Abstract Background & aims Gut microbiota is closely related to the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the differences in bacterial co-abundance groups (CAGs) between tumor tissue (TT) and normal tissue (NT), as well as their associations with clinical features, are needed to be clarified. Methods Bacterial 16 S rRNA sequencing was performed by using TT samples and NT samples of 251 patients with colorectal cancer. Microbial diversity, taxonomic characteristics, microbial composition, and functional pathways were compared between TT and NT. Hierarchical clustering was used to construct CAGs. Results Four CAGs were grouped in the hierarchical cluster analysis. Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a simple but effective nomogram to predict risk of septic cardiomyopathy (SCM) in the intensive care unit (ICU). We analyzed data from patients who were first admitted to the ICU for sepsis between 2008 and 2019 in the MIMIC-IV database, with no history of heart disease, and divided them into a training cohort and an internal validation cohort at a 7:3 ratio. SCM is defined as sepsis diagnosed in the absence of other cardiac diseases, with echocardiographic evidence of left (or right) ventricular systolic or diastolic dysfunction and a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of less than 50%. Variables were selected from the training cohort using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression to develop an early predictive model for septic cardiomyopathy. A nomogram was constructed using logistic regression analysis and its receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and calibration were evaluated in two cohorts. A total of 1562 patients participated in this study, with 1094 in the training cohort and 468 in the internal validation cohort. SCM occurred in 13.4% (147 individuals) in the training cohort, 16.0% (75 individuals) in the internal validation cohort. After adjusting for various confounding factors, we constructed a nomogram that includes SAPS II, Troponin T, CK-MB index, white blood cell count, and presence of atrial fibrillation. The area under the curve (AUC) for the training cohort was 0.804 (95% CI 0.764–0.844), and the Hosmer–Lemeshow test showed good calibration of the nomogram (P = 0.288). Our nomogram also exhibited good discriminative ability and calibration in the internal validation cohort. Our nomogram demonstrated good potential in identifying patients at increased risk of SCM in the ICU.

Abstract The decrease in assisted reproductive technology success among older women, attributed to decreased oocyte quantity and quality, poses a significant challenge. Currently, no consensus on the optimal ovarian stimulation protocol for older women undergoing IVF exists. This retrospectively registered cohort study aimed to compare the cumulative live birth rate (CLBR), time to live birth (TTLB), and cost-effectiveness among women older than 35 years who were receiving either the gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) or clomiphene citrate and gonadotropin cotreatment with ovarian stimulation (CC cotreatment) protocol. To compare treatment outcomes, we performed propensity score matching (PSM) on 2871 IVF cycles in women older than 35 years who received either the GnRHa or CC cotreatment protocol, resulting in 375 cycles in each group. Additionally, a decision tree model was utilized to assess the cost-effectiveness of the two protocols. Following PSM, both groups had similar baseline characteristics. The CC cotreatment protocol resulted in a greater rate of cycle cancellation (13.07% vs. 8.00%, p = 0.032), but the groups maintained comparable fertilization rates and embryo quality. Although the TTLB was longer in the CC cotreatment group, the CLBR per initial cycle (41.07% vs. 45.33%, p = 0.269) and delivery outcomes were similar between the two groups at the 24 months follow-up. Additionally, the average cost per live birth in the CC cotreatment group was 21.27% lower than in the GnRHa group (¥32,301.42 vs. ¥39,174.22). In conclusion, for women older than 35 years undergoing IVF, the CC cotreatment protocol offered a comparable CLBR to the GnRHa protocol but with reduced costs, indicating its potential as a viable and cost-effective ovarian stimulation option. Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the outcomes of the combination technique of strip free gingival grafts (SFGG) and xenogeneic collagen matrix (XCM) in augmenting the width of keratinized mucosa (KMW) around dental implants, and compare its efficacy with the historical control group (FGG). Methods Thirteen patients with at least one site with KMW ≤ 2 mm after implant surgery were included and received SFGG in combination with XCM. Another thirteen patients with the same inclusion and exclusion criteria from the previous trial received FGG alone. The same outcomes as the previous trial were evaluated. KMW, thickness of keratinized mucosa (KMT), gingival index (GI) and probing depth (PD) were measured at baseline, 2 and 6 months. Postoperative pain, patient satisfaction and aesthetic outcomes were also assessed. Results At 6 months after surgery, the combination technique could attain 3.3 ± 1.6 mm of KMW. No significant change could be detected in GI or PD at 6 months compared to those at 2 months (p > 0.05). The postoperative pain and patient satisfaction in VAS were 2.6 ± 1.2 and 9.5 ± 1.2. The total score of aesthetic outcomes was 3.8 ± 1.2. In order to explore the effect of heat shock treatment (HT) on the storage quality of fresh-cut lily bulbs, changes in the quality characteristics of lily bulb slices (Lilium davidii var. unicolor Cotton) exposed to heat shock treatment (hot water at 55 ℃, 2 min) were examined during storage at 4 ℃. The results demonstrated that HT effectively maintained the color of fresh-cut lily bulbs during storage and preserved the cell wall structure. The activities of peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) were suppressed by HT. Meanwhile, the accumulation of total phenolics (TP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and the increase of relative electric conductivity (REC) were delayed, which led to reduced mass loss, decay rate, and browning degree. Comparison with the control group, the activities of POD, PPO and PAL in the HT group decreased by 95.26%, 21.74% and 41.65%, respectively. The decay rate, browning degree, MDA content, REC and TP content in the HT group were 10.56%, 1.55, 0.13 μmol/g, 19.71% and 3.51 mg/g, respectively, which were all significantly lower than those in the control group (P 0.05). Furthermore, plasma membrane dissolution did not appear in the HT group until the 40th day, which was 30 days later than the control group. Therefore, HT effectively delayed the quality deterioration of fresh-cut lily bulbs during storage and prolonged the storage time.

