2022 was een bewogen jaar op de energiemarkt met gasprijzen die recordhoogtes bereikten. Wat betekende dit voor de Energysense-huishoudens? We kunnen het gasverbruik van 2022 vergelijken met de jaren ervoor en kijken hiervoor dus weer naar de huishoudens van wie we van al deze jaren data hebben.

This thesis investigates the development of early farming societies in Western Anatolia and Southeastern Europe between 7000 and 5000 BCE. This ‘Balkan-Anatolian zone’ is often approached as an intermediary between Neolithic ‘core areas’ in Southwest Asia, where crops and animals were first domesticated, and the Neolithization of Southeastern and Central Europe. New field research, however, indicates that the Balkan-Anatolian zone has a deep Neolithic history and its own internal complexity. Therefore, this thesis aims to re-direct attention to the diachronic multi-regional development of Neolithic ways of life in this area. I adopt a settlement perspective on Neolithization, and develop a methodology for reconstructing and comparing local and regional habitation histories (Part I). This methodology builds on the multi-scalar discussion of the diachronic development of houses (domestic architecture), settlement organization, and regional settlement patterns, and aims to address the intersection between habitation patterns and the character and practices of Neolithic communities. Following this methodological framework, I analyze habitation in five regional case studies (Part II, Ch. 5-9), followed by an inter-regional comparative investigation, contextualization and discussion (Part III, Ch. 10-11). I propose that the framework of availability – substitution – consolidation (Zvelebil 2009) provides a starting point for recognizing regional differences in the development of Neolithic settled landscapes. As an important addition to this framework, the archaeological record shows that regional processes of substitution and consolidation (6700/6000-5700 BCE) were followed by the collapse, or ‘bust’, of settled landscapes across the Balkan-Anatolian zone (5700-5500 BCE), and the partial renewal of habitation (5500-5000 BCE). This is in line with ideas proposed for the demographic development of early farming societies, e.g. by Shennan et al. (2013) and Bandy (2008). Following a combined framework of availability – substitution – consolidation – bust – recovery, differences between the study regions are found in the duration of these developmental stages, with longer periods of initial settlement found in Western Anatolia and the Aegean than in the Struma Valley. Furthermore, the total duration of the period between initial settlement and the ‘bust’ of regional settled landscapes decreased through time and space. I propose that during the westward dispersal of farming societies, shorter cycles of development and decline can be observed. An important insight is that the Neolithization of the Balkan-Anatolian zone is characterized by the long-term parallel development of regional populations, and that interactions between regional groups, rather than origins, played an important role in forming regional similarities. Indeed, a long-term perspective on Neolithization shows that networks provide a better framework for understanding the spread of farming than the idea of the progressive expansion of a way of life formed in restricted core areas. The contribution of the Balkan-Anatolian zone in the formation of the Neolithic is further emphasized by the differential spatio-temporal development of Neolithic communities in the Levant, Central Anatolia, and the Balkan-Anatolian zone. While diachronic fluctuations in the size of communities and settlement patterns can be found across this entire area, the maximum size of Neolithic communities decreased significantly between Southwest Asian PPNB mega-site and Balkan village. Given the expected pattern of demographic growth after initial Neolithic settlement, this suggests changes in the diachronic strategies of early farming societies, e.g. an increase in the rate of community fission, a decrease in intra-communal hierarchy, an increase in residential mobility, and an increase in the importance of inter-community networks. These developments may have given early farming societies in the Balkan-Anatolian zone an increasing flexibility and adaptability, and this may have contributed to the faster rate of dispersal of farming populations seen during the 7th and 6th millennia BCE.

