The current study investigated how acute exposure to moderate altitude influences exercise performance in COPD patients, providing novel insights to the underlying physiological mechanisms.Methods: Twenty-nine COPD patients, GOLD grade 2– 3, median (quartile) forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) of 60% predicted (46; 69) performed cycling incremental ramp exercise test (IET) at 490 m and after acute exposure of 2– 6 hours to 2048 m or vice versa, according to a randomized cross-over design. Exercise performance and breath-by-breath analyses of the last 30 seconds of each IET were compared between locations.Results: At 2048 m compared to 490 m, the maximum power output (Wmax) was 77 watts (62;104) vs 88 watts (75;112), median reduction 5 watts (95% CI, 2 to 8, P< 0.05), corresponding to a median reduction of 6% (95% CI, 2 to 11, P< 0.05) compared to 490 m. The peak oxygen uptake (V’O2peak) was 70% predicted (56;86) at 2048 m vs 79% predicted (63;90) at 490 m, median reduction of 6% (95% CI, 3 to 9, P< 0.05). The oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2) at 2048 m was reduced by 8% (95% CI, 4 to 9, P< 0.05) compared to 490 m. The minute ventilation (V’E) increased by 2.8L/min (95% CI, 0.9 to 4.2, P< 0.05) at 2048 m. The maximum heart rate and the subjective sense of dyspnea and leg fatigue did not change.Conclusion: Lowlanders with moderate-to-severe COPD acutely exposed to 2048 m reveal small but significant reduction in cycling IET along with a reduced V’O2peak. Hypoxemia is marked during sleep. In COPD, altitude exposure is associated with an increase in blood pressure (BP) and a decrease in baroreflex-sensitivity (BRS). Whether nocturnal oxygen therapy (NOT) may mitigate these cardiovascular autonomic changes in COPD at altitude is unknown.Materials and Methods: In a randomized placebo-controlled cross-over trial, 32 patients with moderate-to-severe COPD living < 800 m were subsequently allocated to NOT and placebo during acute exposure to altitude. Measurements were done at low altitude at 490 m and during two stays at 2048 m on NOT (3 L/min) and placebo (3 L/min, ambient air) via nasal cannula. Allocation and intervention sequences were randomized. Outcomes of interest were BP, BRS (from beat-to-beat BP measurement), BP variability (BPV), and heart rate.Results: About 23/32 patients finished the trial per protocol (mean (SD) age 66 (5) y, FEV1 62 (14) % predicted) and 9/32 experienced altitude-related illnesses (8 vs 1, p < 0.05 placebo vs NOT). NOT significantly mitigated the altitude-induced increase in systolic BP compared to placebo (Δ median − 5.8 [95% CI − 22.2 to − 1.4] mmHg, p = 0.05) but not diastolic BP (− 3.5 [95% CI − 12.6 to 3.0] mmHg; p = 0.21) or BPV. BRS at altitude was significantly higher in NOT than in placebo (1.7 [95% CI 0.3 to 3.4] ms/mmHg, p = 0.02).Conclusion: NOT may protect from hypoxia-induced autonomic dysregulation upon altitude exposure in COPD and thus protect from a relevant increase in BP and decrease in BRS. Abstract: The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Abstract: The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $\tau_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $\tau_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $\tau_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ are available for $\tau_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data., Comment: 45 pages, 38 tables, 13 figures

Abstract: The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton-proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-$x$ decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha_s$ or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $0.0112 \pm 3.9\,\%_\text{stat} \pm 4.5\,\%_\text{syst} \pm 1.6\,\%_\text{mod}$ in the selected kinematic region of $150< Q^2<1500$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $0.14< y<0.7$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb$^{-1}$, sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. The results show an enhanced discriminating power at lower Bjorken-$x$ among different Monte Carlo event generator predictions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 Tables. Abstract: The radiation pattern within high energy quark- and gluon-initiated jets (jet substructure) is used extensively as a precision probe of the strong force as well as an environment for optimizing event generators with numerous applications in high energy particle and nuclear physics. Looking at electron-proton collisions is of particular interest as many of the complications present at hadron colliders are absent. A detailed study of modern jet substructure observables, jet angularities, in electron-proton collisions is presented using data recorded using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is unbinned and multi-dimensional, using machine learning to correct for detector effects. All of the available reconstructed object information of the respective jets is interpreted by a graph neural network, achieving superior precision on a selected set of jet angularities. Training these networks was enabled by the use of a large number of GPUs in the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab. The particle jets are reconstructed in the laboratory frame, using the kT jet clustering algorithm. Results are reported at high transverse momentum transfer Q2>150GeV2, and inelasticity 0.2

