Background/Objectives: We aimed to investigate the influence of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body composition on arterial stiffness. Methods: Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and aortic systolic (ASBP) and diastolic (ADBP) blood pressure were compared between upper and lower tertiles of oxygen consumption at the aerobic threshold (VO2AerT), peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), percentage of fat mass (FM%), and body mass index (BMI) in sixty adolescents (30 males and 30 females, 14.9 ± 2.1 years old). A stepwise multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the independent associations between VO2AerT and VO2peak and cfPWV, and between BMI and FM% and cfPWV with adjustments for age, sex, ASBP, and ADBP. Results: cfPWV and ADBP were lower in the second and third VO2AerT tertiles compared to the first tertile (cfPWV, 4.7 ± 0.5 and 4.7 ± 0.5 vs. 5.3 ± 0.8 m/s, p < 0.01; ADBP, 62 ± 7 and 62 ± 7 vs. 70 ± 8 mmHg, p < 0.01). ASBP was lower in the third VO2AerT tertile compared to the first tertile (94 ± 7 vs. 101 ± 12 mmHg, p = 0.05). ADBP was lower in the second VO2peak tertile compared to the first tertile (62 ± 7 vs. 68 ± 9 mmHg, p = 0.03). ASBP was lower in the first and second BMI tertiles compared to the third tertile (95 ± 8 and 95 ± 7 vs. 102 ± 11 mmHg, p = 0.02). The eight-variable model significantly contributed to the variance of cfPWV (F(8, 51) = 7.450, p < 0.01), accounting for 47% of the variance. Individually, age (p < 0.05) and ADBP (p < 0.01) significantly predicted cfPWV. Conclusions: Submaximal indicators of CRF such as VO2AerT should be considered as a part of the risk stratification of cardiovascular disease in healthy adolescents.

Graphs are used widely to model complex systems, and detecting anomalies in a graph is an important task in the analysis of complex systems. Graph anomalies are patterns in a graph that do not conform to normal patterns expected of the attributes and/or structures of the graph. In recent years, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been studied extensively and have successfully performed difficult machine learning tasks in node classification, link prediction, and graph classification thanks to the highly expressive capability via message passing in effectively learning graph representations. To solve the graph anomaly detection problem, GNN-based methods leverage information about the graph attributes (or features) and/or structures to learn to score anomalies appropriately. In this survey, we review the recent advances made in detecting graph anomalies using GNN models. Specifically, we summarize GNN-based methods according to the graph type (i.e., static and dynamic), the anomaly type (i.e., node, edge, subgraph, and whole graph), and the network architecture (e.g., graph autoencoder, graph convolutional network). To the best of our knowledge, this survey is the first comprehensive review of graph anomaly detection methods based on GNNs.

This study aims to explore a feasible form of a haptic device for common users. We propose HAPmini, a novel graspable haptic device that enhances the user's touch interaction. To achieve this enhancement, the HAPmini is designed with low mechanical complexity, few actuators, and a simple structure, while still providing force and tactile feedback to users. Despite having a single solenoid-magnet actuator and a simple structure, the HAPmini can provide haptic feedback corresponding to a user's 2-dimensional touch interaction. Based on the force and tactile feedback, the hardware magnetic snap function and virtual texture were developed. The hardware magnetic snap function helped users perform pointing tasks by applying an external force to their fingers to enhance their touch interaction performance. The virtual texture simulated the surface texture of a specific material through vibration and delivered a haptic sensation to users. In this study, five virtual textures (i.e., reproductions of the textures of paper, jean, wood, sandpaper, and cardboard) were designed for HAPmini. Both HAPmini functions were tested in three experiments. First, a comparative experiment was conducted, and it was confirmed that the hardware magnetic snap function could increase the performance of pointing tasks to the same extent as the software magnetic snap function could, which is commonly used in graphical tools. Second, ABX and matching tests were conducted to determine whether HAPmini could generate the five virtual textures, which were designed differently and sufficiently well for the participants to be distinguished from each other. The correctness rates of the ABX and the matching tests were 97.3% and 93.3%, respectively. The results confirmed that the participants could distinguish the virtual textures generated using HAPmini. The experiments indicate that HAPmini enhances the usability of touch interaction (hardware magnetic snap function) and also provides additional texture information that was previously unavailable on the touchscreen (virtual texture).

