Search

Ionization drives important chemical and dynamical processes within protoplanetary disks, including the formation of organics and water in the cold midplane and the transportation of material via accretion and magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows. Understanding these ionization-driven processes is crucial for understanding disk evolution and planet formation. We use new and archival ALMA observations of HCO+, H13CO+, and N2H+ to produce the first forward-modeled 2D ionization constraints for the DM Tau protoplanetary disk. We include ionization from multiple sources and explore the disk chemistry under a range of ionizing conditions. Abundances from our 2D chemical models are post-processed using non-LTE radiative transfer, visibility sampling, and imaging, and are compared directly to the observed radial emission profiles. The observations are best fit by a modestly reduced CR ionization rate ($\zeta_{CR}$ ~ 10$^{-18}$ s$^{-1}$) and a hard X-ray spectrum (hardness ratio [HR] = 0.3), which we associate with stellar flaring conditions. Our best-fit model under-produces emission in the inner disk, suggesting that there may be an additional mechanism enhancing ionization in DM Tau's inner disk. The amount of turbulence in protoplanetary discs around young stars is critical for determining the efficiency, timeline, and outcomes of planet formation. It is also difficult to measure. Observations are still limited, but direct measurements of the non-thermal, turbulent gas motion are possible with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Using CO(2-1)/$^{13}$CO(2-1)/C$^{18}$O(2-1) ALMA observations of the disc around IM Lup at ~0.4" (~60 au) resolution we find evidence of significant turbulence, at the level of $\delta v_{\rm turb}=(0.18-0.30)$c$_s$. This result is robust against systematic uncertainties (e.g., amplitude flux calibration, midplane gas temperature, disc self-gravity). We find that gravito-turbulence as the source of the gas motion is unlikely based on the lack of an imprint on the rotation curve from a massive disc, while magneto-rotational instabilities and hydrodynamic instabilities are still possible, depending on the unknown magnetic field strength and the cooling timescale in the outer disc., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 17 pages, 12 figures

The origin and evolution of CO gas in debris disks has been debated since its initial detection. The gas could have a primordial origin, as a remnant of the protoplanetary disk or a secondary exocometary origin. This paper investigates the origin of gas in two debris disks, HD110058 and HD131488, using HST observations of CI and CO, which play critical roles in the gas evolution. We fitted several electronic transitions of CI and CO rovibronic bands to derive column densities and temperatures for each system, revealing high CO column densities ($\sim$3-4 orders of magnitude higher than $\beta$ Pictoris), and low CI/CO ratios in both. Using the exogas model, we simulated the radial evolution of the gas in the debris disk assuming a secondary gas origin. We explored a wide range of CO exocometary release rates and $\alpha$ viscosities, which are the key parameters of the model. Additionally, we incorporated photodissociation due to stellar UV to the exogas model and found that it is negligible for typical CO-rich disks and host stars, even at a few au due to the high radial optical depths in the EUV. We find that the current steady-state secondary release model cannot simultaneously reproduce the CO and CI HST-derived column densities, as it predicts larger CI/CO ratios than observed. Our direct UV measurement of low CI/CO ratios agrees with results derived from recent ALMA findings and may point to vertical layering of CI, additional CI removal, CO shielding processes, or different gas origin scenarios., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Spatially-resolved images of debris disks are necessary to determine disk morphological properties and the scattering phase function (SPF) which quantifies the brightness of scattered light as a function of phase angle. Current high-contrast imaging instruments have successfully resolved several dozens of debris disks around other stars, but few studies have investigated trends in the scattered-light, resolved population of debris disks in a uniform and consistent manner. We have combined Karhunen-Loeve Image Projection (KLIP) with radiative-transfer disk forward modeling in order to obtain the highest quality image reductions and constrain disk morphological properties of eight debris disks imaged by the Gemini Planet Imager at H-band with a consistent and uniformly-applied approach. In describing the scattering properties of our models, we assume a common SPF informed from solar system dust scattering measurements and apply it to all systems. We identify a diverse range of dust density properties among the sample, including critical radius, radial width, and vertical width. We also identify radially narrow and vertically extended disks that may have resulted from substellar companion perturbations, along with a tentative positive trend in disk eccentricity with relative disk width. We also find that using a common SPF can achieve reasonable model fits for disks that are axisymmetric and asymmetric when fitting models to each side of the disk independently, suggesting that scattering behavior from debris disks may be similar to Solar System dust., Comment: 23+5 pages, 12+6 figures, 15 pages of Online Supplemental Material included; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) has excelled in imaging debris disks in the near-infrared. The GPI Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) imaged twenty-four debris disks in polarized $H$-band light, while other programs observed half of these disks in polarized $J$- and/or $K1$-bands. Using these data, we present a uniform analysis of the morphology of each disk to find asymmetries suggestive of perturbations, particularly those due to planet-disk interactions. The multi-wavelength surface brightness, the disk color and geometry permit identification of any asymmetries such as warps or disk offsets from the central star. We find that nineteen of the disks in this sample exhibit asymmetries in surface brightness, disk color, disk geometry, or a combination of the three, suggesting that for this sample, perturbations, as seen in scattered light, are common. The relationship between these perturbations and potential planets in the system are discussed. We also explore correlations among stellar temperatures, ages, disk properties, and observed perturbations. We find significant trends between the vertical aspect ratio and the stellar temperature, disk radial extent, and the dust grain size distribution power-law, $q$. We also confirm a trend between the disk color and stellar effective temperature, where the disk becomes increasingly red/neutral with increasing temperature. We show the first SPHERE/IRDIS and IFS data of the CO-rich debris disc around HD 131488. We use N-body simulations to model both the scattered light images and the SED of the disc in a self-consistent way. We apply the Henyey-Greenstein approximation, Mie theory, and the Discrete Dipole Approximation to model the emission of individual dust grains. Our study shows that only when gas drag is taken into account can we find a model that is consistent with scattered light as well as thermal emission data of the disc. The models suggest a gas surface density of $2\times10^{-5}\,M_\oplus/$au$^2$ which is in agreement with estimates from ALMA observations. Thus, our modelling procedure allows us to roughly constrain the expected amount of gas in a debris disc without actual gas measurements. We also show that the shallow size distribution of the dust leads to a significant contribution of large particles to the overall amount of scattered light. The scattering phase function indicates a dust porosity of $\sim0.2\ldots 0.6$ which is in agreement with a pebble pile scenario for planetesimal growth., Comment: 27 pages, 25 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

