We present results from the B-type Binaries Characterisation (BBC) programme, a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of 88 early B-type binary candidates in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). From radial-velocity analysis of 29 observational epochs we confirm the binary status of 64 of our targets, comprising 50 SB1 and 14 SB2 B-type binaries. A further 20 systems (classified as SB1*) show clear signs of periodicity but with more tentative periods. Orbital solutions are presented for these 84 systems, providing the largest homogeneous sample to date of the binary properties of early B-type stars. Our derived orbital-period distribution is generally similar to those for samples of more massive (O-type) binaries in both the LMC and the Galaxy. This similarity with the properties of the more massive O-type binaries is important as early B-type stars are expected to account for the majority of core-collapse supernovae. Differences in the period distributions of the different samples start to increase above 4 d, and are also present between the earliest (B0-0.7) and later-type (B1-2.5) systems within the BBC sample, although further study is required to understand if this is an observational bias or a real physical effect. We have examined the semi-amplitude velocities and orbital periods of our sample to identify potential candidates that could hide compact companions. Comparing with probability distributions of finding black hole companions to OB-type stars from a recent theoretical study, we have found 16 binaries in the higher probability region that warrant further study., 42 pages (main body: 28 pages, supplementary material: 14 pages), 20 figures. Cosmic History has witnessed the lives and deaths of multiple generations of massive stars, all of them invigorating their host galaxies with ionizing photons, kinetic energy, fresh material and stellar-mass black holes. Ubiquitous engines as they are, Astrophysics needs a good understanding of their formation, evolution, properties and yields throughout the history of the Universe, and with decreasing metal content mimicking the environment at the earliest epochs. Ultimately, a physical model that could be extrapolated to zero metallicity would enable tackling long-standing questions such as "What did the First, very massive stars of the Universe look like?" or "What was their role in the re-ionization of the Universe?". Yet, most our knowledge of metal-poor massive stars is drawn from one single point in metallicity. Massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC, $\sim 1/5 Z_{\odot}$) currently serve as templates for low-metallicity objects in the early Universe, even though significant differences with respect to massive stars with poorer metal content have been reported. This White Paper summarizes the current knowledge on extremely (sub-SMC) metal poor massive stars, highlighting the most outstanding open questions and the need to supersede the SMC as standard. A new paradigm can be built from nearby extremely metal-poor galaxies that make a new metallicity ladder, but massive stars in these galaxies are out of reach to current observational facilities. Such task would require an L-size mission, consisting of a 10m-class space telescope operating in the optical and the ultraviolet ranges. Most stars with birth masses larger than that of our Sun belong to binary or higher order multiple systems. Similarly, most stars have stellar winds. Radiation pressure and multiplicity create outflows of material that remove mass from the primary star and inject it into the interstellar medium or transfer it to a companion. Both have strong impact on the subsequent evolution of the stars, yet they are often studied separately. In this short review, I will sketch part of the landscape of the interplay between stellar winds and binarity. I will present several examples where binarity shapes the stellar outflows, providing new opportunities to understand and measure mass loss properties. Stellar winds spectral signatures often help clearly identifying key stages of stellar evolution. The multiplicity properties of these stages then shed a new light onto evolutionary connections between the different categories of evolved stars., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Binary interactions dominate the evolution of massive stars, but their role is less clear for low- and intermediate-mass stars. The evolution of a spherical wind from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star into a nonspherical planetary nebula (PN) could be due to binary interactions. We observed a sample of AGB stars with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and found that their winds exhibit distinct nonspherical geometries with morphological similarities to planetary nebulae (PNe). We infer that the same physics shapes both AGB winds and PNe; additionally, the morphology and AGB mass-loss rate are correlated. These characteristics can be explained by binary interaction. Context: The star cluster R136 inside the LMC hosts a rich population of massive stars, including the most massive stars known. The strong stellar winds of these very luminous stars impact their evolution and the surrounding environment. We currently lack detailed knowledge of the wind structure that is needed to quantify this impact. Aims: To observationally constrain the stellar and wind properties of the massive stars in R136, in particular the parameters related to wind clumping. Methods: We simultaneously analyse optical and UV spectroscopy of 53 O-type and 3 WNh-stars using the FASTWIND model atmosphere code and a genetic algorithm. The models account for optically thick clumps and effects related to porosity and velocity-porosity, as well as a non-void interclump medium. Results: We obtain stellar parameters, surface abundances, mass-loss rates, terminal velocities and clumping characteristics and compare these to theoretical predictions and evolutionary models. The clumping properties include the density of the interclump medium and the velocity-porosity of the wind. For the first time, these characteristics are systematically measured for a wide range of effective temperatures and luminosities. Conclusions: We confirm a cluster age of 1.0-2.5 Myr and derive an initial stellar mass of $\geq 250 {\rm M}_\odot$ for the most massive star in our sample, R136a1. The winds of our sample stars are highly clumped, with an average clumping factor of $f_{\rm cl}=29\pm15$. We find tentative trends in the wind-structure parameters as a function of mass-loss rate, suggesting that the winds of stars with higher mass-loss rates are less clumped. We compare several theoretical predictions to the observed mass-loss rates and terminal velocities and find that none satisfactorily reproduces both quantities. The hunt for compact objects is on. Rarely seen massive binaries with a compact object are a crucial phase in the evolution towards compact object mergers. In Gaia data release 3 (DR3), the first Gaia astrometric orbital solutions for binary sources will become available. We investigate how many black holes (BH) with massive main-sequence dwarf companions (OB+BH binaries) are expected to be detected as binaries in DR3 and at the end of the nominal 5-yr mission (DR4). We estimate the fraction of identifiable OB+BH binaries and discuss the distributions of the masses of both components and the orbital periods. We study the impact of different BH-formation scenarios. Using tailored models for the massive star population, which assume a direct collapse and no kick upon BH formation (the fiducial case), we estimate the fraction of OB+BH systems that Gaia will detect as binaries. A distance distribution according to that of the second Alma Luminous Star catalogue (ALSII) is assumed. We investigate how many of the systems detected as binaries are identifiable as OB+BH binaries, using a method based on astrometric data. In the fiducial case we conservatively estimate that 77% of the OB+BH binaries in ALSII will be detected as binaries in DR3, of which 89% are identifiable as OB+BH binaries. This leads to a total of around 190 OB+BH binaries, a 20-fold increase in the known sample of OB+BH binaries, covering an uncharted parameter space of long-period binaries. The size and properties of the identifiable OB+BH population will contain crucial observational constraints to improve our understanding of BH formation. In DR4, the detected fraction will increase to 85%, of which 82% will be identifiable. Hence, an additional ~5 systems could be identified, which are expected to have either very short or long periods. The fractions become smaller for different BH-formation scenarios. Context. It is well known that massive O stars are frequently (if not always) found in binary or higher-order multiple systems, but this fact has been less robustly investigated for the lower mass range of the massive stars, represented by B-type stars. Obtaining the binary fraction and orbital parameter distributions of B-type stars is crucial to understand the impact of multiplicity on the archetypal progenitor of core-collapse supernovae as well as to properly investigate formation channels for gravitational wave progenitors. Aims. This work aims to characterise the multiplicity of the B star population of the young open cluster NGC 6231 through multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of 80 B-type stars. Methods. We analyse 31 FLAMES/GIRAFFE observations of 80 B-type stars, monitoring their radial velocities (RVs) and performing a least-squares spectral analysis (Lomb-Scargle) to search for periodicity in those stars with statistically significant variability in their RVs. Results. We constrained an observed spectroscopic binary fraction of 33 ± 5% for the B-type stars of NGC 6231, with a first order bias correction giving a true spectroscopic binary fraction of 52 ± 8%. Out of 27 B-type binary candidates, we obtained orbital solutions for 20 systems: 15 single-lined (SB1) and five double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s). We present these orbital solutions and the orbital parameter distributions associated with them. Conclusions. Our results indicate that Galactic B-type stars are less frequently found in binary systems than their more massive O-type counterparts, but their orbital properties generally resemble those of B- and O-type stars in both the Galaxy and Large Magellanic Cloud.

