Abstract

We study the directed transport of bosons along a one dimensional lattice in a dissipative setting, where the hopping is only facilitated by coupling to a Markovian reservoir. By combining numerical simulations with a field-theoretic analysis, we investigate the current fluctuations for this process and determine its asymptotic behavior. These findings demonstrate that dissipative bosonic transport belongs to the KPZ universality class and therefore, in spite of the drastic difference in the underlying particle statistics, it features the same coarse grained behavior as the corresponding asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) for fermions. However, crucial differences between the two processes emerge when focusing on the full counting statistics of current fluctuations. By mapping both models to the physics of fluctuating interfaces, we find that dissipative transport of bosons and fermions can be understood as surface growth and erosion processes, respectively. Within this unified description, both the similarities and discrepancies between the full counting statistics of the transport are reconciled. Beyond purely theoretical interest, these findings are relevant for experiments with cold atoms or long-lived quasi-particles in nanophotonic lattices, where such transport scenarios can be realized., Comment: comments welcome

3. Quality Diversity under Sparse Reward and Sparse Interaction: Application to Grasping in Robotics

Abstract

Quality-Diversity (QD) methods are algorithms that aim to generate a set of diverse and high-performing solutions to a given problem. Originally developed for evolutionary robotics, most QD studies are conducted on a limited set of domains - mainly applied to locomotion, where the fitness and the behavior signal are dense. Grasping is a crucial task for manipulation in robotics. Despite the efforts of many research communities, this task is yet to be solved. Grasping cumulates unprecedented challenges in QD literature: it suffers from reward sparsity, behavioral sparsity, and behavior space misalignment. The present work studies how QD can address grasping. Experiments have been conducted on 15 different methods on 10 grasping domains, corresponding to 2 different robot-gripper setups and 5 standard objects. An evaluation framework that distinguishes the evaluation of an algorithm from its internal components has also been proposed for a fair comparison. The obtained results show that MAP-Elites variants that select successful solutions in priority outperform all the compared methods on the studied metrics by a large margin. We also found experimental evidence that sparse interaction can lead to deceptive novelty. 5. Plasma insulin levels are increased by sertraline in rats under oral glucose overload

Abstract

Recognition and control of depression symptoms are important to increase patient compliance with treatment and to improve the quality of life of diabetic patients. Clinical studies indicate that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are better antidepressants for diabetic patients than other drugs. However, preclinical trials have demonstrated that not all SSRI reduce plasma glucose levels. In fact, fluoxetine increases and sertraline decreases glycemia in diabetic and non-diabetic rats. In the present study we evaluated plasma insulin levels during fasting and after glucose overload after treatment with sertraline. Adult male Wistar rats were fasted and treated with saline or 30 mg/kg sertraline and submitted or not to glucose overload (N = 10). Blood was collected and plasma insulin was measured. The mean insulin levels were: fasting group: 25.9 ± 3.86, sertraline + fasting group: 31.10 ± 2.48, overload group: 34.1 ± 3.40, and overload + sertraline group: 43.73 ± 5.14 µU/ml. Insulinemia was significantly increased in the overload + sertraline group. There were no differences between the other groups. No difference in glucose/insulin ratios could be detected between groups. The overload + sertraline group was the only one in which a significant number of individuals exceeded the upper confidence limit of insulin levels. This study demonstrates that sertraline increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion without any change in peripheral insulin sensitivity.

7. Spectral Evidence of Squeezing of a Weakly Damped Driven Nanomechanical Mode

Abstract

Because of the broken time-translation symmetry, in periodically driven vibrational systems fluctuations of different vibration components have different intensities. Fluctuations of one of the components are often squeezed, whereas fluctuations of the other component, which is shifted in phase by {\pi}/2, are increased. Squeezing is a multifaceted phenomenon; it attracts much attention from the perspective of high-precision measurements. Here we demonstrate a new and hitherto unappreciated side of squeezing: its direct manifestation in the spectra of driven vibrational systems. With a weakly damped nanomechanical resonator, we study the spectrum of thermal fluctuations of a resonantly driven nonlinear mode. In the attained sideband-resolved regime, we show that the asymmetry of the spectrum directly characterizes the squeezing. This opens a way to deduce squeezing of thermal fluctuations in strongly underdamped resonators, for which a direct determination by a standard homodyne measurement is impeded by frequency fluctuations. The experimental and theoretical results are in excellent agreement. We further extend the theory to also describe the spectral manifestation of squeezing of quantum fluctuations.

