1. Antioxidant effect of Abelmoschus Esculentus against acetaminophen-induced nephrotoxicity: an experimental study

Abstract

Acetaminophen(APAP) intoxication is an important cause of nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity. N-acetylcysteine(NAC) is used in the treatment, but it has some serious side effects. Abelmoschus esculentus(AE) has various benefits as well as antioxidant effects. This study aims to investigate the effect of AE in APAP-induced acute nephrotoxicity. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into five equal groups: Control, AE, APAP, APAP+AE, and APAP+AE+NAC. Significant changes were observed in serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin(NGAL) and Kidney Injury Molecule-1(KIM-1) after induction with APAP. NGAL and KIM-1 in the AE group remained low compared to those receiving APAP (p=0.022 and p0.001, respectively). When the APAP group was compared with the AE and AE+NAC groups, it was found that even the administration of AE alone significantly decreased NGAL and KIM-1(p=0.036 vs.p=0.029 and p0.001 vs. p0.001, respectively), these results were attributed to the effects of AE on reducing MDA and increasing SOD. Histopathological studies also confirmed these results. These results demonstrated that AE had protective and therapeutic effects on APAP-induced nephrotoxicity. This benefit of AE is due to its antioxidant effect. In addition, AE may also increase the regenerative capacity of the kidney, which APAP reduces.

Abstract

Objectives:The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for epilepsy development following febrile seizure (FS).Methods:This study included 449 patients undergoing first FS between 2014 and 2017. The sociodemographic, clinical, and electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics of the patients were retrieved from hospital records. Patients followed-up for at least 3 years after FS were divided into two groups (epilepsy and FS group; FS only group).Results:Of the 449 patients followed-up due to FS (238 [53.2%] boys and 211 [46.8%] girls), 42 (9.4%) were diagnosed with epilepsy during follow-up. The mean age at the time of the first FS was 21.4±14.5 months. A positive family history of FS and epilepsy was observed in 217 (48.3%) and 66 (14.7%) patients, respectively. In terms of FS characteristics, the prevalence of complex FS was significantly higher in the subsequent epilepsy group. Abstract

Aim: Acute kidney injury develops as a result of various etiologies and pathological mechanisms, with a high mortality rate. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Anatolian syrup on histopathological variables in experimentally induced acetaminophen and lipopolysaccharide associated acute kidney injury. Methods: In this study, 5 groups were formed using 40 male Wistar albino rats (200-220g, 2-4 months old), as follows: Sham, acetaminophen (1 g/kg intraperitoneal (ip)), 3) lipopolysaccharide (5 mg/kg ip), acetaminophen (1 g/kg ip) + Anatolian syrup (15 days orally), and lipopolysaccharide (5 mg/kg ip) + Anatolian syrup (15 days orally).Tubular atrophy, tubular dilatation, cytoplasmic vacuolization in tubular epithelial cells, tubular epithelial cell necrosis, interstitial inflammation, congestion, hemorrhage, glomerular damage and loss of brushy border were evaluated histopathologically semiquantitatively using scoring from 0 to 5.