The future ESA space mission PLATO aims to detect thousands of exoplanets, including Earth-like planets, and constrain their radius and mean density. To achieve this goal, the space based photometric observations are not enough but need to be complemented by ground-based observations to measure the Radial Velocity (RV) of the exoplanet host stars. MARVEL is such a facility consisting of four 80 cm telescope linked through optical fibers to a single high-resolution echelle spectrograph, designed for high-precision RV measurements with a uncertainty of 1 ms -1. MARVEL is build by a consortium led by the KU Leuven with contributions from the UK, Austria, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, and Spain, and will be commissioned in 2023. To reach such high RV precision, not only ultra-stable hardware is currently being developed, but also a state-of-The-Art data processing pipeline for which we present the first results in this poster.

Context. Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are thought to be in a transitory phase between O stars on the main-sequence and the Wolf-Rayet stage. Recent studies suggest that they might be formed through binary interaction. Only a few are known in binary systems but their multiplicity fraction is uncertain. Aims. This study aims at deriving the binary fraction among the Galactic (confirmed and candidate) LBV population. We combine multi-epoch spectroscopy and long-baseline interferometry. Methods. We use cross-correlation to measure their radial velocities. We identify spectroscopic binaries through significant RV variability (larger than 35 km/s). We investigate the observational biases to establish the intrinsic binary fraction. We use CANDID to detect interferometric companions, derive their parameters and positions. Results. We derive an observed spectroscopic binary fraction of 26 %. Considering period and mass ratio ranges from Porb=1 to 1000 days, and q = 0.1-1.0, and a representative set of orbital parameter distributions, we find a bias-corrected binary fraction of 62%. From interferometry, we detect 14 companions out of 18 objects, providing a binary fraction of 78% at projected separations between 1 and 120 mas. From the derived primary diameters, and the distances of these objects, we measure for the first time the exact radii of Galactic LBVs to be between 100 and 650 Rsun, making unlikely to have short-period systems. Conclusions. This analysis shows that the binary fraction among the Galactic LBV population is large. If they form through single-star evolution, their orbit must be initially large. If they form through binary channel that implies that either massive stars in short binary systems must undergo a phase of fully non-conservative mass transfer to be able to sufficiently widen the orbit or that LBVs form through merging in initially binary or triple systems., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in A&A. Recent high-quality Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry shows that the main sequences (MS) stars of young star clusters form two discrete components in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). Based on their distribution in the CMD, we show that stars of the blue MS component can be understood as slow rotators originating from stellar mergers. We derive the masses of the blue MS stars, and find that they follow a nearly flat mass function, which supports their unusual formation path. Our results imply that the cluster stars gain their mass in two different ways, by disk accretion leading to rapid rotation, contributing to the red MS, or by binary merger leading to slow rotation and populating the blue MS. We also derive the approximate merger time of the individual stars of the blue MS component, and find a strong early peak in the merger rate, with a lower level merger activity prevailing for tens of Myr. This supports recent binary formation models, and explains new velocity dispersion measurements for members of young star clusters. Organized by KU Leuven and Ghent University, two leading Belgian universities, the Master of Space Studies is an interdisciplinary post-master program that aims to equip students with the skills they need to initiate a career in the space sector. Beyond the deepening of their initial expertise, the program exposes the participating students to a broad range of topics, from human science (space law and policy, international organizations, project management, ...), to technical science (space missions, spacecraft and payload engineering, satellite telecommunications, ...), and exact sciences (Earth and Space observations, medical sciences, human explorations, ...) with the aim to provide the students with a broad overview of the interdisciplinary expertise required by many space projects. Initiated in the late 2000s, the program has served as a gateway into the space sector for over 100 students since its creation. After a brief introduction to the program, we present a programmatic analysis, based on quantitative and qualitative surveys of students and alumni. We present the demographic, career tracks and current professional situations of students in the last 10 years, allowing us to identify trends that affects tertiary education to space sector. We conclude by briefly highlighting other ongoing space education activities, from the Belgian antenna of ESERO to the involvement of students in CubeSpec, a 6U CubeSat platform selected as ESA in-flight demonstrator to enable low-cost versatile spectroscopy of astronomical targets

Stellar-mass black holes are the final remnants of stars born with more than 15 solar masses. Billions are expected to reside in the Local Group, yet only a few are known, mostly detected through X-rays emitted as they accrete material from a companion star. Here, we report on VFTS 243: a massive X-ray-faint binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. With an orbital period of 10.4 d, it comprises an O-type star of 25 solar masses and an unseen companion of at least nine solar masses. Our spectral analysis excludes a non-degenerate companion at a 5σ confidence level. The minimum companion mass implies that it is a black hole. No other X-ray-quiet black hole is unambiguously known outside our Galaxy. The (near-)circular orbit and kinematics of VFTS 243 imply that the collapse of the progenitor into a black hole was associated with little or no ejected material or black-hole kick. In the realm of massive stars, strong binary interaction is commonplace. One extreme case are overcontact systems, which is expected to be part of the evolution of all stars evolving towards a merger, and is hypothesized to play a role in the formation of binary black holes. However, important simplifications are made to model the evolution of overcontact binaries, namely that tidal or rotational deformation is frequently ignored. Yet, both observation and theory show that overcontact stars are heavily tidally deformed, leaving a potentially important effect on the outer layers unaccounted for in models. In this work we develop the methodology to represented tidally deformed stars. Using numerical methods, we compute the structure correction factors to the 1D spherical stellar structure equations due to the binary Roche potential, and compare them to existing results and the structure corrections of single rotating stars. We implement the new structure correction factors into the stellar evolution code MESA and explore several case studies. We compare the differences between our simulations when no rotation is included, when we treat rotation using single star corrections (i.e. only accounting for centrifugal deformation) or when we use tidal deformation. We find that ignoring rotation in deformed detached eclipsing binaries can produce a radius discrepancy of up to 5%. The difference between tidal and single star centrifugal distortion models is more benign at 1%, showing that single rotating star models are a suitable approximation of tidally deformed stars