We describe a new treefrog species from Lao Cai Province, northwestern Vietnam. The new species is assigned to the genus Zhangixalus based on a combination of the following morphological characters: (1) dorsum green, smooth; body size medium (SVL 30.1–32.2 in males); (2) fingers webbed; tips of digits expanded into large disks, bearing circum-marginal grooves; (3) absence of dermal folds along limbs; (4) absence of supracloacal fold and tarsal projection. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by: (1) dorsal surface of the head and body green without spots; (2) axilla and groin cream with a black blotch; (3) ventral cream without spot; (4) chin creamy with grey marbling; anterior part of the thigh and ventral surface of tibia orange without spots; posterior parts of thigh orange with a large black blotch; (5) ventral side of webbing orange with some grey pattern (6) iris red-bronze, pupils black; (7) finger webbing formula I1¼-1¼II1-2III1-1IV, toe webbing formula I½-½II0-1½III¼-1¾IV1¾-½V. Phylogenetically, the new species is nested in the same subclade as Z. jodiae, Z. pinglongensis, and Z. yaoshanensis, with genetic distances ranging from 3.23% to 4.68%. The new species can be found in evergreen montane tropical forests at an elevation of about 1,883 m a.s.l. This new discovery brings the number of known genus Zhangixalus species to 42 and the number of species reported from Vietnam to 10.

Talaromyces sp. DC2 is an endophytic fungus that was isolated from the stem of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don in Hanoi, Vietnam and is capable of producing vinca alkaloids. This study utilizes the PacBio Sequel technology to completely sequence the whole genome of Talaromyces sp. DC2The genome study revealed that DC2 contains a total of 34.58 Mb spanned by 156 contigs, with a GC content of 46.5%. The identification and prediction of functional protein-coding genes, tRNA, and rRNA were comprehensively predicted and highly annotated using various BLAST databases, including non-redundant (Nr) protein sequence, Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), and Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes (CAZy) databases. The genome of DC2 has a total of 149, 227, 65, 153, 53, and 6 genes responsible for cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, chitin, starch, and inulin degradation, respectively. The Antibiotics and Secondary Metabolites Analysis Shell (AntiSMASH) analyses revealed that strain DC2 possesses 20 biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for producing secondary metabolites. The strain DC2 has also been found to harbor the DDC gene encoding aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase enzyme. Conclusively, this study has provided a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in secondary metabolites and the ability of the Talaromyces sp. DC2 strain to degrade plant cell walls.

Rice is the second-most important primary crop in the world and one of the most susceptible crops to salt stress. Soil salinization hinders seedling growth and decreases crop yield by inducing ionic and osmotic imbalances, photosynthesis disturbances, cell wall alterations, and gene expression inhibition. Plants have developed a range of defense mechanisms to adapt to salt stress. One of the most effective means is to make use of plant microRNAs (miRNAs) as post-transcriptional regulators to regulate the expression of developmental genes in order to mitigate the detrimental effects of salt stress. In this study, the miRNA sequencing data between two contrasting rice cultivars, salt-tolerant Doc Phung (DP) and salt-sensitive IR28 seedlings, were compared under control and salt stress (150 mM NaCl) conditions to determine the salt stress-responsive miRNAs. Comparative analysis of miRNA sequencing data detected a total of 69 differentially expressed miRNAs in response to salt stress treatment. Among them, 18 miRNAs from 13 gene families, MIR156, MIR164, MIR167, MIR168, MIR171, MIR396, MIR398, MIR1432, MIR1846, MIR1857, MIR1861, MIR3979, and MIR5508, were identified to be specifically and significantly expressed in the shoot and root tissues of DP seedlings. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses further revealed that these detected miRNAs regulate a range of essential biological and stress response processes, including gene transcription, osmotic homeostasis, root formation, ROS scavenger synthesis, and auxin and abscisic acid signaling pathways. Our findings provide more insight into the miRNA-mediated responsive mechanisms of rice under salt stress and should benefit the improvement of salt stress tolerance in rice.