RZ Piscium (RZ Psc) is well-known in the variable star field because of its numerous, irregular optical dips in the past five decades, but the nature of the system is heavily debated in the literature. We present multiyear infrared monitoring data from Spitzer and WISE to track the activities of the inner debris production, revealing stochastic infrared variability as short as weekly timescales that is consistent with destroying a 90-km-size asteroid every year. ALMA 1.3 mm data combined with spectral energy distribution modeling show that the disk is compact ($\sim$0.1--13 au radially) and lacks cold gas. The disk is found to be highly inclined and has a significant vertical scale height. These observations confirm that RZ Psc hosts a close to edge-on, highly perturbed debris disk possibly due to migration of recently formed giant planets which might be triggered by the low-mass companion RZ Psc B if the planets formed well beyond the snowlines., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Polarization is a unique tool to study the properties of dust grains of protoplanetary disks and detail the initial conditions of planet formation. Polarization around HL Tau was previously imaged using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Bands 3 (3.1 mm), 6 (1.3 mm), and 7 (0.87 mm), showing that the polarization orientation changes across wavelength $\lambda$. The polarization morphology at Band 7 is predominantly parallel to the disk minor axis but appears azimuthally oriented at Band 3, with the morphology at Band 6 in between the two. We present new ~0.2" (29 au) polarization observations at Q-Band (7.0 mm) using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and at Bands 4 (2.1 mm), 5 (1.5 mm), and 7 using ALMA, consolidating HL Tau's position as the protoplanetary disk with the most complete wavelength coverage in dust polarization. The polarization patterns at Bands 4 and 5 continue to follow the morphological transition with wavelength previously identified in Bands 3, 6, and 7. Based on the azimuthal variation, we decompose the polarization into contributions from scattering ($s$) and thermal emission ($t$). We find that $s$ decreases slowly with increasing $\lambda$, and $t$ increases more rapidly with $\lambda$ which are expected from optical depth effects of toroidally aligned, scattering prolate grains. The relatively weak $\lambda$ dependence of $s$ is consistent with large, porous grains. The origin and evolution of gas in debris disks is still not well understood. Secondary gas production from cometary material or a primordial origin have been proposed. So far, observations have mostly concentrated on CO, with only few C observations available. We create an overview of the C and CO content of debris disk gas and use it test state-of-the-art models. We use new and archival ALMA observations of CO and CI emission, complemented by CII data from Herschel, for a sample of 14 debris disks. This expands the number of disks with ALMA measurements of both CO and CI by ten disks. We present new detections of CI emission towards three disks: HD 21997, HD 121191 and HD 121617. We use a simple disk model to derive gas masses and column densities. We find that current state-of-the-art models of secondary gas production overpredict the neutral carbon content of debris disk gas. This does not rule out a secondary origin, but might indicate that the models require an additional C removal process. Alternatively, the gas might be produced in transient events rather than a steady-state collisional cascade. We also test a primordial gas origin by comparing our results to a simplified thermo-chemical model. This yields promising results, but more detailed work is required before a conclusion can be reached. The radial structure of debris discs can encode important information about their dynamical and collisional history. In this paper we present a 3-phase analytical model to analyse the collisional evolution of solids in debris discs, focusing on their joint radial and temporal dependence. Consistent with previous models, we find that as the largest planetesimals reach collisional equilibrium in the inner regions, the surface density of dust and solids becomes proportional to $\sim r^{2}$ within a certain critical radius. We present simple equations to estimate the critical radius and surface density of dust as a function of the maximum planetesimal size and initial surface density in solids (and vice versa). We apply this model to ALMA observations of 7 wide debris discs. We use both parametric and non-parametric modelling to test if their inner edges are shallow and consistent with collisional evolution. We find that 4 out of 7 have inner edges consistent with collisional evolution. Three of these would require small maximum planetesimal sizes below 10 km, with HR 8799's disc potentially lacking solids larger than a few centimeters. The remaining systems have inner edges that are much sharper, which requires maximum planetesimal sizes $\gtrsim10$ km. Their sharp inner edges suggest they could have been truncated by planets, which JWST could detect. In the context of our model, we find that the 7 discs require surface densities below a Minimum Mass Solar Nebula, avoiding the so-called disc mass problem. Finally, during the modelling of HD 107146 we discover that its wide gap is split into two narrower ones, which could be due to two low-mass planets formed within the disc., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 21 pages, 11 figures

Debris disks are dusty, optically thin structures around main sequence stars. HD 106906AB is a short-period stellar binary, host to a wide separation planet, HD 106906b, and a debris disk. Only a few known systems include a debris disk and a directly imaged planet, and HD 106906 is the only one in which the planet is exterior to the disk. The debris disk is edge-on and highly asymmetric in scattered light. Here we resolve the disk structure at a resolution of 0.38" (39 au) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. We model the disk with both a narrow and broad ring of material, and find that a radially broad, axisymmetric disk between radii of $\sim$50$-$100 au is able to capture the structure of the observations without evidence of any asymmetry or eccentricity, other than a tentative stellocentric offset. We place stringent upper limits on both the gas and dust content of a putative circumplanetary disk. We interpret the ALMA data in concert with scattered light observations of the inner ring and astrometric constraints on the planet's orbit, and find that the observations are consistent with a large-separation, low-eccentricity orbit for the planet. A dynamical analysis indicates that the central binary can efficiently stabilize planetesimal orbits interior to $\sim$100 au, which relaxes the constraints on eccentricity and semimajor axis somewhat. The observational constraints are consistent with in situ formation via gravitational instability, but cannot rule out a scattering event as the origin for HD 106906b's current orbit.