Intracellular transport: a new SPIN A key protein required for incorporating substances into cells has been identified by researchers in South Korea. During this process, called endocytosis, materials are engulfed by the cell membrane, then packaged into vesicles by organelles called endosomes for transport around the cell. The small enzyme Rab5 is involved in fusing and transporting vesicles through interactions with a protein called Gapex5. It has been unclear how these interactions occur, but Woo Keun Song and Yun Hyun Huh at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and co-workers suspected a role for SPIN90, an ‘adapter protein’ that helps connect other molecules. They found that Rab5 and Gapex5 did not come close in mutant cells lacking SPIN90. In normal cells, SPIN90 interacted strongly with both Rab5 and Gapex5, recruiting them to endosomes where they operated together on vesicle formation.

A Bankart lesion is a common traumatic sports injury of the glenohumeral joint. When the shoulder is dislocated, the connective tissue surrounding the joint may tear or rupture. This study aimed to describe the initial dislocation, treatment, medical treatment, rehabilitation outcomes at 3 and 8 months, and return to daily life for three patients. Patient 1 was a 28-year-old male office worker who enjoyed fitness and weight training. His injury was sustained by a fall from his bicycle and subsequent performance of pull-up exercises. Surgery was recommended for repair of the anterior and inferior labrum tear. Reassessment of the surgery was performed after 2 months of rehabilitation. The patient was asked to exercise once a week at a rehabilitation center and to perform home-based exercises. In the first 2 months, the main exercise consisted of range of motion (ROM) exercises and stretching. Thereafter, muscle strengthening, using tubing, equipment and body weight exercises, and proprioceptive exercises were performed to gradually improve muscle strength and for return to daily activities. ROM progressively increased, with recovery of normal range at 2 months post-surgery. However, pain decreased only slightly, with a visual analog score of 6 out of 10 at 2 months post-surgery. At 8 months, the pain was bearable, without causing discomfort. Muscle strength remained almost unchanged initially but gradually recovered, although with a residual deficit of 20–30% in flexion, adduction and internal rotation. Considering the prolonged rehabilitation after surgery, future studies are warranted to analyze the long-term effects of non-surgical therapies by accumulating more cases and developing effective exercise rehabilitation programs.

Abstract Background Almost half of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients progress to dementia, which is associated with decreased quality of life and obstacles to independent living. Relevant management is expected to prevent MCI patients from progressing to dementia. In recent years, electroacupuncture (EA) has been used to treat various kinds of neurological disorders including MCI. This study evaluates the use of EA for MCI patients to increase cognitive function through a comparison with Western medications. Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCT) or systematical reviews (SR) of EA versus Western medications for MCI were searched using the following 10 databases: Pubmed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), National Digital Science Library (NDSL), Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry (JON), Korean Medical Database (KMBASE), KoreaMed, and OASIS, from October 2007 to August 2017, without language restriction. A methodological quality assessment of RCTs or SRs that met inclusion criteria was conducted using Cochrane Risk of bias (RoB) tool and a meta-analysis by RevMan (Review Manager) 5.3.5 version of Cochrane collaboration. Results Five RCTs with 257 patients met inclusion criteria and those were randomly divided into two groups: the EA group (n = 103) and Western medications group (n = 154). The methodological quality of the included studies showed high risk or/and unclear of risk of bias. The meta-analysis of five studies reported that the EA group was better than the Western medications group, improving the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score by 0.65 [95% CI 0.28~1.01] higher mean difference, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score by 0.66 [95% CI 0.00~1.32] higher mean difference. Adverse effects were not reported in the selected studies. Conclusion Electroacupuncture was an effective treatment for MCI patients by improving cognitive function. However, the included studies presented a low methodological quality and no adverse effects were reported. Thus, further comprehensive studies with a design in depth are needed to derive significant results.