27. Encouraging medical students to become surgeons? Impact of psychological and surgical factors on career choice at medical school

Abstract

Aim: Training decisions are viewed as a problem by the majority of medical students.In the present study we compared sociodemographic and psychological characteristics of students who are interested in surgical training to those who preferred a non-surgical specialty. Furthermore, we examined whether students who wish to be trained as surgeons performed better than their non-surgical counterparts in a course designed to acquire skills in minimally invasive surgery.Method: From October 2020 to January 2021 we performed a cross-sectional survey among 116 medical students prior to their year of practical training at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel. Based on their intended field of specialization, the students were divided into a non-surgical and a surgical group. Sociodemographic and psychological characteristics such as self-efficacy expectations, resilience and stress perception were evaluated and compared between groups. Simultaneously, we compared their surgical performance in two laparoscopic exercises and their self-assessment as surgeons. Statistical differences between the training groups were determined by the Mann-Whitney U test or Pearson's Chi square test. Results: Ninety-two students participated in the study, of whom 64.1% intended to train in a non-surgical specialty and 35.9% in a surgical specialty. Students who wished to be trained as surgeons had higher general self-efficacy expectations (p<0.001) and greater resilience (p=0.009). However, on comparison they had a lower stress level (p=0.047). The inter-group comparison of training results and self-assessment as surgeons revealed no unequivocal differences in surgical performance. Conclusion: Interest in surgical specialties is correlated, among other factors, with the strength of psychological skills such as general self-efficacy expectations, resilience and stress perception. Early attention to these psychological resources in academic training might assist medical students in future career, Zielsetzung: Die Weiterbildungsentscheidung wird von dem Großteil der Medizinstudierenden als schwierig empfunden. Die vorliegende Studie vergleicht die soziodemographischen und psychologischen Merkmale von Studierenden, die sich für ein operatives Weiterbildungsfach interessieren, mit denen, die ein nicht-operatives Fach bevorzugen. Außerdem wird untersucht, ob die Studierenden mit einem operativen Weiterbildungswunsch in einem Kurs zum Erlernen minimal-invasiver Fertigkeiten besser abschneiden als die nicht-operative Vergleichsgruppe.Methodik: Im Zeitraum von Oktober 2020 bis Januar 2021 wurde eine Querschnittsbefragung von 116 Medizinstudierenden vor dem Praktischen Jahr an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel durchgeführt. Ergebnisse: Insgesamt nahmen 92 Studierende an der Untersuchung teil, davon planten 64,1% ihre ärztliche Weiterbildung in einem nicht-operativen und 35,9% in einem operativen Fach. Die Studierenden mit einem operativen Weiterbildungswunsch zeigten eine höhere allgemeine Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung (p<0,001) und eine höhere Ausprägung der Resilienz (p=0,009). Abstract

ABSTRACTIn statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data‐generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence‐generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty—nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer‐review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

Abstract

Introduction Loss of blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity is hypothesised to be one of the earliest microvascular signs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Existing BBB integrity imaging methods involve contrast agents or ionising radiation, and pose limitations in terms of cost and logistics. Arterial spin labelling (ASL) perfusion MRI has been recently adapted to map the BBB permeability non-invasively. The DEveloping BBB-ASL as a non-Invasive Early biomarker (DEBBIE) consortium aims to develop this modified ASL-MRI technique for patient-specific and robust BBB permeability assessments. This article outlines the study design of the DEBBIE cohorts focused on investigating the potential of BBB-ASL as an early biomarker for AD (DEBBIE-AD). Methods and analysis DEBBIE-AD consists of a multicohort study enrolling participants with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment and AD, as well as age-matched healthy controls, from 13 cohorts. The precision and accuracy of BBB-ASL will be evaluated in healthy participants. The clinical value of BBB-ASL will be evaluated by comparing results with both established and novel AD biomarkers. The DEBBIE-AD study aims to provide evidence of the ability of BBB-ASL to measure BBB permeability and demonstrate its utility in AD and ADrelated pathologies. Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval was obtained for 10 cohorts, and is pending for 3 cohorts. The results of the main trial and each of the secondary endpoints will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Abstract