The first occurrence of Marasmiellomycena and Pulverulina in the Chinese mycobiota are reported, M. tomentosa and P. flavoalba, two new species and M. albodescendens, a new combination, revealed by phylogenetic analyses and morphological study. These newly-recorded genera, Marasmiellomycena, which can be distinguished by their agaricoid basidiomata, dark-coloured stipe, sarcodimitic tramal structure, stipitipellis with yellow to yellowish-brown pigments and yellow-pigmented thick-walled caulocystidia and Pulverulina, which differs from other genera of Porotheleaceae by its pruinose stipe, decurrent lamellae, inamyloid basidiospores and absence of hymenial cystidia. We also formally describe three other new species of Porotheleaceae collected from Chinese temperate to subtropical zones of Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces: Clitocybula fuscostriata, Gerronema brunneosquamulosum and Leucoinocybe subglobispora. Furthermore, we include the results of a phylogenetic analysis of Porotheleaceae, based on a multi-locus (ITS, nrLSU and rpb2) dataset. According to this analysis, Chrysomycena, Clitocybula, Delicatula, Hydropodia, Hydropus, Leucoinocybe, Marasmiellomycena, Megacollybia, Pulverulina, Trogia and Vizzinia are monophyletic. However, Gerronema is identified as polyphyletic and, additionally, Porotheleum does not form a monophyletic group either because Porotheleum parvulum and Porotheleum albidum are “unassigned” in phylogenetic analysis. The results of our phylogenetic analyses, coupled with morphological observations, confirm recognition of these new taxa. Morphological descriptions, photographs, line drawings and comparisons with closely-related taxa are presented for the new species. A key to the 22 species belonging to nine genera of Porotheleaceae in China is also provided.

Abstract Background This study aimed to compare the visual outcomes of the first operated eyes with those of the second operated eyes following small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Methods A total of 202 patients (404 eyes) underwent SMILE using the tear film mark centration method for myopia and myopic astigmatism correction. Baseline characteristics, objective optical quality, decentered displacement, induced corneal aberrations, and modulation transfer function (MTF) values were assessed. Linear regression analyzed the relationship between decentration and visual quality parameters, including corneal aberrations and MTF values. Results No significant difference was observed in objective visual quality, efficacy, and safety indexes between the two groups (all P > 0.05). The average decentered displacement for the first and second surgical eyes was 0.278 ± 0.17 mm and 0.315 ± 0.15 mm, respectively (P = 0.002). The horizontal coma in the first surgical eyes were notably lower than in the second (P = 0.000). Irradiation-induced defects such as dislocation loops, cavities or solute clusters and chemical composition segregation of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel are the root causes of irradiation embrittlement. Combining two nucleation mechanisms, namely, the uniform nucleation and non-uniform nucleation of solute clusters (such as Cu-rich phase), a cluster kinetic simulation was established based on the reaction rate theory, and the co-evolution of matrix damage and Cu-rich phase in low-copper RPV steel was simulated under irradiation. And the average size and number density of defective clusters and solute clusters were established with irradiation dose. Compared with the average size and number density of dislocation loops observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of proton irradiated RPV steel at 290°C, the verification results show that the cluster dynamics model considering both the nucleation mechanism of interstitial dislocation loops and vacancy clusters can well simulate the irradiation damage behavior of materials.

ObjectiveTo observe the effect of Pseudomonas aeruginosa mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (PA-MSHA) on the prognosis and the incidence of lymphatic leakage in patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC).MethodA total of 129 patients who underwent RC in Lanzhou University Second Hospital from 2013 to 2022 were enrolled in this study. They were divided into 43 patients treated with PA-MSHA and 86 patients in the control group. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was applied to reduce potential selection bias. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to analyze the effect of PA-MSHA on the survival of patients and the incidence of postoperative lymphatic leakage.ResultsThe PA-MSHA group exhibited improved overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates compared to the control group. The 3-year and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates for the PA-MSHA group were 69.1% and 53.2%, respectively, compared to 55.6% and 45.3% for the control group (Log-rank=3.218, P=0.072). The 3-year and 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates for the PA-MSHA group were 73.3% and 56.5%, respectively, compared to 58.0% and 47.3% for the control group (Log-rank=3.218, P=0.072). Additionally, the 3-year and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates for the PA-MSHA group were 74.4% and 56.8%, respectively, compared to 57.1% and 52.2% for the control group (Log-rank=2.016, P=0.156). Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicates that lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis are poor prognostic factors for patients, while the use of PA-MSHA can improve patients’ OS (HR: 0.547, 95%CI: 0.304–0.983, P=0.044), PFS (HR: 0.469, 95%CI: 0.229–0.959, P=0.038) and CSS (HR: 0.484, 95%CI: 0.257–0.908, P=0.024). The same trend was observed in the cohort After IPTW adjustment. Although there was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative lymphatic leakage [18.6% (8/35) vs. 15.1% (84.9%), P=0.613] and pelvic drainage volume [470 (440) ml vs. 462.5 (430) ml, P=0.814] between PA-MSHA group and control group, PA-MSHA could shorten the median retention time of drainage tube (7.0 d vs 9.0 d) (P=0.021).ConclusionPA-MSHA may improve radical cystectomy in patients with OS, PFS, and CSS, shorten the pelvic drainage tube retention time.