Recent studies have demonstrated that seed-borne bacteria can enhance the performance of invasive plants in novel introduced habitats with environmental stresses. The effect of this plant-bacteria interaction may vary with plant species or even genotype; however, the genotype-dependent effects of seed bacteria have rarely been assessed. In this study, we examined the effects of bacterial strains isolated from seeds on the genotypes of an invasive xerophytic plant, Lactuca serriola. Plant genotypes were grown under drought conditions, and their plastic responses to bacterial infections were evaluated. Some genotypes produced more biomass, whereas others produced less biomass in response to infection with the same bacterial strain. Notably, the quantity of root-adhering soil depended on the bacterial treatment and plant genotypes and was positively correlated with the plastic responses of plant performance. Because tested bacteria could colonize the plant rhizosphere, bacterial infection appears to induce the differential formation of soil rhizosheaths among plant genotypes, consequently affecting the maintenance of soil water content under drought conditions. Given that drought tolerance is a critical attribute for the invasive success of L. serriola, these results imply that bacterial symbionts can facilitate the establishment of alien plant species, but their effects are likely genotype-specific.

Procrastination refers to voluntarily delay an intended course of action despite expecting that it might have negative consequences. It is usually assessed by self-reports, and the two most frequently used scales are the Pure Procrastination Scale (PPS) and the Irrational Procrastination Scale (IPS). The current study sought to investigate the reliability and validity of the two scales in Korean by translating the PPS from English and to reexamine a previous translation of the IPS. The aim is to promote further research on procrastination and to enhance a cross-cultural comprehension of the construct in different contexts. Hence, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted using data from 551 participants in a student and community sample. Convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were also assessed. A three-factor solution exhibited an adequate fit for the PPS; decisional procrastination, implemental procrastination, and timeliness and promptness, although a one-factor solution with only the implemental part performed equally well. Meanwhile, a one-factor solution exhibited a reasonable fit for the IPS. Both scales correlated moderately with anxiety, r = .36-.37, depression, r = .37-.38, self-efficacy, r = .-34 to −.38, and quality of life, r = −.32 to −.34, all in the expected directions, but not so for perfectionism, r =.09-.10. Internal consistencies, Cronbach’s α = .93 (the PPS) and.85 (the IPS), and test-retest reliabilities (two weeks), r = .88 (the PPS) and.83 (the IPS), were good. The findings indicate that the Korean versions might be reliable and valid for researching procrastination.

Unpaired fins, which are the most ancient form of locomotory appendages in chordates, had emerged at least 500 million years ago. While it has been suggested that unpaired fins and paired fins share structural similarities, cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the outgrowth of the former have not been fully elucidated yet. Using the ventral fin fold in zebrafish as a model, here, we investigate how the outgrowth of the unpaired fin is modulated. We show that Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) signaling restricts extension of the ventral fin fold along the proximodistal axis by modulating diverse aspects of cellular behaviors. We find that lack of BMP signaling, either caused by genetic or chemical manipulation, prolongs the proliferative capacity of epithelial cells and substantially increases the number of cells within the ventral fin fold. In addition, inhibition of BMP signaling attenuates the innate propensity of cell division along the anteroposterior axis and shifts the orientation of cell division toward the proximodistal axis. Moreover, abrogating BMP signaling appears to induce excessive distal migration of cells within the ventral fin fold, and therefore precipitates extension along the proximodistal axis. Taken together, our data suggest that BMP signaling restricts the outgrowth of the ventral fin fold during zebrafish development.