in a binary system. In overcontact configurations, we find a similar 5% variation in surface properties as a result of tidal distortion with respect to non-rotating models, showing that it is inappropriate to model binary stars that fill their Roche lobe significantly, as non-rotating., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Most massive stars belong to multiple systems, yet the formation process leading to such high multiplicity remains insufficiently understood. To help constrain the different formation scenarios that exist, insights on the low-mass end of the companion mass function of such stars is crucial. However, this is a challenging endeavour as (sub-)solar mass companions at angular separations ($\rho$) below 1" (corresponding to 1000-3000 au in nearby young open clusters and OB associations) are difficult to detect due to the large brightness contrast with the central star. With the Carina High-contrast Imaging Project of massive Stars (CHIPS), we aim to obtain statistically significant constraints on the presence and properties of low-mass companions around massive stars at a previously unreachable observing window ($\Delta \mathrm{mag} \gtrsim 10$ at $\rho \lesssim$ 1"). In this second paper in the series, we focus on the Trumpler 14 cluster, which harbours some of the youngest and most massive O-type stars in the Milky Way. We obtained VLT-SPHERE observations of seven O-type objects in Trumpler 14 using the IRDIFS_EXT mode. These allow us to search for companions at separations larger than 0."15 (approx. 360 au) and down to magnitude contrast $>10 \mathrm{mag}$ in the near-infrared. We used angular and spectral differential imaging along with PSF fitting to detect sources and measure their flux relative to that of the central object. We detected 211 sources with near-infrared magnitude contrast in the range of 2 to 12. The closest companion, at only 0."26, is characterised as a 1.4M$_{\odot}$ stars with an age of 0.6Myr, in excellent agreement with previous age estimates for Tr 14. The mass function peaks at about 0.4M$_{\odot}$ and presents a dearth of stars in the 0.5 to 0.8M$_{\odot}$ mass range compared to previous estimates of the initial mass function in Tr 14., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. We investigate the impact of optically thick clumping on stellar wind diagnostics in O supergiants and constrain wind parameters associated with porosity in velocity space. This is the first time the effects of optically thick clumping have been investigated for a sample of massive hot stars, using models including a full optically thick clumping description. We re-analyse spectroscopic observations of a sample of eight O supergiants. Using a genetic algorithm wrapper around the NLTE atmosphere code FASTWIND we obtain simultaneous fits to optical and UV spectra and determine photospheric and wind properties and surface abundances. We provide empirical constraints on a number of wind parameters including the clumping factors, mass-loss rates and terminal wind velocities. Additionally, we establish the first systematic empirical constraints on velocity filling factors and interclump densities. These parameters describe clump distribution in velocity-space and density of the interclump medium in physical-space, respectively. We observe a mass-loss rate reduction of a factor of 3.6 compared to theoretical predictions from Vink et al. (2000), and mass-loss rates within a factor 1.4 of predictions from Bj\"orklund et al. (2021). We confirm that including optically thick clumping allows simultaneous fitting of recombination lines and resonance lines, including the unsaturated UV phosphorus lines (Pv 1118-1128), without reducing the phosphorus abundance. We find that, on average, half of the wind velocity field is covered by dense clumps. We also find that these clumps are 25 times denser than the average wind, and that the interclump medium is 3-10 times less dense than the mean wind. The former result agrees well with theoretical predictions, the latter suggests that lateral filling-in of radially compressed gas might be critical for setting the scale of the rarefied interclump matter., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 35 pages, 20 figures

The majority of close massive binary stars with initial periods of a few days experience a contact phase, in which both stars overflow their Roche lobes simultaneously. We perform the first dedicated study of the evolution of massive contact binaries and provide a comprehensive prediction of their observed properties. We compute 2790 detailed binary models for the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds each, assuming a conservative mass transfer. The initial parameter space for both grids span total masses from 20 to 80$\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$, orbital periods of 0.6 to 2 days and mass ratios of 0.6 to 1.0. We find that models that remain in contact over nuclear timescales evolve towards equal masses, echoing the mass ratios of their observed counterparts. Ultimately, the fate of our nuclear-timescale models is to merge on the main sequence. Our predicted period-mass ratio distributions of O-type contact binaries are similar for both galaxies, and we expect 10 such systems together in both Magellanic Clouds. While we can largely reproduce the observed distribution, we over-estimate the population of equal-mass contact binaries. This situation is somewhat remedied if we also account for binaries that are approaching contact. Observations of massive stars in young open clusters (< ~8 Myr) have shown that a majority of them are in binary systems, most of which will interact during their life. Populations of massive stars older than ~20 Myr allow us to probe the outcome of such interactions after many systems have experienced mass and angular momentum transfer. Using multi-epoch integral-field spectroscopy, we investigate the multiplicity properties of the massive-star population in NGC 330 (~40 Myr) in the Small Magellanic Cloud to search for imprints of stellar evolution on the multiplicity properties. From six epochs of VLT/MUSE observations supported by adaptive optics we extract spectra and measure radial velocities for stars brighter than F814W = 19. We identify single-lined spectroscopic binaries through significant RV variability as well as double-lined spectroscopic binaries, and quantify the observational biases for binary detection. The observed spectroscopic binary fraction is 13.2+/-2.0 %. Considering period and mass ratio ranges from log(P)=0.15-3.5, and q = 0.1-1.0, and a representative set of orbital parameter distributions, we find a bias-corrected close binary fraction of 34 +8 -7 %. This seems to decline for the fainter stars, which indicates either that the close binary fraction drops in the B-type domain, or that the period distribution becomes more heavily weighted towards longer orbital periods. Both fractions vary strongly in different regions of the color-magnitude diagram which probably reveals the imprint of the binary history of different groups of stars. We provide the first homogeneous RV study of a large sample of B-type stars at a low metallicity. The overall bias-corrected close binary fraction of B stars in NGC 330 is lower than the one reported for younger Galactic and LMC clusters. O-stars are known to experience a wide range of variability mechanisms originating at both their surface and their near-core regions. Characterization and understanding of this variability and its potential causes are integral for evolutionary calculations. We use a new extensive high-resolution spectroscopic data set to characterize the variability observed in both the spectroscopic and space-based photometric observations of the O+B eclipsing binary HD~165246. We present an updated atmospheric and binary solution for the primary component, involving a high level of microturbulence ($13_{-1.3}^{+1.0}\,$km\,s$^{-1}$) and a mass of $M_1=23.7_{-1.4}^{+1.1}$~M$_{\odot}$, placing it in