Abstract  We report an LD-end-pumped linearly-polarized continuous-wave (CW) Nd:YAP laser operating at 1341.4 nm. Making use of the plane-concave resonator (T = 2.4%) and the plane-plane resonator (T = 2.6%), we obtain linearly-polarized laser radiation at 1341.4 nm with a power of 3.15 and 2.86 W and corresponding optical slope efficiency of 18.4 and 17.5%, respectively. The effect of the laser oscillation mode on the output is analyzed. An experiment on the intra-cavity frequency doubling with an LBO crystal has been performed, and a laser power of 431 mW in one direction at 670.7 nm was obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-sized crystals of the quaternary iodate NaVO 2 (IO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) (NVIO) with centimeter-scale dimensions (23 mm × 18 mm × 6 mm as a representative) have been successfully grown by the top-seeded hydrothermal method. Linear optical properties have been measured, including the optical transmission spectrum and refractive index. The NVIO crystal possesses an optical window with high transmittance (above 80%) over the range of 500-1410 nm and exhibits strong optical anisotropy with large birefringence Δ n ( n z - n x ) of 0.1522 at 1064 nm and 0.1720 at 532 nm. Based on the measured refractive indices, the phase-matching conditions for second-harmonic generation (SHG) have been calculated, and SHG devices have further been fabricated along the calculated type I and type II phase-matching directions of (θ = 39.0°, φ = 3.8°) and (θ =53.8°, φ = 1.3°). Laser experiments of extra-cavity frequency doubling have been performed on these NVIO devices. It has been confirmed that the effective SHG conversion from 1064 to 532 nm could be achieved with an energy conversion efficiency of 8.1%. Our work demonstrates that large-sized NVIO crystals are promising in the frequency-doubling application.

Multi-spectroscopy, such as FTIR, dispersive Raman spectroscopy and UV-Vis, was applied to characterize the blue gel pen inks on paper at the time in the present study. Twenty eight collected blue gel pens with different brands and serials were separated into four different classes by different absorptions or Raman shift. Composition changing of blue gel pen inks on paper during artificial ageing was studied via TD-MS as well. The advantage and disadvantage of this spectroscopy used in analyzing and identifying blue gel pen inks on paper, and the potential application in the research on relative and absolute ageing of documents were discussed.