Well-posedness and exponential stability of nonlocal time-delayed of a wave equation with a integral conditions of the 1st kind forms the center of this work. Through semigroup theory we prove the well-posedness by the Hille-Yosida theorem and the exponential stability exploring the dissipative properties of the linear operator associated to damped model using the Gearhart-Huang-Pruss theorem.

We consider vibrations modeled by the standard linear solid model of viscoelasticity with boundary dissipation. We establish the well-posedness and the exponential stability.

This article concerns the behaviour of solutions to a coupled system of Schrodinger equations that has applications in many physical problems, especially in nonlinear optics. In particular, when the solution exists globally, we obtain the growth of the solutions in the energy space. Finally, some conditions are also obtained for having blow-up in this space.

Biotechnological applications of cytochromes P450 show difficulties, such as low activity, thermal and/or solvent instability, narrow substrate specificity and redox partner dependence. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, an exploitation of novel thermophilic P450 enzymes from nature via uncultured approaches is desirable due to their great advantages that can resolve nearly all mentioned impediments. From the metagenomics library of the Binh Chau hot spring, an open reading frame (ORF) encoding a thermostable cytochrome P450—designated as P450-T3—which shared 66.6% amino acid sequence identity with CYP109C2 of Sorangium cellulosum So ce56 was selected for further identification and characterization. The ORF was synthesized artificially and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli C43(DE3) using the pET17b system. The purified enzyme had a molecular weight of approximately 43 kDa. The melting temperature of the purified enzyme was 76.2 °C and its apparent half-life at 60 °C was 38.7 min. Redox partner screening revealed that P450-T3 was reduced well by the mammalian AdR-Adx4-108 and the yeast Arh1-Etp1 redox partners. Lauric acid, palmitic acid, embelin, retinoic acid (all-trans) and retinoic acid (13-cis) demonstrated binding to P450-T3. Interestingly, P450-T3 also bound and converted testosterone. Overall, P450-T3 might become a good candidate for biocatalytic applications on a larger scale.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of heterogeneous clinical and genetic disorders. Two siblings presented with characteristics like muscular dystrophy, abnormal white matter, and elevated serum creatine kinase level. The high throughput of whole exome sequencing (WES) makes it an efficient tool for obtaining a precise diagnosis without the need for immunohistochemistry. WES was performed in the two siblings and their parents, followed by prioritization of variants and validation by Sanger sequencing. Very rare variants with moderate to high predicted impact in genes associated with neuromuscular disorders were selected. We identified two pathogenic missense variants, c.778C>T (p.H260Y) and c.2987G>A (p.C996Y), in the LAMA2 gene (NM_000426.3), in the homozygous state in two siblings, and in the heterozygous state in their unaffected parents, which were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Variant c.2987G>A has not been reported previously. These variants may lead to a change in the structure and function of laminin-α2, a member of the family of laminin-211, which is an extracellular matrix protein that functions to stabilize the basement membrane of muscle fibers during contractions. Overall, WES enabled an accurate diagnosis of both patients with LAMA2-related muscular dystrophy and expanded the spectrum of missense variants in LAMA2.