Debris disks are scaled-up analogs of the Kuiper Belt in which dust is generated by collisions between planetesimals. In the "collisional cascade" model of debris disks, dust lost to radiation pressure and winds is constantly replenished by grinding collisions between planetesimals. The model assumes that collisions are destructive and involve large velocities; this assumption has not been tested beyond our Solar System. We present 0"25 ($\approx$2.4 au) resolution observations of the $\lambda$ = 450 $\mu$m dust continuum emission from the debris disk around the nearby M dwarf AU Microscopii with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We use parametric models to describe the disk structure, and an MCMC algorithm to explore the posterior distributions of the model parameters; we fit the structure of the disk to both our data and archival $\lambda = 1.3$ mm data (Daley et al. 2019), from which we obtain two aspect ratio measurements at 1.3 mm ($h_{1300}$ = 0.025$^{+0.008}_{-0.002}$) and at 450 $\mu$m ($h_{450}$ = 0.019$^{+0.006}_{-0.001}$), as well as the grain size distribution index $q =$ 3.03 $\pm$ 0.02. Contextualizing our aspect ratio measurements within the modeling framework laid out in Pan & Schlichting (2012), we derive a power law index of velocity dispersion as a function of grain size $p = 0.28 \pm 0.06$ for the AU Mic debris disk. This result implies that smaller bodies are more easily disrupted than larger bodies by collisions, which is inconsistent with the strength regime usually assumed for such small bodies. We present 870 $\mu$m ALMA polarization observations of thermal dust emission from the iconic, edge-on debris disk $\beta$ Pic. While the spatially resolved map does not exhibit detectable polarized dust emission, we detect polarization at the $\sim$3$\sigma$ level when averaging the emission across the entire disk. The corresponding polarization fraction is $P_\textrm{frac}$ = $0.51 \pm 0.19$%. The polarization position angle $\chi$ is aligned with the minor axis of the disk, as expected from models of dust grains aligned via radiative alignment torques (RAT) with respect to a toroidal magnetic field ($B$-RAT) or with respect to the anisotropy in the radiation field ($k$-RAT). When averaging the polarized emission across the outer versus inner thirds of the disk, we find that the polarization arises primarily from the SW third. We perform synthetic observations assuming grain alignment via both $k$-RAT and $B$-RAT. Both models produce polarization fractions close to our observed value when the emission is averaged across the entire disk. When we average the models in the inner versus outer thirds of the disk, we find that $k$-RAT is the likely mechanism producing the polarized emission in $\beta$ Pic. A comparison of timescales relevant to grain alignment also yields the same conclusion. For dust grains with realistic aspect ratios (i.e., $s > 1.1$), our models imply low grain-alignment efficiencies., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. The nature of the gas in CO-rich debris discs remains poorly understood, as it could either be a remnant from the earlier Class II phase or of secondary origin, driven by the destruction of icy planetesimals. The aim of this paper was to elucidate the origin of the gas content in the debris discs via various simple molecules that are often detected in the less-evolved Class II discs. We present millimetre molecular line observations of nine circumstellar discs around A-type stars: four CO-rich debris discs (HD 21997, HD 121617, HD 131488, HD 131835) and five old Herbig Ae protoplanetary discs (HD 139614, HD 141569, HD 142666, HD 145718, HD 100453). The sources were observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Bands 5 and 6 with 1-2'' resolution. The Herbig Ae discs are detected in the CO isotopologues, CN, HCN, HCO$^+$, C2H, and CS lines. In contrast, only CO isotopologues are detected in the debris discs, showing a similar amount of CO to that found in the Herbig Ae protoplanetary discs. Using chemical and radiative transfer modelling, we show that the abundances of molecules other than CO in debris discs are expected to be very low. We consider multiple sets of initial elemental abundances with various degrees of H2 depletion. We find that the HCO+ lines should be the second brightest after the CO lines and that their intensities strongly depend on the overall CO/H$_2$ ratio of the gas. Surprisingly strong CO emission has been observed from more than a dozen debris disks around nearby main-sequence stars. The origin of this CO is unclear, in particular whether it is left over from the protoplanetary disk phase or is second-generation material released from collisions between icy bodies like debris dust. The primary unexplored avenue for distinguishing the origin of the material is understanding its molecular composition. Here we present a deep search for five molecules (CN, HCN, HCO+, SiO, and CH3OH) in the debris disk around 49 Ceti. We take advantage of the high sensitivity of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Band 7 to integrate for 3.2 hours at modest spatial (1") and spectral (0.8 km/s) resolution. Our search yields stringent upper limits on the flux of all surveyed molecular lines, which imply abundances relative to CO that are orders of magnitude lower than those observed in protoplanetary disks and Solar System comets, and also those predicted in outgassing models of second-generation material. However, if CI shielding is responsible for extending the lifetime of any CO produced in second-generation collisions, as proposed by Kral et al. (2018), then the line ratios do not reflect true ice phase chemical abundances, but rather imply that CO is shielded by its own photodissociation product, CI, but other molecules are rapidly photodissociated by the stellar and interstellar radiation field., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Debris disks are tenuous, dusty belts surrounding main sequence stars generated by collisions between planetesimals. HD 206893 is one of only two stars known to host a directly imaged brown dwarf orbiting interior to its debris ring, in this case at a projected separation of 10.4 au. Here we resolve structure in the debris disk around HD 206893 at an angular resolution of 0.6" (24 au) and wavelength of 1.3 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We observe a broad disk extending from a radius of <51 au to 194^{+13}_{-2} au. We model the disk with a continuous, gapped, and double power-law model of the surface density profile, and find strong evidence for a local minimum in the surface density distribution near a radius of 70 au, consistent with a gap in the disk with an inner radius of 63^{+8}_{-16} au and width 31^{+11}_{-7} au. Gapped structure has been observed in four other debris disks -- essentially every other radially resolved debris disk observed with sufficient angular resolution and sensitivity with ALMA -- and could be suggestive of the presence of an additional planetary-mass companion., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Vega planetary system hosts the archetype of extrasolar Kuiper belts, and is rich in dust from the sub-au region out to 100's of au, suggesting intense dynamical activity. We present ALMA mm observations that detect and resolve the outer dust belt from the star for the first time. The interferometric visibilities show that the belt can be fit by a Gaussian model or by power-law models with a steep inner edge (at 60-80 au). The belt is very broad, extending out to at least 150-200 au. We strongly detect the star and set a stringent upper limit to warm dust emission previously detected in the infrared. We discuss three scenarios that could explain the architecture of Vega's planetary system, including the new {ALMA} constraints: no outer planets, a chain of low-mass planets, and a single giant planet. The planet-less scenario is only feasible if the outer belt was born with the observed sharp inner edge. If instead the inner edge is currently being truncated by a planet, then the planet must be $\gtrsim$6 M$_{\oplus}$ and at $\lesssim71$ au to have cleared its chaotic zone within the system age. In the planet chain scenario, outward planet migration and inward scattering of planetesimals could produce the hot and warm dust observed in the inner regions of the system. In the single giant planet scenario, an asteroid belt could be responsible for the warm dust, and mean motion resonances