We contend that ocean turbulent fluxes should be included in the list of Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) created by the Global Ocean Observing System. This list aims to identify variables that are essential to observe to inform policy and maintain a healthy and resilient ocean. Diapycnal turbulent fluxes quantify the rates of exchange of tracers (such as temperature, salinity, density or nutrients, all of which are already EOVs) across a density layer. Measuring them is necessary to close the tracer concentration budgets of these quantities. Measuring turbulent fluxes of buoyancy (Jb), heat (Jq), salinity (JS) or any other tracer requires either synchronous microscale (a few centimeters) measurements of both the vector velocity and the scalar (e.g., temperature) to produce time series of the highly correlated perturbations of the two variables, or microscale measurements of turbulent dissipation rates of kinetic energy (e) and of thermal/salinity/tracer variance (c), from which fluxes can be derived. Unlike isopycnal turbulent fluxes, which are dominated by the mesoscale (tens of kilometers), microscale diapycnal fluxes cannot be derived as the product of existing EOVs, but rather require observations at the appropriate scales. The instrumentation, standardization of measurement practices, and data coordination of turbulence observations have advanced greatly in the past decade and are becoming increasingly robust. With more routine measurements, we can begin to unravel the relationships between physical mixing processes and ecosystem health. In addition to laying out the scientific relevance of the turbulent diapycnal fluxes, this review also compiles the current developments steering the community toward such routine measurements, strengthening the case for registering the turbulent diapycnal fluxes as an pilot Essential Ocean Variable. In an iceberg-choked fjord, meltwater can drive circulation. Down-fjord of the ice, buoyancy and rotation lead to an outflowing surface coastal current hugging one side of the fjord with an inflowing counter-current below. To predict the structure and evolution of these currents, we develop an analytical model – complemented by numerical simulations – that involves a rectangular fjord initially at rest. Specifically, we (i) start with the so-called Rossby adjustment problem; (ii) reconfigure it for a closed channel with stratification; and (iii) generalize the conventional "dam-break" scenario to a gradual-release one that mimics the continual, slow injection of meltwater. Implicit in this description is the result that circulation is mediated by internal Kelvin waves. The analytical model shows that if the total meltwater flux increases (e.g., a larger mélange, warmer water, or enhanced ice–ocean turbulence) then circulation strength increases as would be expected. For realistic parameters, a given meltwater flux induces an exchange flow that is ∼ 50 times larger. This factor decreases with increasing water column stratification and vice versa. Overall, this paper is a step toward making Greenland-wide predictions of fjord inflows and outflows induced by icebergs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new autonomous turbulence profiling float has been designed, built, and tested in field trials off Oregon. Flippin' χSOLO (FχS) employs a SOLO-II buoyancy engine that not only changes but also shifts ballast to move the center of mass to positions on either side of the center of buoyancy, thus causing FχS to flip. FχS is outfitted with a full suite of turbulence sensors—two shear probes, two fast thermistors, and pitot tube, as well as a pressure sensor and three-axis linear accelerometers. FχS descends and ascends with turbulence sensors leading, thereby permitting measurement through the sea surface. The turbulence sensors are housed antipodal from communication antennas so as to eliminate flow disturbance. By flipping at the sea surface, antennas are exposed for communications. The mission of FχS is to provide intensive profiling measurements of the upper ocean from 240 m and through the sea surface, particularly during periods of extreme surface forcing. While surfaced, accelerometers provide estimates of wave height spectra and significant wave height. From 3.5 day field trials, here we evaluate (i) the statistics from two FχS units and our established shipboard profiler, Chameleon, and (ii) FχS-based wave statistics by comparison to a nearby NOAA wave buoy. Significance Statement: The oceanographic fleet of Argo autonomous profilers yields important data that define the state of the ocean's interior. Continued deployments over time define the evolution of the ocean's interior. A significant next step will be to include turbulence measurements on these profilers, leading to estimates of thermodynamic mixing rates that predict future states of the ocean's interior. An autonomous turbulence profiler that employs the buoyancy engine, mission logic, and remote communication of one particular Argo float is described herein. The Flippin' χSOLO is an upper-ocean profiler tasked with rapid and continuous profiling of the upper ocean during weather conditions that preclude shipboard profiling and that includes the upper 10 m that is missed by shipboard turbulence profilers. Autonomous and expendable profiling float arrays such as deployed in the Argo Program require the transmission of reliable data from remote sites. However, existing satellite data transfer rates preclude complete transmission of rapidly sampled turbulence measurements. It is therefore necessary to reduce turbulence data onboard. Here we propose a scheme for onboard data reduction and test it with existing turbulence data obtained with a newly developed version of a SOLO-II profiling float. The scheme invokes simple power law fits to (i) shear probe voltage spectra and (ii) fast thermistor voltage spectra that yield a fit value plus a quality control metric. At roughly 1 m vertical interval resolution, this scheme reduces the necessary data transfer volume 240-fold to approximately 3 kB for every 100 m of a profile (when profiling at 0.2 m s-1). Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ε and thermal variance dissipation rate χ are recovered in post-processing. As a test, we apply our scheme to a dataset comprising 650 profiles and compare its output to that from our standard turbulence processing algorithm. For ε , values from the two approaches agree within a factor of two 87 % of the time; for χ , 78 %. These levels of agreement are greater than or comparable to that between the ε and χ values derived from two shear probes and two fast thermistors, respectively, on the same profiler. The refreezing rate of a borehole drilled through a 252 m thick region of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, is determined using oceanographic measurements over two periods of a day. We first use a method based on the conservation of salt in the supercooled salt water of the borehole. This is compared to a model using a numerical solution of the heat equation to find the temperature distribution in the host ice, allowing ice growth to be calculated from the balance of heat fluxes at the ice/water interface. This second method broadly confirms the refreezing rates deduced from salinity measurements, giving confidence in the generalization of this simple heat-flux model to predict refreezing rates of other boreholes. Predictions from both are subject to uncertainty due to the poorly defined value of the solid fraction of ice that freezes in a supercooled volume of sea water. This is taken to be 0.5 ± 0.1 throughout this study. The predicted rates are also strongly dependent on the initial and boundary conditions chosen, but results show the initial diameter of 600 mm decreases at a rate of ∼3-5 mm h-1 in an ice shelf with a minimum temperature of -22°C.