Integrating trait and phylogenetic data are increasingly being used to enhance our understanding of the underlying community assembly processes and optimize the interpretation of unmeasured, phylogenically conserved traits. The biodiversity of Huangshan, China, was higher, but it was suffered from some damage, such as biological invasion and human disturbance. We sampled 176 species from three different forests (EBF: evergreen broadleaf forest; DBF: deciduous broadleaf forest; MNBF: mixed needleleaf and broadleaf forest) which are the representative communities of Mt. Huangshan. Then, we measured six functional traits (leaf thickness, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf carbon concentration, leaf nitrogen concentration and leaf phosphorus concentration) and constructed a molecular phylogeny tree to assess community structure using species trait-phylogenetic distances. Results showed that six traits are more phylogenetically convergent than predicted, which was not closely related to the evolutionary history of species. The contribution of phylogenetic distance and functional distance to community construction was equal in total layer and more importance was given to functional distances for tree and shrub layer, indicating that closely related species tended to be phenotypically different. The functional trait-phylogenetic of EBF and MNBF was clustering, while DBF exhibited functional trait-phylogenetic over-dispersion. In other words, environmental filtering appears to be the dominant force in EBF and MNBF, while competitive exclusion appears to become more important in DBF. Our study also indicates that spatial factors resulted in a higher explanatory power than environmental factors. In according to better protect forest biodiversity, species coexistence mechanisms should be incorporated into the management of forest communities and to predict their presentation in future environmental scenarios.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) and the Arctic are the most sensitive regions to global climate change. However, the interdecadal varibility of winter extreme precipitation over the TP and its linkage with Arctic sea ice are still unclear. In this study, the characteristics and mechisnems of the TP extreme precipitation (TPEP) influenced by Arctic sea ice on interdecadal timescale are studied based on the daily precipitation, monthly sea ice concentration and ERA5 reanalysis data from 1980 to 2018. We found that the dominant mode of the TPEP in winter mostly exhibits a uniform spatial variation on the interdecadal timescale, with an opposite weak variation in the southeastern TP, and the Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC) before 2002 are larger than that after 2003. The interdecadal variation of TPEP is affected by two teleconnection wave trains regulated by the Barents and Kara Sea ice. In the light ice years, a remarkable positive geopotential height (HGT) anomaly appears over the Barents‒Kara Sea and a remarkable negative HGT anomaly is located over the Lake Baikal. Two wave trains originating over the Barents‒Kara Sea can be observed. The southern branch forms a wave train through the North Atlantic along the subtropical westerly jet stream, showing a ‘+ − + − +’ pattern of HGT anomalies from Arctic to the TP. Negative HGT anomaly controls the western TP, which creates dynamic and water vapor conditions for the TPEP. The northern branch forms a wave train through the Lake Baikal and the southeast of the TP, showing a ‘+ − +’ HGT anomaly distribution. Positive HGT anomaly controls the southeastern TP, which is not conducive to precipitation in the region. When the SIC in the Barents‒Kara Sea increases, the situation is opposite. The above analysis also reveals the reason for the difference in the east‒west distribution of the TPEP.

Abstract Background Due to its enormous biomass, Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) plays a crucial role in the Antarctic Ocean ecosystem. In recent years, Antarctic krill has found extensive application in aquaculture, emerging as a sustainable source of aquafeed with ideal nutritional profiles. However, a comprehensive study focused on the detailed effects of dietary Antarctic krill on aquaculture animals, especially farmed marine fishes, is yet to be demonstrated. Results In this study, a comparative experiment was performed using juvenile P. leopardus, fed with diets supplemented with Antarctic krill (the krill group) or without Antarctic krill (the control group). Histological observation revealed that dietary Antarctic krill could reduce lipid accumulation in the liver while the intestine exhibited no obvious changes. Enzyme activity measurements demonstrated that dietary Antarctic krill had an inhibitory effect on oxidative stress in both the intestine and the liver. By comparative transcriptome analysis, a total of 1,597 and 1,161 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the intestine and liver, respectively. Functional analysis of the DEGs showed multiple enriched terms significantly related to cholesterol metabolism, antioxidants, and immunity. Furthermore, the expression profiles of representative DEGs, such as dhcr7, apoa4, sc5d, and scarf1, were validated by qRT-PCR and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Finally, a comparative transcriptome analysis was performed to demonstrate the biased effects of dietary Antarctic krill and astaxanthin on the liver of P. leopardus. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that dietary Antarctic krill could reduce lipid accumulation in the liver of P. leopardus, enhance antioxidant capacities in both the intestine and liver, and exhibit molecular-level improvements in lipid metabolism, immunity, and antioxidants. It will contribute to understanding the protective effects of Antarctic krill in P. leopardus and provide insights into aquaculture nutritional strategies.

Abstract In her diaries, novels, and essays, Virginia Woolf records the psychological trauma the British people suffered from in the soundscape of military weapons during the two world wars and describes its delayed effects on the populace after the wars. Drawing upon the notions of the soundscape and Johan Galtung’s violence triangle, this paper explores how Woolf’s works portray the traumatic experience brought by the soundscape of military weapons to soldiers and ordinary citizens during the two world wars and discusses how the roar of cars and planes in her works induces the public’s traumatic memory after the wars. Then, through a close study of her essay “Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid”, this paper contends that the soundscape of German air raids compels Woolf to contemplate the roles of feminism in opposing the wars and healing war trauma.

