[Display omitted] Bi-functional electrocatalysts are desired for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Herein, facile O 2 -plasma activation is introduced to improve the bi-functionality via constructing nickel sulfide-oxide heterostructures. Ni 3 S 2 -NiO x supported by nickel foam delivers obviously elevated HER and OER activity in comparison with pristine Ni 3 S 2 and recently reported NiS x -based electrocatalysts, featured by the low overpotentials for HER (104 mV) and OER (241 mV) at ±10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH, as well as a voltage of 1.52 V for overall water splitting. As revealed by in-situ Raman spectroscopy, on the one hand, Ni(OH) 2 generated from Ni 3 S 2 during alkaline HER accelerates water dissociation toward the gradually improved performance; on the other hand, this heterostructure undergoes extensive oxidation during OER, leading to excessive NiOOH covering on Ni 3 S 2 and thereby declining activity. • We have successfully demonstrated a bidirectional wavelength-locked ultrafast erbium doped fiber laser. This is the first implementation of filter effect on the bidirectional mode locked fiber laser and in increases the manipulation dimension compared with unidirectional mode locked fiber laser. • The bidirectional mode locked fiber laser can emit two frequency combs with the same repetition rates from a single asymmetric laser cavity. The wavelength locking effect is verified to be the insertion of microfiber. Besides, continuous wavelength tuning is realized for the first time from both directions by applying strain on microfiber. • The experimental results indicate that such filter effect can hold ability to break the asymmetric structure of traditional bidirectional fiber lasers, from which output pulses are always generated with a slight repetition rate difference. For intracavity phase interferometry, the filter effect can greatly simplify the cavity design and reduce cost. In addition, the wavelength tuning characteristics may also further expand application of optical sensing. Bidirectional mode-locked fiber lasers are promising media to implement intracavity phase interferometry (IPI) due to the ability to produce ultrashort pulses in a compact design. A typical bidirectional ultrafast fiber laser will generate counter-propagating pulses with different repetition rates due to the asymmetric constructure. In this paper, by using the filtering effect of microfiber, an asymmetric bidirectional fiber laser that emits two pulses with same operation wavelength is demonstrated. The utilization of microfiber in locking output wavelength from two directions may directly simplify the design of laser cavity suitable for IPI applications. Moreover, continuous wavelength tuning in a single-cavity bidirectional ultrafast fiber laser has been realized for the first time by applying strain on the microfiber. In the clockwise (CW) direction, wavelength tuning ranges from 1558.96 nm to 1567.3 nm and from 1558.93 nm to 1567.25 nm in the counter clockwise (CCW) direction. The counter-circulating pulses maintain spectral locking state during the whole wavelength tuning process with a good linear sensitivity of 0.2 nm/µm. • Femtosecond laser direct-writing inscription of a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG). • Such a 45° TFG as a polarizer for a net-normal-dispersion fiber laser was studied. • Various types of dissipative soliton outputs. • The results indicate that the feasibility and versatility of such a 45° TFG. The application of a femtosecond laser direct inscribed 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) in a net-normal-dispersion mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser, as an in-fiber polarizer, has been systematically studied. The 45° TFG with a grating length of ~ 12.6 mm and a grating period of ~ 2.2 μm has a polarization dependent loss of ~ 9.8 dB and supports various types of dissipative soliton (DS) outputs. The achieved single DS mode-locked pulse centered at 1570.55 nm has a 3 dB bandwidth of 15.64 nm and a pulse duration of ~ 4.68 ps. By simply employing a section of single-mode fiber, the output pulse duration can be dechirped to ~ 250 fs. The fundamental repetition rate is 25.47 MHz and the maximum pulse output power is 24.04 mW. By appropriately adjusting the intra-cavity polarization states and increasing the pump power, the bound-state DS, as well as a harmonic mode-locked DS, can be generated. The bound-state pulse is composed of two identical DS pulses with a temporal interval of ~ 26.27 ps. The second- and third-order harmonic mode-locked DS pulses with repetition rates of 50.93 MHz and 76.40 MHz are obtained for pump powers of 298 mW and 528 mW, respectively. Our results indicate that the feasibility and versatility of the femtosecond laser inscribed 45° TFG to realize nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking in various operation regimes. Combined with the flexibility of the