Information on the population distribution at the building scale can help governments make supplemental decisions to address complex urban management issues. However, the discontinuity and strong spatial heterogeneity of research units at the building scale make it challenging to fuse multi-source geographic data, which causes significant errors in population estimation. To address this problem, this study proposes a method for population estimation at the building scale based on Dual-Environment Feature Fusion (DEFF). The dual environments of buildings were constructed by splitting the physical boundaries and extracting features suitable for the dual-environment scale from multi-source geographic data to describe the complex environmental features of buildings. Meanwhile, Data Quality Weighting based Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (DQW-TOPSIS) method was proposed to assign appropriate weights to the features of the external environment for better feature fusion. Finally, a regression model was established using dual-environment features for building-scale population estimation. The experimental areas chosen for this study were Jianghan and Wuchang Districts, both located in Wuhan City, China. The estimated results of the DEFF were compared with those of the ablation experiments, as well as three publicly accessible population datasets, specifically LandScan, WorldPop, and GHS-POP, at the community scale. The evaluation results showed that DEFF had an [Formula: see text] of approximately 0.8, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of approximately 1200, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of approximately 1700, and both Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Symmetric Mean Absolute Percentage Error (SMAPE) of approximately 26%, indicating an improved performance and verifying the validity of the proposed method for fine-scale population estimation.

To meet the greenhouse gas reduction targets and address the uncertainty introduced by the surging penetration of stochastic renewable energy sources, energy storage systems are being deployed in microgrids. Relying solely on short-term uncertainty forecasts can result in substantial costs when making dispatch decisions for a storage system over an entire day. To mitigate this challenge, an adaptive robust optimization approach tailored for a hybrid hydrogen battery energy storage system (HBESS) operating within a microgrid is proposed, with a focus on efficient state-of-charge (SoC) planning to minimize microgrid expenses. The SoC ranges of the battery energy storage (BES) are determined in the day- ahead stage. Concurrently, the power generated by fuel cells and consumed by electrolysis device are optimized. This is followed by the intraday stage, where BES dispatch decisions are made within a predetermined SoC range to accommodate the uncertainties realized. To address this uncertainty and solve the adaptive optimization problem with integer recourse variables in the intraday stage, we proposed an outer-inner column-and-constraint generation algorithm (outer-inner-CCG). Numerical analyses underscored the high effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed adaptive robust operation model in making decisions for HBESS dispatch.

During the development of service-based software systems, Geospatial Service (GS) replacement is often performed, which requires the discovery of functionally similar services in service registries to replace failed services. Compared to real-time similarity computations, direct extraction of similar services from constructed similarity relationships can yield higher replacement efficiency. However, missing and inconsistent service-registry information impedes accurate similarity relationship construction. Here, we propose a Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based model for GS Similarity Relationship construction considering service descriptions and tags, which is named GSSR-GNN. As the sparsity of the service similarity relationship graph constructed based on labeled samples limits the information propagation ability, a graph augmentation method for similarity relationship construction among second-order neighbors is proposed. Considering the differences in the semantic-information feature distributions, such as the service descriptions and tags, a feed-forward neural network-based fusion method is designed to embed them into the same vector space. Pre-trained Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and WordNet models are introduced to enhance the service-representation expressiveness. When an enhanced service representation is input to the GNN, the similarity is calculated and the service similarity relationship is obtained. Experimental results show that the proposed model constructs service similarity relationships with high precision, thus improving the service replacement efficiency and reducing the computational cost of service registry during service replacement.

Geographic analysis models are becoming increasingly important in the era of geospatial big data. As a cloud platform that combines massive geospatial data resources with powerful computational capabilities, the Google Earth Engine (GEE) gathers a large number of workflow scripts for different geographic analysis tasks and gradually evolves into a comprehensive knowledge repository. However, due to the complexity nature of GEE workflow scripts, extracting modeling knowledge from these GEE workflow scripts remains a challenge. Besides, these GEE workflow scripts are often tightly coupled with the GEE environment, which limits their reuse in the broader geospatial community. To address these issues, this paper proposes a GEE knowledge extraction and reuse framework, which uncovers factual meta-information and modeling processes embedded within the GEE workflow script by leveraging ChatGPT and the abstract syntax tree (AST). A GEE knowledge encapsulation template is developed to systematically describe this modeling knowledge. Through case studies, we demonstrate that this framework can be integrated with existing geospatial service technologies, simplify the extraction of modeling knowledge from GEE workflow scripts, and enhance their application in different modeling environments. Moreover, by incorporating ChatGPT, this framework exhibits the potential for intelligent generation of geographic analysis models.

It is necessary to integrate data and information effectively in order to build an integrated digital and refined urban system. A multi-granularity and multi-view urban heat map formed by integrating multi-source urban information flow can assist in immediate decision-making. Managing urban big data in the form of streams requires a stable operating environment that can efficiently handle millions of sensors and devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) in a highly concurrent environment. Urban management data contain spatiotemporal multi-dimensional information that presents the complexity of spatiotemporal dynamic associations, further increasing the difficulty of data streaming. To overcome these challenges, we have proposed a spatiotemporal-pyramid (ST-pyramid) model that organizes multidimensional and dynamic data streams logically using a data partition strategy based on geographical grid subdivision. Accordingly, we have proposed a load-balanced heatmap pyramid computation framework that can be used to build streaming processing procedures in a distributed environment. In addition, we implemented an urban traffic heatmap prototype system based on an open-source Flink framework. The experimental results show that the real-time heatmap pyramid construction algorithm proposed in this paper has high throughput, low latency, and flexible scalability and can provide large-scale public services in time in digital earth construction.

Differences in the spatial scale and component elements of urban scenes affect the analysis of spatiotemporal changes in population distribution (PD) patterns. Fixed scales and geometric forms constrained previous analyses of PD and spatiotemporal changes, which neglected the realistic characteristics of urban scenarios. These limitations hinder the ability to capture the diversity and spatiotemporal representation of PD patterns across multiple spatial scales. This study developed a multi-spatial scale population analysis unit (PAU) construction method considering the scenario heterogeneity and long/short-term patterns of spatiotemporal population changes (PC). Initially, we decompose the multi-scale changes in population time series patterns and their relationships with scene features along the temporal dimension to analyze the primary and secondary factors. Starting from the temporal characteristics of the PD and PC, we established a validation and correction method for the factors. Finally, combined with a multi-feature clustering method, a multi-scale PAU construction method driven by scene feature factors is proposed. Experiments were conducted at different spatial scales in both routine and emergent scenarios. The results indicated that this method can help to obtain more homogeneous analysis regions and enhance the stability and phase pattern representations of changes in PDs, thereby improving the interpretability of analytical results.