Abstract Purpose To present the widely unknown perioperative outcomes and continence status of bladder cancer patients following robotic-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with Mainz pouch II urinary diversion (UD). Materials and methods From November 2020 to December 2023, 37 bladder cancer patients who underwent RARC with Mainz pouch II UD were retrospectively assessed (ChiCTR2300070279). The results, which included patient demographics, perioperative data, continence, and complications (early ≤ 30 days and late ≤ 30 days) were reported using the RC-pentafecta criteria. RC-pentafecta criteria included ≥ 16 lymph nodes removed, negative soft tissue surgical margins, absence of major (Grade III–IV) complication at 90 days, absence of clinical recurrence at ≤ 12 months, and absence of long-term UD-related sequelae. A numeric rating scale assessed patient satisfaction with urinary continence 30 days after surgery. The validated Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM) questionnaire was used to evaluate bowel function. The Kaplan-Meier curve was used to evaluate overall survival (OS). Results Of the 37 patients evaluated over a median (range) follow-up period of 23.0 (12.0-36.5) months. The median (range) age was 65 (40–81) years. The median (range) time to urinary continence after surgery was 2.3 (1.5-6) months. Of the 37 patients, 31 (83.8%) were continent both during the day and at night, 34 (91.9%) were continent during the day, 32 (86.5%) were continent at night, 35 (94.6%) were satisfied with their urinary continence status, and 21 (56.8%) were very satisfied. The mean (range) voiding frequency was 6 (4–10) during the day and 3 (2-5.5) at night. The mean (range) PAC-SYM total score was 9.50 (4.00–15.00). In 12 (32.4%) of the patients, RC-pentafecta was achieved, and achieving RC-pentafecta was linked to better satisfaction scores (7.3 vs. 5.5, p = 0.034). There was no significant difference between RC-pentafecta and No RC-pentafecta groups in terms of OS (25.6 vs. 21.5 months, p = 0.16). 7 (19.4%) patients experienced late complications. Conclusions Mainz pouch II UD following RARC in bladder cancer patients results in a satisfactory continence rate. Achieving RC-pentafecta was correlated with better satisfaction scores. The intracorporeal approach to Mainz pouch II UD is beneficial for female patients due to its reduced invasiveness. Abstract The spread of many infectious diseases relies on aerosol transmission to the respiratory tract. Here we design an intranasal mask comprising a positively-charged thermosensitive hydrogel and cell-derived micro-sized vesicles with a specific viral receptor. We show that the positively charged hydrogel intercepts negatively charged viral aerosols, while the viral receptor on vesicles mediates the entrapment of viruses for inactivation. We demonstrate that when displaying matched viral receptors, the intranasal masks protect the nasal cavity and lung of mice from either severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or influenza A virus. With computerized tomography images of human nasal cavity, we further conduct computational fluid dynamics simulation and three-dimensional printing of an anatomically accurate human nasal cavity, which is connected to human lung organoids to generate a human respiratory tract model. Both simulative and experimental results support the suitability of intranasal masks in humans, as the likelihood of viral respiratory infections induced by different variant strains is dramatically reduced.

Layered rare earth hydroxides (LREHs) are a new family of ion-exchangeable layered metal hydroxides, which have extensive applications in various fields due to the unique properties of rare earth cations in the layered structure and the anion exchange capacity. The transformation of layered metal hydroxides to new layered phases that can be restored through the memory effect is critical for their chemistry and applications. However, the structure details of these new phases such as the coordination environments of rare earth cations/counterions and their evolution as a function of calcination temperature remain unclear to date. Herein, a comprehensive 89Y/35Cl solid-state NMR (ssNMR) and theoretical modeling approach was used to reveal the structural evolution of a representative LREH, namely LYH-Cl, upon calcination. We first identified partial decomposition products of Y3O(OH)5Cl2 and Y(OH)3 during the dehydration stage, then uncovered the preferential removal of hydroxide ions on yttrium sites coordinated with chlorine during the dehydroxylation stage, and finally determined the preferential removal of chlorine exposed to the surface of layers during the dechlorination stage. The coordination environments of Y3+ and Cl− undergo significant changes upon calcination, revealed by ssNMR experiments. These findings thus help us to overcome the obstacles impeding the rational design and synthesis of LREH-based functional materials via memory effect, underscoring the vast potential of ssNMR in deepening the understanding of layered metal hydroxides and related materials.

Abstract Given the importance of coastal upwelling systems to ocean productivity, fisheries, and biogeochemical cycles, their response to climate change is of great interest. However, there is no consensus on future productivity changes in these systems, which may be controlled by multiple drivers including wind‐driven and geostrophic transport, stratification, and source water properties. Here we use an ensemble of regional ocean projections and recently developed upwelling indices for the California Current System to disentangle these sometimes‐competing influences. Some changes are consistent among models (e.g., decreased mixed layer depth), while for others there is a lack of agreement even on the direction of future change (e.g., nitrate concentration in upwelled waters). Despite models' diverging projections of productivity changes, they agree that those changes are predominantly driven by subsurface nitrate concentrations, not by upwelling strength. Our results highlight the need for more attention to processes governing subsurface nutrient changes, not just upwelling strength.