femtosecond laser direct inscription technique, such a 45° TFG paves a promising route for the development of robust, compact and high-energy ultrafast all-fiber lasers. We demonstrate a pump-controlled wavelength switchable Yb-doped fiber laser (YDFL) by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) for the first time. The polarizer replaced by a 45° tilted fiber grating (45°-TFG) combines with a section of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) to form a fiber-based birefringent filter. Stable dissipative soliton (DS) with center wavelength of 1068.39 nm is generated under the mode-locked threshold of 277 mW. The operating wavelength switching between 1046.51 nm and 1067.90 nm can be realized via increasing the pump power simply while keeping the polarization controllers (PCs) in a fixed state. The laser maintains stable mode-locking operation at each wavelength, which can be regarded as a type of multi-wavelength ultrafast light source with precise control and integration potential. Spacer wires are frequently applied as the positioning components of fuel rods in lead-based fast reactors. It is extremely important to carry out the research of the impacts from spacer wires on coolant flow within fuel assemblies, and therefore the safety performances of reactor core. In this paper, the open source CFD calculation software OpenFOAM was adopted to perform the refined numerical simulation on the rod bundle of the fuel assembly in CiADS. The results show that spacer wires will increase the pressure drop along the rod bundle section of the fuel assembly. The rational fabrication of Pt‐free catalysts for driving the development of practical applications in alkaline water electrolysis and fuel cells is promising but challenging. Herein, a promising approach is outlined for the rational design of multimetallic catalysts comprising multiple active sites including Pd nanoclusters and Ru single atoms anchored at the defective sites of Ni(OH)2 to simultaneously enhance hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and ethanol oxidation reactions (EOR). Remarkably, Pd12Ru3/Ni(OH)2/C exhibits a remarkably reduced HER overpotential (16.1 mV@10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 21.8 mV dec−1) as compared to commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C (26.0 mV@10 mA cm−2, 32.5 mV dec−1). More importantly, Pd12Ru3/Ni(OH)2/C possesses a self‐optimized overpotential to 12.5 mV@10 mA cm−2 after 20 000 cycles stability test while a significantly decreased performance for commercial 20wt.% Pt/C (64.5 mV@10 mA cm−2 after 5000 cycles). The mass activity of Pd12Ru3/Ni(OH)2/C for the EOR is up to 3.724 A mgPdRu−1, ≈20 times higher than that of commercial Pd/C. Electrochemical in situ Fourier transform infrared measurements confirm the enhanced CO2 selectivity of Pd12Ru3/Ni(OH)2/C while synergistic and electronic effects of adjacent Ru, Pd, and OHad adsorption on Ni(OH)2 at low potential play a key role during EOR. Carbon nanotube (CNT)–polymer composite films are key elements in widespread photonic and optoelectronic applications. One particular successful application is to produce ultrashort optical pulses in the laser cavity. Nevertheless, such composite film may suffer from severe humidity/water degradation, from which the laser may even stop generating regular pulses. Here, surfactant‐free CNT–styrene methyl‐methacrylate polymer composite film is fabricated. Based on such film‐type saturable absorber, a self‐starting passively mode‐locked erbium‐doped fiber laser with the capability of generating ≈1 ps pulses is demonstrated. From the perspective of experimental measurements and numerical simulations, the effectiveness of a saturable absorber in generating ultrashort pulses is confirmed. The operating composite film can survive under fully immersed water condition for 30 days. More importantly, after the non‐operating composite film has been fully soaked in the water tank for 2 days, it can still mode‐lock the laser as it is in dry air condition, confirming the humidity resistance capability. In addition, it is experimentally found that the mechanical packaging of the composite film has an impact on the survival time of composite film under water immersion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A wavelength-tunable high repetition rate (HRR) erbium-doped fiber laser in L-band based on dissipative four-wave mixing (DFWM) mechanism is demonstrated. The cavity can generate a single-soliton train and bound-soliton train with a fixed repetition rate of ~126 GHz, which is determined by the free spectral range of the intra-cavity Lyot filter. A wide wavelength-tuning operation can also be obtained by rotating the polarization controllers. The wavelength-tuning ranges of the HRR single-soliton state and HRR bound-soliton state are ~38.3 nm and ~22.6 nm, respectively. This laser provides useful references for the area of a wavelength-tunable fiber laser with high repetition rate.