Differences in human mobility reflect temporal variations and spatial differences in urban spaces, including regional functions, physical environments, and geographical sentiments. Accurately quantifying these differences is critical for understanding and managing cities. However, existing measurement methods overlook the spatial distribution of population movement, which limits the ability to compare spatial differences in human mobility. Separate treatment of the spatial distribution, flux, and distance of human movement increases the complexity and uncertainty of understanding geographic phenomena. Therefore, we propose a flow-based location measure, termed the mobility difference index (MDI), that fuses multidimensional movement characteristics to quantify temporal variations and spatial differences in human mobility. The method quantifies the differences in human mobility by calculating the minimum transformation cost between two sets of origin-destination flows based on optimal transport theory. Simulation experiments confirmed the advantage of the MDI in perceiving the multidimensional characteristics of human movement, particularly regarding spatial distribution. We examined mobile signaling and positioning data from Wuhan and found that the proposed MDI could effectively identify the spatial and temporal dependencies of variations in human mobility and heterogeneous effects of spatial semantics and distance on spatial differences in human mobility.

Road traffic crashes are becoming thorny issues being faced worldwide. Traffic crashes are spatiotemporal events and the research on the spatiotemporal patterns and variation trends of traffic crashes has been carried out. However, the impact of built environment on traffic crash spatiotemporal trends has not received much attention. Moreover, the spatial non-stationarity between the variation trends of traffic crashes and their influencing factors is usually neglected. To make up for the lack of analysis of built environment factors influencing spatiotemporal hotspot trends in traffic crashes, this paper proposed a method of “ST-GWLR” for analyzing the influence of built environment factors on spatiotemporal hotspot trends of traffic crashes by combining the spatiotemporal hotspot trend analysis and Geographically Weighted Logistic Regression (GWLR) modeling methods. Firstly, the traffic crash spatiotemporal hotspot trends were explored using the space-time cube model, hotspot analysis, and Mann-Kendall trend test. Then, the GWLR was introduced to capture the spatial non-stationarity neglected by the classic Global Logistic Regression (GLR) model, to improve the accuracy of the model estimation. GWLR model is used for the first time to analyze the significant local correlation between the traffic crash spatiotemporal hotspot trends and the built environment factors, to accurately and effectively identify the built environment factors that have significant influences on the hotspot trends of traffic crashes. The performance of the GWLR models and GLR models was examined and compared sufficiently. The results showed that the proposed ST-GWLR, which captured spatial non-stationarity, performed better than the classic GLR combined with spatiotemporal analysis, and improved the prediction accuracy of the models by 14.9%, 13.9%, and 15.1%, respectively. There were significant local correlations between intensifying hotspots and persistent hotspots of traffic crashes and the built environment factors. The findings of this paper have positive implications for traffic safety management and urban built environment planning.

With the escalating global climate changes and rapid urbanization, urban flood disasters have become more frequent and severe, hindering progress toward global sustainability goals. The rapid growth of information technology provides abundant data for disaster monitoring, but transitioning from static to dynamic and structured to heterogeneous data poses challenges for organized flood disaster information analysis. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of flood disaster components and spatiotemporal characteristics, exploring qualitative information expression in diverse contexts and quantitative dynamic analysis. Using dimensions like spatiotemporal, semantic, and hierarchical correlations, we introduce a multi-level, multi-dimensional “circumstance-event” model for flood disaster events. Leveraging proximity and semantic relationships, we establish a dynamic semantic association network among geographical units, supporting disaster circumstance division using semantic correlation graphs. Introducing bidirectional relationship discrimination, we enhance the traditional group evolution discovery method to determine the evolution of circumstances in consecutive time windows. Taking the “7·20” heavy rain in Zhengzhou, China as a case study, we observe significant improvement in circumstance division based on semantic correlation graphs, with an average modularity exceeding 0.745. Our bidirectional community evolution method reveals the evolution sequences of circumstances throughout the flood disaster period in Zhengzhou. This approach effectively organizes the entire flood disaster event lifecycle and dynamically analyzes event evolution, offering vital support for comprehensive disaster management.

Urban growth has accelerated significantly in recent decades, categorized into two spatial patterns: adjacent and outlying growth. Traditional Cellular Automata (CA)-based models excel at simulating adjacent growth but exhibit limitations in modeling outlying growth, which can be summarized into two issues: 1) the overestimation of neighborhood effects caused by models’ excessive dependence on neighboring cell states; and 2) the ignorance of spatial heterogeneity in the relative importance of land suitability and neighborhood effects on urban growth. To address these problems, a novel CA model with Separate Extraction and Adaptive Fusion of land suitability and neighborhood effects (SEAF-CA) is proposed. In this model, a dual-path convolution structure is employed to extract spatial features from driving factors and cell states; geographical coordinates of each cell then input into a multilayer perceptron to derive spatially varying weights for feature fusion. Finally, the derived conversion probability is integrated with CA to simulate urban growth. Land use data collected from 2000 to 2020 in Wuhan are selected to evaluate the proposed model. Experimental results illustrate that SEAF-CA outperforms three typical CA models, achieving the closest outlying growth proportion to reality and the highest simulation accuracy. ABSTRACTPublic Map Service Platforms (PMSPs) provide embedded map services in domains such as forests and rivers. Users from different domains (Domain Users) prefer specific spatial features, and extracting the Browsing Interests of Domain Users (BIDUs) can help elucidate users’ access intentions and provide suitable recommendations. Previous research has found that access frequency of spatial features is an indicator of users’ browsing interests; however, high-frequency spatial features are sparsely distributed, resulting in inaccurate extraction of browsing interests. Our objective is to model the spatial co-occurrence of spatial features and employ BIDUs extraction to address this limitation. First, to extract spatial features in tiles, we proposed a k-nearest neighbor method for Point-of-Interest (POI) extraction and a template-based method for Land Uses/Land Covers extraction. Then, we developed the word2vec model to construct a POI semantic space to quantify spatial co-occurrence and employed multi-domain user classification to verify its effectiveness. Finally, a combined word2vec and singular value decomposition model is proposed to perform topic extraction as a representation of BIDUs. Compared with the baseline models, the proposed model integrates spatial co-occurrence from massive POIs to achieve high-accuracy BIDU extraction. Our findings can help construct domain user profiles and support the development of intelligent PMSPs.

