Abstract

The copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) has heralded a new era of chemical biology and biomedicine. However, caveats of the CuAAC include formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other copper‐related toxicity. This limits utility in sensitive biological samples and matrices. Towards addressing these caveats, we synthesized and fully characterized two air and water stable trinuclear Cu(I) dimer complexes. The complexes were stable to oxidation in the presence of hydrogen peroxideand other chelators, which was reasoned to be due to the linear benzimidazole‐Cu‐benzimidazole geometry. Computational investigations of the catalytic cycle implicated two of the three coppers in the trimer complex as the active metal centers. The complexes were shown to catalyze the reaction at far below sub‐toxic concentrations for intracellular click reactions to label triple negative breast cancer cells and compared to the current CuSO4‐THPTA standard. 14. How additives for tin halide perovskites influence the Sn4+ concentration.

Abstract

Tin halide perovskite (Sn-HPs) photovoltaics could potentially equal or exceed the performance of their more toxic Pb-based analogues if defect state densities, particularly originating from the presence of Sn4+, can be significantly decreased. Numerous additives are incorporated into Sn-HPs to minimize the amount of Sn4+, including SnF2, reducing agents such as hydrazine derivatives, and various antioxidants. Despite the frequent use of additives to reduce Sn4+ content, there is limited understanding of how they function and consequently limited guidance for the development of new additives. Herein, we use cyclic voltammetry to probe the redox behavior of SnI2, SnI4, Sn-HP precursor solutions, and 18 different additives. Through 119Sn NMR measurements we show that hydrochloride containing additives undergo halide exchange with SnI4 to form SnIxCly, which results in decreased Sn4+ concentrations and less p-type character in the Sn-HP films. We find that the most effective additive at lowering the Sn4+ content in FASnI3 is not capable of reducing SnI4 or forming SnIxCly, but rather it acts as a sacrificial and coordinating antioxidant. In general, when selecting additives for Sn-HPs it is important to account for the redox potential, coordination with Sn species, ability to react with oxygen, and the potential for halide exchange. Abstract

Perovskite solar cells have garnered and held international research interest, due to ever‐climbing power conversion efficiency values, now >25 %. Some high efficiency configurations utilize a compact TiO2 layer underneath a mesoporous TiO2 layer, both of which require high temperature annealing steps that could hinder perovskite commercialization. To address the high thermal budget, we chose to use inkjet‐printing to combine the two layers into a single TiO2 film, which incorporates both nanoparticle and molecular precursor as well as organic fullerene additives. We printed the ink on fluorine‐doped tin oxide, and after annealing at various temperatures, we found that 400 °C was the optimum annealing temperature for the inkjet‐printed electron transport layers, which is significantly lower than the 500 °C required to anneal typical mesoporous TiO2 films. Abstract

Nanoscale CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite sensitizers are grown by delivering each precursor successively onto the surface of mesoporous (meso) TiO2 electrodes. Using Pb(NO3)2 ions as a lead(II) source and CH3NH3I (MAI) for methylammonium and iodide sources, repetitive cycles of the two dipping steps are successful in growing few nanometer‐sized MAPbI3 gradually on the TiO2 surface inside the meso‐TiO2 film. However, some aggregates are observed on the top surface of the meso‐TiO2 film due to slight dissolution of PbI2 and its accumulation/reaction with MAI at the top surface of the meso‐TiO2 film. To solve this inhomogeneity of the deposition, a nondestructive multiple deposition route for nanoscale MAPbI3 is suggested as a successive precursor layer adsorption and reaction (SPLAR) process where, from the second cycle of deposition, PbI2 is delivered with the help of an ionic liquid compound dissolved in dichloromethane. With this new Pb precursor in less‐polar solvents, nanoscale MAPbI3 sensitizers are grown without dissolution of preformed perovskites or formation of some aggregates at the top surface. After the third cycle of SPLAR deposition, about 7.0 nm–sized MAPbI3 sensitizers are prepared and display enhanced photovoltaic performance (7.18 ± 0.31%) compared with devices obtained from only one cycle (5.74 ± 0.30%). Perovskite solar cells with mesoporous TiO2 electron transport layers have previously reached >22 % efficiency at the laboratory scale (<1 cm2), however, these layers are fabricated using spin‐coating, which is not conducive to large‐scale or high throughput fabrication. This report describes the inkjet printing of open‐pore mesoporous TiO2 thin films, perovskite thin films, and the fabrication of highly efficient perovskite solar cells using these films. Ink formulation and characterization studies, inkjet deposition optimization trials, film characterization, and comparison to spin‐coated layers are described. The printed TiO2 films exhibited an open‐pore morphology and homogeneous surface coverage in films ranging from 1 mm2 to >10 cm2. Perovskite solar cells with printed and pristine (un‐doped) inkjet‐printed TiO2 layers yielded efficiencies of 18.29 %, which were found to outperform cells made with spin‐coated and pristine TiO2 layers (16.91 %). When a quadruple‐cation perovskite absorber containing Cs, formamidinium, methylammonium, and guanidinium was deposited by inkjet‐printing onto the inkjet‐printed TiO2 layer, nearly 12 % average efficiency was reached, with the champion cell reaching 14.11 %. This absorber exhibited higher efficiency and stability than did inkjet‐printed MAPbI3 films deposited on the inkjet‐printed TiO2 film. This report describes the inkjet printing of open‐pore mesoporous TiO2 thin films, perovskite thin films, and the fabrication of highly efficient perovskite solar cells using these films. 39. Effects of A-Site Cation Structure on the Stability of 2D Tin Halide Perovskites

Abstract

Two-dimensional halide perovskites (2D-HPs) are of significant interest for their applications in optoelectronic devices. Part of this increased interest in 2D-HPs stems from their increased stability relative to their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts. Here, the origin of higher stability in 2D-HPs is mainly attributed to the bulky ammonium cation layers, which can act as a blocking layer against moisture and oxygen ingression and ion diffusion. While 2D-HPs have demonstrated increased stability, it is not clear how the structure of the ammonium ions impacts material stability. Herein, we investigate how the structure of ammonium cations, including three n-alkyl ammoniums, phenethylammonium (PEA) and five PEA derivatives, anilinium (An), benzylammonium (BzA), and cyclohexylmethylammonium (CHMA), affects the crystal structure and air, water, and oxygen stability of 2D tin halide perovskites (2D-SnHPs). We find that stability is influenced by several factors, including the molecular packing and intermolecular interactions in the organic layer, steric effects around the ammonium group, the orientation distribution of the 2D sheets, and the hydrophobicity of the perovskite film surface. With superior hydrophobicity, strong interactions between organic molecules, and a high extent of parallel oriented inorganic sheets, the 2-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-ethylammonium (4-TFMPEA) ion forms the most stable 2D-SnHP among the 12 ammonium cations investigated.

Abstract

Research into phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes has grown immensely since their first report. Talented chemists have successfully synthesized complexes capable of emitting from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Tuning the emission energy in a selective manner requires knowledge of how ligand substitution affects not only energy levels such as the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, but also the emissive triplet energy level.
