Power system optimal dispatch with transient security constraints is commonly represented as Transient Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (TSC-OPF). Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based TSC-OPF trains efficient decision-making agents that are adaptable to various scenarios and provide solution results quickly. However, due to the high dimensionality of the state space and action spaces, as well as the non-smoothness of dynamic constraints, existing DRL-based TSC-OPF solution methods face a significant challenge of the sparse reward problem. To address this issue, a fast-converged DRL method for TSC-OPF is proposed in this paper. The Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling of TSC-OPF is improved by reducing the observation space and smoothing the reward design, thus facilitating agent training. An improved Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm with Curriculum learning, Parallel exploration, and Ensemble decision-making (DDPG-CPEn) is introduced to drastically enhance the efficiency of agent training and the accuracy of decision-making. The effectiveness, efficiency, and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through experiments in the IEEE 39-bus system and a practical 710-bus regional power grid. The oscillation phenomena associated with the control of voltage source converters (VSCs) are widely concerning, and locating the source of these oscillations is crucial to suppressing them; therefore, this paper presents a locating scheme, based on the energy structure and nonlinearity detection. On the one hand, the energy structure, which conforms with the principle of the energy-based method and dissipativity theory, is constructed to describe the transient energy flow for VSCs, and on this basis, a defined characteristic quantity is implemented to narrow the scope of oscillation source location; on the other hand, according to the self-sustained oscillation characteristics of VSCs, an index for nonlinearity detection is applied to locate the VSCs which produce the oscillation energy. The combination of the energy structure and nonlinearity detection could distinguish the contributions of different VSCs to the oscillation. The results of a case study implemented by the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation validate the proposed scheme.

The dynamic security assessment of power systems needs to scan contingencies in a preselected set through time-domain simulations. With more and more inverter-based-generation, such as wind and solar power generation, integrated into power systems, electro-magnetic transient simulation is adopted. However, the complexity of simulation will increase greatly if inverter-based-generation units are modeled in detail. In order to reduce the complexity of simulation of power systems including large-scale wind farms, it is critical to develop dynamic equivalent methods for wind farms which are applicable to the expected contingency analysis. The dynamic response characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous generator-wind turbine generators (PMSG-WTGs) are not only influenced by their control strategies, but also by the operating wind speeds and the fault severities. Thus, this paper proposes a dynamic equivalent method for PMSG-WTG based wind farms considering the wind speeds and the fault severities. Firstly, this paper analyzes all possible response characteristics of a PMSG-WTG and proposes a clustering method based on the operating wind speed and the terminal voltage of each PMSG-WTG at the end of the fault. Then, a single-machine equivalent method is introduced for each group of PMSG-WTGs. For the group of PMSG-WTGs with active power ramp recovery process, an equivalent model with segmented ramp rate limitation for active current is designed. In order to obtain the clustering indicators, a simulation-based iterative method is put forward to calculate the voltage at point of common connection (PCC) of the wind farm, and a PMSG-WTG terminal voltage calculation method is further presented. Eventually, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by the simulation results.

In the context of high penetration of renewables, the need to build dynamic models of power system components based on accessible measurement data has become urgent. To address this challenge, firstly, a neural ordinary differential equations (ODE) module and a neural differential-algebraic equations (DAE) module are proposed to form a data-driven modeling framework that accurately captures components' dynamic characteristics and flexibly adapts to various interface settings. Secondly, analytical models and data-driven models learned by the neural ODE and DAE modules are integrated together and simulated simultaneously using unified transient stability simulation methods. Finally, the neural ODE and DAE modules are implemented with Python and made public on GitHub. Using the portal measurements, three simple but representative cases of excitation controller modeling, photovoltaic power plant modeling, and equivalent load modeling of a regional power network are carried out in the IEEE-39 system and 2383wp system. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), it is foreseeable that the accuracy and efficiency of dynamic analysis for future power system will be greatly improved by the integration of dynamic simulators and AI. To explore the interaction mechanism of power system dynamic simulations and AI, a general design of an AI-oriented power system dynamic simulator is proposed, which consists of a high-performance simulator with neural network supportability and flexible external and internal application programming interfaces (APIs). With the support of APIs, simulation-assisted AI and AI-assisted simulation form a comprehensive interaction mechanism between power system dynamic simulations and AI. A prototype of this design is implemented and made public based on a highly efficient electromechanical simulator. Tests of this prototype are carried out under four scenarios including sample generation, AI-based stability prediction, data-driven dynamic component modeling, and AI-aided stability control, which prove the validity, flexibility, and efficiency of the design and implementation of the AI-oriented power system dynamic simulator., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. With the increasing computations in power system simulations, high-performance and cost-effective power system simulator is highly required. In this paper, a cloud-computing based power system simulator, namely CloudPSS, is designed. Based on an open service integrating framework, a self-developed electromagnetic transients (EMT) simulator with an automatic code generator is provided to accelerate EMT simulations using heterogeneous devices in the cloud, such as CPU and GPU. Test results show that CloudPSS can achieve significant speedups for both large-scale simulation tasks and multi-scenario tasks. Moreover, benefit from the time-sharing of cloud computing resources, the computational cost can be greatly reduced.

Building the conditional probability distribution of wind power forecast errors benefits both wind farms (WFs) and independent system operators (ISOs). Establishing the joint probability distribution of wind power and the corresponding forecast data of spatially correlated WFs is the foundation for deriving the conditional probability distribution. Traditional parameter estimation methods for probability distributions require the collection of historical data of all WFs. However, in the context of multi-regional interconnected grids, neither regional ISOs nor WFs can collect the raw data of WFs in other regions due to privacy or competition considerations. Therefore, based on the Gaussian mixture model, this paper first proposes a privacy-preserving distributed expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate the parameters of the joint probability distribution. This algorithm consists of two original methods: (1) a privacy-preserving distributed summation algorithm and (2) a privacy-preserving distributed inner product algorithm. Then, we derive each WF's conditional probability distribution of forecast error from the joint one. By the proposed algorithms, WFs only need local calculations and privacy-preserving neighboring communications to achieve the whole parameter estimation. These algorithms are verified using the wind integration data set published by the NREL.

Traditionally, a regional dispatch center uses the equivalent method to deal with external grids, which fails to reflect the interactions among regions. This paper proposes a distributed N-1 contingency analysis (DCA) solution, where dispatch centers join a coordinated computation using their private data and computing resources. A distributed screening method is presented to determine the Critical Contingency Set (DCCS) in DCA. Then, the distributed power flow is formulated as a set of boundary equations, which is solved by a Jacobi-Free Newton-GMRES (JFNG) method. During solving the distributed power flow, only boundary conditions are exchanged. Acceleration techniques are also introduced, including reusing preconditioners and optimal resource scheduling during parallel processing of multiple contingencies. In the risk assessment of cascading outages, the rationality of simulation and efficiency of computation are both of great significance. To overcome the drawback of sampling-based methods that huge computation resources are required and the shortcoming of initial contingency selection practices that the dependencies in sequences of outages are omitted, this paper proposes a novel risk assessment approach by searching on Markovian Tree. The Markovian tree model is reformulated from the quasi-dynamic multi-timescale simulation model proposed recently to ensure reasonable modeling and simulation of cascading outages. Then a tree search scheme is established to avoid duplicated simulations on same cascade paths, significantly saving computation time. To accelerate the convergence of risk assessment, a risk estimation index is proposed to guide the search for states with major contributions to the risk, and the risk assessment is realized based on the risk estimation index with a forward tree search and backward update algorithm.