with the planet could put asteroids on star-grazing orbits, producing the hot dust., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Turbulence is a crucial factor in many models of planet formation, but it has only been directly constrained among a small number of planet forming disks. Building on the upper limits on turbulence placed in disks around HD 163296 and TW Hya, we present ALMA CO J=2-1 line observations at $\sim0.3"$ (20-50 au) resolution and 80 ms$^{-1}$ channel spacing of the disks around DM Tau, MWC 480, and V4046 Sgr. Using parametric models of disk structure, we robustly detect non-thermal gas motions around DM Tau of between 0.25 c$_s$ and 0.33 c$_s$, with the range dominated by systematic effects, making this one of the only systems with directly measured non-zero turbulence. Using the same methodology, we place stringent upper limits on the non-thermal gas motion around MWC 480 ($<$0.08c$_s$) and V4046 Sgr ($<$0.12 c$_s$). The preponderance of upper limits in this small sample, and the modest turbulence levels consistent with dust studies, suggest that weak turbulence ($\alpha\lesssim10^{-3}$) may be a common, albeit not universal, feature of planet-forming disks. We report on two millimeter flares detected by ALMA at 220 GHz from AU Mic, a nearby M dwarf. The larger flare had a duration of only $\sim35$ sec, with peak $L_{R}=2\times10^{15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$, and lower limit on linear polarization of $|Q/I|>0.12\pm0.04$. We examine the characteristics common to these new AU Mic events and those from Proxima Cen previously reported in MacGregor et al. (2018) - namely short durations, negative spectral indices, and significant linear polarization - to provide new diagnostics of conditions in outer stellar atmospheres and details of stellar flare particle acceleration. The event rates ($\sim20$ and $4$ events day$^{-1}$ for AU Mic and Proxima Cen, respectively) suggest that millimeter flares occur commonly but have been undetected until now. Analysis of the flare observing frequency and consideration of possible incoherent emission mechanisms confirms the presence of MeV electrons in the stellar atmosphere occurring as part of the flare process. The spectral indices point to a hard distribution of electrons. The short durations and lack of pronounced exponential decay in the light curve are consistent with formation in a simple magnetic loop, with radio emission predominating from directly precipitating electrons. We consider the possibility of both synchrotron and gyrosynchrotron emission mechanisms, although synchrotron is favored given the linear polarization signal. This would imply that the emission must be occurring in a low density environment of only modest magnetic field strength. We present here new observations of the eccentric debris ring surrounding the Gyr-old solar-type star HD 202628: at millimeter wavelengths with ALMA, at far-infrared wavelengths with \textit{Herschel}, and in scattered light with \textit{HST}. The ring inner edge is found to be consistent between ALMA and \textit{HST} data. As radiation pressure affects small grains seen in scattered-light, the ring appears broader at optical than at millimeter wavelengths. The best fit to the ring seen with ALMA has inner and outer edges at $143.1 \pm 1.7$ AU and $165.5 \pm 1.4$, respectively, and an inclination of $57.4^\circ \pm 0.4$ from face-on. The offset of the ring centre of symmetry from the star allows us to quantify its eccentricity to be $e=0.09_{-0.01}^{+0.02}$. This eccentric feature is also detected in low resolution \textit{Herschel}/PACS observations, under the form of a pericenter-glow. Combining the infrared and millimeter photometry, we retrieve a disk grain size distribution index of $\sim -3.4$, and therefore exclude in-situ formation of the inferred belt-shaping perturber, for which we provide new dynamical constraints. Finally, ALMA images show four point-like sources that exceed 100$\,\mu$Jy, one of them being just interior to the ring. Although the presence of a background object cannot be excluded, we cannot exclude either that this source is circumplanetary material surrounding the belt-shaper, in which case degeneracies between its mass and orbital parameters could be lifted, allowing us to fully characterize such a distant planet in this mass and age regime for the very first time., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures

Previous observations revealed the existence of CO gas at nearly protoplanetary level in several dust-rich debris disks around young A-type stars. Here we used the ALMA 7m-array to measure $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O emission toward two debris disks, 49 Cet and HD 32297, and detected similarly high CO content ($>$0.01M$_\oplus$). These high CO masses imply a highly efficient shielding of CO molecules against stellar and interstellar ultraviolet photons. Adapting a recent secondary gas disk model that considers both shielding by carbon atoms and self-shielding of CO, we can explain the observed CO level in both systems. Based on the derived gas densities we suggest that, in the HD 32297 disk, dust and gas are coupled and the dynamics of small grains is affected by the gaseous component. For 49 Cet, the question of coupling remains undecided. We found that the main stellar and disk propertiesof 49 Cet and HD 32297 are very similar to those of previously identified debris disks with high CO content. We present observations of the HD 15115 debris disk from ALMA at 1.3 mm that capture this intriguing system with the highest resolution ($0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}6$ or $29$ AU) at millimeter wavelengths to date. This new ALMA image shows evidence for two rings in the disk separated by a cleared gap. By fitting models directly to the observed visibilities within a MCMC framework, we are able to characterize the millimeter continuum emission and place robust constraints on the disk structure and geometry. In the best-fit model of a power law disk with a Gaussian gap, the disk inner and outer edges are at $43.9\pm5.8$ AU ($0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}89\pm0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}12$) and $92.2\pm2.4$ AU ($1.\!\!^{\prime\prime}88\pm0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}49$), respectively, with a gap located at $58.9\pm4.5$~AU ($1.\!\!^{\prime\prime}2\pm0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}10$) with a fractional depth of $0.88\pm0.10$ and a width of $13.8\pm5.6$ AU ($0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}28\pm0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}11$). Since we do not see any evidence at millimeter wavelengths for the dramatic east-west asymmetry seen in scattered light, we conclude that this feature most likely results from a mechanism that only affects small grains. Using dynamical modeling and our constraints on the gap properties, we are able to estimate a mass for the possible planet sculpting the gap to be $0.16\pm0.06$ $M_\text{Jup}$., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJL on May 15, 2019

Gas has been detected in a number of debris disks. It is likely secondary, i.e. produced by colliding solids. Here, we report ALMA Band 8 observations of neutral carbon in the CO-rich debris disk around the 15--30 Myr old A-type star HD 32297. We find that C$^0$ is located in a ring at $\sim$110 au with a FWHM of $\sim$80 au, and has a mass of $(3.5\pm0.2)\times10^{-3}$ M$_\oplus$. Naively, such a surprisingly small mass can be accumulated from CO photo-dissociation in a time as short as $\sim$10$^4$ yr. We develop a simple model for gas production and destruction in this system, properly accounting for CO self-shielding and shielding by neutral carbon, and introducing a removal mechanism for carbon gas. We find that the most likely scenario to explain both C$^0$ and CO observations, is one where the carbon gas is rapidly removed on a timescale of order a thousand years and the system maintains a very high CO production rate of $\sim$15 M$_\oplus$ Myr$^{-1}$, much higher than the rate of dust grind-down. We propose a possible scenario to meet these peculiar conditions: the capture of carbon onto dust grains, followed by rapid CO re-formation and re-release. In steady state, CO would continuously be recycled, producing a CO-rich gas ring that shows no appreciable spreading over time. The vertical distribution of dust in debris disks is sensitive