Abstract

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is one of the biggest accretionary orogens in the world. With the development of laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS), large data of detrital zircon U–Pb and Hf isotopes have been published for decades, which leads to better understanding of the tectonic evolution and geodynamics of the CAOB. We compiled the data about the information of articles, samples and their analytical methods and results, then checked and corrected. These data are available to support future research activities in the CAOB, northern China, for example, the provenance analysis, climate changes and paleogeographic reconstruction. 9. Accretion of microcontinents and arcs in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt: insights from provenance analyses of early Paleozoic sedimentary records in Beishan.

Abstract

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt involves amalgamation of numerous magmatic arcs, accretionary complexes and continental fragments during long-lived subduction and accretion. However, the nature of key microcontinental terranes, as well as their continuity, remains unclear. This study conducted outcrop observation, heavy mineral assemblage, whole-rock geochemistry, detrital zircon U–Pb dating and Lu–Hf isotope analysis on sandstones in the Beishan orogenic belt. The findings from field observations, petrographic analysis and weathering indices show that the tectonic setting of the sandstone is a forearc sedimentary basin. The maximum depositional ages (MDAs) of sandstones are 503.8 ± 6.9 Ma and 431.9 ± 6.0 Ma. The provenance of the sandstone is complex, which probably originates from the Shuangyingshan and Hanshan blocks. By comparing the detrital zircon U–Pb ages with adjacent terranes such as Central Tianshan, Dunhuang and Tarim, it was observed that the Shuangyingshan block shares similar provenance with the Dunhuang terrane, while the Mazongshan–Hanshan shows affinity to the Central Tianshan terrane. This study highlights the complex nature of sediment provenance in the Beishan orogenic belt, influenced by tectonic processes involving thrusting, accretionary complexes and the presence of multiple terranes. 10. The changing role of urban design in China's urban development

Abstract

The overall objective of the research was to evaluate the performance of the Chinese planning system on design, urban design in particular, and to search for ways to integrate urban design thinking with existing urban planning agendas to improve design control in China. The reason for undertaking this research was due to the general perception that urban design did not play the role that it deserved in China. Despite an increasing number of initiatives, the question of how to address urban design issues in planning and development control remains a source of controversy. Focusing on the Chinese planning system, the research examined the approaches, the procedures, and the general effectiveness of design control in China. The research emphasised more at a local level by taking Guangzhou as a case study. It also evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the recent urban design initiatives, namely, the Urban Design Plans for specific districts and the Model Community Program. Moreover, the research has examined the British design experience and looked in more detail at the recent experience of Glasgow. The research revealed that the main defects were the incomprehensive design concerns in local policies and plans, the inability of current statutory plans to deal with design issues, the lack of appropriate design guidance, the poor understanding of the local character, and the lack of openness and co-ordination in the planning process. Recent urban design initiatives have generated interest but have achieved limited success due to the lack of strategic level thinking. The examination of the British design experience has offered some valuable lessons. These include the incorporation of urban design principles at all levels of planning, an emphasis on the quality of the public realm, careful and detailed analysis of the local context as the basis for the development of design policy and guidance, and an appreciation of the value of public participation and involvement. Combining this understanding of the inefficiencies of China's design control with the lessons drawn from the British experience, the thesis also makes a number of recommendations for improving China's planning and development control system.

27. [Manipulative reduction and plaster external fixation for the treatment of the scaphoid fracture and perilunate dislocation].

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and complications of manual reduction and external fixation for the treatment of scaphoid fractures and perilunate dislocations., Methods: From January 2009 to January 2013, 43 patients suffered from scaphoid fractures and perilunate dislocations were retrospective analyzed. Among them, 17 cases were treated with manipulative reduction and plaster external fixation as conservation group including 10 males and 7 females, the other 26 cases were treated with application of surgical as operation group including 15 males and 11 females. The clinical effects were assessed by Cooney function score, radiological analysis and observation of complications., Results: All patients were followed up for(45.00±8.72) months ranging from 36 to 60 months. At the final follow-up, the Cooney score of wrist function was 88.53±4.24 in conservation group and 89.58±4.59in operation group( t= 0.455, P >0.05). During the follow-up, 4 patients were found scaphoid avascular necrosis in the imaging performance in the conservation group(χ²=4.32, P <0.05). The difference of other complications between two groups was not statistically significant( P >0.05)., Conclusions: For patients suffered from the scaphoid fractures and perilunate dislocation, the early manipulative reduction and plaster external fixation after injury as soon as possible is necessary. Maintaining a satisfactory reduction and reliable fixation at the same time can lead to good treatment effect and there's no weakness compared to surgical treatment. But there was an increase in danger of complications.