This study comprehensively analyzed the long-term changes of Meiyu in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River with regard to precipitation, precipitation threshold, and interdecadal changes in atmospheric circulation. Results revealed obvious new features of Meiyu precipitation since 2000. (1) Meiyu precipitation shows a significant linear increase trend, with an average increment of 73.5 mm every 10 years. The increase in torrential rain is the most significant, accounting for 61% of the total precipitation increase, and its proportion has been increasing, while the proportions of light, moderate, and heavy rain in the total precipitation have been decreasing. (2) At the interdecadal scale, Meiyu precipitation and the local surface average temperature show opposite changes. Meiyu precipitation decreases by approximately 150 mm for every 1°C increase in the average temperature. This inverse correlation was not evident before 2000. (3) The saturated specific humidity in this area shows a significant increasing trend, indicating that precipitation in this area is caused by a higher threshold of atmospheric saturation and condensation, which may be a reason for the low Meiyu precipitation during high-temperature years. (4) The main atmospheric circulation in East Asia associated with Meiyu shows clear interdecadal changes, including the Western North Pacific Subtropical High and South Asian High having become significantly stronger and having extended westward and eastward, respectively, thereby facilitating the occurrence and persistence of Meiyu precipitation. The atmospheric circulation patterns associated with Meiyu, such as the Western North Pacific Subtropical High and South Asian High, have more significant impacts on Meiyu precipitation.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen causing severe infections. The circadian rhythm is the internal rhythm mechanism of an organism and plays an important role in coping with changes in the 24-h circadian rhythm. Disruption of the circadian rhythm can lead to immune, behavioral, mental, and other related disorders. Whether K. pneumoniae can disrupt the circadian rhythm after infection remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of K. pneumoniae NTUH-K2044 infection on biological rhythm and inflammation in zebrafish using behavioral assays, quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR, neutrophil and macrophage transgenic fish, and drug treatment. The results showed that K. pneumoniae infection decreased the motor activity of zebrafish and reduced the circadian rhythm amplitude, phase, and period. The expression of core circadian rhythm-associated genes increased under light-dark conditions, whereas they were downregulated under continuous darkness. Analysis of Klebsiella pneumoniae-mediated inflammation using Tg(mpx:EGFP) and Tg(mpeg:EGFP) transgenic zebrafish, expressing fluorescent neutrophils and macrophages, respectively, showed increased induction of inflammatory cells, upregulated expression of inflammatory factor genes, and stronger inflammatory responses under light-dark conditions. These effects were reversed by the anti-inflammatory drug G6PDi-1, and the expression of clock genes following K. pneumoniae treatment was disrupted. We determined the relationship among K. pneumoniae, inflammation, and the circadian rhythm, providing a theoretical reference for studying circadian rhythm disorders caused by inflammation.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of long noncoding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA) SNHG16 on kidney clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) cells by targeting miR-506-3p/ETS proto-oncogene 1, transcription factor (ETS1)/RAS/Extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) molecular axis, thus to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of KIRC in the future. BackgroundThe current treatment strategy for metastatic Hormone-Sensitive Prostate Cancer (mHSPC) is the combination of Androgen Receptor Signaling Inhibitors (ARSIs) medicines with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). However, there is a lack of real-world data comparing the efficacy of different ARSI pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness and safety of bicalutamide, abiraterone, enzalutamide, and apalutamide in combination with ADT for patients with mHSPC.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 82 patients diagnosed with mHSPC, including 18 patients treated with abiraterone acetate with prednisone, 21 patients with enzalutamide, 20 patients with apalutamide, and 23 patients with bicalutamide. We evaluated PSA progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), imaging progression-free survival (r PFS), castration resistance progression-free survival (CRPC-PFS), and overall survival (OS) using Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. Additionally, we explored relevant factors affecting prognosis through univariate and multivariate Cox risk-proportionality models. PSA response rates at 3, 6, and 12 months, nadir PSA levels (nPSA), and time to nadir (TTN) in different medication subgroups after treatment were documented, and we used one-way ANOVA to determine the effect of these measures on patient prognosis.ResultsIn comparison with bicalutamide, both enzalutamide and apalutamide have shown significant advantages in delaying disease progression among mHSPC patients. Specifically, enzalutamide has been found to significantly prolong PSA-PFS (HR 2.244; 95% CI 1.366-3.685, p=0.001), rPFS (HR 2.539; 95% CI 1.181-5.461; p= 0.007), CRPC-PFS (HR 2.131; 95% CI 1.295-3.506; p= 0.003), and OS (HR 2.06; 95% CI 1.183-3.585; P=0.005). Similarly, apalutamide has significantly extended PSA-PFS (HR 5.071; 95% CI 1.711-15.032; P= 0.003) and CRPC-PFS (HR 6.724; 95% CI 1.976-22.878; P=0.002) among patients. On the other hand, the use of abiraterone in combination with ADT did not demonstrate a significant advantage in delaying diseases progression when compared with the other three agents in mHSPC patients. There were no significant differences in overall adverse event rates among the four pharmaceuticals in terms of safety. Additionally, the observation of PSA kinetics revealed that enzalutamide, apalutamide, and abiraterone acetate had a significant advantage in achieving deep PSA response (PSA ≤ 0.2 ng/ml) compared with bicalutamide (p=0.007 at 12 months). Enzalutamide and apalutamide exhibited preeminence efficacy, with no substantial difference observed between the two medications.ConclusionsAbiraterone, enzalutamide, and apalutamide were found to significantly reduce and stabilize PSA levels in mHSPC patients more quickly and thoroughly than bicalutamide. Furthermore, enzalutamide and apalutamide were found to significantly prolong survival and delay disease progression in mHSPC patients compared with bicalutamide. It should be noted that abiraterone did not demonstrate a significant advantage in delaying disease compared with enzalutamide and apalutamide. After conducting drug toxicity analyses, it was determined that there were no significant differences among the four drugs.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most fatal cancers with high morbidity and mortality, which severely affects people's lives. Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 858 (LINC00858) was confirmed to promote the progression of colorectal cancer and lung cancer. However, the role of lncRNA LINC00858 is still unknown in ESCC. Herein, the main purpose of research was to explore LINC00858 function and its impact on ESCC cell biological behaviors. RT-qPCR was used to test the expression of LINC00858, miR-425-5p and ABL proto-oncogene 2 (ABL2) in ESCC cells. Functional experiments such as EdU assay, CCK-8 assay, transwell assay and Western blot assay were conducted to investigate the biological behaviors of ESCC cells. Luciferase reporter assay and RIP assay were implemented to determine the binding situation among RNAs. LINC00858 expression was abnormally high in ESCC cells and down-regulation of LINC00858 could restrain the proliferation, invasion, migration and EMT process of ESCC cells. Furthermore, miR-425-5p was proved to be sponged by LINC00858 and was down-regulated in ESCC cells. Besides, we discovered that miR-425-5p could target ABL2. Moreover, knockdown of ABL2 reversed the promoting function of miR-425-5p inhibitor on ESCC progression. LINC00858 aggravated ESCC progression via regulating the miR-425-5p/ABL2 axis.