With over a million cases detected each year, skin disease is a global public health problem that diminishes the quality of life due to its difficulty to eradicate, propensity for recurrence, and potential for post-treatment scarring. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment with minimal invasiveness or scarring and few side effects, making it well tolerated by patients. However, this treatment requires further research and development to improve its effective clinical use. Here, a piezoelectric-driven microneedle (PDMN) platform that achieves high efficiency, safety, and non-invasiveness for enhanced PDT is proposed. This platform induces deep tissue cavitation, increasing the level of protoporphyrin IX and significantly enhancing drug penetration. A clinical trial involving 25 patients with skin disease was conducted to investigate the timeliness and efficacy of PDMN-assisted PDT (PDMN-PDT). Our findings suggested that PDMN-PDT boosted treatment effectiveness and reduced the required incubation time and drug concentration by 25% and 50%, respectively, without any anesthesia compared to traditional PDT. These findings suggest that PDMN-PDT is a safe and minimally invasive approach for skin disease treatment, which may improve the therapeutic efficacy of topical medications and enable translation for future clinical applications.

With the introduction of deep learning methods, the computation required for remote sensing change detection has significantly increased, and distributed computing is applied to remote sensing change detection to improve computational efficiency. However, due to the large size of deep learning models, the time-consuming gradient transfer during distributed model training weakens the acceleration effectiveness in change detection. Data communication and updates can be the bottlenecks in distributed change detection systems with limited network resources. To address the interrelated problems, we propose a communication-efficient distributed deep learning remote sensing change detection framework (CEDD-CD) based on the synchronous update architecture. The CEDD-CD integrates change detection with communication-efficient distributed gradient compression approaches, which can efficiently reduce the data volume to be transferred. In addition, for the implicit effect caused by the delay of compressed gradient update, a momentum compensation mechanism under theoretical analysis was constructed to reduce the time consumption required for model convergence and strengthen the stability of distributed training. We also designed a unified distributed change detection system architecture to reduce the complexity of distributed modeling. Experiments were conducted on three datasets; the qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that the CEDD-CD was effective for massive remote sensing image change detection.

Public Map Service Platforms (PMSPs) aggregate and disseminate the earth observation data. Leveraging spatiotemporal preference patterns derived from browsing targets within complex virtual trajectories on PMSPs aids in constructing user-profiles and comprehending their intentions. However, complex virtual trajectories, characterized by numerous trajectory points and overlapping pyramidal spatial structures, introduce inefficiencies and inaccuracies during browsing target extraction. To mitigate this, we propose an Optimized Spatial Structure Segmentation (OSSS) method that divides complex virtual trajectories into sub-trajectories with simplified spatial structures, enhancing the efficiency of browsing target extraction. Spatiotemporal reconstruction of these sub-trajectories establishes sequences of browsing targets, revealing patterns of interest transitions. Moreover, recognizing the spatial uncertainty inherent in complex virtual trajectories, which results in imprecise matching between browsing targets and spatial features, we introduce a spatial co-occurrence semantic modeling approach. This involves constructing a POI semantic space and introducing a semantic similarity matching method to reduce spatial uncertainty and refine the accuracy of mining spatiotemporal preference patterns. We evaluate these methods using real-world data from Tianditu. Results demonstrate that the OSSS improves extraction efficiency by 3.45 times and accuracy by 18.84%. Additionally, the semantic similarity approach combined with spatial co-occurrence effectively mitigates spatial uncertainty. This research contributes to advancing the intelligence of PMSPs.

A centralized framework-based data-driven framework for active distribution system state estimation (DSSE) has been widely leveraged. However, it is challenged by potential data privacy breaches due to the aggregation of raw measurement data in a data center. A personalized federated learning-based DSSE method (PFL-DSSE) is proposed in a decentralized training framework for DSSE. Experimental validation confirms that PFL-DSSE can effectively and efficiently maintain data confidentiality and enhance estimation accuracy.

Abstract Keloids are benign fibroproliferative tumors that severely diminish the quality of life due to discomfort, dysfunction, and disfigurement. Recently, ultrasound technology as a noninvasive adjuvant therapy is developed to optimize treatment protocols. However, the biophysical mechanisms have not yet been fully elucidated. Here, it is proposed that piezo‐type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1) plays an important role in low‐frequency sonophoresis (LFS) induced mechanical transduction pathways that trigger downstream cellular signaling processes. It is demonstrated that patient‐derived primary keloid fibroblasts (PKF), NIH 3T3, and HFF‐1 cell migration are inhibited, and PKF apoptosis is significantly increased by LFS stimulation. And the effects of LFS is diminished by the application of GsMTx‐4, the selective inhibitor of Piezo1, and the knockdown of Piezo1. More importantly, the effects of LFS can be imitated by Yoda1, an agonist of Piezo1 channels. Establishing a patient‐derived xenograft keloid implantation mouse model further verified these results, as LFS significantly decreased the volume and weight of the keloids. Moreover, blocking the Piezo1 channel impaired the effectiveness of LFS treatment. These results suggest that LFS inhibits the malignant characteristics of keloids by activating the Piezo1 channel, thus providing a theoretical basis for improving the clinical treatment of keloids.

Land cover and its changes over time are significant for better understanding the Earth’s fundamental characteristics and processes, such as global climate change, hydrology, and the carbon cycle. A number of land cover-geoprocessing models have been proposed for land cover-data production with different spatial and temporal resolutions. With the massive growth in land cover data and the increasing demand for efficient model utilization, developing efficient and convenient land cover-geoprocessing models has become a formidable challenge. Although some model-migration methods have been proposed for handling the massive data, the intricacy of land cover-data and -heterogeneity models frequently prevent current strategies from directly meeting demand. In this paper, we propose the PAMC-LC-containerization approach to overcome the difficulties associated with moving existing land cover models in the open web environment. Based on the idea of model migration, we design a standardized model description and hierarchical encapsulation strategy for land cover models, and develop migration and deployment methods. Furthermore, we assess the viability and efficacy of the proposed approach by using coupled workflows for model migration and the introduction of visualization on the Mts-WH dataset and the Google dataset. The experimental results show that the PAMC-LC approach can simplify and streamline the model migration process, with important ramifications for increasing productivity, reusing models, and lowering additional data-transmission costs.