a sparsely explored region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Furthermore, we deduce a rotational frequency of $0.690\pm 0.003\,$d$^{-1}$ from the combined photometric and line-profile variability, implying that the primary rotates at 40\% of its critical Keplerian rotation rate. Vigorous mass loss in the classical Wolf-Rayet (WR) phase is important for the late evolution and final fate of massive stars. We develop spherically symmetric time-dependent and steady-state hydrodynamical models of the radiation-driven wind outflows and associated mass loss from classical WR stars. The simulations are based on combining the opacities typically used in static stellar structure and evolution models with a simple parametrised form for the enhanced line-opacity expected within a supersonic outflow. Our simulations reveal high mass-loss rates initiated in deep and hot optically thick layers around T\approx 200kK. The resulting velocity structure is non-monotonic and can be separated into three phases: i) an initial acceleration to supersonic speeds ii) stagnation and even deceleration, and iii) an outer region of rapid re-acceleration. The characteristic structures seen in converged steady-state simulations agree well with the outflow properties of our time-dependent models. By directly comparing our dynamic simulations to corresponding hydrostatic models, we demonstrate explicitly that the need to invoke extra energy transport in convectively inefficient regions of stellar structure and evolution models is merely an artefact of enforcing a hydrostatic outer boundary. Moreover, the "dynamically inflated" inner regions of our simulations provide a natural explanation for the often-found mismatch between predicted hydrostatic WR radii and those inferred from spectroscopy. Finally, we contrast our simulations with alternative recent WR wind models based on co-moving frame radiative transfer for computing the radiation force. Since CMF transfer currently cannot handle non-monotonic velocity fields, the characteristic deceleration regions found here are avoided in such simulations by invoking an ad-hoc very high degree of clumping., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The processes by which red supergiants lose mass are not fully understood thus-far and their mass-loss rates lack theoretical constraints. The ambient surroundings of the nearby M0.5 Iab star Antares offers an ideal environment to obtain detailed empirical information on the outflow properties at its onset, and hence indirectly, on the mode(s) of mass loss. We present and analyse optical VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL polarimetric imaging with angular resolution down to 23 milli-arcsec, sufficient to spatially resolve both the stellar disk and its direct surroundings. We detect a conspicuous feature in polarised intensity that we identify as a clump containing dust, which we characterise through 3D radiative transfer modelling. The clump is positioned behind the plane of the sky, therefore has been released from the backside of the star, and its inner edge is only 0.3 stellar radii above the surface. The current dust mass in the clump is $1.3^{+0.2}_{-1.0} \times 10^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$, though its proximity to the star implies that dust nucleation is probably still ongoing. The ejection of clumps of gas and dust makes a non-negligible contribution to the total mass lost from the star which could possibly be linked to localised surface activity such as convective motions or non-radial pulsations., Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present updated orbital elements for the Wolf-Rayet (WR) binary WR\,140 (HD\,193793; WC7pd + O5.5fc). The new orbital elements were derived using previously published measurements along with {\color{black}160} new radial velocity measurements across the 2016 periastron passage of WR 140. Additionally, four new measurements of the orbital astrometry were collected with the CHARA Array. With these measurements, we derive stellar masses of $M_{\rm WR} = 10.31\pm0.45 M_\odot$ and $M_{\rm O} = 29.27\pm1.14 M_{\odot}$. We also include a discussion of the evolutionary history of this system from the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) model grid to show that this WR star likely formed primarily through mass loss in the stellar winds, with only a moderate amount of mass lost or transferred through binary interactions., 10 pages, 5 figures

The majority of massive stars ($>8$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$) in OB associations are found in close binary systems. Nonetheless, the formation mechanism of these close massive binaries is not understood yet. Using literature data, we measured the radial-velocity dispersion ($\sigma_\mathrm{RV}$) as a proxy for the close binary fraction in ten OB associations in the Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud, spanning an age range from 1 to 6 Myrs. We find a positive trend of this dispersion with the cluster's age, which is consistent with binary hardening. Assuming a universal binary fraction of $f_\mathrm{bin}$ = 0.7, we converted the $\sigma_\mathrm{RV}$ behavior to an evolution of the minimum orbital period $P_\mathrm{cutoff}$ from $\sim$9.5 years at 1 Myr to $\sim$1.4 days for the oldest clusters in our sample at $\sim$6 Myr. Our results suggest that binaries are formed at larger separations, and they harden in around 1 to 2 Myrs to produce the period distribution observed in few million year-old OB binaries. Such an inward migration may either be driven by an interaction with a remnant accretion disk or with other young stellar objects present in the system. Context. To quantitatively decode the information stored within an observed spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state and accurate radiative transfer solution schemes are required. The accuracy of the model is then typically evaluated by comparing the calculated and observed spectra. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for binary companions and 3D structures in the stellar envelopes. The enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1 constitutes a perfect example of such a complex multi-D problem. Thus far, the LB-1 system has been indirectly investigated by 1D stellar-atmosphere codes and by spectral disentangling techniques, yielding differing conclusions about the nature of the system (e.g., a B-star and black-hole binary with an accretion disc around the black hole or a stripped-star and Be-star binary system have been proposed). Aims. To improve our understanding of the LB-1 system, we directly modelled the phase-dependent Hα line profiles of this system. To this end, we developed and present a multi-purpose binary-object spectral-synthesis code in 3D (BOSS-3D). Methods. BOSS-3D calculates synthetic line profiles for a given state of the circumstellar material. The standard pz-geometry commonly used for single stars is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each involved object and by accounting for the appropriate coordinate transformations. The code is then applied to the LB-1 system, considering two main hypotheses, a binary containing a stripped star and Be star, or a B star and a black hole with a disc. Results. Comparing these two scenarios, neither model can reproduce the detailed phase-dependent shape of the Hα line profiles. A satisfactory match with the observations, however, is obtained by invoking a disc around the primary object in addition to the Be-star disc or the black-hole accretion disc. Conclusions. The developed code can be used to model synthetic line profiles for a wide variety of binary systems, ranging from transit spectra of planetary atmospheres, to post-asymptotic giant branch binaries including circumstellar and circumbinary discs and massive-star binaries with stellar winds and disc systems. For the LB-1 system, our modelling provides strong evidence that each object in the system contains a disc-like structure.