Voor milieu- en klimaatbeleidsadvies maakt PBL gebruik van zogeheten reductie-opties om de (kosten-)effectiviteit van mogelijke beleidsmaatregelen inzichtelijk te maken. De kosteneffectiviteit van milieumaatregelen vormt bij veel beleidsmaatregelen een belangrijk hulpmiddel en wordt ook wel gebruikt als toets bij verlening van milieuvergunningen. In 2018/2019 heeft TNO, in opdracht van het PBL, een studie uitgevoerd naar emissie-effecten en kosten van mogelijke (beleids)maatregelen om emissies te reduceren van particuliere houtkachels en open haarden. Ook in 2010 en 2013 is door het toenmalige ECN Beleidsstudies de kosteneffectiviteit berekend van mogelijke reductie-opties ten aanzien van fijnstof uit particuliere houtkachels en open haarden. Er is een nieuwe raming ten aanzien van luchtemissies berekend in samenhang met de recent gepubliceerde Klimaat- en Energieverkenning 2019. Daarbij is gebruik gemaakt van een nieuwe CBS-inventarisatie van het houtverbruik door huishoudens. Deze nieuwe gegevens zijn de aanleiding om opnieuw de emissie-effecten en kosten van mogelijke (beleids)maatregelen voor particuliere houtkachels en open haarden uit te rekenen. Veel uitgangspunten in deze studie zijn hetzelfde gebleven in vergelijking met de eerdere studie van TNO. Zo is opnieuw de ‘Methodiek Milieukosten’ gehanteerd, uitgaande van een technische afschrijvingstermijn van 25 jaar en 3% rente.

In het kader van het project 10.000 duurzame huishoudens werd een slotbijeenkomst gehouden met de groep deelnemers van Valthe. Tijdens hun deelname werden metingen gedaan waarbij op deze bijeenkomst de resultaten werden gepresenteerd en besproken.

In Valthe werd een informatiesessie gehouden over duurzaamheid, het lectoraat Communication, Behaviour & The Sustainable Society en het project 10.000 Slimme huishoudens. De aanwezigen werden uitgenodigd om zich aan te sluiten bij het project.

Tijdens een bijeenkomst in Nieuw Laarhof werd het project 10.000 Slimme huishoudens gepresenteerd aan potentiele deelnemers.

In international climate and energy policy the development of smart grids features as a critical new step in the transition towards a sustainable energy future. Smart grids enable two-way energy and information exchange between households and energy providers. Drawing on social practice theories, transition theories and informational governance, this thesis seeks to shed light on the changes that are taking place at the level of households: How do householders understand, handle and use new information flows? How can we conceptualise the interplay between households and smart energy systems? And what does this mean for householder participation in smart energy transitions? The thesis suggests that the key to understanding and governing the social dynamics of smart grids lies in the ‘Home Energy Management-practices’ (HEM-practices) that are emerging at the interface between households and wider energy systems.

Kracht van de Buurt: Terugkoppeling resultaten van SES in Buurkrachtbuurt Zuides-West

Onderzoek naar de microbiologische kwaliteit van opgevangen regenwater dat bewaard werd in reservoirs toonde aan dat dit water altijd fecaal verontreinigd was en soms ziekteverwekkende micro-organismen zoals Campylobacter, Legionella, Cryptosporidium of Giardia bevatte. De mate van fecale verontreiniging van het water werd beinvloed door de hoeveelheid neerslag en de neerslagintensiteit. Als vervolg op een in 2005 uitgevoerd inventariserend onderzoek naar de microbiologische kwaliteit van opgevangen regenwater werd in 2006 het effect van omgevingsfactoren op de microbiologische kwaliteit van opgevangen regenwater onderzocht. Uit drie regenwaterreservoirs werden onder verschillende omstandigheden monsters genomen, zodat de mogelijke invloed van droogte, (hevige) neerslag, al dan niet na een periode van droogte, en temperatuur bestudeerd kon worden. De aanwezigheid van Campylobacter, Salmonella, Vibrio, Legionella, Cryptosporidium, Giardia en enterovirussen werd onderzocht. Bij een hoge neerslagintensiteit na een periode van droogte steeg het aantal fecale indicatorbacterien in het water in de reservoirs en werden ziekteverwekkende bacterien zoals Campylobacter gevonden. Door afspoeling van vogelfeces vanaf de daken kunnen hoge aantallen Campylobacter in de reservoirs terechtkomen, waardoor het denkbaar is dat bij gebruik van het opgevangen regenwater voor toiletspoeling niet aan het in het Waterleidingbesluit gestelde infectierisico van 1 per 10.000 personen per jaar wordt voldaan.