The population analysis unit (PAU) is the basic unit employed in studies of urban populations. The commonly used PAUs are mostly administrative divisions, regular geographic grids. However, these units are different from urban forms, and cannot be used to consider the characteristics of population distributions and flow changes. In this study, we proposed a method for constructing a fine population analysis zone (FPAZ) based on the population aggregation pattern and urban form elements. First, considering the spatial structure of a city and the fine-grained demands of population analysis, the basic analysis unit was divided according to the functional heterogeneity of the population activity region at the micro-scale by combining urban form elements. Next, a population aggregation preference model was established by considering the spatial distribution characteristics of the local aggregation of the urban population flow and long-term stability characteristics depending on the dynamic changes in entrances and exits. Finally, we divided the FPAZ combined with the microstructural elements. Experimental results showed that compared with other types of PAUs, the FPAZ was more consistent with the urban morphology and was an appropriate and general spatial unit for expressing the accurate characteristics of population distributions and changes at the micro-scale.

As a significant part of sustainable urban development proposed by the United Nations, urban planning is related to the ecological environment and transportation, especially affecting quality of life and social well-being. In the process of urban planning, the public express their opinions on open network platforms, resulting in large quantities of network public opinion data, which has important implications for evaluating urban planning. Based on the idea of geographical case-based reasoning (CBR), this paper constructs an expression framework for urban planning cases in the form of a ‘case problem–case attribute–case result’ triad. On this basis, this paper proposes a similarity calculation method of urban planning cases that integrates case attribute. Finally, based on an improvement to the traditional k-nearest neighbors method, the proposed public opinion feature calculation model considers similarity weights, which allow us to predict network public opinion features, including viewpoint-level emotional tendency and concerned groups of urban planning cases. The experimental result shows similarity weights (SWs) model could effectively improve the prediction accuracy, where the average MIC-F1 score reached more than 74%. Based on CBR, the proposed method can predict the development trends of public opinion in future planning cases, and provide scientific and reasonable decision support for urban planning.

Road traffic safety issues pose a serious threat to urban health, and how the built environment affects traffic crashes has been hotly discussed. However, there are limitations in the selection of built environment factors according to the classic 5Ds system in most previous studies. Few studies have considered the influence exerted by visibility factors in intersection level and road diversity at the community level on traffic crashes, and the multi-level structure of crash data may be ignored. Therefore, the proposed visibility analysis method considering visible triangles and visual sensitivity is used to quantify the visual environment features of the intersections. Based on the proposed six-dimensional factors (6Ds) of the built environment (considering the intersection visibility degree and road diversity) and the hierarchical linear model (HLM), this paper proposes the 6Ds-HLM framework to analyze how road traffic crashes are influenced by the built environment factors. The results show that (1) the full model of the proposed 6Ds-HLM which contained the variables of intersection level and community level considering road diversity and the cross-level interactive effect performed best. (2) Interactive effects between intersection visibility and community built environment are founded, and significant 6Ds variables are identified using HLM: a) There was a positive cross-effect between intervisibility and road diversity. The viewshed area of the middle visual sensitive region also presented significant positive cross effects with traffic congestion speed, entertainment venue density, and road diversity. b) There was a significant negative cross-effect between the viewshed area of the middle visual sensitive region and school density.

Transdermal drug delivery (TDD) is less invasive and avoids first-pass metabolism, making it an attractive method for treating various diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. However, current methods for evaluating TDD systems lack in vivo descriptions of drug distribution in the skin. In this study, we demonstrate the capability of the Transient Triplet Differential (TTD) method, a non-invasive and background-free photoacoustic imaging technique, for accurately mapping drug distribution and evaluating different TDD systems. Our findings show that the TTD method can provide high sensitivity and specificity for targeted drug extraction and visualize 3D drug distribution in the skin. Furthermore, in vivo experiments confirmed the potential of the TTD method in evaluating the clinical performance of TDD. It’s predictable that the TTD method can be a reliable and non-invasive approach for evaluating TDD systems and offer valuable insights into TDD research and development.

Clustering is a powerful machine learning method for discovering similar patterns according to the proximity of elements in feature space. Here the authors propose a local direction centrality clustering algorithm that copes with heterogeneous density and weak connectivity issues.

An imbalance in urban development in China has become a contradiction. Points of Interest (POIs) serve as representations of the spatial distribution of urban functions. Analyzing POI spatial co-occurrence patterns can reveal the agglomeration patterns of urban functions across cities at different levels, providing insights into imbalances in urban development. Using POI data from 297 cities in China, the Word2vec model was employed to model the POI spatial co-occurrence patterns, allowing for the quantification of fine-granular urban functionality. Subsequently, the cities were clustered into five tiers representing different levels of development. An urban hierarchical disparity index and graph were introduced to examine variations in urban functions across different tiers. A significant correlation between POI spatial co-occurrence patterns and the GDP of cities at different levels was demonstrated. This study revealed a notable polarization trend characterized by the development of top-tier cities and lagging tail-end cities. Top-tier cities exhibit advantages in terms of their commercial environments, such as international banks, companies, and transportation facilities. Conversely, tail-end cities face deficiencies in urban infrastructure. It is crucial to coordinate resource allocation and establish sustainable development strategies that foster mutual support between the top-tier and tail-end cities.

Population spatialization is widely used for spatially downscaling census population data to finer-scale. The core idea of modern population spatialization is to establish the association between ancillary data and population at the administrative-unit-level (AU-level) and transfer it to generate the gridded population. However, the statistical characteristic of attributes at the pixel-level differs from that at the AU-level, thus leading to prediction bias via the cross-scale modeling (i.e. scale mismatch problem). In addition, integrating multi-source data simply as covariates may underutilize spatial semantics, and lead to incorrect population disaggregation; while neglecting the spatial autocorrelation of population generates excessively heterogeneous population distribution that contradicts to real-world situation. To address the scale mismatch in downscaling, this paper proposes a Cross-Scale Feature Construction (CSFC) method. More specifically, by grading pixel-level attributes, we construct the feature vector of pixel grade proportions to narrow the scale differences in feature representation between AU-level and pixel-level. Meanwhile, fine-grained building patch and mobile positioning data are utilized to adjust the population weighting layer generated from POI-density-based regression modeling. Spatial filtering is furtherly adopted to model the spatial autocorrelation effect of population and reduce the heterogeneity in population caused by pixel-level attribute discretization. Through the comparison with traditional feature construction method and the ablation experiments, the results demonstrate significant accuracy improvements in population spatialization and verify the effectiveness of weight correction steps. Furthermore, accuracy comparisons with WorldPop and GPW datasets quantitatively illustrate the advantages of the proposed method in fine-scale population spatialization.

