Abstract

The present study evaluated the antifungal activity of honey samples collected from different locations at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK, Pakistan). Disc diffusion method was used to test the antifungal potential of twenty-one (branded, unbranded, and natural comb) honey samples from the different botanical origins at different concentrations (undiluted, 10%, 30%, and 50%, w/v) against Candida albicans and Rhodotorula species. Branded, unbranded, and natural comb honey samples generate different inhibition zones (4-13 mm, 5-15 mm, and 8-17 mm) against Rhodotorula species. Candida albicans showed resistance for all tested honey samples. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Candida albicans and Rhodotorula species were 53.33%-88.12% and 1.76%-90.22% for branded, 61.3% - 93.8% and 9.90% - 95.5% for unbranded, and 67.1%-96.8% and 6.39%-98.8% for natural comb honey. In conclusion, natural comb honey from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may have antifungal therapeutic potential and could be a useful source for generating functional food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent years, the rapid increase in the demand for street floor information has drawn remarkable interest to the use of laser scanner data. It provides highly dense point cloud data with three dimensional (3D) position, intensity and range from the sensor to target. The street floor detection in urban areas is difficult task due to the complicated patterns and many contextual objects. In present study an automated method for detection of street floor using the Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) point cloud dataset has been proposed. Proposed method includes ground point filtering, rough street floor classification, edge detection and point in polygon test, in order to detect the street floor. Proposed method has been tested at a captured TLS point cloud. Completeness and correctness of the proposed method are 95.14% and 97.42% respectively. Abstract

Pole-shaped objects (PSOs) located along a road play key role in road safety and planning. Automation is required for calculating the numbers of trees need to be removed and utility poles need to be relocated during rural road widening. Road-side poles are among the most frequently struck road-side objects during road-side accidents. An automatic method is therefore proposed for detecting PSOs using LiDAR point cloud captured along the roadway using Mobile LiDAR system. The proposed method is tested on the point cloud data of rural road environment in India. Dataset of study area having text file size of 1.22 GB is processed in 13 minutes resulting in completeness of 88.63% and correctness of 95.12% in identifying PSOs within 10m of the road boundary. In data of across road coverage of 5m of the road boundary, the completeness of 93.10% and correctness of 100% are achieved. Poles attached with other objects, tilted poles and the poles occluded by tree branches and shrubs are detected by the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. Methylphenidate, Neuroleptics and Dyskinesia-Dystonia

Abstract

Methlyphenidate is one of two stimulant drugs used in the management of the Hyperkinetic Reaction in children. It has been known to have side effects such as dyskinesia, but this case details the emergence of dystonia and dyskinesia when the simultaneous use of methylphenidate and a phenothiazine was followed by withdrawal of the phenothiazine. It is postulated that the use of phenothiazine resulted in a post-synaptic supersensitivity which precipitated dystonia and dyskinesia when phenothiazine was withdrawn and methylphenidate reinstituted. It is also suggested that the phenothiazine dopamine-blocking action may necessitate the use of larger quantities of stimulant in order to produce the desired effect.

42. A Study of Young-Age and Mid-Life Homicidal Women Admitted to a Psychiatric Hospital for Pre-Trial Evaluation*

Abstract

The authors compared a group of young female homicidal offenders with a group of middle-aged homicidal women as to demographic data, psychopathology, physical disorders and type of victims chosen. Young women tend to have low socioeconomic status, have antisocial personality disorder, and I or schizophrenia as psychiatric diagnoses and most likely kill their children, while midlife women tend to have slightly higher socioeconomic status, suffer from affective disorder and alcoholism and have more frequent physical disorders and most likely murder their spouses. A significant finding noted among mid-life women is the high frequency of physical abuse by husbands who later become their homicide victims. Treatment implications of these findings are noted.