to the number and size of large planetesimals dynamically stirring the disk, and is therefore well-suited for constraining the prevalence of otherwise unobservable Uranus and Neptune analogs. Information regarding stirring bodies has previously been inferred from infrared and optical observations of debris disk vertical structure, but theoretical works predict that the small particles traced by short-wavelength observations will be `puffed up' by radiation pressure, yielding only upper limits. The large grains that dominate the disk emission at millimeter wavelengths are much less sensitive to the effects of stellar radiation or stellar winds, and therefore trace the underlying mass distribution more directly. Here we present ALMA 1.3 mm dust continuum observations of the debris disk around the nearby M star AU Mic. The 3 au spatial resolution of the observations, combined with the favorable edge-on geometry of the system, allows us to measure the vertical thickness of the disk. We report a scale height-to-radius aspect ratio of $h = 0.031_{-0.004}^{+0.005}$ between radii of $\sim 23$ au and $\sim 41$ au. Comparing this aspect ratio to a theoretical model of size-dependent velocity distributions in the collisional cascade, we find that the perturbing bodies embedded in the local disk must be larger than about 400 km, and the largest perturbing body must be smaller than roughly 1.8 M$_\odot$. These measurements rule out the presence of a gas giant or Neptune analog near the $\sim 40$ au outer edge of the debris ring, but are suggestive of large planetesimals or an Earth-sized planet stirring the dust distribution., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. Modeling the submillimeter to centimeter emission of stars is challenging due to a lack of sensitive observations at these long wavelengths. We launched an ongoing campaign to obtain new observations entitled Measuring the Emission of Stellar Atmospheres at Submillimeter/millimeter wavelengths (MESAS). Here we present ALMA, GBT, and VLA observations of Sirius A, the closest main-sequence A-type star, that span from 1.4 to 9.0 millimeters. These observations complement our previous millimeter data on Sirius A and are entirely consistent with the PHOENIX stellar atmosphere models constructed to explain them. We note that accurate models of long wavelength emission from stars are essential not only to understand fundamental stellar processes, but also to determine the presence of dusty debris in spatially unresolved observations of circumstellar disks., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present ALMA 1.3 mm (230 GHz) observations of the HD 32297 and HD 61005 debris disks, two of the most iconic debris disks due to their dramatic swept-back wings seen in scattered light images. These observations achieve sensitivities of 14 and 13 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ for HD 32297 and HD 61005, respectively, and provide the highest resolution images of these two systems at millimeter wavelengths to date. By adopting a MCMC modeling approach, we determine that both disks are best described by a two-component model consisting of a broad ($\Delta R/R> 0.4$) planetesimal belt with a rising surface density gradient, and a steeply falling outer halo aligned with the scattered light disk. The inner and outer edges of the planetesimal belt are located at $78.5\pm8.1$ AU and $122\pm3$ AU for HD 32297, and $41.9\pm0.9$ AU and $67.0\pm0.5$ AU for HD 61005. The halos extend to $440\pm32$ AU and $188\pm8$ AU, respectively. We also detect $^{12}$CO J$=2-1$ gas emission from HD 32297 co-located with the dust continuum. These new ALMA images provide observational evidence that larger, millimeter-sized grains may also populate the extended halos of these two disks previously thought to only be composed of small, micron-sized grains. We present an analysis of ALMA 1.25 millimeter continuum observations of spiral structures in three protoplanetary disks from the Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project. The disks around Elias 27, IM Lup, and WaOph 6 were observed at a resolution of $\sim40-60$ mas ($\sim6-7$ au). All three disks feature $m=2$ spiral patterns in conjunction with annular substructures. Gas kinematics established by $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ observations indicate that the continuum spiral arms are trailing. The arm-interarm intensity contrasts are modest, typically less than 3. The Elias 27 spiral pattern extends throughout much of the disk, and the arms intersect the gap at $R\sim69$ au. The spiral pattern in the IM Lup disk is particularly complex-it extends about halfway radially through the disk, exhibiting pitch angle variations with radius and interarm features that may be part of ring substructures or spiral arm branches. Spiral arms also extend most of the way through the WaOph 6 disk, but the source overall is much more compact than the other two disks. We discuss possible origins for the spiral structures, including gravitational instability and density waves induced by a stellar or planetary companion. Unlike the millimeter continuum counterparts of many of the disks with spiral arms detected in scattered light, these three sources do not feature high-contrast crescent-like asymmetries or large ($R>20$ au) emission cavities. Debris disk detections around M dwarfs are rare, and so far no gas emission has been detected from an M dwarf debris disk. This makes the 45 Myr old M dwarf WISEJ080822.18-644357.3 a bit of a curiosity; it has a strong infrared excess at an age beyond the lifetime of a typical planet-forming disk, and also exhibits broad H$\alpha$ emission consistent with active accretion from a gaseous disk. To better understand the cold gas and dust properties of this system, we obtained ALMA observations of the 1.3mm continuum and the CO/$^{13}$CO/C$^{18}$O J=2-1 emission lines. No cold CO gas is detected from this system, ruling out a gas-rich protoplanetary disk. Unresolved dust continuum emission is detected at a flux of 198$\pm$15 $\mu$Jy, consistent with 0.057$\pm$0.006 M$_{\oplus}$ worth of optically thin dust, and consistent with being generated through a collisional cascade induced by large bodies at radii $<$16 au. With a sufficiently strong stellar wind, dust grains released in the outer disk can migrate inwards via PR drag, potentially serving as a source of grains for the strong infrared excess., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ

The Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project used ALMA to map the 1.25 millimeter continuum of protoplanetary disks at a spatial resolution of ~5 au. We present a systematic analysis of annular substructures in the 18 single-disk systems targeted in this survey. No dominant architecture emerges from this sample; instead, remarkably diverse morphologies are observed. Annular substructures can occur at virtually any radius where millimeter continuum emission is detected and range in widths from a few au to tens of au. Intensity ratios between gaps and adjacent rings range from near-unity to just a few percent. In a minority of cases, annular substructures co-exist with other types of substructures, including spiral arms (3/18) and crescent-like azimuthal asymmetries (2/18). No clear trend is observed between the positions of the substructures and stellar host properties. In particular, the absence of an obvious association with stellar host luminosity (and hence the disk thermal structure) suggests that substructures do not occur preferentially near major molecular snowlines. Annular substructures like those observed in DSHARP have long been hypothesized to be due to planet-disk interactions. A few disks exhibit characteristics particularly suggestive of this scenario, including substructures in possible mean-motion resonance and "double gap" features reminiscent of hydrodynamical simulations of multiple gaps opened by a planet in a low-viscosity disk., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, captions corrected

