12. Highly Permeable and Fouling-Resistant Polyamide Nanofiltration Membranes with Embedded Boron Nitride Nanosheets for the Purification of Water.

Abstract

Permeance and fouling are crucial factors restricting the development and application of polymeric nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Introducing nanomaterials into the polyamide (PA) layer is believed to be capable of effectively enhancing the permeance and fouling resistance. In this work, we fabricated a high-permeance thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) NF membrane with preeminent fouling resistance using in situ interfacial polymerization (IP). During this process, different amounts of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) were incorporated into piperazine (PIP) aqueous solution to react with trimesoyl chloride (TMC). Due to the reduced diffusion rate of PIP, the obtained TFN-3 membrane presents a PA layer of diminished thickness (∼39.53 nm) and wrinkled structure, which is beneficial for improving the permeance of the NF membranes. As a result, The TFN-3 membrane exhibits a superior pure water flux of 96.28 L m–2 h–1 while maintaining high Na2SO4 rejection. Especially, the TFN-3 membrane possesses fantastic fouling resistance and long-term stability as well. Abstract

Fibroblasts are important regulators of inflammation, but whether fibroblasts change phenotype during resolution of inflammation is not clear. Here we use positron emission tomography to detect fibroblast activation protein (FAP) as a means to visualize fibroblast activation in vivo during inflammation in humans. While tracer accumulation is high in active arthritis, it decreases after tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-17A inhibition. Biopsy-based single-cell RNA-sequencing analyses in experimental arthritis show that FAP signal reduction reflects a phenotypic switch from pro-inflammatory MMP3+/IL6+fibroblasts (high FAP internalization) to pro-resolving CD200+DKK3+fibroblasts (low FAP internalization). Spatial transcriptomics of human joints indicates that pro-resolving niches of CD200+DKK3+fibroblasts cluster with type 2 innate lymphoid cells, whereas MMP3+/IL6+fibroblasts colocalize with inflammatory immune cells. CD200+DKK3+fibroblasts stabilized the type 2 innate lymphoid cell phenotype and induced resolution of arthritis via CD200–CD200R1 signaling. Taken together, these data suggest a dynamic molecular regulation of the mesenchymal compartment during resolution of inflammation.

32. Immunomodulatory effect of Atractylodis macrocephala Koidz.polysaccharides in vitro

Abstract

Vaccination is still the main method of preventing most infectious diseases, but there are inefficiencies and inaccuracies in immunization. Studies have reported that Atractylodis macrocephalae Koidz.polysaccharides (RAMP) have immunomodulatory effects, but the mechanisms involved in whether they can modulate the immune response in chickens are not yet clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of RAMP on lymphocytes functions by analyzing cell proliferation, cell cycle, mRNA expression of cytokines and CD4 +/CD8 + ratio. To identify potential molecules involved in immune regulation, we performed a comprehensive transcriptome profiling of chicken lymphocytes. In addition, the adjuvant effect of RAMP was evaluated by detecting indicators of hemagglutination inhibition. When lymphocytes were cultured with RAMP in vitro, the proliferation rate of lymphocytes was increased (P< 0.01), more cells in S phase and G2/M phase (P< 0.01) and the mRNA expression of IFN-γwas upregulated (P< 0.05), while the mRNA expression of TGF-β(P< 0.01) and IL-4(P< 0.05) was downregulated and the CD4 +/CD8 + ratio was increased (P< 0.05). Transcriptomic results showed that RAMP increased the expression of HIST1H46(P< 0.05) and CENPP(P< 0.05). Validation of qPCR showed that RAMP may play an important role in regulating cellular immunity by downregulating the Notch pathway. The results also showed that RAMP could increase the serum Newcastle disease virus antibody levels in chickens. These data suggest that RAMP could enhance immune function of lymphocytes and was a candidate vaccine adjuvant in chickens.

33. Salting-Out Effect Protected Ball-Milling Exfoliation of Hexagonal Boron Nitride and the Scale Laws on the Thermal Conductivities of the Exfoliated Nanosheet Assembled Composite Films

Abstract

Herein, we discovered that using the mixed aqueous solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as ball-milling medium of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) could exfoliate larger lateral size boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) than using HEC solution alone due to the salting-out effects of Na+to HEC that aggregated the polymer molecules and in turn enhanced the impact resistance to milling balls. Through centrifugal separation and reduced ball-to-h-BN ratios, different lateral size BNNSs were obtained and further assembled into films with aramid nanofibers (ANFs) to investigate their thermal conduction performances. The results indicated that the larger lateral size BNNS-based films show higher thermal conductivities (TCs) owing to the reduced phonon scattering at boundaries, but BNNSs with overlarge lateral sizes are difficult to be stacked into compact microstructures and in turn result in the much lowered TC for the assembled film. Meanwhile, the interfacial interactions and BNNS defects also have some influences on TCs of the composites. Overall, this study provides a novel route to the fabrication of large-area BNNSs and reveals their scale laws on thermal conduction, and the fabricated ANF/BNNS heat spreader has a high TC of 31.88 W·m–1·K–1, which is promising for use in thermal management of high-power electronic devices and batteries.