As potential progenitors of several exotic phenomena including gravitational wave sources, magnetic stars, and Be stars, close massive binary systems probe a crucial area of the parameter space in massive star evolution. Despite the importance of these systems, large uncertainties regarding the nature and efficiency of the internal mixing mechanisms still exist. In this work, we aim to provide robust observational constraints on the internal mixing processes by spectroscopically analyzing a sample of three massive overcontact binaries at different metallicities. Using optical phase-resolved spectroscopic data, we perform an atmosphere analysis using more traditional 1D techniques and using state-of-the-art 3D techniques. We compare and contrast the assumptions and results of each technique and investigate how the assumptions affect the final derived atmospheric parameters. We find that in all three cases, both components of system are highly overluminous indicating either efficient internal mixing of helium or previous non-conservative mass transfer. However, we do not find strong evidence of helium or CNO surface abundance changes usually associated with mixing. Additionally, we find that in unequal mass systems, the measured effective temperature and luminosity of the less massive component places it very close to the more massive component on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. These results were obtained independently using both of the techniques mentioned above, which suggests that these measurements are robust. The observed discrepancies between the temperature and the surface abundance measurements when compared to theoretical expectations indicate that unaccounted for additional physical mechanisms may be at play., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 28 pages, 20 figures

CUBESPEC is an ESA in-orbit demonstration 6U CubeSat mission, currently in phase A/B. CUBESPEC will deliver months long series of high-resolution spectroscopy to study the structure of massive stars. The payload consists of a Cassegrain telescope with a rectangular primary mirror of 9 x 19 cm2 and a compact high-resolution echelle spectrograph. We aim at a 2023 launch demonstrating the CUBESPEC concept: providing the astronomical community with a generic solution for affordable space-based spectroscopy. The spectrograph design can be configured with minimal hardware changes for low spectral resolution (R = 50) up to high resolution (R ~ 50000) over a over wavelength ranges between 200–1000nm. CUBESPEC will use the KU Leuven ADCS for coarse pointing of the spacecraft, supplemented with a fine-guidance system using a fast steering mirror to center the source on the spectrograph slit. We present the CUBESPEC design and mission analysis, and give an update of the project status.

Since the first discovery of a planet outside of our Solar System in 1995, exoplanet research has shifted from detecting to characterizing worlds around other stars. The TESS (NASA, launched 2019) and PLATO mission (ESA, planned launch 2026) will find and constrain the size of thousands of exoplanets around bright stars all over the sky. Radial velocity measurements are needed to characterize the orbit and mass, and complete the picture of densities and composition of the exoplanet systems found. The Ariel mission (ESA, planned launch 2028) will characterize exoplanet atmospheres with infrared spectroscopy. Characterization of stellar activity using optical spectroscopy from the ground is key to retrieve the spectral footprint of the planetary atmosphere in Ariel's spectra. To enable the scientific harvest of the TESS, PLATO and Ariel space missions, we plan to install MARVEL as an extension of the existing Mercator Telescope at the Roque De Los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma (SPAIN). MARVEL consists of an array of four 80 cm telescopes linked through optical fibers to a single high-resolution echelle spectrograph, optimized for extreme-precision radial velocity measurements. It can observe the radial velocities of four different stars simultaneously or, alternatively, combine the flux from four telescopes pointing to a single faint target in one spectrum. MARVEL is constructed by a KU Leuven (Belgium) led collaboration, with contributions from the UK, Austria, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Spain. The space missions TESS and PLATO plan to double the number of 4000 exoplanets already discovered and will measure the size of thousands of exoplanets around the brightest stars in the sky, allowing ground-based radial velocity spectroscopy follow-up to determine the orbit and mass of the detected planets. The new facility we are developing, MARVEL (Raskin et al. this conference1 ), will enable the ground-based follow-up of large numbers of exoplanet detections expected from TESS and PLATO, which cannot be carried out only by the current facilities that achieve the necessary radial velocity accuracy of 1 ms-1 or less. This paper presents the MARVEL observation strategy and performance analysis based on predicted PLATO transit detection yield simulations. The resulting observation scenario baseline will help in the instrument design choices and demonstrate the effectiveness of MARVEL as a TESS and PLATO science enabling facility.

