8 with transfer learning to objectively assist or even replace decision-making by assembly line workers. Practical Application Hydrocolloids are widely used in meat products as common food additives. However, research has indicated that excessive consumption of these hydrocolloids may have potential health implications. Currently, consumers mainly rely on sensory evaluation to identify hydrocolloid adulteration in meat products. Although many studies on quantitative detection of hydrocolloids have been conducted by biochemical methods in laboratory environments, there is currently a lack of effective tools for consumers and regulators to obtain real‐time and reliable information on hydrocolloid adulteration. To address this challenge, a smartphone‐based computer vision method was developed to quantitatively detect carrageenan adulteration in beef in this work. Specifically, Swin Transformer models, along with pre‐training and fine‐tuning techniques, were used to successfully automate the classification of beef into nine different levels of carrageenan adulteration, ranging from 0% to 20%. Among the tested models, Swin‐Tiny (Swin‐T) achieved the highest trade‐off performance, with a Top‐1 accuracy of 0.997, a detection speed of 3.2 ms, and a model size of 103.45 Mb. Compared to computer vision, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy achieved a lower accuracy of 0.792 and required a constant temperature environment and a waiting time of around 30 min for data stabilization. In addition, Swin‐T model was also capable of distinguishing between different types of hydrocolloids with a Top‐1 accuracy of 0.975. This study provides consumers and regulators with a valuable tool to obtain real‐time quantitative information about meat adulteration anytime, anywhere.This research provides a practical solution for regulators and consumers to non‐destructively and quantitatively detect the content and type of hydrocolloids in beef in real‐time using smartphones. A poisoning effect of scandium (Sc) with respect to Al-5Ti-1B (in wt.%) grain refiner was investigated for the first time. Grain refinement effect of Al-5Ti-1B was found to fade in Al alloys with content of trace Sc. The modification of TiB 2 particle by inward diffusion of Sc was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). Through Geometric Phase Analysis (GPA) analysis, a notable increase of stress concentration at (0001) plane of Sc-modified TiB 2 was revealed, the result of which shed lights on the mechanism of Sc poisoning effect. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (A-MSCs) are promising cellular therapies for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases. Non-gene editing technologies can improve the immune regulatory function of A-MSCs. Our preliminary experiments revealed that an active form of vitamin B6—pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (PLP)—plays an important role in regulating gene expression and cytokine secretion in A-MSCs in vivo. To further clarify the effect of PLP on receptors and cytokines related to the immune regulatory function of A-MSCs, a series of experiments were designed to verify the relationships between PLP and A-MSCs in vitro. Initially, A-MSCs were obtained, and cytokine secretion and the expression of IDO1, NF-κB, and Toll-like receptors in PLP-stimulated A-MSCs were evaluated. In addition, coculture was used to detect A-MSCs-mediated apoptosis of CD3+CD8+ T lymphocytes. These results showed that A-MSCs stimulated with PLP were highly proliferative, consistent with their pluripotent capacity. Further, the surface receptors TLR3, TLR4, IDO1, and NF-κB were upregulated, while TLR6 was downregulated. Concurrently, A-MSCs preconditioned with PLP had the greatest inhibitory effect on CD3+CD8+ T lymphocyte proliferation, indicating that PLP altered the immune regulatory function of A-MSCs through the regulation of TLRs and IDO1 expression. Purpose: The purpose of the article is to investigate the contribution of calprotectin and factors in toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor-κB/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (TLR4/NF-κB/MyD88) pathway in patients with idiopathic acute anterior uveitis (IAAU). Methods: In total, 72 patients with IAAU and 56 healthy individuals were enrolled. Serum calprotectin, TLR-4, and MyD88 were determined. Best-corrected visual acuity, uveitis activity grading, and macular thickness measured by optical coherence tomography were performed. Results: Serum calprotectin, TLR4, and MyD88 levels were higher in IAAU group than those in healthy individuals. Serum calprotectin level was positively correlated with uveitis activity grading and macular thickness. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed serum calprotectin had larger area under curve than serum TLR4 and MyD88. Conclusions: The calprotectin and TLR4/NF-κB/MyD88 signal might contribute to the pathogenesis of IAAU and serum calprotectin might be a specific biomarker for the measurement of ocular inflammation in IAAU. It has been controversial whether ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) are separate or different phases of radiographic progression. We determined that serum calprotectin level (ng/ml) was higher in AS (15.30 ± 6.49) and nr-axSpA (17.76 ± 8.59) patients than in healthy individuals (7.40 ± 2.67). No difference was observed in calprotectin level between these two groups. Elevated calprotectin was positively correlated with ESR, CRP, BASDAI, and ASDAS as well as SPARCC scoring and had no correlation with BASFI and mSASSS. No correlation was observed between calprotectin and Wnt/β-catenin pathway markers. Serum calprotectin can be used as a marker for inflammation in both nr-axSpA and AS, while it does not contribute to the discrimination of AS and nr-axSpA. Calprotectin-mediated inflammation was not correlated with principle effectors of Wnt/β-catenin pathway, indicating that inflammation and bone fusion might be separate processes of the disease. This was an exploratory analysis comparing the safety and efficacy of immunoadsorption (IAS) combination therapy in severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) receiving corticosteroid pulse and immunosuppressant treatment. Patients enrolled all had predominant organ involvement including proteinuria, thrombocytopenia, pericardial effusion, and cerebral involvement requiring corticosteroid pulse treatment. Fifty-two patients in study group received IAS plus corticosteroid and cyclophosphamide treatment. Fifty-two patients in non-IAS group received corticosteroid and cyclophosphamide treatment. Outcome measurement included C3, dsDNA, AnuA, and SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) 2k score and in particular cases, proteinuria quantification and platelet count. Disease activity dropped significantly in both groups. Improvement of disease activity markers was more significant in study group than that in non-IAS group. The lower dosage of steroid in study group suggested the steroid-sparing effect of IAS. No severe adverse effect occurred during IAS. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis and anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease are two separate diseases, while sometimes they can coexist together. The exact mechanisms are not clear, but due to the rapid progression and poor prognosis, prompt and aggressive treatment is usually required. We treated with steroids combined with cyclophosphamide and rituximab an 84-year-old man with ANCA-associated vasculitis and anti-GBM disease who had prior pulmonary fibrosis and a coexisting anterosuperior mediastinal mass. Conventional therapy including steroids, plasmapheresis and cyclophosphamide failed to attenuate the anti-GBM disease, yet he responded to an alternative treatment of rituximab. Aims Short-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (SCAD) is a key enzyme in fatty acid oxidation. In the present study we aim to investigate the changes in SCAD between pathological and physiological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. We also explore the different signaling pathways of pathological and physiological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Main methods After neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were treated as setups, cell surface area, expression of SCAD, PPARα, phospho-ERK1/2, activity of SCAD, free fatty acid content and ATP content in the cardiomyocytes were measured. Key findings Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes treated by PE showed an increased cell surface area and free fatty acid content, increased ERK1/2 phosphorylation, decreased expression of PPARα, decreased expression and activity of SCAD and decreased levels of ATP. Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes treated by IGF-1 showed the reverse effects except for the cell surface area. PPARα inhibitor GW6471 and PPARα activator Fenofibrate treatments abrogated the effects induced by IGF-1 and PE in cardiomyocytes respectively, as well as ERK1/2 activator EGF and ERK1/2 inhibitor PD98059. Significance SCAD has different changes between pathological and physiological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. The ERK1/2/PPARα/SCAD signaling pathways play different roles in pathological and physiological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Objectives. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by new bone formation. Recent evidence suggests that new bone formation in AS may be due to upregulation of Wnt signaling in the osteoblastic pathway secondary to low serum Dickkopf homolog 1 (Dkk-1) levels. And miR-29a orchestrates osteoblast differentiation through direct targeting and negative regulation of Dkk-1. Methods. We initially validated the expression levels of miR-29a in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of AS patients ( n = 30), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients ( n = 30) and healthy controls ( n = 30) using real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Correlation analysis was assessed between miR-29a level in PBMCs of AS patients and disease activity indexes, including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI), Bath ankylosing spondylitis function index (BASFI) and modified Stoke ankylosing spondylitis spinal score (mSASSS). Results. Significantly higher expression of miR-29a was observed in PBMCs of AS patients (Ct 9.18 ± 1.96) compared with that in RA patients (10.97 ± 0.70, p < 0.001) and healthy controls (Ct 11.45 ± 1.23, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between RA patients and healthy controls in miR-29a expression ( p > 0.05). Elevated miR-29a expression is not correlated with disease activity index ( p > 0.05). A weak correlation was found between elevated miR-29a expression and mSASSS ( r = −0.393, p = 0.032). Conclusions. We report for the first time elevated miR-29a expression in PBMCs of patients with ankylosing spondylitis, and miR-29a might be used as a useful diagnostic marker in new bone formation but cannot reflect disease activity. This case report discusses a female patient with axial spondyloarthritis (AS) who developed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) after being treated with secukinumab (SEC), an interleukin-17 inhibitor. The patient had a family history of AS and psoriasis, and her symptoms worsened after starting SEC treatment. She experienced upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal bleeding. The report highlights the association between SEC and the exacerbation of gastrointestinal symptoms leading to IBD. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS; MIM 106300) is a common rheumatic disease with strong genetic components affecting approximately 0.3% of the population. The exact genetic mechanism of AS remains elusive. Our previous study showed that AS could be transmitted in an autosomal dominant inheritance mode and a 6-cM candidate region located on the chromosome 2q36.1-36.3 was mapped in a Chinese family. Mutation screening was conducted within the candidate region in the family and other AS by sequencing, and the novel mutation will be further validated in other AS families, sporadic cases and healthy controls by mass spectrometry. We identified a rare non-synonymous mutation (Arg580Gly) in insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) co-segregated with disease phenotype in patients of the family, which was not found in other AS families, sporadic patients and healthy controls. In the study, we found a rare non-synonymous mutation in IRS1 co-segregation in one Chinese family with AS, which indicated a new candidate disease causative gene for AS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Development of anode materials with high performance is crucial for the successful application of Na-ion batteries. In this study, we provide a novel type of conversion-type anode materials, transition metal borates, as promising candidates for Na-ion storage. The transition metal borates (Fe 3 BO 5 and Ni 3 (BO 3) 2) are successfully fabricated by a facile sol-gel route. When they are firstly evaluated for Na-ion storage, they deliver remarkably better Na-ion insertion kinetics and high reversible capacity than transition metal oxides. It's notable that the conversion reaction can be thoroughly realized for transition metal borates during sodiation/desodiation process accompanying with the change of B-O coordination. First-principles calculation indicates that Na insertion into transition metal borate are energetically much more favorable compared with transition metal oxides. Furthermore, carbon coated borates are designed and firstly prepared, which exhibit good rate capability and excellent cycling stability. Moreover, the Fe 3 BO 5 /Na 2 V 3 (PO 4) 2 F 3 full cell exhibits a high energy density of 180.3 Wh kg−1 at a high power density of 150.1 W kg−1.