In this thesis, I use experimental and quasi-experimental data from 25 villages and a total of 1,105 farmers from eastern DRC to investigate the relationship among agricultural training, the adoption of agricultural technologies, crop productivity, and household food insecurity and dietary diversity. I present evidence that contributes to narrow the gap in the literature on the role of input subsidies fostering small-scale farmers' uptake of productivity-enhancing technologies, how farmer field school and farmer-to-farmer trainings affect the adoption of agricultural technologies, how F2F training may reduce the costs of FFS implementation, how adoption materializes on yields of food crops, and how training through the adoption of improved agricultural technologies impacts household food insecurity and the diet diversification of target households. As a complement to econometric evidence and in order to understand the main findings, I also discuss behavioral features and farmer driven initiatives which somehow condition these impacts. Throughout the four main chapters, I identify practical implications that are highly important for the design and implementation of new programs and policies aimed to address agricultural productivity issues and reduce household food insecurity. In Chapter 1 I develop a general introduction to the research which discusses the evolution of agricultural extension in the last few decades, and describe FFS and F2F training methodologies. Chapter 2 provides a detailed description of the project intervention, technologies promoted, research settings and the data collection process. In Chapter 3, I report the results of an experimental study that analyses the impact of one-shot input starter packs on the adoption of productivity-enhancing complementary practices, which have the potential to maximize the impact of starter pack inputs. Additionally, I assess the levels of persistence on farmers’ use of improved crop seeds which are included in the starter packs. Overall, I find no evidence of starter packs’ impact on small-scale farmers’ adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies. Similarly, the levels of persistence regarding the use of seeds following the delivery of starter packs were not significant. These results are consistent with studies that have found minimal or no persistence on the use of inputs following the provision of subsidies, including Duflo, Kremer et al. (2011). The limited impact that starter packs had on yields in the first year may logically explain that farmers refrained from using improved seeds subsequently because the inputs are not economically attractive. Chapter 4 studies the effectiveness of knowledge transmission from farmers trained in FFS through farmer-to-farmer training (F2F), which could potentially result in lower extension costs and higher impacts. I find that FFS training has a higher impact than F2F training in the first period, but the magnitude of the treatment effect in the second period is not statistically different between the two training methods. I argue that the dissemination of technologies promoted in FFS groups can well be formalized through farmer-to-farmer deliberate training attached to the FFS approach. Given the low costs of F2F training compared to FFS, the introduction of F2F training may substantially alleviate a major constraint to the large-scale introduction of FFS as a training method, its high costs. In Chapter 5, I study the impact of farmer’s participation in FFS and F2F training on small-scale agricultural productivity. A multi-crop yield-index and the yields of cassava were used as impact indicators. The results indicate that both FFS and F2F trainings contribute to a significant increase in farmers’ yields, especially in the second period when the magnitude of the effect substantially increased. We also learned that the effect size does not differ between the two training approaches in neither period, suggesting that F2F communications are a suitable alternative or complement to FFS training. While the chapter was unable to confirm if training materializes in higher yields through technology adoption, I argue that in the context of the sample the adoption of productivity-enhancing practices and inputs are likely the most important impact mechanism. I also study the relationship between agricultural training, the adoption of improved technologies and household food insecurity. I find that farmers’ participation in agricultural trainings has a positive effect, through the adoption of improved technologies, on improvements in household dietary diversity (HDDS). Nonetheless, the impact on household access to food (HFIAS) is less evident. These results suggest that FFS/F2F training can well reduce household food insecurity, which is mostly achieved through the adoption of improved agricultural technologies. Yet, there are farm and household specific factors which constrain how training impacts technology adoption and how adoption affect household food insecurity and diet diversification. In Chapter 7, I synthesize the results of the four main chapters and articulate the sequence of results from training to adoption to productivity to food security.

Separation of different domestic wastewater streams and targeted on-site treatment for resource recovery has been recognized as one of the most promising sanitation concepts to re-establish the balance in carbon, nutrient and water cycles. In this study a model was developed based on literature data to compare energy and water balance, nutrient recovery, chemical use, effluent quality and land area requirement in four different sanitation concepts: (1) centralized; (2) centralized with source-separation of urine; (3) source-separation of black water, kitchen refuse and grey water; and (4) source-separation of urine, feces, kitchen refuse and grey water. The highest primary energy consumption of 914 MJ/capita(cap)/year was attained within the centralized sanitation concept, and the lowest primary energy consumption of 437 MJ/cap/year was attained within source-separation of urine, feces, kitchen refuse and grey water. Grey water bio-flocculation and subsequent grey water sludge co-digestion decreased the primary energy consumption, but was not energetically favorable to couple with grey water effluent reuse. Source-separation of urine improved the energy balance, nutrient recovery and effluent quality, but required larger land area and higher chemical use in the centralized concept.
