Abstract

No matter how creative and ambitious they may be, nonprofits that rely solely on donations and grants to finance their growth often fall short. One way to improve both funding and impact is to add a “more commercial” strategy to the mix—by charging recipients for what the organization would otherwise provide for free. Though that may sound uncharitable, the authors’ research shows that paying nominal fees can give beneficiaries a sense of ownership, boost their engagement, and empower them to demand results. Meanwhile, the revenue from the fees can go back into providing help to even more people. Several nonprofits, including Project Maji, which builds kiosks for clean drinking water in Africa; Gavi, which distributes vaccines; and Worldreader, which provides books to children in low-income countries, have found success with this approach. Using their examples, the authors describe how to set up an effective payment model. Among other things, nonprofits must assess how the needs of beneficiaries vary, educate them about offerings, and share accountability with them. Abstract

A new type of gold occurrence recently discovered in the Carlin trend, north-central Nevada, is clearly distinct from classic Carlin-type gold ore. These occurrences are interpreted to be of sedimentary exhalative (sedex) origin because they are stratiform and predate compaction and lithification of their unaltered Devonian host rocks. They contain barite that exhibits [[Delta].sup.34]S and [[Delta].sup.18]O values identical to sulfate in Late Devonian seawater and sedex-type barite deposits. Abrupt facies changes in the host rocks strongly suggest synsedimentary faulting and foundering of the carbonate shelf during mineralization, as is characteristic of sedex deposits. Gold occurs both as native inclusions in synsedimentary base-metal sulfides and barite, and as chemical enrichments in sulfide minerals. The absence of alteration and lack of [[Delta].sup.13]C and [[Delta].sup.18]O isotopic shift of primary carbonates in these rocks is strong evidence that this gold was not introduced with classic Carlin-type mineralization. Collectively, these features show that the Devonian strata were significantly enriched in gold some 300 m.y. prior to generation of the mid-Tertiary Carlin-type deposits. These strata may have been an important, perhaps even vital, source of gold for the latter. Although gold is typically low in most Zn-Pb-rich sedex deposits, our evidence suggests that transport of gold in basinal fluids, and its subsequent deposition in the sedex environment, can be significant.

Abstract

Several vital fluorescence assays were used in laser cytometric experiments to evaluate the health hazards posed by gossypol on animals and determine its potential medical application. Three established rodent cell lines were used in the study to characterize the physiological endpoints altered by gossypol acetic acid and analyze the mechanisms of gossypol-induced toxicity. Results indicate that fluorescence bioassays are very useful for establishing the cytotoxicity in cells caused by gossypol exposure.

Abstract

Black-white differences in the association between antihypertensive therapy, continuous measures of mean arterial and pulse pressures and left ventricular (LV) mass estimated from a multivariable electrocardiographic algorithm were examined in 6,020 men (23% black) and 7,970 women (29% black) participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Mean arterial and pulse pressures, weight, the percentage of subjects taking antihypertensive medication, and LV mass were higher in black than in white men (98 vs 89 mm Hg, 47 vs 46 mm Hg, 188 vs 187 pounds, 30% vs 17%, and 243 vs 217 g, respectively). Results of similar direction but greater magnitude were observed in black versus white women (mean arterial pressure, 94 vs 85 mm Hg; pulse pressure, 50 vs 47 mm Hg; weight, 180 vs 153 pounds; percent treated, 42% vs 18%; and LV mass, 203 vs 169 g, respectively). In multivariable regression analyses, blacks had higher levels of LV mass, and LV mass increased more sharply with increasing mean arterial pressure in blacks than in whites after adjusting for age, pulse pressure, and weight. M equal moon arterial and pulse pressures, age, and weight, treated blacks had higher LV mass than treated whites. These data indicate that blacks have higher LV mass than whites, and a more pronounced blood pressure-LV mass relation after controlling for other risk factors and treatment status. Given the prognostic importance of LV hypertrophy, intensified efforts to understand the ethnic differentials in LV mass may provide strategies to reduce excess cardiovascular mortality in African-Americans. Abstract Background Epidemiological and clinical studies frequently use echocardiography to measure LV wall thicknesses and chamber dimension for estimating quantitative measures of LV mass. While echocardiographic M-mode LV images have traditionally been measured using hand-held calipers and strip-chart paper tracings, digitized M-mode LV image measurements made directly on the computer screen using electronic calipers have become standard practice. We sought to determine if systematic differences in LV mass occur between the two methods by comparing LV mass measured from simultaneous M-mode strip chart recordings and digitized recordings. Methods The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study applied the latter method. To determine if systematic differences in LV mass occur between the two methods, LV mass was measured from simultaneous M-mode strip chart recordings and digitized recordings. Results We found no difference in LV mass (p > .25) and a strong correlation in LV mass between the two methods (r = 0.97). Neither age, sex, nor hypertension status affected the correlation of LV mass between the two methods. Conclusions We conclude that digital estimates of LV mass provide unbiased estimates comparable to the strip-chart method.

Abstract

Previous studies have reported a relationship between obesity and risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among several different minority populations. However, few studies have concentrated on the relationship between obesity and CVD in blacks. Several studies have reported that blacks who are obese have a greater chance of having high blood pressure, diabetes, and high blood levels of fat (triglycerides and cholesterol) than blacks who are not obese. All of these conditions increase the risk of developing CVD. To investigate the relationship between obesity and heart disease in blacks, data obtained from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) and Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) studies were evaluated. The CARDIA study (1985-1986) included 5,115 black and white adults between the ages of 18 and 30. The ARIC study (1986-1990) included 15,803 black and white adults aged 45 to 64. In both studies, body weight, height, waist size, blood pressure, and blood levels of sugar (glucose) and cholesterol were measured. A person was classified as having CVD if there was a history of myocardial infarction (heart attack), angina (chest pain) or intermittent claudication (pain in the legs caused by insufficient blood flow to the leg muscles). Obesity and weight gain were more common among black women than white women and among black men than white men. Obesity in blacks was associated with higher than normal blood pressure and higher blood levels of sugar and cholesterol. Diabetes was more common among blacks who were obese than among those who were thin. For blacks between the ages of 45 and 65, CVD was associated with obesity. The prevalence of CVD was higher among those with the most abdominal fat. It is concluded that obesity is common in the US, and is strongly associated with risk factors for developing CVD; excess body fat should be avoided. A novel product, Surgicel® Powder – Absorbable Hemostatic Powder (SP), made from oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) fabric, has been developed for adjunctive use in surgical procedures to assist in control of oozing bleeding over broad areas and where access could be difficult with a fabric ORC product. This study compares the new SP to other commercially available hemostatic powder products in two in vivo models.Methods: Hemostatic efficacy of SP was compared to two polysaccharide-based hemostats in a porcine liver punch biopsy model and to three polysaccharide-based hemostats and one non-regenerated oxidized cellulose hemostat in a porcine liver abrasion model. Primary outcomes measured were hemostatic efficacy, defined as hemostasis within 10 minutes of application, and time-to-hemostasis (TTH).Results: In the punch biopsy model, SP displayed significantly higher effective hemostasis rates than one of the polysaccharide hemostats (p=0.047) and faster TTH than both (p<0.001). In the liver abrasion model, SP had significantly higher effective hemostasis rates (p≤0.002) and faster TTH (p<0.001) than the other four hemostatic agents. The amount of powder applied within the ranges used did not appear to affect hemostatic efficacy.Conclusion: In both the liver punch biopsy model of mild to moderate bleeding and the liver abrasion model of mild but diffuse oozing, SP provided more effective hemostasis and faster TTH than other marketed hemostatic powders.