The spatial distribution of power facilities is uneven, thereby making the topology of geographical wiring diagrams (GWDs) based on the actual coordinates unclear. A single-line diagram has the advantage of a clear topology but it lacks spatial locations. A GWD has the advantage of accurate spatial locations but it lacks a clear topology. Visualizing distribution networks for planning requires both features. We proposed a new planning-oriented method for optimizing the visualization of distribution networks. From the global perspective, we proposed an improved force-directed (FD) algorithm by introducing a space restriction strategy and node–edge repulsion strategy to promote the expansion of the distance between distribution facilities within a limited buffer. We then constructed the constrained Delaunay triangulation to identify the compact districts (CDs) and used a genetic algorithm to optimize the parameters for the improved FD algorithm. A novel visualization evaluation indicator was also proposed for quantitatively assessing the visualizations. From a local perspective, the fisheye algorithm was used to optimize the CDs to further improve the visualization of the distribution network. We verified the proposed methods with real-world data. We used limited spatial displacement in exchange for maximum topology clarity to balance the accurate spatial location and topology clarity.

Taking location-based service (LBS) as the research scenario and aiming at the limitation of visualizing LBS points of interest (POI) in conventional web maps, this article proposes a visualization method of LBS-POI based on tag cloud, which is called “LBS tag cloud”. In this method, the user location is taken as the layout center, and the name of the POI is converted into a text tag and then placed around the center. The tags’ size, color, and placement location are calculated based on other attributes of the POI. The calculation of placement location is at the core of the LBS tag cloud. Firstly, the tag’s initial placement position and layout priority are calculated based on polar coordinates, and the tags are placed in the initial placement position in the order of layout priority. Then, based on the force-directed model, a repulsive force is applied to the tag from the layout center to make it move to a position without overlapping with other tags. During the move, the quadtree partition of the text glyph is used to optimize the detection of overlaps between tags. Taking scenic spots as an example, the experimental results show that the LBS tag cloud can present the attributes and distribution of POIs completely and intuitively and can effectively represent the relationship between the POIs and user location, which is a new visualization form suitable for spatial cognition.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) road networks provide public digital maps underlying many spatial applications such as routing engines and navigation services. However, turning relationships and time restrictions at OSM intersections are lacking in these maps, posing a threat to the accuracy and reliability of the services. In this paper, a new turn information detection method for OSM intersections using the dynamic connection information from crowdsourced trajectory data is proposed to address this problem. In this solution, the OSM intersection structure is extracted and simplified and crowdsourced trajectories are projected onto OSM road segments using an improved Hidden Markov Model (HMM) map matching method that explicitly traces the turning connections in road networks. Optimal path analysis increases the turning support related to short road segments. On this basis, this study transforms complex turning identification scenarios into the simple analyses of traffic connectivity. Furthermore, a voting strategy is used to identify and calculate turning time restrictions. The experimental results, using trajectory data from three cities in China, show that the turning relationships can be detected at a precision of 90.71% with a recall of 96.55% and an F1-value of 93.54% in Shanghai. For Wuhan, the precision is 95.33% and the recall is 95.00%, with an F1-value of 95.16%. The precision and recall when identifying turning time restrictions both reach 90% in Xiamen. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed turning detection method.

Abstract In recent years, with the promotion of policies and technologies, a large number of distributed generations are connected to the urban distribution network in various forms. At the same time, the flexible DC transmission technology has become mature and gradually applied to the distribution network. In this condition, the AC/DC hybrid distribution networks with flexible regulation ability will be the trend of urban distribution network. This paper accurately considers the loss of voltage source converter, and proposes a unified iterative power flow method for AC/DC hybrid distribution network, which takes the voltage source converter control modes into account. Because of the uncertainties of the distributed generations and loads, a random fuzzy power flow model is proposed, in which cumulant method is applied in the random stage. In the fuzzy stage, the fuzzy simulation technology is applied. Finally, an improved PG&E 69‐Bus system is taken as an example to verify the effectiveness of the unified iterative method and the random fuzzy power flow calculation, and put forward some suggestions for the operation of distribution network with distributed generations.

Abstract Understanding the movement of pedestrians and predicting their future trajectory can be very important in intelligent transportation systems because accurate pedestrian trajectory prediction will improve the level of autonomous driving technology and reduce traffic accidents. The authors address this problem with a social graph convolutional long short‐term memory neural network architecture by considering the movement information of each pedestrian and its interaction with neighbours. Specifically, the authors use a graph to model pedestrian walking state where nodes denote the pedestrian movement information, and edges represent the interactions between pairwise pedestrians. An end‐to‐end architecture that combines a sequence‐to‐sequence model with a graph convolutional network to learn the movement features and interaction features is used. To capture the interaction influence on different pedestrians, an emotion gate to refine the learned features and filter out useless information is introduced. A companion loss function to increase the ability of the network to capture ‘walking in groups’ behaviour is further proposed. Through experiments on two public datasets (ETH and UCY), the authors prove that our method outperforms the previous methods.

Without explicit description of map application themes, it is difficult for users to discover desired map resources from massive online Web Map Services (WMS). However, metadata-based map application theme extraction is a challenging multi-label text classification task due to limited training samples, mixed vocabularies, variable length and content arbitrariness of text fields. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-label text classification method, Text GCN-SW-KNN, based on geographic semantics and collaborative training to improve classification accuracy. The semi-supervised collaborative training adopts two base models, i.e. a modified Text Graph Convolutional Network (Text GCN) by utilizing Semantic Web, named Text GCN-SW, and widely-used Multi-Label K-Nearest Neighbor (ML-KNN). Text GCN-SW is improved from Text GCN by adjusting the adjacency matrix of the heterogeneous word document graph with the shortest semantic distances between themes and words in metadata text. The distances are calculated with the Semantic Web of Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) and WordNet dictionaries. Experiments on both the WMS and layer metadata show that the proposed methods can achieve higher F1-score and accuracy than state-of-the-art baselines, and demonstrate better stability in repeating experiments and robustness to less training data. Text GCN-SW-KNN can be extended to other multi-label text classification scenario for better supporting metadata enhancement and geospatial resource discovery in Earth Science domain.

Remote sensing imagery typically comprises successive background contexts and complex objects. Global average pooling is a popular choice to connect the convolutional and fully connected (FC) layers for the deep convolution network. This article equips the networks with another pooling strategy, namely the deep object-centric pooling (DOCP), to pool convolutional features considering the location of an object within the scene image. The proposed DOCP network structure consists of the following two steps: inferring object's location and separately pooling the foreground and background features to generate an object-level representation. Specifically, a spatial context module is presented to learn the location of the object of interest in the scene image. Then, the convolutional feature maps are pooled separately in the foreground and background of the object. Finally, the FC layer concatenates these pooled features and is followed by a batch normalization layer, a dropout layer, and a softmax layer. Two challenging datasets are employed to validate our approach. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DOCP-net can outperform the corresponding pooling methods and achieve a better classification performance than other pretrained convolutional neural network-based scene classification methods.