Metabolic reprogramming is one of the prominent features that distinguishes tumor cells from normal cells. The role of metabolic abnormalities in regulating innate immunity is poorly understood. In this study, we found that IDI1 is significantly upregulated in liver cancer. IDI1 has no significant effect on the growth or invasion of liver cancer cells but significantly promotes liver cancer development in mice. Through molecular mechanism studies, we found that IDI1 interacts with the important regulator of innate immunity cGAS and recruits the E3 ligase TRIM41 to promote cGAS ubiquitination and degradation, inhibiting the cGAS-Sting signaling pathway. IDI1 inhibits the phosphorylation of TBK1 and the downstream factor IRF3 as well as the expression of CCL5 and CXCL10. In summary, this study revealed the important role of the metabolic enzyme IDI1 in the regulation of innate immunity, suggesting that it may be a potential target for liver cancer treatment.

Abstract Background Entomopathogenic fungi, representing a class of microbial agent, have been widely used in the field of pest management. The objective of this work was to isolate different species of fungi and to evaluate their virulence against the destructive and invasive red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Results Two new entomopathogenic fungal strains isolated from dead diseased RPWs were identified as Metarhizium anisopliae ZZ-A1 and Fusarium oxysporum ZZ-L1 using growth characteristics, morphology, and rDNA-ITS sequence amplification. Bioassays showed that M. anisopliae ZZ-A1 strain exhibited significantly higher corrected mortality than F. oxysporum ZZ-L1 strain (90.92 vs. 77.28%) in fourth instar RPW larvae 12 days after treatment with a concentration of 1.0 × 1010 conidia/ml, as well as low median lethal concentration (LC50) and median lethal time (LT50) values. Conclusions The results suggest that both fungal isolates can potentially be developed as effective and persistent a microbial agent against this widespread pest, RPW. However, M. anisopliae ZZ-A1 showed relatively higher insecticidal activity than F. oxysporum ZZ-L1.