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) is a rare congenital genetic disease causing abnormal unique facial phenotypes, several defects in organs and body parts, and mental disorder or intellectual disorder traits. Main causes of CdLS have been reported as variants in cohesin complex genes, in which mutations in the NIPBL gene have been estimated to account for up to 80%. Our study included three Vietnamese patients with typical CdLS phenotypes. Whole exome sequencing revealed two known heterozygous mutations c.6697G>A (p.Val2233Met) and c.2602C>T (p.Arg868X), and a novel heterozygous mutation c.4504delG (p.Val1502fsX87) in the NIPBL gene of the three patients. In silico analyses of the identified mutations predicted possible damaging and truncating effects on the NIPBL protein. Inherited analyses in the patients’ families showed that all of the mutations are de novo. Our results lead a definitive diagnosis of patients with CdLS and expand the spectrum of mutations in the NIPBL gene. These findings also confirm whole exome sequencing is an efficient tool for genetic screening of CdLS.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that affect prime naive T cells and create proper immune responses. The uncontrolled growth of cancer cells often results from the cell’s successful inhibition of cytotoxic T lymphocytes. In addition to conventional cancer treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, immunotherapies have been seen to offer promising and innovative cancer treatments. Currently, DC therapy is one of the most popular immunotherapies because it uses tumour antigen-pulsed DC vaccines to fight against cancers. Patients with end-stage cancers treated with DC therapy may extend survival significantly for up to 10 to 15 more years. Researchers worldwide, including in Vietnam, have been focusing on determining the etiology of cancers with an aim to control cancers. One of the major causes of cancer is an increased expressions of proteins, including cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA4) and programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) which both affect the recruitment of a large number of regulatory T cells and abolishes the presence of cytotoxic T lymphocytes migrating to the tumor sites, and resulting in an immune tolerance. In addition to this, the abnormal activation of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is also an important risk factor for cancer, because its activation leads to transcription of nuclear genes involved in regulating the cell physiological processes, such as maturation, differentiation, proliferation, migration, and invasion. This NF-κB signal is modulated by bonds among most receptors on immune cell surfaces and their specific ligands. Therefore, investigations of the precise molecular mechanism associated with the regulation of cancer development by DCs and other leukocytes, and the efficiency of cancer therapies have been major challenges for scientists worldwide.

Congenital nephrotic syndrome, a rare and severe disease, is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The disease manifests shortly after birth and occurs predominantly in families of Finnish origin but has now been observed in all countries and races. Mutations in the NPHS1 gene, which encodes nephrin, are the main causes of congenital nephrotic syndrome in patients. In this study, we report the first mutational analysis of the NPHS1 gene in three unrelated children from three different Vietnamese families. These patients were examined and determined to be suffering from congenital nephrotic syndrome in the Department of Pediatrics, Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics. All 29 exons and exon-intron boundaries of NPHS1 were analyzed by PCR and DNA sequencing. Genetic analysis of the NPHS1 gene revealed one compound heterozygous variant p.Glu117Lys, one heterozygous missense mutation p.Asp310Asn, and one heterozygous frame-shifting mutation (c.3250_3251insG causing p.Val1084Glyfs⁎12) in patient 1. In patient 2, one heterozygous variant p.Glu117Lys and one novel heterozygous missense mutation p.Ser324Ala were identified. Finally, a novel missense mutation p.Arg802Leu and a novel nonsense mutation (c.2442C>G causing p.K792⁎) were identified in patient 3.

The power amplifier (PA) and low-noise amplifier (LNA) are the most critical components of transceiver systems including radar, mobile communications, satellite communications, etc. While the PA is the key component of the transmitter (TX), the LNA is the key component of the receiver (RX) of the transceiver system. It is pointed out that traditional design approaches for both the LNA and PA face challenging drawbacks. When designing an LNA, the power gain and noise figure of the LNA are difficult to improve simultaneously. For PA design, it indicates that efficiency and linearity of the PA are also hard to improve simultaneously. This study aims to surmount this by proposing a novel independently biased 3-stack GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) configuration for efficient design of both PA and LNA for next generation wireless communication systems. By employing an independently biased technique, the proposed configuration can offer superior performance at both small-signal (SS) for LNA design and large-signal (LS) for PA design compared with other typical circuit configurations. Simulation results show that by utilizing an adaptive bias control of each transistor of the proposed configuration, both power gain and noise figure can be improved simultaneously for the LNA design. Moreover, efficiency and linearity can be also improved at the same time for the PA design. Compared results with other typical configurations including a single-stage, conventional cascode, independently biased cascode, and conventional 3-stack reveals that the proposed configuration exhibits superior advantages at both SS and LS operation.