Image captioning has gradually gained attention in the field of artificial intelligence and become an interesting and challenging task for image understanding. It needs to identify important objects in images, extract attributes, tell relationships, and help the machine generate human-like descriptions. Recent works in deep neural networks have greatly improved the performance of image caption models. However, machines are still unable to imitate the way humans think, talk and communicate, so image captioning remains an ongoing task. It is thus very important to keep up with the latest research and results in the field of image captioning whereas publications on this topic are numerous. Our work aims to help researchers to have a macro-level understanding of image captioning from four aspects: spatial-temporal distribution characteristics, collaborative networks, trends in subject research, and historical evolutionary path. We employ scientometric visualization methods to achieve this goal. The results show that China has published the largest amount of publications in image captioning, but the United States has the greatest impact on research in this area. Besides, thirteen academic groups are identified in the field of image description, with institutions such as Microsoft, Google, Australian National University, and Georgia Institute of Technology being the most prominent research institutions. Meanwhile, we find that evaluation methods, datasets, novel image captioning models based on generative adversarial networks, reinforcement learning, and Transformer, as well as remote sensing image captioning, are the new research trends. Lastly, we conclude that image captioning research has gone through three major development stages from 2010 to 2020, and on this basis, we propose a more comprehensive taxonomy of image captioning.

Abstract As the world's fifth‐largest economy entity, California (CA) is vulnerable to climate changes especially the magnitude of winter (wet season) precipitation that is closely linked to regional drought severity, vegetation growth, and wildfire activities. However, the fate of CA precipitation in the future remains highly uncertain, for example, the state‐of‐the‐art Earth system models (ESMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) projected −3% to +42% and −27% to +63% precipitation changes in northern and central‐southern CA, respectively, under the high greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenario (SSP585). In this work, we applied the Pareto optimality concept and used observed teleconnection patterns (causal relationships between ocean regions and CA precipitation) to mechanistically constrain CMIP6 projected CA precipitations. We estimated that precipitation will robustly increase by 0.4–1.3 mm d−1 (10–34%) over northern CA and increase by 0.1–0.5 mm d−1 (7–32%) over central‐southern CA by the end of the 21st century compared with present‐day. Up to 71% of ESM projection uncertainties were reduced mainly due to the strong and consistent causal relationship between North American west coast sea level pressure and CA precipitation in both observations and CMIP6 models. Our results suggest that teleconnection patterns are powerful mechanistic constraints that can help explain and reduce uncertainties in ESM projections.

Current vehicle recognition methods are less concerned simultaneously with: (1) the scale difference between vehicles and other objects in urban city; and (2) the impact of physical characteristics of vehicles. Based on the region growth of relative tension, a method for measuring the similarity of side projection profile of a vehicle’s body is proposed for recognizing vehicles. First, region growth of relative tension is used to divide 3D point clouds into a series of spatial regions. Point clouds in these regions are projected to a 2D plane. Then, relevant 2D features are extracted, including side projection profile of vehicle body and sizes of vehicles. Screening by these relevant features, part of these regions, and point clouds inside them which conforms to the similarity measurement conditions of vehicles are selected. Quantitative evaluations on the selected data set show that the proposed algorithm achieves a recall, precision, and F-score of 0.837, 0.979, and 0.902, respectively, in recognizing vehicles. Comparative studies demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

With the rapid development of web service technology, automatic land cover web service composition has become one of the key challenges in solving complex geoprocessing tasks of land cover. Service composition requires the creation of service chains based on semantic information about the services and all the constraints that should be respected. Artificial intelligence (AI) planning algorithms have recently significantly progressed in solving web service composition problems. However, the current approaches lack effective constraints to guarantee the accuracy of automatic land cover service composition. To address this challenge, the paper proposes a domain constraints-driven automatic service composition approach for online land cover geoprocessing. First, a land cover service ontology was built to semantically describe land cover tasks, data, and services, which assist in constructing domain constraints. Then, a constraint-aware GraphPlan algorithm was proposed, which constructs a service planning graph and searches services based on the domain constraints for generating optimal web service composition solutions. In this paper, the above method was integrated into a web prototype system and a case study for the online change detection automatic geoprocessing was implemented to test the accuracy of the method. The experimental results show that with this method, a land cover service chain can generate automatically by user desire objective and domain constraints, and the service chain execution result is more accurate.

Traffic forecasting in urban area has attracted substantial attention in recent years due to its significant assitance for traffic dispatching and trip planning. However, this task is very challenging due to the complex dependencies inherent in the traffic process. In our study, recent and periodic dependencies are identified and used to describe the corresponding near-term and long-term effects of historical traffic data on future traffic states. Subsequently, during the recent dependency modeling, each road is found to correlate with its adjacent roads through traffic flow diffusion, then the correlation intensities are quantified and used to choose strongly correlated roads to build a critical road sequence. While for the periodic dependency modeling, since the historical speed series of a road segment exhibits multi-frequency attributes (i.e., low-frequency daily period and high-frequency stochastic fluctuation), wavelet transform is conducted to decompose the original speed series into low and high-frequency sub-series. On these bases, we propose a hybrid traffic speed forecasting model, flow and wavelet-integrated spatio-temporal network (FW-STN). In the FW-STN, the recent features are captured by the convolutional neural network (CNN) with near-term traffic data from the derived critical road sequence, and the periodic features are captured by the long short-term memory (LSTM) with the low and high-frequency sub-series. Both the recent and periodic features are then fused to conduct the final prediction. Experimental results on real traffic data show that the proposed approach outperforms nine state-of-the-art methods (with improvements of 3% ~15% in mean average percentage error).

Massive maps have been shared as Web Map Service (WMS) from various providers, which could be used to facilitate people's daily lives and support space analysis and management. The theme classification of maps could help users efficiently find maps and support theme-related applications. Traditionally, metadata is usually used in analyzing maps content, few papers use maps, especially legends. In fact, people usually considers metadata, maps and legends together to understand what maps tell, however, no study has tried to exploit how to combine them. This paper proposes a method to fuse them with the purpose of classifying map themes, named latent feature based multimodality fusion for theme classification (LFMF-TC). Firstly, a multimodal dataset is created that supports the supervised classification on map themes. Secondly, textual and visual features are designed for metadata, maps, and legends using some advanced techniques. Thirdly, a latent feature based fusion method is proposed to fuse the multimodal features on the feature level. Finally, a neural network classifier is implemented using supervised learning on the multimodal dataset. In addition, a web-based collaboration platform is developed to facilitate users in labeling multimodal samples through an interactive Graphical User Interface (GUI). Extensive experiments are designed and implemented, whose results prove that LFMF-TC could significantly improve the classification accuracy. In theory, the LFMF-TC could be used for other applications with few modifications.