Abstract Background In muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) combined with radical cystectomy (RC) is critical in reducing disease recurrence, with GC (gemcitabine and cisplatin) being one of the most commonly used NACs. Different GC schedules have been used, but the best neoadjuvant regimen is still unknown. The clinical outcomes of 3 and 4 cycles of neoadjuvant GC are compared in this systematic review and meta-analysis to determine which is best for patients with MIBC. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CBM, CNKI, WAN FANG DATA, and meeting abstracts to identify relevant studies up to March 2023. Studies that compared 3 and 4 cycles of neoadjuvant GC for MIBC were included. The primary outcomes were pCR, pDS, OS, and CSS. The secondary outcome was recurrence and SAEs. Results A total of 3 studies, with 1091 patients, were included in the final analysis. Patients that received 4 cycles of GC had a higher pCR (OR = 0.66; 95% CI, 0.50–0.87; p = 0.003) and pDS (OR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.48–0.84; p = 0.002) than those who received 3 cycles. Regarding recurrence rate (OR = 1.23; 95% CI, 0.91–1.65; p = 0.18), there were no appreciable differences between the 3 and 4 cycles of GC. Survival parameters such as OS (HR, 1.35; 95% CI, 0.86–2.12; p = 0.19) and CSS (HR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.82–1.38; p = 0.20) were similar. Only one trial reported on the outcomes of SAEs. And there were no statistically significant differences in thrombocytopenia, infection rate, neutropenic fever, anemia, or decreased renal function between patients. The neutropenia of patients was statistically different (OR = 0.72; 95% CI, 0.52–0.99; p = 0.04). Conclusion The 4-cycle GC regimen was superior to the 3-cycle regimen in only the pCR and pDS results. Survival and recurrence rates were similar between the two regimens. In both treatment regimes, the toxicity profile was manageable. However, due to the inherent drawbacks of retrospective research, this should be regarded with caution.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) among HPV-positive women undergoing colposcopy at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Hunan, China. Additionally, we aimed to assess the impact of C. trachomatis or M. genitalium co-infection with HPV on the severity of cervical lesions. Methods We collected HPV data, cervical cytology results, and demographic information from 439 women attending colposcopy. Cervical swabs were obtained for simultaneous amplification testing (SAT) of C. trachomatis and M. genitalium. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between sexually transmitted pathogens and cervical lesions. Results Among the participants, C. trachomatis was detected in 17 (3.87%) individuals, and M. genitalium in 16 (3.64%) individuals. There was no co-infection of C. trachomatis and M. genitalium. The highest prevalence of M. genitalium was observed in women aged 19–30 years (10.20%; 95% CI, 1.41-18.99%), with a subsequent decline in prevalence with increasing age (Ptrend = 0.014). The most common HPV subtype in our study was HPV52 (30.79%), followed by HPV16 (18.62%), HPV58 (16.95%), and HPV53 (10.02%). Infection with HPV16 (OR = 3.43, 95% CI, 2.13–5.53), HPV31 (OR = 3.70, 95% CI, 1.44–9.50), and HPV33 (OR = 3.71, 95% CI, 1.43–9.67) was associated with an increased severity of cervical lesions, while HPV53 infection was not likely to lead to advanced cervical lesions (OR = 0.45, 95% CI, 0.23–0.89). Abstract Background Caring behavior among nurses would have an impact on patient outcomes. External organizational job resources and personal internal psychological resources are correlated to nurses’ caring behavior. Authentic leadership and psychological capital were shown to be correlated with nurses’ caring behavior in previous studies. However, the relationships among the three are nevertheless unclear. This study aimed to examine if psychological capital could act as a mediator between nursing managers’ authentic leadership and nurses’ caring behavior. Methods In December 2021, a total of 3,662 nurses were recruited from 37 hospitals in Anhui Province, China. They filled out online surveys, including general demographic information, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and the Caring Behavior Inventory. Structural Equation Modeling and the bootstrapping procedure were used to examine the mediating role of psychological capital. Abstract The prognosis with pancreatic cancer is among the poorest of any human cancer. One of the important factors is the tumor hypoxia. Targeting tumor hypoxia is considered a desirable therapeutic option. However, it has not been translated into clinical success in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. With enhanced cytotoxicities against hypoxic pancreatic cancer cells, BE-43547A2 (BE) may serve as a promising template for hypoxia target strategy. Here, based on rational modification, a BE prodrug (NMP-BE) is encapsulated into sulfonated azocalix[5]arene (SAC5A) to generate a supramolecular dual hypoxia-responsive complex NMP-BE@SAC5A. Benefited from the selective load release within cancer cells, NMP-BE@SAC5A markedly suppresses tumor growth at low dose in pancreatic cancer cells xenograft murine model without developing systemic toxicity. Plant ecological strategies are essential for assessing habitat stress and disturbance and evaluating community productivity. These strategies provide theoretical frameworks for maintaining the natural state of vegetation and enhancing productivity. The functional traits of leaves reflect a plant’s responses to environmental changes and contribute to understanding ecosystem stability, providing a basis for species diversity maintenance and effective conservation efforts. The Wuyishan National Park, a biodiversity hotspot in China, is a focal point for ecological research. Its evergreen, broad-leaved forest, the zonal vegetation of Mt. Wuyi, underpins plant diversity protection in the region. This study investigates the CSR (competitor, stress-tolerator, ruderal) strategy of 126 species on Wuyi Mountain to elucidate prevalent ecological strategies. The main ecological strategy of plants in the study area is the CS (competitor, stress-tolerator) strategy. The species exhibit nine categories. The most abundant ecological strategy is S/CS (plants from Fagaceae), accounting for 38%, followed by S/CSR at 23% (plants from Theaceae), CS at 20% (plants from Fagaceae and Theaceae), and the remaining strategies collectively at 19%. The different growth habit categories showed variations in the CSR strategies. The trees clustered around a CS median strategy, with no R-selected trees observed. Shrubs and lianas centered around an S/CSR strategy, while grasses and understory shrubs clustered around CS/CSR. Redundancy analysis results indicate that leaf functional traits are primarily influenced by temperature, suggesting that temperature is the key environmental factor driving the differentiation of plant functional traits. This study provides insights into the ecological strategies of plant species in the Mt. Wuyi region, highlighting the importance of considering both biotic and abiotic factors in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem stability.

Understanding the biodiversity–productivity relationship (BPR) is crucial for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. While it is known that diversity enhances forest productivity, the underlying mechanisms at the local neighborhood level remain poorly understood. We established a 9.6 ha dynamic forest plot to study how neighborhood diversity, intraspecific competition, and interspecific competition influence tree growth across spatial scales using linear mixed-effects models. Our analysis reveals a significant positive correlation between neighborhood species richness (NSR) and relative growth rate (RGR). Notably, intraspecific competition, measured by conspecific neighborhood density and resource competition, negatively impacts RGR at finer scales, indicating intense competition among conspecifics for limited resources. In contrast, interspecific competition, measured by heterospecific density and resource competition, has a negligible impact on RGR. The relative importance of diversity and intra/interspecific competition in influencing tree growth varies with scale. At fine scales, intraspecific competition dominates negatively, while at larger scales, the positive effect of NSR on RGR increases, contributing to a positive BPR. These findings highlight the intricate interplay between local interactions and spatial scale in modulating tree growth, emphasizing the importance of considering biotic interactions and spatial variability in studying BPR.