We introduce the Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project (DSHARP), one of the initial Large Programs conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary goal of DSHARP is to find and characterize substructures in the spatial distributions of solid particles for a sample of 20 nearby protoplanetary disks, using very high resolution (0.035 arcsec, or 5 au FWHM) observations of their 240 GHz (1.25 mm) continuum emission. These data provide a first homogeneous look at the small-scale features in disks that are directly relevant to the planet formation process, quantifying their prevalence, morphologies, spatial scales, spacings, symmetry, and amplitudes, for targets with a variety of disk and stellar host properties. We find that these substructures are ubiquitous in this sample of large, bright disks. They are most frequently manifested as concentric, narrow emission rings and depleted gaps, although large-scale spiral patterns and small arc-shaped azimuthal asymmetries are also present in some cases. These substructures are found at a wide range of disk radii (from a few au to more than 100 au), are usually compact ($<$10 au), and show a wide range of amplitudes (brightness contrasts). Here we discuss the motivation for the project, describe the survey design and the sample properties, detail the observations and data calibration, highlight some basic results, and provide a general overview of the key conclusions that are presented in more detail in a series of accompanying articles. One of the defining properties of debris discs compared to protoplanetary discs used to be their lack of gas, yet small amounts of gas have been found around an increasing number of debris discs in recent years. These debris discs found to have gas tend to be both young and bright. In this paper we conduct a deep search for CO gas in the system HD 95086 - a 17 Myr old, known planet host that also has a debris disc with a high fractional luminosity of $1.5\times10^{-3}$. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) we search for CO emission lines in bands 3, 6 and 7. By implementing a spectro-spatial filtering technique, we find tentative evidence for CO $J$=2-1 emission in the disc located at a velocity, 8.5$\pm$0.2 km s$^{-1}$, consistent with the radial velocity of the star. The tentative detection suggests that the gas on the East side of the disc is moving towards us. In the same region where continuum emission is detected, we find an integrated line flux of 9.5$\pm$3.6 mJy km s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a CO mass of (1.4-13)$\times10^{-6}$ M$_\oplus$. Our analysis confirms that the level of gas present in the disc is inconsistent with the presence of primordial gas in the system and is consistent with second generation production through the collisional cascade., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Our understanding of stellar atmospheres and our ability to infer architectures of extrasolar planetary systems rely on understanding the emission of stars at submillimeter to centimeter wavelengths. In this chapter we describe how unconstrained stellar emission can interfere with the accurate characterization of circumstellar debris. The ngVLA is the only facility with the sensitivity that allows for the observations of a broad range of stellar spectral types in a feasible amount of time. In the early stages of planet formation, small dust grains grow to become mm sized particles in debris disks around stars. These disks can in principle be characterized by their emission at submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths. Determining both the occurrence and abundance of debris in unresolved circumstellar disks of A-type main-sequence stars requires that the stellar photospheric emission be accurately modeled. To better constrain the photospheric emission for such systems, we present observations of Sirius A, an A-type star with no known debris, from the JCMT, SMA, and VLA at 0.45, 0.85, 0.88, 1.3, 6.7, and 9.0 mm. We use these observations to inform a PHOENIX model of Sirius A's atmosphere. We find the model provides a good match to these data and can be used as a template for the submm/mm emission of other early A-type stars where unresolved debris may be present. We present 870 $\mu$m ALMA observations of polarized dust emission toward the Class II protoplanetary disk IM Lup. We find that the orientation of the polarized emission is along the minor axis of the disk, and that the value of the polarization fraction increases steadily toward the center of the disk, reaching a peak value of ~1.1%. All of these characteristics are consistent with models of self-scattering of submillimeter-wave emission from an optically thin inclined disk. The distribution of the polarization position angles across the disk reveals that while the average orientation is along the minor axis, the polarization orientations show a significant spread in angles; this can also be explained by models of pure scattering. We compare the polarization with that of the Class I/II source HL Tau. A comparison of cuts of the polarization fraction across the major and minor axes of both sources reveals that IM Lup has a substantially higher polarization fraction than HL Tau toward the center of the disk. This enhanced polarization fraction could be due a number of factors, including higher optical depth in HL Tau, or scattering by larger dust grains in the more evolved IM Lup disk. However, models yield similar maximum grain sizes for both HL Tau (72 $\mu$m) and IM Lup (61 $\mu$m, this work). This reveals continued tension between grain-size estimates from scattering models and from models of the dust emission spectrum, which find that the bulk of the (unpolarized) emission in disks is most likely due to millimeter (or even centimeter) sized grains., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Turbulence is a fundamental parameter in models of grain growth during the early stages of planet formation. As such, observational constraints on its magnitude are crucial. Here we self-consistently analyze ALMA CO(2-1), SMA CO(3-2), and SMA CO(6-5) observations of the disk around TW Hya and find an upper limit on the turbulent broadening of $<$0.08c$_s$ ($\alpha<$0.007 for $\alpha$ defined only within 2-3 pressure scale heights above the midplane), lower than the tentative detection previously found from an analysis of the CO(2-1) data. We examine in detail the challenges of image plane fitting vs directly fitting the visibilities, while also considering the role of the vertical temperature gradient, systematic uncertainty in the amplitude calibration, and assumptions about the CO abundance, as potential sources of the discrepancy in the turbulence measurements. These tests result in variations of the turbulence limit between $<$0.04c$_s$ and $<$0.13c$_s$, consistently lower than the 0.2-0.4c$_s$ found previously. Having ruled out numerous factors, we restrict the source of the discrepancy to our assumed coupling between temperature and density through hydrostatic equilibrium in the presence of a vertical temperature gradient and/or the confinement of CO to a thin molecular layer above the midplane, although further work is needed to quantify the influence of these prescriptions. Assumptions about hydrostatic equilibrium and the CO distribution are physically motivated, and may have a small influence on measuring the kinematics of the gas, but they become important when constraining small effects such as the strength of the turbulence within a protoplanetary disk., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present 1.3 millimeter observations of the debris disk surrounding the HR 8799 multi-planet system from the Submillimeter Array to complement archival ALMA observations that spatially filtered away the bulk of the emission. The image morphology at $3.8$ arcsecond (150 AU) resolution indicates an optically thin circumstellar belt, which we associate with a population of dust-producing planetesimals within the debris disk. The interferometric visibilities are fit well by an axisymmetric radial power-law model characterized by a broad width, $\Delta R/R\gtrsim 1$. The belt inclination and orientation parameters are consistent with the planet orbital parameters within the mutual uncertainties. The models constrain the radial location of the inner edge of the belt to $R_\text{in}= 104_{-12}^{+8}$ AU. In a simple scenario where the chaotic zone of the outermost planet b truncates the planetesimal distribution, this inner edge location translates into a constraint on the planet~b mass of $M_\text{pl} = 5.8_{-3.1}^{+7.9}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$. This mass estimate is consistent with infrared observations of the planet luminosity and standard hot-start evolutionary models, with the uncertainties allowing for a range of initial conditions. We also present new 9 millimeter observations of the debris disk from the Very Large Array and determine a millimeter spectral index of $2.41\pm0.17$. This value is typical of debris disks and indicates a power-law index of the grain size distribution $q=3.27\pm0.10$, close to predictions for a classical collisional cascade., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

