A bibliometric analysis was conducted to identify the hotspots and trends in research on electroacupuncture for pain.Methods: We retrieved studies published from 1994– 2022 on the topic of pain relief by electroacupuncture from the Web of Science Core Collection database. We comprehensively analysed the data with VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and bibliometrix. Seven aspects of the data were analysed separately: annual publication outputs, countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords and references.Results: A total of 2030 papers were analysed, and the number of worldwide publications continuously increased over the period of interest. The most productive country and institution in this field were China and KyungHee University. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most productive journal, and Pain was the most co-cited journal. Han Jisheng, Fang Jianqiao, and Lao Lixing were the most representative authors. Based on keywords and references, three active areas of research on EA for pain were mechanisms, randomized controlled trials, and perioperative applications. Three emerging trends were functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), systematic reviews, and knee osteoarthritis.Conclusion: This study comprehensively analysed the research published over the past 28 years on electroacupuncture for pain treatment, using bibliometrics and science mapping analysis. Abstract

Background: Peripheral facial paralysis (PFP) is a common peripheral neural disease. Acupuncture treatment combined with PFP rehabilitation exercises is a routine method of PFP treatment. This article is to provide a new visual and objective evaluation method for exploring the mechanism and efficacy of acupuncture treatment on PFP, and develop an interactive augmented facial nerve function rehabilitation training system with multiple training models. Methods: This prospective and observational trial will recruit 200 eligible participants for the following study. In the trial, the laser speckle contrast analysis (LASCA) technology will be applied to monitor the microcirculation of facial blood flow during acupuncture, and real-time monitoring algorithms, data sampling, and digital imaging methods will be conducted by machine learning and image segmentation. Then, a database of patient facial expressions will be built, the correlation between surface blood flow perfusion volume and facial structure symmetry will be analyzed, combined with scale assessment and electrophysiological detection. In addition, we will also explore the objectivity and effectiveness of LASCA in the evaluation of facial paralysis (FP), and the changes in blood flow microcirculation before and after acupuncture treatment will be analyzed. Results: The standard image of the facial target area with facial nerve injury will be manually segmented by the convolutional neural network method. The blood flow images of the eyelid, cheek, and mandible of the patients’ affected and healthy side will be compared and evaluated. Laser speckle blood flow symmetry Pr and its changes in FP condition evolution and prognosis outcome will be measured, and relevant characteristic signals values will be extracted. Finally, COX regression analysis method is conducted to establish a higher accuracy prediction model of FP with cross-validation based on laser speckle blood flow imaging technology. Conclusions: We use modern interdisciplinary high-tech technologies to explore the mechanism of acupuncture rehabilitation training in PFP. And we will provide evidence for the feasibility of using the LASCA technique as a typing diagnosis of FP in the acupuncture rehabilitation treatment of PFP. Registration number: ChiCTR1800019463

27. Different Acupuncture Therapies for Allergic Rhinitis: Overview of Systematic Reviews and Network Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Objective. To evaluate the quality of methodologies used in previous systematic reviews (SRs) and compare efficacy of different acupuncture therapies for allergic rhinitis. Methods. Seven electronic databases were searched for systematic reviews (SRs) performed on different acupuncture therapies for allergic rhinitis from inception to 15 November 2019. The AMSTAR2 instrument was employed to assess the methodological quality of included SRs. Eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected from the included systematic reviews. We also included recent RCTs published by 15 November 2019. Cochrane risk of bias tool was utilized to determine risk of bias of the included RCTs. Pairwise meta-analyses were performed using the random-effects model. Network meta-analysis of the included RCTs was carried out using frequentist framework. Results. We identified 2 SRs with low quality and 18 SRs with very low quality, both of which contained 33 eligible RCTs (n = 3769). Most of these studies had unclear risk of bias. On the basis of ranking probability, NMA analysis showed that acupuncture at the sphenopalatine ganglion acupoint (OR: 1.31, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.61) had the highest probability of improving global allergic rhinitis symptoms, followed by San-Fu-Tie (OR: 1.17, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.27), manual acupuncture (OR:1.15, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.24) compared with conventional western medicine treatment. Moreover, direct comparison of the follow-up period showed that the clinical outcomes of acupuncture and related therapies at three-month (OR:1.34, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.55), six-month (OR: 1.31, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.57), and twelve-month (OR: 1.30, 95%CI 1.11 to 1.53) follow-up were better than those of traditional western medicine. Conclusion. These results indicate that for patients with allergic rhinitis who are unresponsive to conventional western medicine or cannot tolerate the side effects, acupuncture at the sphenopalatine ganglion acupoint is an effective alternative therapy. Further studies are advocated to deeply explore methodological quality of SRs by incorporating high-quality RCTs.

Abstract

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental illness characterized by a persistent feeling of low mood, sadness, fatigue, despair, etc.. In a serious case, patients with MDD may have suicidal thoughts or even suicidal behaviors. In clinical practice, a widely used method of MDD detection is based on a professional rating scale. However, the scale-based diagnostic method is highly subjective, and requires a professional assessment from a trained staff. In this work, 92 participants were recruited to collect EEG signals in the Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, assessing MDD severity with the HAMD-17 rating scale by a trained physician. Two data mining methods of logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM) with derived EEG-based beta-alpha-ratio features, namely LR-DF and SVM-DF, are employed to screen out patients with MDD. Experimental results show that the presented the LR-DF and SVM-DF achieved F 1 scores of 0:76 0:30 and 0:92 0:18, respectively, which have obvious superiority to the LR and SVM without derived EEG-based beta-alpha-ratio features.

Abstract

Bell's palsy impairs the symmetry of facial appearance and movement. Detailed examination of facial muscle activities should be important for the diagnosis and treatment of the Bell's palsy. In this study, facial muscle activities in normal and Bell's palsy conditions were measured using a high-density (HD) electromyography (EMG) technique. The EMG signals during active tasks (four different facial expressions) and resting task were collected with a HD array of EMG electrodes from forehead and cheek muscles. To visualize facial EMG activities, the EMG maps were reconstructed from the HD-EMG recordings. The two-dimension (2D) correlation coefficients between right and left sides of facial EMG maps were calculated to evaluate the symmetry of facial muscle activities during these tasks. Our experimental results showed that the 2D correlation coefficients during active tasks were different significantly (P<0.01) between the healthy group(n=4) and Bell's palsy group(n=3). These results demonstrated that the synchronism of facial muscle activities during active tasks in healthy subjects is greater than that in the Bell's palsy subjects. This pilot study suggested that HD-EMG would be a potential technique to assess abnormal asymmetric activities of facial muscles for Bell's palsy.

47. The effects of Jin's three-needle acupuncture therapy on EEG alpha rhythm of stroke patients.

Abstract

Background: In China, Jin's three-needle acupuncture therapy has been widely used for stroke treatment. However, its mechanism remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Jin's three-needle acupuncture therapy on stroke patients using multi-channel EEGs., Materials and Methods: Fifty stroke patients participated and their EEG signals were recorded before, during, and after acupuncture., Results: Comparing with baseline before acupuncture, the alpha rhythm was significantly increased during the acupuncture needle retention stage and became stronger after removing the needles. The increase of alpha rhythm occurred when inserting and removing the needles, with its high amplitude remaining during retention and after removal of the needles. As the alpha rhythm was significantly correlated with patients' movement and daily-living abilities, the alteration of alpha rhythm during and after acupuncture suggests a possible electrophysiological mechanism of the curative effect of acupuncture for stroke rehabilitation., Conclusion: From the electrophysiological study, Jin's three-needle acupuncture therapy is efficient in stroke patients.