BAT99 126 is a multiple system in the Large Magellanic Cloud containing a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star, which has a reported spectroscopic (orbital) period of 25.5 days and a photometric (orbital) period of 1.55 days, and hence is potentially one of the shortest WR binaries known to date. Such short-period binary systems containing a WR star in low-metallicity environments are prime candidate progenitors of black-hole (BH) mergers. By thoroughly analysing the spectroscopic and photometric data, we aim to establish the true multiplicity of BAT99 126, characterise the orbit(s) of the system, measure the physical properties of its individual components, and determine the overall evolutionary status of the system. Using newly acquired high resolution spectra, we measured radial velocities and performed a spectral analysis of the individual components. We estimated the age of the system and derived an evolutionary scenario for the 1.55-day system. BAT99 126 comprises at least four components. The 1.55-day photometric signal originates in an eclipsing O+O binary of spectral types O4 V and O6.5 V, and masses of 36+/-5 MSun and 15+/-2 MSun, respectively. For the WR star, we derived a spectral type WN2.5-3 and reject the previously reported 25.5-d period. We find evidence in the composite spectra of a fourth component, a B1 V star, which shows radial velocity variation. The configurations of the B-type star, WR star, and possible additional undetected components remain unknown. We estimated the age of the system to be 4.2 Myr. The O+O binary likely went through a phase of conservative mass transfer and is currently a near-contact system. We show that BAT99 126 is a multiple - quadruple or higher-order - system with a total initial mass > 160 MSun. Massive stars like company. However, low-mass companions have remained extremely difficult to detect at angular separations ($\rho$) smaller than 1" (~1000-3000 au considering typical distance to nearby massive stars) given the large brightness contrast between the companion and the central star. Constraints on the low-mass end of the companions mass-function for massive stars are however needed, for example to help distinguishing between various scenarios for the formation of massive stars. To obtain statistically significant constraint on the presence of low-mass companions beyond the typical detection limit of current surveys ($\Delta \mathrm{mag} \lesssim 5$ at $\rho \lesssim 1$"), we initiated a survey of O and Wolf-Rayet stars in the Carina region using the SPHERE coronagraphic instrument on the VLT. In this first paper, we aim to introduce the survey, to present the methodology and to demonstrate the capability of SPHERE for massive stars using the multiple system QZ~Car. High-contrast imaging techniques, such as angular- and spectral-differential imaging techniques as well as PSF-fitting, were applied to detect and measure the relative flux of companions in each spectral channel of the instrument. We detected 19 sources around the QZ~Car system with detection limits of 9~mag at $\rho > 200$~mas for IFS and as faint as 13~mag at $\rho$ > 1".8 for IRDIS (corresponding to sub-solar masses for potential companions). All but two are reported here for the first time. Based on this proof of concept, we showed that VLT/SPHERE allows us to reach the sub-solar mass regime of the companion mass function. This paves the way for this type of observation with a large sample of massive stars to provide novel constraints on the multiplicity of massive stars in a region of the parameter space that has remained inaccessible so far., Comment: Submitted and accepted by A&A. 17 pages, 10 figures

We conducted an observational campaign towards one of the most massive and luminous colliding wind binaries in the Galaxy, HD~93129A, close to its periastron passage in 2018. During this time the source was predicted to be in its maximum of high-energy emission. Here we present our data analysis from the X-ray satellites \textit{Chandra} and \textit{NuSTAR} and the $\gamma$-ray satellite \textit{AGILE}. High-energy emission coincident with HD~93129A was detected in the X-ray band up to $\sim$18~keV, whereas in the $\gamma$-ray band only upper limits were obtained. We interpret the derived fluxes using a non-thermal radiative model for the wind-collision region. We establish a conservative upper limit for the fraction of the wind kinetic power that is converted into relativistic electron acceleration, $f_\mathrm{NT,e} < 0.02$. In addition, we set a lower limit for the magnetic field in the wind-collision region as $B_\mathrm{WCR} > 0.3$~G. We also argue a putative interpretation of the emission from which we estimate $f_\mathrm{NT,e} \approx 0.006$ and $B_\mathrm{WCR} \approx 0.5$~G. We conclude that multi-wavelength, dedicated observing campaigns during carefully selected epochs are a powerful tool for characterising the relativistic particle content and magnetic field intensity in colliding wind binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Massive stars play an important role in the mechanical and chemical evolution of galaxies. Understanding the internal processes of these stars is vital to our understanding of their evolution and eventual end products. Deformations from spherical geometry are common for massive stars; however, the tools that are currently available for the study of these systems are almost exclusively one-dimensional. We present a new spectroscopic analysis tool tailored for massive stars that deviate from spherical symmetry. This code (entitled SPAMMS) is a spectroscopic patch model that takes the three-dimensional surface geometry of the system into account to produce spectral profiles at given phases and orientations. In using the Wilson-Devinney-like code PHOEBE in combination with the non local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiative transfer code FASTWIND, we created a three-dimensional mesh that represents the surface geometry of our system and we assigned FASTWIND emergent intensity line profiles to each mesh triangle, which take the local parameters such as temperature, surface gravity, and radius into account. These line profiles were then integrated across the visible surface, where their flux contribution and radial velocity are taken into account, thus returning a final line profile for the visible surface of the system at a given phase. We demonstrate that SPAMMS can accurately reproduce the morphology of observed spectral line profiles for overcontact systems. Additionally, we show how line profiles of rapidly-rotating single stars differ when taking rotational distortion into account, and the effects that these can have on the determined parameters. Classical Wolf-Rayet stars are evolved, hydrogen depleted massive stars that exhibit strong mass-loss. In theory, these stars can form either by intrinsic mass loss (stellar winds or eruptions), or via mass-removal in binaries. The Wolf-Rayet stars in the Magellanic Clouds are often thought to have originated through binary interaction due to the low ambient metallicity and, correspondingly, reduced wind mass-loss. We performed a complete spectral analysis of all known WR binaries of the nitrogen sequence in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, as well as additional orbital analyses, and constrained the evolutionary histories of these stars. We find that the bulk of Wolf-Rayet stars are luminous enough to be explained by single-star evolution. In contrast to prediction, we do not find clear evidence for a large population of low-luminosity Wolf-Rayet stars that could only form via binary interaction, suggesting a discrepancy between predictions and observations.

