Mixed valence manganites are potential functional materials due to their unique electromagnetic properties. In this work, half-doped ceramics with the perovskite structure Sm 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 polycrystalline samples are synthesized by the solid-state reaction method in open air at different final sintering temperatures. Structures and particle sizes are studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Positron annihilation spectroscopy and density-functional theory calculations are used to characterize the intrinsic vacancies in the bulk. Thereafter, the effect of vacancies on the magnetic and magnetoresistance (MR) properties is investigated. We find that Mn monovacancies (V Mn ) exist in the bulk among all the samples, and the concentration of V Mn is different. We suggest a possible defect model that can be well applied to explain the phenomena of their electromagnetic properties. The transition temperature of the charge-order state (T CO ) and ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic (T N ) are most likely related to the concentration of V Mn and the particle sizes or pore sizes, respectively. The glass spin state transition temperature seems to be independent of the defect concentration and type. The metal conductive behavior does not appear in a high magnetic field and at low temperatures, which may be caused by the presence of a high concentration of V Mn in the bulk and oxygen-related defects in the boundary, and the double exchange interaction is suppressed. At temperatures below T N and under a weak magnetic field, the MR is related to the total defect concentration. Circular E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase (circ-ITCH), a novel circRNA, is generated from several exons of itchy E3 ubiquitin protein ligase. Reports on circ-ITCH have discussed its pathogenic performance in human diseases. Based on this, this study determines whether and how circ-ITCH is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN). First, a rat model of CGN induced by cationic bovine serum albumin was established. Then, CGN rats were injected with lentiviruses interfering with the expression of circ-ITCH, miR-146a-5p or tyrosine 3-monooxygenase/tryptophan 5-monooxygenase activation protein gamma (YWHAG). Then, blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels were measured to evaluate renal function; inflammatory factor content and fibrosis marker expression in kidney tissue were detected; renal pathological damage was analyzed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and periodic acid-Schiff staining. Finally, the binding relationship between miR-146a-5p and circ-ITCH or YWHAG was verified. Elevating circ-ITCH or depleting miR-146a-5p improved renal function (both P<0.05), reduced inflammatory factor content and fibrosis marker expression (all P<0.05) and alleviated renal pathological damage in CGN rats. Circ-ITCH negatively regulated miR-146a-5p expression by adsorbing miR-146a-5p (P<0.05), and miR-146a-5p inhibited YWHAG expression by binding to the 3'-UTR of YWHAG (P<0.05). Loss of YWHAG reversed the protective effect of upregulated circ-ITCH in CGN rats (all P<0.05). We conclude that circ-ITCH improves renal function and attenuates inflammation and renal injury in rats with CGN via the miR-146a-5p/YWHAG axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The unique 4f orbitals and abundant electronic energy levels of rare earth elements enable effective doping and modification to enhance hydrogen storage performance, making it an increasingly prominent focus of research. The structures of neutral and cationic CeHn0/+ (n = 2–20) clusters have been determined using the Crystal Structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) method in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT). Interestingly, the CeH13 and CeH14+ exhibit remarkable stability in the doublet state with Cs and C2v symmetry, respectively. The adsorption energy of CeHn0/+ (n = 2–20) suggests a preference for H atoms to chemically adsorb on Ce atoms. The analysis of molecular orbital composition reveals that the stability of both CeH13 and CeH14+ is attributed to the significant hybridization between the H 1s and Ce 4f orbitals. Both CeH13 and CeH14+ demonstrate significant hydrogen storage capacities, with values reaching 8.5 wt% and 9.1 wt%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Physicians' recognition of end of life (EOL) has key influences on patients' 'good death'. Aim We aimed to study physicians' attitude toward EOL, and to analyze the relationship between physicians' assessment and patients' actual survival and the trigger effect on patient's access to palliative consultation and palliative care. Design This is a multi-center retrospective cohort study in seven community hospitals in Taiwan. Methods Inpatients admitted between 1 March 2016 and 31 December 2020, scored ≥4 points using Taiwan version-Palliative Care Screening Tool (TW-PCST), and expired before 31 December 2020 were enrolled. Physicians answered three questions regarding these inpatients: 'surprised of mortality within 6–12 months', 'EOL' and 'in need of palliative care'. We followed up patients' actual survival and access to palliative consultation and services. Results We enrolled 10 304 cases. There was high correlation among the three questions. The median survival of patients with 'not surprised of death within 6–12 months', 'EOL', and 'needing palliative care' were 68, 60 and 58 days, respectively. Those with opposite responses were 206, 166 and 186 days, respectively. Patients' main diagnosis, TW-PCST score, physicians' palliative care qualifications and reward measures were all associated with physicians' recognition of EOL. Physicians' assessment, physicians' training, disease characteristics and TW-PSCT scores were all associated with palliative consultation and palliative care. Conclusions Physicians are still over optimistic in recognizing inpatients' survival and palliative care needs. EOL talks can be initiated when the TW-PCST score is high. Deformation of AZ61-F magnesium alloys with 1 wt % of Al2O3 phase was tested at different temperatures and different strain rates. It was shown that at temperatures 473–523 K and the highest strain rate applied from 1×10–2 s–1 to 1×10–4 s–1, a significant ductility growth was observed. The grain size of 0.6–0.8 μm was reached by severe plastic deformations by means of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). Secondary Mg17Al12 and Al2O3 phases were identified. Maximum strain was gained at temperature of 473 K and strain rate of 1×10–4 s–1.