The service network is capable of addressing large-scale service composition. However, existing service network works still have several limitations. Prior knowledge, such as expert-defined service chains, is not incorporated into the service network. QoS constraints are less considered in the service network, and thus the generated service chain does not always satisfy the optimal QoS constraints. Additionally, some basic services also require outputs to be used directly as inputs, which the service network cannot provide. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a geospatial service web (GSW) model named SR-QoS-GSW that incorporates service semantic relationships and QoS information. The SR-QoS-GSW model consists of atomic services and composite services that consider QoS, processing services, data services, and relationships among them. A SR-QoS-GSW prototype was developed using 570 atomic services and 27 composite services and evaluated using two case studies—a river network extraction and an urban housing selection. Then, the information entropy and time complexity between SR-QoS-GSW and the existing service network were compared. The results show that geospatial service chains can be created more efficiently by incorporating existing service chains as composite services. Integrating QoS information into the GSW would allow service composition algorithms to generate service chains that satisfy optimal QoS constraints. The outputs of services used as new inputs with additional self-matching relationships also give the service network greater flexibility. Finally, the analysis of the information entropy and time complexity verified the increased diversity and decreased the search space of the SR-QoS-GSW.

Spatial autocorrelation describes the interdependent relationship between the realizations or observations of a variable that is distributed across a geographical landscape, which may be divided into different units/areas according to natural or political boundaries. Researchers of Geographical Information Science (GIS) always consider spatial autocorrelation. However, spatial autocorrelation research covers a wide range of disciplines, not only GIS, but spatial econometrics, ecology, biology, etc. Since spatial autocorrelation relates to multiple disciplines, it is difficult gain a wide breadth of knowledge on all its applications, which is very important for beginners to start their research as well as for experienced scholars to consider new perspectives in their works. Scientometric analyses are conducted in this paper to achieve this end. Specifically, we employ scientometrc indicators and scientometric network mapping techniques to discover influential journals, countries, institutions, and research communities; key topics and papers; and research development and trends. The conclusions are: (1) journals categorized into ecological and biological domains constitute the majority of TOP journals;(2) northern American countries, European countries, Australia, Brazil, and China contribute the most to spatial autocorrelation-related research; (3) eleven research communities consisting of three geographical communities and eight communities of other domains were detected; (4) hot topics include spatial autocorrelation analysis for molecular data, biodiversity, spatial heterogeneity, and variability, and problems that have emerged in the rapid development of China; and (5) spatial statistics-based approaches and more intensive problem-oriented applications are, and still will be, the trend of spatial autocorrelation-related research. We also refine the results from a geographer’s perspective at the end of this paper.

Social media is increasingly being used to obtain timely flood information to assist flood disaster management and situational awareness. However, since data in social media are massive, redundant, and unstructured, it is tricky to intuitively and clearly obtain effective information. To automatically obtain clear flood information and deduce flood development processes from social media, the authors of this paper propose an event-based and multi-level modeling approach including a data model and two methods. Through the hierarchical division of events (division into spatial object, phase, and attribute status), the flood information structure (including time, space, topic, emotion, and disaster condition) is defined. We built an entity construction method and a development process deduction method to achieve the automatic transition from cluttered data to orderly flood development processes. Taking the flooding event of the Yangtze and Huai Rivers in 2020 as an example, we successfully obtained true flood information and development process from social media data, which verified the effectiveness of the model and methods. Meanwhile, spatiotemporal pattern mining was carried out by using entities from different levels. The results showed that the flood was from west to east and the damage level was positively correlated with the number of flood-related social media texts, especially emotional texts. In summary, through the model and methods in this paper, clear flood information and dynamic development processes can be quickly and automatically obtained, and the spatiotemporal patterns of flood entities can be examined. It is beneficial to extract timely flood information and public sentiments towards flood events in order to perform better disaster relief and post-disaster management.

As a crucial part of the Intelligent Transportation System, traffic forecasting is of great help for traffic management and guidance. However, predicting short-term traffic conditions on a large-scale road network is challenging due to the complex spatio-temporal dependencies found in traffic data. Previous studies used Euclidean proximity or topological adjacency to explore the spatial correlation of traffic flows, but did not consider the higher-order connectivity patterns exhibited in a road network, which have a significant influence on traffic propagation. Meanwhile, traffic sequences display distinct multiple time-frequency properties, yet few researchers have made full use of this resource. To fill this gap, we propose a novel hybrid framework - Wavelet-based Higher-order Spatial-Temporal method (Wavelet-HST) to accurately predict network-scale traffic speeds. Wavelet-HST first uses discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to decompose raw traffic data into several components with different frequency sub-bands. Then a motif-based graph convolutional recurrent neural network (Motif-GCRNN) is proposed to learn the higher-order spatio-temporal dependencies of traffic speeds from low-frequency components, and auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) models are employed to simulate random fluctuations from the high-frequency components. We evaluate the framework on a traffic dataset collected in Chengdu, China, and experimental results demonstrate that Wavelet-HST outperforms six state-of-art prediction methods by an improvement of 7.8% ~10.5% in the root mean square error.

Accurate road maps are fundamental to a wide range of applications, such as navigation, transportation and urban planning. With the rapid development of Globe Position System (GPS) and Remote Sensing (RS), abundant and continuously updated spatiotemporal data are available for road map building. However, using single data source inevitably results in limited performance on road information recognition, due to inherent defects in data, such as the noise, low sampling rate and uneven density distribution in trajectories, and occluded roads in RS-images. This paper aims to integrate GPS trajectories and RS-images to build road map, which is composed of intersections and links. First, both dynamic and static trajectory characteristics are utilized to capture road features indicated in trajectories, and meanwhile, road features implied in by RS-images are extracted via transfer-learning with an advanced deep neural network. Then, the two distinct types of road features are explored together to learn the potential area of road centerlines based on a variation of U-Net, which refines the U-Net to incorporate the structure characters of road. Finally, a multistep refinement is introduced to extract road centerlines through morphology processing, then derive intersections through connectivity analysis and detect links based on sliding-window. In addition, inspired by vector rasterization, a fast and automatic strategy is developed to create large-scale road dataset to significantly reduce labor and time. Compared with three state-of-the-art segment networks, the proposed network achieves the highest correctness and quality. The experimental results demonstrate that trajectory data and RS image complement each other, which assure the extracted road network possesses both integrity and connectivity.