Context. There is currently a niche for providing high-cadence, high resolution, time-series optical spectroscopy from space, which can be filled by using a low-cost cubesat mission. The Belgian-led ESA CubeSpec mission is specifically designed to provide space-based, low-cost spectroscopy with specific capabilities that can be optimised for a particular science need. Approved as an ESA in-orbit demonstrator, the CubeSpec satellite's primary science objective will focus on obtaining high-cadence, high resolution optical spectroscopic data to facilitate asteroseismology of pulsating massive stars. Aims. In this first paper, we aim to search for pulsating massive stars suitable for the CubeSpec mission, specifically $\beta$ Cep stars, which typically require time series spectroscopy to identify the geometry of their pulsation modes. Methods. Based on the science requirements needed to enable asteroseismology of massive stars with the capabilities of CubeSpec's spectrograph, we combine a literature study for pulsation with the analysis of recent high-cadence time series TESS photometry to classify the variability for stars brighter than V < 4 mag and between O9 and B3 in spectral type. Results. Among the 90 stars that meet our magnitude and spectral type requirements, we identify 23 promising $\beta$ Cep stars with high-amplitude (non-)radial pulsation modes with frequencies below 7 d$^{-1}$. Using further constraints on projected rotational velocities, pulsation amplitudes and number of pulsation modes, we devise a prioritised target list for the CubeSpec mission according to its science requirements and the potential of the targets for asteroseismology. The multiplicity properties of massive stars are one of the important outstanding issues in stellar evolution. Quantifying the binary statistics of all evolutionary phases is essential to paint a complete picture of how and when massive stars interact with their companions, and to determine the consequences of these interactions. We investigate the multiplicity of an almost complete census of red supergiant stars (RSGs) in NGC 330, a young massive cluster in the SMC. Using a combination of multi-epoch HARPS and MUSE spectroscopy, we estimate radial velocities and assess the kinematic and multiplicity properties of 15 RSGs in NGC 330. Radial velocities are estimated to better than +/-100 m/s for the HARPS data. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion for the cluster is estimated as 3.20 +0.69-0.52 km/s. When virial equilibrium is assumed, the dynamical mass of the cluster is log (M{dyn} /M{sun}) = 5.20+/-0.17, in good agreement with previous upper limits. We detect significant radial velocity variability in our multi-epoch observations and distinguish between variations caused by atmospheric activity and those caused by binarity. The binary fraction of NGC 330 RSGs is estimated by comparisons with simulated observations of systems with a range of input binary fractions. In this way, we account for observational biases and estimate the intrinsic binary fraction for RSGs in NGC 330 as f{RSG} = 0.3+/-0.1 for orbital periods in the range 2.3< log P [days] 0.1. Using the distribution of the luminosities of the RSG population, we estimate the age of NGC 330 to be 45+/-5 Myr and estimate a red straggler fraction of 50%. We estimate the binary fraction of RSGs in NGC 330 and conclude that it appears to be lower than that of main-sequence massive stars, which is expected because interactions between an RSG and a companion are assumed to effectively strip the RSG envelope., Accepted to A&A. 14 pages

A high fraction of massive stars are found to be binaries but only a few of them are reported as photometrically variable. By studying the populations of SB2 in the 30 Doradus region, we found a subset of them that have photometry from the OGLE project and that display variations in their light curves related to orbital motions. The goal of this study is to determine the dynamical masses and radii of the 26 binary components to investigate the mass-discrepancy problem and to provide an empirical mass-luminosity relation for the LMC. We use the PHOEBE programme to perform a systematic analysis of the OGLE V and I light curves obtained for 13 binary systems in 30 Dor. We adopt Teff, and orbital parameters derived previously to obtain the inclinations of the systems and the parameters of the individual components. Three systems display eclipses in their light curves, while the others only display ellipsoidal variations. We classify two systems as over-contact, five as semi-detached, and four as detached. The two remaining systems have uncertain configurations due to large uncertainties on their inclinations. The fact that systems display ellipsoidal variations has a significant impact on the inclination errors. From the dynamical masses, luminosities, and radii, we provide LMC-based empirical mass-luminosity and mass-radius relations, and we compare them to other relations given for the Galaxy, the LMC, and the SMC. These relations differ for different mass ranges, but do not seem to depend on the metallicity regimes. We also compare the dynamical, spectroscopic, and evolutionary masses of the stars in our sample. While the dynamical and spectroscopic masses agree with each other, the evolutionary masses are systematically higher, at least for stars in semi-detached systems. The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra of distant star-forming regions cannot be probed directly using either ground- or space-based telescopes due to the high cross-section for interaction of EUV photons with the interstellar medium. This makes EUV spectra poorly constrained. The mm/submm recombination lines of H and He, which can be observed from the ground, can serve as a reliable probe of the EUV. Here we present a study based on ALMA observations of three Galactic ultra-compact HII regions and the starburst region Sgr B2(M), in which we reconstruct the key parameters of the EUV spectra using mm recombination lines of HI, HeI and HeII. We find that in all cases the EUV spectra between 13.6 and 54.4 eV have similar frequency dependence: L_{\nu}~ \nu^{-4.5 +/- 0.4}. We compare the inferred values of the EUV spectral slopes with the values expected for a purely single stellar evolution model (Starburst99) and the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis code (BPASS). We find that the observed spectral slope differs from the model predictions. This may imply that the fraction of interacting binaries in HII regions is substantially lower than assumed in BPASS. HR 6819 was recently proposed to be a triple system consisting of an inner B-type giant + black hole binary with an orbital period of 40d and an outer Be tertiary. This interpretation is mainly based on two inferences: that the emission attributed to the outer Be star is stationary, and that the inner star, which is used as mass calibrator for the black hole, is a B-type giant. We re-investigate the properties of HR 6819 by spectral disentangling and an atmosphere analysis of the disentangled spectra to search for a possibly simpler alternative explanation for HR 6819. Disentangling implies that the Be component is not a static tertiary, but rather a component of the binary in the 40-d orbit. The inferred radial velocity amplitudes imply an extreme mass ratio of M_2/M_1 = 15 +/- 3. We infer spectroscopic masses of 0.4$^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ Msun and 6$^{+5}_{-3}$ Msun for the primary and secondary, which agree well with the dynamical masses for an inclination of i = 32 deg. This indicates that the primary might be a stripped star rather than a B-type giant. Evolutionary modelling suggests that a possible progenitor system would be a tight (P_i ~ 2d) B+B binary system that experienced conservative mass transfer. While the observed nitrogen enrichment of the primary conforms with the predictions of the evolutionary models, we find no indications for the predicted He enrichment. We suggest that HR 6819 is a binary system consisting of a stripped B-type primary and a rapidly-rotating Be star that formed from a previous mass-transfer event. In the framework of this interpretation, HR 6819 does not contain a black hole. Classical Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are massive, hydrogen depleted, post main-sequence stars that exhibit emission-line dominated spectra. For a given metallicity Z, stars exceeding a certain initial mass M_single(Z) can reach the WR phase through intrinsic mass-loss (single-star channel). Stars of lower masses can reach the WR phase via binary mass transfer (binary channel). It is commonly assumed that the binary channel dominates the formation