We have studied the performance of finger-like LSO:Ce (LSO) crystals coupled one by one to pixels of avalanche photodiode detector (APD) arrays during their operation in coincidence at [sup.12]C ion beams of parameters being typical for tumor irradiations. In a first step of these experiments the parameters of the detectors and the signal processing setup have been characterized off-beam, i.e., by means of [[beta].sup.+] radioactive sources ([sup.22]Na, [sup.68]Ge). Afterwards, the apparatus was installed at the medical beam line of the heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) of the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) at Darmstadt, Germany. Here the [[beta].sup.+] activity produced by nuclear fragmentation reactions of [sup.12]C 200.3 AMeV heavy ion beams with polymerized methyl methacrylate phantoms were measured. Furthermore, a [sup.68]Ge source was included into the in-beam experiment, in order to check the stability of the setup and to compare energy and time resolution before, during, and after the phantom irradiations. Additionally, it could be demonstrated by means of high resolution [gamma]-ray spectroscopy that LSO is not activated by the light projectile fragments escaping the patients downbeam during therapeutic irradiations The experimental results indicate that LSO scintillator is a suitable material for in-beam positron emission tomography (PET) and, furthermore, the LSO/APD array is a feasible detector concept for in-beam monitoring of the dose application by means of PET.

HADES is a versatile magnetic spectrometer aimed at studying dielectron production in pion, proton and heavy-ion-induced collisions. Its main features include a ring imaging gas Cherenkov detector for electron-hadron discrimination, a tracking system consisting of a set of 6 superconducting coils producing a toroidal field and drift chambers and a multiplicity and electron trigger array for additional electron-hadron discrimination and event characterization. A two-stage trigger system enhances events containing electrons. The physics program is focused on the investigation of hadron properties in nuclei and in the hot and dense hadronic matter. The detector system is characterized by an 85% azimuthal coverage over a polar angle interval from 18° to 85°, a single electron efficiency of 50% and a vector meson mass resolution of 2.5%. Identification of pions, kaons and protons is achieved combining time-of-flight and energy loss measurements over a large momentum range (0.1 < p < 1.0 GeV/c). The High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at the heavy ion synchrotron SIS of GSI, Darmstadt, is a high-resolution second generation detector system for lepton pair spectroscopy. Its low-mass tracking system consists of two pairs of planes of trapezoidally shaped Multiwire Drift Chambers (MDC), installed on either side of a superconducting toroidal magnet. This paper summarizes some experiences with the construction and the in-beam operation of the six large-area chambers produced by Forschungszentrum Rossendorf. Studies on creeping of aluminum wires over a period of three years are presented. In addition, the observation of growth of filaments with various shapes and sizes in one of the chambers used in-beam will be discussed in detail.

For experiments at the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE, where neutrons in the kinetic energy region from some tens of keV to a few MeV will be produced by bremsstrahlung, neutron-time-of-flight detectors have been developed. These detectors are made from the plastic scintillator material EJ-200. Efficiency calibration showed more than 10% efficiency for kinetic energies down to 30 keV. The calibration was done at the accelerator facility for fast neutron research at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, using pulsed quasi-monoenergetic neutron fields with a well-determined fluence. The low detection threshold was obtained by coincident readout of two Hamamatsu R2059-01 photomultiplier tubes per scintillator and by triggering just below the single-photo-electron peak of these photomultiplier tubes, which additionally gives a well-reproduceable detection threshold.

- Abstract
We have studied the performance of finger like LSO:Ce (LSO) crystals coupled one by one to pixels of avalanche photodiode detector (APD) arrays during their operation in coincidence at 12C ion beams of parameters being typical for tumor irradiations. In a first step of these experiments the parameters of the detectors and the signal processing setup has been characterized off-beam, i.e. by means of beta+ radioactive sources (22Na, 68Ge). Afterwards, the apparatus was installed at the medical beam line of the heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) of the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) at Darmstadt, Germany. Here, the beta+ activity produced by nuclear fragmentation reactions of 12C 200.3 AMeV heavy ion beams with polymerized methyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantoms were measured. Furthermore, a 68Ge source was included into the in-beam experiment, in order to check the stability of the setup and to compare energy and time resolution before, during and after phantom irradiations. Additionally, it could be demonstrated by means of high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy that LSO is not activated by the light projectile fragments escaping the patients downbeam during therapeutic irradiations. The experimental results indicate, that LSO scintillator is a suitable material for in-beam PET and, furthermore, the LSO/APD array is a feasible detector concept for in-beam monitoring of the dose application by means of PET.

Double-differential emission probabilities P (E, ?) in angle ? and energy E of protons, tritons, and a-particles were measured in the case of spontaneous fission of
252 Cf. A detector system consisting of position-sensitive parallel-plate avalanche counters (PPAC) and ?E-E-telescopes allowed a coincidence measurement of fission fragments (FF) and light charged particles (LCP) in the whole region from 0 deg. to 180 deg. with respect to the light-fragment direction. Previous results for a-particle emission were confirmed. The background contributions for protons are discussed in detail. For proton emission the background arising from (n, p)-reactions was measured and compared with a corresponding Monte-Carlo simulation of elastic (n, p)-clusions. Unlike for tritons and a-particles the P (E, ?) distribution for protons does not show equatorial peaking in 0 between 80 deg. and 90 deg. and contradicts classical scission point emission. The proton distribution, however, agrees with fragment de-excitation calculations in the framework of the cascade evaporation model (CEM) whereas an analogous calculation fora-particles completely fails. Upper limits for an additional scission component of proton emission are given.- Published