This paper represents a network-load interaction optimization framework integrated multi-time period flexible random fuzzy uncertain demand response (DR) model, which involved shifting of loads' operation time and uncertain response to the price signal. The network-load interaction is to optimize load profile and network topology under the guidance of electricity price at the aim of achieving the economic and secure operation of the distribution network and at the same time satisfying the consumers' satisfaction. This framework is a two-level framework, which includes the price-based DR level to minimize the daily load variance and maximize the customers' satisfaction, and the reconfiguration level to minimize the network reconfiguration cost and power unbalancing. Firstly, the price-based DR level determines the price and the load profile subject to the multi-time period flexibility and uncertainties of the DR. Then, the reconfiguration level optimizes the network configuration topology according to the load profile and feeds the results back to the price-based DR level. This network-load interaction optimization model is tackled by the proposed multi-objective self-adaptive particle swarm (SAPSO) optimization algorithm. The proposed network-load interaction optimization model is applied to the IEEE33-bus distribution system and a real system. The results show that this model is efficient to solve the network economic operation and load profile optimization problem simultaneously.

Crop type data are an important piece of information for many applications in agriculture. Extracting crop type using remote sensing is not easy because multiple crops are usually planted into small parcels with limited availability of satellite images due to weather conditions. In this research, we aim at producing crop maps for areas with abundant rainfall and small-sized parcels by making full use of Landsat 8 and HJ-1 charge-coupled device (CCD) data. We masked out non-vegetation areas by using Landsat 8 images and then extracted a crop map from a long-term time-series of HJ-1 CCD satellite images acquired at 30-m spatial resolution and two-day temporal resolution. To increase accuracy, four key phenological metrics of crops were extracted from time-series Normalized Difference Vegetation Index curves plotted from the HJ-1 CCD images. These phenological metrics were used to further identify each of the crop types with less, but easier to access, ancillary field survey data. We used crop area data from the Jingzhou statistical yearbook and 5.8-m spatial resolution ZY-3 satellite images to perform an accuracy assessment. The results show that our classification accuracy was 92% when compared with the highly accurate but limited ZY-3 images and matched up to 80% to the statistical crop areas.

Some studies on the impact of traditional land use factors on traffic crashes do not take into account the limitations of spatial heterogeneity and spatial scale. To overcome these limitations this study presents a systematic method based on multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR), which considers spatial heterogeneity and spatial scale differences of different influencing factors, to explore the influence of reclassified points-of-interest (POI) on traffic crashes occurring on weekdays and weekends. Experiments were conducted on 442 communities in Hankou, Wuhan, and the performance of the proposed method was compared against traditional methods based on ordinary least squares (OLS), spatial lag model (SLM), spatial error model (SEM), and geographically weighted regression (GWR). The experiments show that the proposed method yielded the best fitness of models and more accurate model results of local coefficient estimates. The highlights of the results are as follows: There are differences in the scale of the predictor variables. Residential POI, scenic POI, and transportation POI have a global effect on traffic crashes. Commercial service POI and industrial POI affects traffic crashes at the regional scale, while public service POI affects crashes at the local scale. The local coefficient estimates from residential POI and scenic POI have little impact on traffic crashes. During weekdays, more transportation POI in the entire study area leads to more traffic crashes. While on weekends, transportation POI has a significant positive effect on crashes only in some communities. The local coefficient estimates for industrial POI vary at different periods. Commercial service POI and public service POI may increase the risk of crashes in some communities, which can be observed on weekdays and weekends. Exploring the influence of POI on traffic crashes at different periods is helpful for traffic management strategies and in reducing traffic crashes.

Geoinformatics education is a key factor for sustainable development of geo-spatial sciences and industries. There have been a variety of educational activities focusing on education and training, technology transfer, and capability building in photogrammetry, remote sensing, and spatial information science, together known as Geoinformatics. Geoinformatics education is an essential mission and even determinant in the ISPRS society. The paper discusses key issues in Geoinformatics education. It reviews educational activities from the ISPRS perspective and summarizes lessons learned from these actions. A vision towards future trends of Geoinformatics education in the ISPRS is provided.

Traditional co-word networks do not discriminate keywords of researcher interest from general keywords. Co-word networks are therefore often too general to provide knowledge if interest to domain experts. Inspired by the recent work that uses an automatic method to identify the questions of interest to researchers like “problems” and “solutions”, we try to answer a similar question “what sensors can be used for what kind of applications”, which is great interest in sensor- related fields. By generalizing the specific questions as “questions of interest”, we built a knowledge network considering researcher interest, called bipartite network of interest (BNOI). Different from a co-word approaches using accurate keywords from a list, BNOI uses classification models to find possible entities of interest. A total of nine feature extraction methods including N-grams, Word2Vec, BERT, etc. were used to extract features to train the classification models, including naïve Bayes (NB), support vector machines (SVM) and logistic regression (LR). In addition, a multi-feature fusion strategy and a voting principle (VP) method are applied to assemble the capability of the features and the classification models. Using the abstract text data of 350 remote sensing articles, features are extracted and the models trained. The experiment results show that after removing the biased words and using the ten-fold cross-validation method, the F-measure of “sensors” and “applications” are 93.2% and 85.5%, respectively. It is thus demonstrated that researcher questions of interest can be better answered by the constructed BNOI based on classification results, comparedwith the traditional co-word network approach.

Static traffic assignment (STA) models have been widely utilized in the field of strategic transport planning. However, STA models cannot fully represent the dynamic road conditions and suffer from inaccurate assignment during traffic congestion. At the same time, an increasing number of installed sensors have become an important means of detecting dynamic road conditions. To address the shortcomings of STA models, we integrate multi-source traffic sensor datasets and propose a novel data-driven quasi-dynamic traffic assignment model, named DQ-DTA. In this model, records of toll stations are used for time-varying travel demand estimation. GPS trajectory datasets of vehicles are further used to calculate the dynamic link costs of the road network, replacing the imprecise Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) function. Moreover, license plate recognition (LPR) data are used to design a statistical probability-based multipath assignment method to capture travelers’ route choices. The expressway network in the Hunan province is selected as the study area, and several classic STA models are also chosen for performance comparison. Experimental results demonstrate that the accuracy of the proposed DQ-DTA model is about 6% higher than that of the chosen STA models.
