Abstract

This research introduces the concept of transferability into the usability construct and creates the Usability Paradigm for Multiple Device System (UPMDS) to conceptualize and quantify the usability in multiple device scenarios. This study fills the literature gap that no effective method exists in measuring transferability and in quantifying usability in a multiple device context. This study also answers the research questions regarding the impact of task complexity, user experience, and device order on the total usability of the system. Study one follows a systematic approach to develop, validate, and apply a new questionnaire tailored specifically to measure the transferability within a multiple device system. The System Transferability Questionnaire (STQ) is obtained after validation with 15 question items. In a software usability study, the STQ demonstrated excellent internal reliability and validity. Results show that the STQ is effective in capturing four factors regarding transferability, which are transfer experience (TE), overall experience (OE), consistency perception (CP) and functionality perception (FP). Validation results show good convergent, discriminant, criterion and nomonlogical validity. Study two adopts a systematic tool to consolidate usability constructs into a total usability score. The study utilizes principal component analysis (PCA) to determine the weight of the four usability components (satisfaction, transferability, effectiveness, and efficiency), which is used when obtaining the total usability score. Results show slightly different weights for the four components. This quantitative tool can be applied in different usability context in which multiple devices are involved. Usability specialists are encouraged to adjust the tool based on different usability scenarios. Study three investigates the impact of task complexity, user experience, and device order on the total system usability. Results show that the total usability score is not affected by task complexity, user experience or device order. However, lower physical task complexity leads to longer performance time and lower errors from the users. High experienced users have significantly lower errors made in tasks. The machine order also has divergent results. When the mini-lathe machine was used first, users had better transferability results but poorer performance outcomes as compared to when the drill press was used first.

13. Training Effectiveness and Trainee Performance in a Voluntary Training Program: Are Trainees Really Motivated?

Abstract

Effective training programs are critical for successful employee performance. The same can be said for volunteer programs. Volunteers need to have the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the mission of the organization. In this study, we examine the impact of training methods and trainees’ demographic factors on the effectiveness of a training program for a voluntary program. Survey results (N = 5,727) indicate a very low percentage of participation (16.46%) in the voluntary program after training. Responses also indicate that content knowledge recall after training is affected by training year (the year receiving training), industrial sector, calling history, and training delivery method. Participants’ desires for retraining are also impacted by the type of training received, the industry sector, as well as past participation in the program. Recommendations for voluntary training programs based on study results and future research directions are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

14. Introducing a New Usability Framework for Analyzing Usability in a Multiple-device System

Abstract

This paper fills in the theoretical gap in the existing usability evaluation literature by introducing a new usability framework: the Usability Paradigm for Multiple Device System (UPMDS). The traditional usability framework for single interface evaluation is not sufficient to analyze usability in multiple-device system, in which the interrelationship between the devices has an impact on user performance. Therefore, the transfer of learning paradigm was adopted. The UPMDS framework consists of two usability attributes: transferability and user perception, which were further decomposed into effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction, attractiveness. Three measurement types, behavioral cues, subjective ratings, and self reported results, were suggested to address the existing challenges in usability evaluation. Future research is suggested to utilize the concept of transfer of learning in the area of usability evaluation, and provide empirical validation to the current usability framework.

Abstract

Refereed/Peer-reviewed lorasulam is widely used for weed control in wheat fields due to its high activity and low dosage. Previous studies on florasulam have focused on soil microbial and residue determination, however, its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms is unclear. The toxicity of florasulam was evaluated in larvae (120 h) and adult (14 and 28 d) zebrafish. After florasulam (0.1 and 1 μg L-1) exposure, reactive oxygen species levels in larvae and adult zebrafish significantly increased and antioxidant system was activated. Florasulam induced lipid peroxidation in larvae and adult zebrafish. Florasulam did not cause DNA damage to larvae but caused DNA damage to adult zebrafish. Changes in caspase 3/8/9 genes indicated that apoptosis was induced in larvae but inhibited in adult zebrafish. By calculating integrated biomarker response, caspase 3 and malondialdehyde could be used as early warning indicators of florasulam effect on larvae and adult zebrafish, respectively. The higher the exposure concentration, the greater the toxicity of florasulam to larvae and adult zebrafish. Increasing exposure time resulted in higher toxicity to adult zebrafish. Florasulam has different toxicity at larvae and adult zebrafish. In future studies to investigate florasulam toxicity to zebrafish, different zebrafish life stages (larvae and adult) need to be studied.

18. Association between glymphatic dysfunction and neurocognitive decline in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy.

Abstract

Background: The glymphatic system is essential for the maintenance of brain homeostasis. It may be impaired in patients with epilepsy, but its association with neurocognitive function remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the association between changes in the glymphatic system and neurocognitive function in individuals diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE)., Methods: This retrospective case-control research engaged a group of patients with FLE and age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy volunteers. All participants were subjected to extensive neurocognitive assessments, complemented by structural and diffusion-weighted imaging. The "diffusion tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space" (DTI-ALPS) index was computed to ascertain differences in glymphatic system function between the groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to explore associations between DTI-ALPS, clinical characteristics in patients with FLE, and the neurocognitive test outcomes for both groups., Results: Twenty-five patients [mean age ± standard deviation (SD): 26.28±8.12 years, 10 females] with FLE and 22 healthy control (HC) participants (average age ± SD: 25.86±6.15 years, 11 females) were included. The average ALPS-index in FLE group was significantly lower than that in HC group (1.387±0.127 vs. 1.468±0.114, P=0.026). Further, significant neurocognitive difference was noted in Trail Making Test (TMT), Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT), Digit Span Test (DST) and similarity test (ST) between the two groups. ALPS-index scores exhibited a negative correlation with disease duration in patients with FLE (r=-0.415, P=0.039), and positive correlations with the Forward Digit Span Test (FDST, r=0.399, P=0.005) and Similarity Test (ST, r=0.395, P=0.006) in both groups. After adjusting for potential confounders, DTI-ALPS maintained a significant independent association with FDST and ST., Conclusions: The findings of the current study suggest a possible association between impairment in glymphatic function and FLE.