Debris disks are tenuous, dust-dominated disks commonly observed around stars over a wide range of ages. Those around main sequence stars are analogous to the Solar System's Kuiper Belt and Zodiacal light. The dust in debris disks is believed to be continuously regenerated, originating primarily with collisions of planetesimals. Observations of debris disks provide insight into the evolution of planetary systems; the composition of dust, comets, and planetesimals outside the Solar System; as well as placing constraints on the orbital architecture and potentially the masses of exoplanets that are not otherwise detectable. This review highlights recent advances in multiwavelength, high-resolution scattered light and thermal imaging that have revealed a complex and intricate diversity of structures in debris disks, and discusses how modeling methods are evolving with the breadth and depth of the available observations. Two rapidly advancing subfields highlighted in this review include observations of atomic and molecular gas around main sequence stars, and variations in emission from debris disks on very short (days to years) timescales, providing evidence of non-steady state collisional evolution particularly in young debris disks., Comment: To be published in Annual Reviews of Astronomy and Astrophysics

We analyze high angular resolution ALMA observations of the TW Hya disk to place constraints on the CO and dust properties. We present new, sensitive observations of the $^{12}$CO $J = 3-2$ line at a spatial resolution of 8 AU (0\farcs14). The CO emission exhibits a bright inner core, a shoulder at $r\approx70$ AU, and a prominent break in slope at $r\approx90$ AU. Radiative transfer modeling is used to demonstrate that the emission morphology can be reasonably reproduced with a $^{12}$CO column density profile featuring a steep decrease at $r\approx15$ AU and a secondary bump peaking at $r\approx70$ AU. Similar features have been identified in observations of rarer CO isotopologues, which trace heights closer to the midplane. Substructure in the underlying gas distribution or radially varying CO depletion that affects much of the disk's vertical extent may explain the shared emission features of the main CO isotopologues. We also combine archival 1.3 mm and 870 $\mu$m continuum observations to produce a spectral index map at a spatial resolution of 2 AU. The spectral index rises sharply at the continuum emission gaps at radii of 25, 41, and 47 AU. This behavior suggests that the grains within the gaps are no larger than a few millimeters. We present VRIJHK photometry of the KH 15D T Tauri binary system for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 observing seasons. For the first time in the modern (CCD) era we are seeing Star B fully emerge from behind the trailing edge of the precessing circumbinary ring during each apastron passage. We are, therefore, able to measure its luminosity and color. Decades of photometry on the system now allow us to infer the effective temperature, radius, mass and age of each binary component. We find our values to be in good agreement with previous studies, including archival photographic photometry from the era when both stars were fully visible, and they set the stage for a full model of the system that can be constructed once radial velocity measurements are available. We also present the first high sensitivity radio observations of the system, taken with ALMA and the SMA. The respective 2.0 and 0.88 mm observations provide an upper limit on the circumbinary (gas and dust) disk mass of 1.7 Jupiter masses and reveal an extended CO outflow which overlaps with the position, systemic velocity and orientation of the KH 15D system and is certainly associated with it. The low velocity, tight collimation, and extended nature of the emission suggest that the outflow is inclined nearly orthogonal to the line of sight, implying it is also orthogonal to the circumbinary ring. The position angle of the radio outflow also agrees precisely with the direction of polarization of the optical emission during the faint phase. A small offset between the optical image of the binary and the central line of the CO outflow remains as a puzzle and possible clue to the jet launching mechanism., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

The mechanism behind angular momentum transport in protoplanetary disks, and whether this transport is turbulent in nature, is a fundamental issue in planet formation studies. Recent ALMA observations have suggested that turbulent velocities in the outer regions of these disks are less than ~5-10% of the sound speed, contradicting theoretical predictions of turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI). These observations have generally been interpreted to be consistent with a large-scale laminar magnetic wind driving accretion. Here, we carry out local, shearing box simulations with varying ionization levels and background magnetic field strengths in order to determine which parameters produce results consistent with observations. We find that even when the background magnetic field launches a strong largely laminar wind, significant turbulence persists and is driven by localized regions of vertical magnetic field (the result of zonal flows) that are unstable to the MRI. The only conditions for which we find turbulent velocities below the observational limits are weak background magnetic fields and ionization levels well below that usually assumed in theoretical studies. We interpret these findings within the context of a preliminary model in which a large scale magnetic field, confined to the inner disk, hinders ionizing sources from reaching large radial distances, e.g., through a sufficiently dense wind. Planets and minor bodies such as asteroids, Kuiper-belt objects and comets are integral components of a planetary system. Interactions among them leave clues about the formation process of a planetary system. The signature of such interactions is most prominent through observations of its debris disk at millimeter wavelengths where emission is dominated by the population of large grains that stay close to their parent bodies. Here we present ALMA 1.3 mm observations of HD 95086, a young early-type star that hosts a directly imaged giant planet b and a massive debris disk with both asteroid- and Kuiper-belt analogs. The location of the Kuiper-belt analog is resolved for the first time. The system can be depicted as a broad ($\Delta R/R \sim$0.84), inclined (30\arcdeg$\pm$3\arcdeg) ring with millimeter emission peaked at 200$\pm$6 au from the star. The 1.3 mm disk emission is consistent with a broad disk with sharp boundaries from 106$\pm$6 to 320$\pm$20 au with a surface density distribution described by a power law with an index of --0.5$\pm$0.2. Our deep ALMA map also reveals a bright source located near the edge of the ring, whose brightness at 1.3 mm and potential spectral energy distribution are consistent with it being a luminous star-forming galaxy at high redshift. Gas kinematics are an important part of the planet formation process. Turbulence influences planetesimal growth and migration from the scale of sub-micron dust grains through gas-giant planets. Radio observations of resolved molecular line emission can directly measure this non-thermal motion and, taking advantage of the layered chemical structure of disks, different molecular lines can be combined to map the turbulence throughout the vertical extent of a protoplanetary disk. Here we present ALMA observations of three molecules (DCO$^+$(3-2), C$^{18}$O(2-1) and CO(2-1)) from the disk around HD 163296. We are able to place stringent upper limits ($v_{\rm turb}<$0.06c$_s$, $<$0.05c$_s$ and $<$0.04c$_s$ for CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1) and DCO$^+$(3-2) respectively), corresponding to $\alpha\lesssim$3$\times$10$^{-3}$, similar to our prior limit derived from CO(3-2). This indicates that there is little turbulence throughout the vertical extent of the disk, contrary to theoretical predictions based on the magneto-rotational instability and gravito-turbulence. In modeling the DCO$^+$ emission we also find that it is confined to three concentric rings at 65.7$\pm$0.9 au, 149.9$^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$ au and 259$\pm$1 au, indicative of a complex chemical environment., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present ALMA mosaic observations at 1.3 mm (223 GHz) of the Fomalhaut system with a sensitivity of 14 $\mu$Jy/beam. These observations provide the first millimeter map of the continuum dust emission from the complete outer debris disk with uniform sensitivity, enabling the first conclusive detection of apocenter glow. We adopt a MCMC modeling approach that accounts for the eccentric orbital parameters of a collection of particles within the disk. The outer belt is radially confined with an inner edge of $136.3\pm0.9$ AU and width of $13.5\pm1.8$ AU. We determine a best-fit eccentricity of $0.12\pm0.01$. Assuming a size distribution power law index of $q=3.46\pm 0.09$, we constrain the dust absorptivity power law index $\beta$ to be $0.9<\beta<1.5$. The geometry of the disk is robustly constrained with inclination $65.