Abstract: The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Abstract: IntroductionMore than 30 million adults are released from incarceration globally each year. Many experience complex physical and mental health problems, and are at markedly increased risk of preventable mortality. Despite this, evidence regarding the global epidemiology of mortality following release from incarceration is insufficient to inform the development of targeted, evidence-based responses. Many previous studies have suffered from inadequate power and poor precision, and even large studies have limited capacity to disaggregate data by specific causes of death, sub-populations or time since release to answer questions of clinical and public health relevance.ObjectivesTo comprehensively document the incidence, timing, causes and risk factors for mortality in adults released from prison.MethodsWe created the Mortality After Release from Incarceration Consortium (MARIC), a multi-disciplinary collaboration representing 29 cohorts of adults who have experienced incarceration from 11 countries. Findings across cohorts will be analysed using a two-step, individual participant data meta-analysis methodology.ResultsThe combined sample includes 1,337,993 individuals (89% male), with 75,795 deaths recorded over 9,191,393 person-years of follow-up.ConclusionsThe consortium represents an important advancement in the field, bringing international attention to this problem. Abstract: We describe the design and implementation of a stable high-power 1064 nm laser system to generate optical lattices for experiments with ultracold quantum gases. The system is based on a low-noise laser amplified by an array of four heavily modified, high-power fiber amplifiers. The beam intensity is stabilized and controlled with a nonlinear feedback loop. Using real-time monitoring of the resulting optical lattice, we find the stability of the lattice site positions to be well below the lattice spacing over the course of hours. The position of the harmonic trap produced by the Gaussian envelope of the lattice beams is stable to about one lattice spacing and the long-term (six-month) relative RMS stability of the lattice spacing itself is 0.5%., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

Abstract: The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_Z$ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1166\,(19)_{\rm exp}\,(24)_{\rm th}$. Complementary, $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1147\,(25)_{\rm tot}$ obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. Abstract: We have characterized UFe₂₊ₓ films prepared by sputter deposition onto fused silica (SiO₂) and Si(111) substrates with the film thickness ranging from 75 nm to 900 nm. The X-ray diffraction results showed an amorphous character of the deposited material. Some of the films showed in addition a pattern of highly textured cubic Laves phase. Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy with 2 MeV He⁺ ions has been used to determine the composition, thickness and concentration depth profile of the films. A large ageing affect was observed within 1 month after that the films were exposed to air. Magnetic measurements revealed TC increasing with relative Fe concentration and reaching approx. 450 K in UFe₃.₀.

Abstract: We demonstrate stable, long-term trapping of fermionic $^6$Li atoms in an optical lattice with MHz trap frequencies for use in a quantum gas microscope. Adiabatic release from the optical lattice in the object plane of a high-numerical-aperture imaging system allows a measurement of the population distribution among the lowest three bands in both radial directions with atom numbers as low as $7\times 10^2$. We measure exponential ground band heating rates as low as 0.014(1) s$^{-1}$ corresponding to a radial ground state $1/e$ lifetime of 71(5) s, fundamentally limited by scattering of lattice photons. For all lattice depths above 2 recoil, we find radial ground state lifetimes $\ge 1.6 \times 10^6$ recoil times., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 pages supplemental material