Data analysis workflows in many scientific domains have become increasingly complex and flexible. Here we assess the effect of this flexibility on the results of functional magnetic resonance imaging by asking 70 independent teams to analyse the same dataset, testing the same 9 ex-ante hypotheses1. The flexibility of analytical approaches is exemplified by the fact that no two teams chose identical workflows to analyse the data. This flexibility resulted in sizeable variation in the results of hypothesis tests, even for teams whose statistical maps were highly correlated at intermediate stages of the analysis pipeline. Variation in reported results was related to several aspects of analysis methodology. Notably, a meta-analytical approach that aggregated information across teams yielded a significant consensus in activated regions. Furthermore, prediction markets of researchers in the field revealed an overestimation of the likelihood of significant findings, even by researchers with direct knowledge of the dataset2–5. Our findings show that analytical flexibility can have substantial effects on scientific conclusions, and identify factors that may be related to variability in the analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results emphasize the importance of validating and sharing complex analysis workflows, and demonstrate the need for performing and reporting multiple analyses of the same data. Abstract

In this paper it is shown that a measurement of the relative luminosity changes at the LHC may be obtained by analysing the currents drawn from the high voltage power supplies of the electromagnetic section of the forward calorimeter of the ATLAS detector. The method was verified with a reproduction of a small section of the ATLAS forward calorimeter using proton beams of known beam energies and variable intensities at the U-70 accelerator at IHEP in Protvino, Russia. The experimental setup and the data taking during a test beam run in April 2008 are described in detail. A comparison of the measured high voltage currents with reference measurements from beam intensity monitors shows a linear dependence on the beam intensity. The non-linearities are measured to be less than 0.5 % combining statistical and systematic uncertainties., Comment: 16 pages

Abstract

The characterization of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust shows that bubble burst at the liquid steel surface is the principal source of dust emission. We have therefore developed an experimental device for studying this phenomenon. As in the case of the air-water system, the bubble-burst gives birth to two types of droplets: film drops and jet drops. The jet drop formation is observed with high-speed video. The film drop aerosol is collected on filters and then characterized by means of SEM, granulometric and gravimetric analyses. Results are presented and discussed. The quantification of both types of projections leads to the conclusion that the film drop projections represent the major source of dust. The amount of film drops greatly decreases with the parent bubble size. Under 4.5 mm in bubble diameter, no film drops are formed. Decreasing enough the bubble size would therefore represent an effective solution for reducing drastically the EAF dust emission.

Abstract

[Context.] The hot subdwarf B star HS0702+6043 is known as a large-amplitude, short-period p-mode pulsator of the EC14026 type. Its atmospheric parameters place it at the common boundary between the empirical instability regions of the EC14026 variables and the typically cooler long-period g-mode pulsators of the PG1716 kind. [Aims.] We analyse and interpret the photometric variability of HS0702+6043 in order to explore its asteroseismological potential. [Methods.] We report on rapid wide band CCD photometric observations to follow up on and confirm the serendipitous discovery of multiperiodic long-period luminosity variations with typical time scales of ~1h in HS0702+6043, in addition to the two previously known pulsations at 363s and 383s. In particular, we isolate a relatively low-amplitude (~4 mmag), long-period (3538+-130s) light variation. [Results.] We argue that the most likely origin for this luminosity variation is the presence of an excited g-mode pulsation. If confirmed, HS0702+6043 would constitute a rare addition to the very select class of pulsating stars showing simultaneously parts of their pressure and gravity mode pulsation spectra. The asteroseismological potential of such stars is immense, and HS0702+6043 thus becomes a target of choice for future investigations. While our discovery appears consistent with the location of HS0702+6043 at the common boundary between the two families of pulsating sdB stars, it does challenge theory's current description of stability and driving mechanisms in pulsating B subdwarfs., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Abstract

A full azimuthal phi-wedge of the ATLAS liquid argon end-cap calorimeter has been exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV <= E <= 200 GeV at the CERN SPS. The angular region studied corresponds to the ATLAS impact position around the pseudorapidity interval 1.6 < |eta| < 1.8. The beam test set-up is described. A detailed study of the performance is given as well as the related intercalibration constants obtained. Following the ATLAS hadronic calibration proposal, a first study of the hadron calibration using a weighting ansatz is presented. Abstract