\!\!^\circ6\pm0.\!\!^\circ3$, position angle $337.\!\!^\circ9\pm0.\!\!^\circ3$, and argument of periastron $22.\!\!^\circ5\pm4.\!\!^\circ3$. Our observations do not confirm any of the azimuthal features found in previous imaging studies of the disk with HST, SCUBA, and ALMA. However, we cannot rule out structures $\leq10$ AU in size or which only affect smaller grains. The central star is clearly detected with a flux density of $0.75\pm0.02$ mJy, significantly lower than predicted by current photospheric models. We present a CO(2-1) and 1240 um continuum survey of 23 debris disks with spectral types B9-G1, observed at an angular resolution of 0.5-1 arcsec with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The sample was selected for large infrared excess and age ~10 Myr, to characterize the prevalence of molecular gas emission in young debris disks. We identify three CO-rich debris disks, plus two additional tentative (3-sigma) CO detections. Twenty disks were detected in the continuum at the >3-sigma level. For the 12 disks in the sample that are spatially resolved by our observations, we perform an independent analysis of the interferometric continuum visibilities to constrain the basic dust disk geometry, as well as a simultaneous analysis of the visibilities and broad-band spectral energy distribution to constrain the characteristic grain size and disk mass. The gas-rich debris disks exhibit preferentially larger outer radii in their dust disks, and a higher prevalence of characteristic grain sizes smaller than the blowout size. The gas-rich disks do not exhibit preferentially larger dust masses, contrary to expectations for a scenario in which a higher cometary destruction rate would be expected to result in a larger mass of both CO and dust. The three debris disks in our sample with strong CO detections are all around A stars: the conditions in disks around intermediate-mass stars appear to be the most conducive to the survival or formation of CO., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present long-baseline Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the 870 micron continuum emission from the nearest gas-rich protoplanetary disk, around TW Hya, that trace millimeter-sized particles down to spatial scales as small as 1 AU (20 mas). These data reveal a series of concentric ring-shaped substructures in the form of bright zones and narrow dark annuli (1-6 AU) with modest contrasts (5-30%). We associate these features with concentrations of solids that have had their inward radial drift slowed or stopped, presumably at local gas pressure maxima. No significant non-axisymmetric structures are detected. Some of the observed features occur near temperatures that may be associated with the condensation fronts of major volatile species, but the relatively small brightness contrasts may also be a consequence of magnetized disk evolution (the so-called zonal flows). Other features, particularly a narrow dark annulus located only 1 AU from the star, could indicate interactions between the disk and young planets. Observations of debris disks offer a window into the physical and dynamical properties of planetesimals in extrasolar systems through the size distribution of dust grains. In particular, the millimeter spectral index of thermal dust emission encodes information on the grain size distribution. We have made new VLA observations of a sample of seven nearby debris disks at 9 mm, with 3" resolution and $\sim5$ $\mu$Jy/beam rms. We combine these with archival ATCA observations of eight additional debris disks observed at 7 mm, together with up-to-date observations of all disks at (sub)millimeter wavelengths from the literature to place tight constraints on the millimeter spectral indices and thus grain size distributions. The analysis gives a weighted mean for the slope of the power law grain size distribution, $n(a)\propto a^{-q}$, of $\langle q \rangle = 3.36\pm0.02$, with a possible trend of decreasing $q$ for later spectral type stars. We compare our results to a range of theoretical models of collisional cascades, from the standard self-similar, steady-state size distribution ($q=3.5$) to solutions that incorporate more realistic physics such as alternative velocity distributions and material strengths, the possibility of a cutoff at small dust sizes from radiation pressure, as well as results from detailed dynamical calculations of specific disks. Such effects can lead to size distributions consistent with the data, and plausibly the observed scatter in spectral indices. For the AU Mic system, the VLA observations show clear evidence of a highly variable stellar emission component; this stellar activity obviates the need to invoke the presence of an asteroid belt to explain the previously reported compact millimeter source in this system., Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures

The disk around HD 141569 is one of a handful of systems whose weak infrared emission is consistent with a debris disk, but still has a significant reservoir of gas. Here we report spatially resolved mm observations of the CO(3-2) and CO(1-0) emission as seen with the SMA and CARMA. We find that the excitation temperature for CO is lower than expected from cospatial blackbody grains, similar to previous observations of analogous systems, and derive a gas mass that lies between that of gas-rich primordial disks and gas-poor debris disks. The data also indicate a large inner hole in the CO gas distribution and an outer radius that lies interior to the outer scattered light rings. This spatial distribution, with the dust rings just outside the gaseous disk, is consistent with the expected interactions between gas and dust in an optically thin disk. This indicates that gas can have a significant effect on the location of the dust within debris disks., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The presence of debris disks around young main sequence stars hints at the existence and structure of planetary systems. Millimeter-wavelength observations probe large grains that trace the location of planetesimal belts. The FEPS (Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems) $Spitzer$ Legacy survey of nearby young solar analogues yielded a sample of five debris disk-hosting stars with millimeter flux suitable for interferometric follow-up. We present observations with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) at ~2" resolution that spatially resolve the debris disks around these nearby ($d\sim$50 pc) stars. Two of the five disks (HD 377, HD 8907) are spatially resolved for the first time and one (HD 104860) is resolved at millimeter wavelengths for the first time. We combine our new observations with archival SMA and Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) data to enable a uniform analysis of the full five-object sample. We simultaneously model the broad-band photometric data and resolved millimeter visibilities to constrain the dust temperatures and disk morphologies, and perform an MCMC analysis to fit for basic structural parameters. We find that the radii and widths of the cold outer belts exhibit properties consistent with scaled-up versions of the Solar System's Kuiper Belt. All the disks exhibit characteristic grain sizes comparable to the blowout size, and all the resolved observations of emission from large dust grains are consistent with an axisymmetric dust distribution to within the uncertainties.