Multi-layer reinforced concrete slabs with thermal insulation materials are widely used in practice all over the world. In Vietnam, in order to apply modern construction of multi-layer structures with an inner layer of low thermal conductivity concrete into practice, it is necessary to conduct numerical researches on the peculiarities of the country climatic conditions country. In this paper, the authors analyze the heat transfer in multilayer reinforced concrete slabs’ roof under the climatic conditions of Hanoi (Vietnam) using finite element method with computer simulation. The object of the study is the insulating capacity of multilayer reinforced concrete roofs under the influence of changes in the temperature of the outer surface of the structure of the buildings’ roof. The research methods are based on the numerical simulation of heat transfer from the outer to the inner surface of the building roof. From the results obtained, compared to the traditional design solution, multilayer reinforced concrete slab appears to have more advantages, and these advantages are available with the use of heat-insulating material made of polystyrene concrete. These scientific researches enable to choose the rational roof design in Vietnam, which satisfies the demand to reduce influence of temperature.

The development of methods for the calculating reinforced concrete structures covers a wide range of issues, including the expansion of the application of new innovative materials such as concrete and reinforcement. For usage in the practice of modern construction of multilayer structures made of concrete with different physic-mechanical characteristics, it is compulsory to conduct numerical studies of the stress-strain state of these structures under different types of loading. This article presents an analysis of the influence of the relations between the initial elastic modulus of the outer and middle layers for the stress-strain state and the deflection of three-layer reinforced concrete structures using the finite element method in the program ANSYS Mechanical. Numerical modeling allows comparing the obtained results and building theoretical dependences in a wide range of specified parameters for the construction of sections of multilayer reinforced concrete elements. The obtained scientific results enable to determine rational parameters for modeling various structural solutions of multilayer reinforced concrete structures. This would limit the number of actual test samples, increasing the efficiency of the experiment.

Launaea sarmentosa, also known as Sa Sam Nam, is a widely used remedy in Vietnamese traditional medicine and cuisine. However, the chemical composition and bioactivity of its essential oil have not been elucidated yet. In this study, we identified 40 compounds (98.6% of total peak area) in the essential oil via GC-MS analysis at the first time. Among them, five main compounds including Thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether (52.4%), (E)-α-Atlantone (9.0%), Neryl isovalerate (6.6%), Davanol D2 (isomer 2) (3.9%), and trans-Sesquisabinene hydrate (3.9%) have accounted for 75.8% of total peak area. The anti-bacterial activity of the essential oil against 4 microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has also investigated via agar well diffusion assay. The results showed that the essential oil exhibited a strong antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis with the inhibition zones ranging from 8.2 to 18.7 mm. To elucidate the anti-bacterial effect mechanism of the essential oil, docking study of five main compounds of the essential oil (Thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether, (E)-α-Atlantone, Neryl isovalerate, Davanol D2 (isomer 2), and trans-Sesquisabinene hydrate) against some key proteins for bacterial growth such as DNA gyrase B, penicillin binding protein 2A, tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase, and dihydrofolate reductase were performed. The results showed that the main constituents of essential oil were highly bound with penicillin binding protein 2A with the free energies ranging –27.7 to –44.8 kcal/mol, which suggests the relationship between the antibacterial effect of essential oil and the affinity of main compounds with penicillin binding protein. In addition, the free energies of main compounds of the essential oil with human cyclooxygenase 1, cyclooxygenase 2, and phospholipase A2, the crucial proteins related with inflammatory response were less than diclofenac, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug. These findings propose the essential oil as a novel and promising anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory medicine or cosmetic products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four new glycosides, named amplexicosides A-D (1–4), and five known compounds: benzyl 2-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy]-benzoate (5), benzyl 2-neohesperidosyloxy-6-hydroxybenzoate (6), chrysandroside A (7), chrysandroside B (8) and camelliquercetiside C (9) were isolated from the branches and leaves of Camellia amplexicaulis (Pit.) Cohen-Stuart. Their structures were elucidated using HR-ESI-MS and 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra and compared to reported NMR data. All of the isolated compounds were screened in an α-glucosidase assay. Compounds 4, 8, and 9 significantly inhibited α-glucosidase with respective IC50 values of 254.9 ± 4.2, 304.8 ± 11.9 and 228.1 ± 16.4 μM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