Although most known non-Fermi liquid (NFL) materials are structurally or chemically disordered, the role of this disorder remains unclear. In particular, very few systems have been discovered that may be stoichiometric and well ordered. To test whether U3Ni3Sn4 belongs in this latter class, we present measurements of the x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) of polycrystalline and single-crystal U3Ni3Sn4 samples that are consistent with no measurable local structural disorder. We also present temperature-dependent specific heat data in applied magnetic fields as high as 8 T that show features that are inconsistent with the antiferromagnetic Griffiths' phase model, but do support the conclusion that a Fermi liquid/NFL crossover temperature increases with applied field. These results are inconsistent with theoretical explanations that require strong disorder effects, but do support the view that U3Ni3Sn4 is a stoichiometric, ordered material that exhibits NFL behavior, and is best described as being near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, in press with PRB

Barandun [sup.3] , [...], Glaciers distinct from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets cover an area of approximately 706,000 square kilometres globally.sup.1, with an estimated total volume of 170,000 cubic kilometres, or 0.4 metres of potential sea-level-rise equivalent.sup.2. Retreating and thinning glaciers are icons of climate change.sup.3 and affect regional runoff.sup.4 as well as global sea level.sup.5,6. In past reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, estimates of changes in glacier mass were based on the multiplication of averaged or interpolated results from available observations of a few hundred glaciers by defined regional glacier areas.sup.7-10. For data-scarce regions, these results had to be complemented with estimates based on satellite altimetry and gravimetry.sup.11. These past approaches were challenged by the small number and heterogeneous spatiotemporal distribution of in situ measurement series and their often unknown ability to represent their respective mountain ranges, as well as by the spatial limitations of satellite altimetry (for which only point data are available) and gravimetry (with its coarse resolution). Here we use an extrapolation of glaciological and geodetic observations to show that glaciers contributed 27 [plus or minus] 22 millimetres to global mean sea-level rise from 1961 to 2016. Regional specific-mass-change rates for 2006-2016 range from -0.1 metres to -1.2 metres of water equivalent per year, resulting in a global sea-level contribution of 335 [plus or minus] 144 gigatonnes, or 0.92 [plus or minus] 0.39 millimetres, per year. Although statistical uncertainty ranges overlap, our conclusions suggest that glacier mass loss may be larger than previously reported.sup.11. The present glacier mass loss is equivalent to the sea-level contribution of the Greenland Ice Sheet.sup.12, clearly exceeds the loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet.sup.13, and accounts for 25 to 30 per cent of the total observed sea-level rise.sup.14. Present mass-loss rates indicate that glaciers could almost disappear in some mountain ranges in this century, while heavily glacierized regions will continue to contribute to sea-level rise beyond 2100. The largest collection so far of glaciological and geodetic observations suggests that glaciers contributed about 27 millimetres to sea-level rise from 1961 to 2016, at rates of ice loss that could see the disappearance of many glaciers this century.

We have analysed the three-colour photometry of 34 pulsating red giants that was published by Percy, Wilson and Henry (2001). As is common with semiregulars, many of these stars have long secondary periods (LSPs) of several years, in addition to the usual shorter-period pulsations. We measured pulsation amplitudes in VRI and found that both the V/R and V/I amplitude ratios in most stars are systematically lower for the LSPs that for the shorter periods. 49. Social Influences on Sorority and Fraternity Member Smoking

Abstract

Objective: To understand how the Greek system uniquely influences smoking attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors among college students who belong to a social sorority or fraternity. Participants: Active members of sororities (n = 16) and fraternities (n = 17) were interviewed between February 2013 and October 2015. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted examining the social influences of the Greek system on member smoking. Transcribed interviews were coded and analyzed for themes. Results: Sorority and fraternity members experienced different social influences on smoking. Sorority stigmatization of smoking outside bars or parties caused sorority members to hide their smoking. Fraternity members had no social penalties for smoking and allowed smoking at the fraternity house. Fraternity members influenced both fraternity members and sorority members to smoke by sharing cigarettes and smoking at parties. Conclusions: Sororities and fraternities have created social environments that both promote smoking and stigmatize it, presenting unique challenges in college student smoking prevention and cessation efforts.