of WR stars in environments with low Z such as the SMC and LMC. However, their reported WR binary fractions of 30-40% are comparable to that of the Galaxy. Here, we explain this apparent contradiction by considering the minimum initial mass M_spec(Z) needed for the stripped product to appear as a WR star. We calibrate M_spec(Z) using the lowest-luminosity WR stars in the Clouds and the Galaxy. A range of M_single(Z) values are explored using various evolution codes. We estimate the additional contribution of the binary channel by considering the interval [M_spec(Z), M_single(Z)], which characterises the initial-mass range in which binaries can form additional WR stars. Results: The WR-phenomenon ceases below luminosities of logL = 4.9, 5.25, and 5.6 [Lsun] in the Galaxy, LMC, and SMC, which translates to He-star masses of 7.5, 11, 17 Msun and initial masses of M_spec = 18, 23, 37 Msun. Stripped stars with lower initial masses in the respective galaxies would tend to not appear as WR stars. M_single lies in the range 20-30, 30-60, and > 40 Msun for the Galaxy, LMC, and SMC. We find that that the additional contribution of the binary channel is a non-trivial function of Z that cannot be conclusively claimed to be monotonically increasing with decreasing Z. Hence, one should not a-priori expect that binary interactions become increasingly important in forming WR stars at low Z, or that the WR binary fraction grows with decreasing Z., 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted to A&A on the 12.01.2020. Context: The identification and characterisation of populations of young massive stars in (giant) HII regions provides important constraints on i) the formation process of massive stars and their early feedback on the environment, and ii) the initial conditions for population synthesis models predicting the evolution of ensembles of stars. Aims: We identify and characterise the stellar populations of the following young giant HII regions: M8, G333.6-0.2, and NGC6357. Methods: We acquired H- and K-band spectra of around 200 stars using The K-band KMOS on the ESO Very Large Telescope. The targets for M8 and NGC6357 were selected from the MYStIX project, which combines X-ray observations with near-infrared and mid-infrared data. For G333.6-0.2, the sample selection is based on the near-infrared colours combined with X-ray data. We introduce an automatic spectral classification method in order to obtain temperatures and luminosities for the observed stars. We analyse the stellar populations using their photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic properties and compared the position of the stars in the Hertzprung-Russell diagram with stellar evolution models to constrain their ages and mass ranges. Results: We confirm the presence of candidate ionising sources in the three regions and report new ones, including the first spectroscopically identified O stars in G333.6-0.2. In M8 and NGC6357, two populations are identified: i) OB main-sequence stars ($M > 5~\rm{M_{\odot}}$) and ii) pre-main sequence stars ($M\approx0.5-5~\rm{M_{\odot}}$). The ages of the clusters are $\sim$1-3~Myr, $< 3$~Myr, and $\sim$0.5-3~Myr for M8, G333.6-0.2, and NGC6357, respectively. We show that MYStIX selected targets have $>$ 90\% probability of being members of the HII region, whereas a selection based on near infrared (NIR) colours leads to a membership probability of only $\sim$70\%., Accepted for publication in A&A. The massive O4.5 V + O5.5 V binary VFTS 352 in the Tarantula nebula is one of the shortest-period and most massive overcontact binaries known. Recent theoretical studies indicate that some of these systems could ultimately lead to the formation of gravitational waves via black hole binary mergers through the chemically homogeneous evolution pathway. By analyzing ultraviolet-optical phase-resolved spectroscopic data, we aim to constrain atmospheric and wind properties that could be later used to confront theoretical predictions from binary evolution. In particular, surface abundances are powerful diagnostics of the evolutionary status, mass transfer and the internal mixing processes. From a set of 32 VLT/FLAMES visual and 8 HST/COS ultraviolet spectra, we used spectral disentangling to separate the primary and secondary components. Using a genetic algorithm wrapped around the NLTE model atmosphere and spectral synthesis code FASTWIND, we perform an 11-parameter optimization to derive the atmospheric and wind parameters of both components, including the surface abundances of He, C, N, O and Si. We find that both components are hotter than expected compared to single-star evolutionary models indicating that additional mixing processes may be at play. Massive Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars dominate the radiative and mechanical energy budget of galaxies and probe a critical phase in the evolution of massive stars prior to core-collapse. It is not known whether core He-burning WR stars (classical WR, cWR) form predominantly through wind-stripping (w-WR) or binary stripping (b-WR). With spectroscopy of WR binaries so-far largely avoided due to its complexity, our study focuses on the 44 WR binaries / binary candidates of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, metallicity Z~0.5 Zsun), identified on the basis of radial velocity variations, composite spectra, or high X-ray luminosities. Relying on a diverse spectroscopic database, we aim to derive the physical and orbital parameters of our targets, confronting evolution models of evolved massive stars at sub-solar metallicity, and constraining the impact of binary interaction in forming them. Spectroscopy is performed using the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) code and cross-correlation techniques. Disentanglement is performed using the code Spectangular or the shift-and-add algorithm. Evolutionary status is interpreted using the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) code, exploring binary interaction and chemically-homogeneous evolution. No obvious dichotomy in the locations of apparently-single and binary WN stars on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is apparent. According to commonly used stellar evolution models (BPASS, Geneva), most apparently-single WN stars could not have formed as single stars, implying that they were stripped by an undetected companion. We perform an extensive numerical study of the evolution of massive binary systems to predict the peculiar velocities that stars obtain when their companion collapses and disrupts the system. Our aim is to (i) identify which predictions are robust against model uncertainties and assess their implications, (ii) investigate which physical processes leave a clear imprint and may therefore be constrained observationally and (iii) provide a suite of publicly available model predictions, to allow for the use of kinematic constraints from the Gaia mission. We find that 22+26 −8 % of all massive binary systems merge prior to the first core-collapse in the system. Of the remainder, 86+11 −22 % become unbound because of the core-collapse. Remarkably, this rarely produce runaway stars (observationally defined as stars with velocities above 30 km s−1 ). These are outnumbered by more than an order of magnitude by slower unbound companions, or “walkaway stars”. This is a robust outcome of our simulations and is due to the reversal of the mass ratio prior to the explosion and widening of the orbit, as we show analytically and numerically. For stars more massive than 15 M , we estimate that 10+5 −8% are walkaways and only 0.5−0.4% +1.0 are runaways, nearly all of which have accreted mass from their companion. Our findings are consistent with earlier studies, however the low runaway fraction we find is in tension with observed fractions of about 10%. Thus, astrometric data on presently single massive stars can potentially constrain the physics of massive binary evolution. Finally, we show that the high end of the mass distributions of runaway stars is very sensitive to the assumed black hole natal kicks and propose this as a potentially stringent test for the explosion mechanism. We also discuss companions remaining bound which can evolve into X-ray and gravitational wave sources., Each tarball contains the output of our population synthesis simulations (see Tab. 1 in the paper). Each system is logged at the time of the first SN and we store initial values of masses, period, and information on the explosion (kick amplitude and direction, fallback fraction) and the pre-CC and post-CC orbital and kinematic properties. We also provide the time each system spends in phases with at least one of the two stars on the main sequence.