Background: Tuberculosis continues to be a significant public health concern in China, particularly among the elderly population. This study aimed to assess the risk factors of tuberculosis among elderly individuals in China through a cohort study, focusing on this high-risk population. Methods: The population-based census was strategically designed to cover diverse regions and demographics across the city. The survey captured demographic and lifestyle information, as well as a clinical examination. Participants were prospectively followed up over a specified duration to monitor the incidence of tuberculosis cases. Results: After a follow-up period of more than 7 years, 246 individuals developed tuberculosis, resulting in an incidence rate of 92.21 per 100,000 person-years (95 % CI 81.2–104.3). Study questionIn infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is the sequential use of letrozole 2.5 mg/follicle stimulating hormone(FSH) more effective than letrozole 5 mg/FSH in stimulating ovulation and promoting pregnancy?Research design and methodsThe study was designed as a prospective, single-center, randomized, controlled pragmatic clinical trial. 220 infertile women between the ages of 20 and 40, who matched the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS and had no other identified reasons for infertility were enrolled from April 2023 to July 2023.The participants were randomly assigned to two groups in a 1:1 ratio. One group received 2.5 mg of letrozole on cycle days 3-7 with a sequential injection of 75 IU FSH on cycle days 8-10 (n = 110), while the other group received 5 mg of letrozole on cycle days 3-7 with a sequential injection of 75 IU FSH on cycle days 8-10 (n = 110). The duration of FSH treatment varied depending on the follicular development stage. Each participant underwent one to three treatment cycles until achieving pregnancy.The primary outcome was the cumulative pregnancy rate of all the participants. Secondary outcomes included characteristics and clinical pregnancy rates of all the intervention cycles.ResultsFor all 220 participants, the sequential letrozole 2.5 mg/FSH treatment group had a significantly higher cumulative pregnancy rate compared to the letrozole 5 mg/FSH treatment group (72.7% versus 59.1%, RR (95%CI) = 1.23 (1.02, 1.49), P-value = 0.033). For all 468 intervention cycles, letrozole 2.5 mg/FSH group had a significantly higher clinical pregnancy rate than the letrozole 5 mg/FSH group (36.2% versus 26.3%, P-value = 0.021), no statistically significant differences were observed in ovulation rates or adverse effects.ConclusionsThe data indicate that the sequential letrozole 2.5mg/FSH protocol may be more effective than the sequential letrozole 5mg/FSH protocol for promoting pregnancy in infertile women with PCOS.Clinical trial registrationwww.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2300069638.

Background: The relationship between leisure sedentary behavior (LSB) and periodontitis risk remains unclear in terms of causality and the potential mediating effects of intermediate factors. Materials and methods: Using the aggregate data of several large-scale genetic association studies from participants of European descent, we conducted a univariate, two-step, and multivariate Mendelian random (MR) analysis to infer the overall effect of LSB on periodontitis, and quantified the intermediary proportion of intermediary traits such as smoking. Results: Our findings indicated that per 1-SD increase (1.87 h) in leisure screen time (LST), there was a 23 % increase in the risk of periodontitis. [odds ratios (95 % CI) = 1.23 (1.04–1.44), p = 0.013]. Smoking was found to partially mediate the overall causal effect of LST on periodontitis, with a mediation rate of 20.7 % (95 % CI: 4.9%–35.5 %). Multivariate MR analysis demonstrated that the causal effect of LST on periodontitis was weakened when adjusting for smoking, resulting in an odds ratio of 1.19 (95 % CI: 1.01–1.39, p = 0.049) for each 1 standard deviation increase in exposure. Conclusion: The study provides evidence of a potential causal relationship between LSB characterized by LST and periodontitis, thereby further supporting the notion that reducing LSB is beneficial for health. Furthermore, it confirms the role of smoking as a mediator in this process, suggesting that inhibiting smoking behavior among individuals with long-term LSB may serve as a strategy to mitigate the risk of periodontitis.

AbstractBackground Unexplained recurrent spontaneous pregnancy loss (URPL) lacks effective treatment and reliable early diagnosis and prediction. Immunologic dysfunction can be an underlying cause of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). Considering the regulatory role of CD40–CD40L in immune responses, we explored its clinical significance in URPL.Methods The 108 women with URPL who were treated in Hebei Yanda Hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were selected as study subjects, and another 108 healthy women who were not pregnant and matched with the age and body mass index of the study group were selected as the control group. CD40 and CD4 + CD25 + Treg cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and CD40L in peripheral blood platelets were measured by flow cytometry. The predictive value of CD40–CD40L in URPL for the risk of RPL was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The correlations of CD40–CD40L with CD4 + CD25 + Treg cells and serum pro-inflammatory factors were assessed by Pearson’s analysis.Results CD40 on the surface of PBMCs and CD40L on the surface of platelets were up-regulated in URPL patients. CD40 in combination with CD40L had high predictive value for the risk of RPL in URPL patients. Peripheral blood CD40–CD40L was positively linked to IL-17 and IL-23, and negatively to CD4 + CD25 + Treg cells and IL-10 in URPL patients.Conclusions The CD40–CD40L pathway expression in peripheral blood can help predict the risk of RPL in URPL patients.

Steel slag composite grout (SSCG) was prepared by a large amount of steel slag (SS) to reinforce expressway photovoltaic (PV) slopes and reduce carbon emission. Laboratory tests were conducted to investigate SSCG properties, including flowability, effective water-solid ratio (W/S), stone rate, initial and final setting time, as well as flexural strength (FS), unconfined compressive strength (UCS), FS/UCS ratio and microstructure of SSCG stone body. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC, 42.5) and sulphoaluminate cement (SAC, 42.5) grouts were selected to make contrasts. Based on the performance results, the recommended SSCG composition for engineering application is 40 % SS + 25 % blast furnace slag (BFS) + 20 % silicate cement clinker (CC) + 10 % fly ash (FA) + 5 % flue gas desulfurisation gypsum (FGDG). and the recommended admixture is: 6 % AA + 2 % bentonite + 0.4 % FND-C. With the above SSCG and related grouting techniques for slope soils, the soil cohesion was increased by 7.3–12.2 % and the angle of internal friction was increased by 10.2–19.7 %. To further validate the beneficial effects of SSCG on slope stability and the safe application of PV systems, numerical modelling calculations were conducted based on the soil sample test results. The simulations demonstrated the positive effect of SSCG in enhancing slope stability and facilitating the secure installation of PV systems on expressway slopes. The successful operation of grid-connected PV systems provided compelling evidence for the technical applicability of SSCG and it contributed to the application feasibility of PV systems to expressway slopes.