28. The role of personal networks for knowledge flows in the Cambridge IT cluster

Abstract: It is a widespread assumption in economic geography, regional studies and the economics of innovation that firms located in clusters benefit from personal knowledge networks and technological knowledge spillovers. However, it remains unclear to what extent these benefits actually occur. Furthermore, the spatial dimensions of knowledge networks and the role of different forms of proximity remain underexplored. This thesis addresses these issues by examining the role of personal knowledge networks for research and development (R&D) workers in the Cambridge Information Technology Cluster. The empirical results are based on interviews and a survey with 105 R&D workers in 46 innovation-based firms in the greater Cambridge region, UK. This thesis systematically examines to what extent, how and why different types of extra-firm personal relations lead to knowledge flows. The analysis shows the reasons why extra-firm personal knowledge networks are not important for the work of many R&D workers, in particular non-managerial engineers and developers. Furthermore, the results reveal the social mechanisms of personal knowledge networks. This illustrates that the role of spatial proximity varies for the formation of networks, the maintenance of network relations, and the actual knowledge flows through networks. Overall, the results challenge widespread assumptions in economic geography. They show that most R&D workers have only few local personal knowledge contacts and local technological knowledge spillovers seem very limited. Counter to much of the existing theory, in one of the most innovative and successful high-technology regions in Europe, the vast majority of R&D workers do not perceive a real knowledge benefit from being located next to many innovative firms in the same sector for their work.

Abstract: In this paper we assess the impact of climate shocks on futures markets for agricultural commodities and a set of macroeconomic quantities for multiple high-income economies. To capture relations among countries, markets, and climate shocks, this paper proposes parsimonious methods to estimate high-dimensional panel vector autoregressions. We assume that coefficients associated with domestic lagged endogenous variables arise from a Gaussian mixture model while further parsimony is achieved using suitable global-local shrinkage priors on several regions of the parameter space. Our results point toward pronounced global reactions of key macroeconomic quantities to climate shocks. Moreover, the empirical findings highlight substantial linkages between regionally located shocks and global commodity markets.

Abstract: Supervised machine learning is widely used in biology and deserves more scrutiny. We present a set of community-wide recommendations (DOME) aiming to help establish standards of supervised machine learning validation in biology. Formulated as questions, the DOME recommendations improve the assessment and reproducibility of papers when included as supplementary material. Abstract: Zusammenfassung: Auch die besten verfügbaren evidenzbasierten Therapeutika können das Risiko für das Auftreten von Wirbelkörperfrakturen nur senken, weshalb schmerzhafte osteoporotische und pathologische Wirbelkörperfrakturen nicht völlig zu verhindern sind. Kyphoplastie und Vertebroplastie als minimal-invasive osteoplastische Verfahren sind ursächliche Schmerztherapieverfahren bei schmerzhaften Wirbelsinterungen. Die Indikationsstellung für eines dieser Verfahren erfordert eine interdisziplinäre Einzelfalldiskussion, um die technische Durchführbarkeit, die Sinnhaftigkeit der Indikation und die Einbettung der Durchführung dieser Verfahren in das erforderliche multimodale Langzeittherapiekonzept sicherzustellen. Bei der Kyphoplastie wird durch die Verwendung eines Ballonkatheters stets versucht, den schmerzhaft eingebrochenen Wirbelkörper nicht nur intern zu stabilisieren, sondern gleichzeitig auch aufzurichten, was eher bei akuten Wirbelkörperfrakturen gelingt. Bei der Vertebroplastie erfolgt eine interne Stabilisierung des Wirbelbruchs, wobei verfahrensbedingt häufiger als bei der Kyphoplastie ungewollte Implantatmaterialaustritte aus dem behandelten Wirbelkörper auftreten. Kontrollierte Studien belegen bisher nur für die Kyphoplastie eine langfristige Schmerzreduktion und eine verbesserte Mobilität und Lebensqualität.

Abstract: The radiation pattern within high energy quark- and gluon-initiated jets (jet substructure) is used extensively as a precision probe of the strong force as well as an environment for optimizing event generators with numerous applications in high energy particle and nuclear physics. Looking at electron-proton collisions is of particular interest as many of the complications present at hadron colliders are absent. A detailed study of modern jet substructure observables, jet angularities, in electron-proton collisions is presented using data recorded using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is unbinned and multi-dimensional, using machine learning to correct for detector effects. All of the available reconstructed object information of the respective jets is interpreted by a graph neural network, achieving superior precision on a selected set of jet angularities. Training these networks was enabled by the use of a large number of GPUs in the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab. The particle jets are reconstructed in the laboratory frame, using the $k_{\mathrm{T}}$ jet clustering algorithm. Results are reported at high transverse momentum transfer $Q^2>150$ GeV${}^2$, and inelasticity $0.2 < y < 0.7$. The analysis is also performed in sub-regions of $Q^2$, thus probing scale dependencies of the substructure variables.