Water sources are currently facing great challenges from rapid population growth and industrial developments. Investigations into how to remove algal organic matter (AOM) are thus of great importance from an environmental point of view because most lakes and reservoirs in South Korea suffer from algae problems, especially in the summer. Many efforts have been made to remove AOM from the aquatic environment in South Korea. In this study, we focus on development of a new AOM removal system, utilizing waste oyster shells and ferrihydrite as the media of the filtration system. Using this system, the removal rate of AOM was investigated regarding the concentrations of chlorophyll a, total phosphorus, and alginate. It was found that about 92% of the total phosphorus was removed through this system when raw oyster shell powders were heated at 900°C to convert them into calcium oxide powders. The use of a continuous system also led to a reduction of 94.2% in total phosphorus, 78.8% in chlorophyll a, and 43.6% in alginate.

Petersen’s hernia is a rare internal hernia occurring after any type of gastrojejunal anastomosis. This type of internal hernia after laparoscopic gastrectomy with Rouxen-Y reconstruction for obesity treatment has been reported frequently. However, reports about Petersen’s hernia after gastrectomy with Billroth II gastrojejunostomy for gastric cancer are relatively rare. To diagnose internal hernia, whirl sign has been reported to be a sensitive predictor of internal hernia. However, it is hard to diagnose a specific type of internal hernia. We report a case of Petersen’s hernia after radical subtotal gastrectomy with Billroth II gastrojejunostomy for gastric cancer with an unreported specific computed tomography finding that suggests Petersen’s hernia.

Abstract In this study we examined the anti-leukemia activity of a small molecule inhibitor of Hsp70 proteins, apoptozole (Az), and hybrids in which it is linked to an inhibitor of either Hsp90 (geldanamycin) or Abl kinase (imatinib). The results of NMR studies revealed that Az associates with an ATPase domain of Hsc70 and thus blocks ATP binding to the protein. Observations made in the cell study indicated that Az treatment promotes leukemia cell death by activating caspase-dependent apoptosis without affecting the caspase-independent apoptotic pathway. Importantly, the hybrids composed of Az and geldanamycin, which have high inhibitory activities towards both Hsp70 and Hsp90, exhibit enhanced anti-leukemia activity relative to the individual inhibitors. However, the Az and imatinib hybrids have weak inhibitory activities towards Hsp70 and Abl, and display lower cytotoxicity against leukemia cells compared to those of the individual constituents. The results of a mechanistic study showed that the active hybrid molecules promote leukemia cell death through a caspase-dependent apoptotic pathway. Taken together, the findings suggest that Hsp70 inhibitors as well as their hybrids can serve as potential anti-leukemia agents.

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) techniques are effective for managing energy and for addressing imbalances between the energy demand and supply. Various studies based on deep learning have reported the classification of appliances from aggregated power signals. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called a temporal bar graph, which patternizes the operational status of the appliances and time in order to extract the inherent features from the aggregated power signals for efficient load identification. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a temporal bar graph was applied to the total power and tested on three state-of-the-art deep learning techniques that previously exhibited superior performance in image classification tasks—namely, Extreme Inception (Xception), Very Deep One Dimensional CNN (VDOCNN), and Concatenate-DenseNet121. The UK Domestic Appliance-Level Electricity (UK-DALE) and Tracebase datasets were used for our experiments. The results of the five-appliance case demonstrated that the accuracy and F1-score increased by 19.55% and 21.43%, respectively, on VDOCNN, and by 33.22% and 35.71%, respectively, on Xception. A performance comparison with the state-of-the-art deep learning methods and image-based spectrogram approach was conducted.

In the rapidly evolving healthcare environment, radiologists strive to establish their rightful place. Thus, there is a need for enhanced outpatient and clinical education within the Department of Radiology and exploration of its methodologies. Accordingly, the Korean Society of Radiology established a task force to investigate the clinical and outpatient practice status of radiologists overseas, current state of related education, involvement of other specialties in radiologic practices and education in Korea, and clinical and outpatient practice status among Korean radiologists. Furthermore, a survey on clinical competency enhancement was conducted among the members of the Korean Society of Radiology. These findings suggest the need for visibility and clinical competency enhancement in radiologists and methodologies for strengthening clinical competencies.

We analyzed the effect of alliin on the recovery of mouse testicular function and structure following estradiol treatment as well as on apoptosis regulation. During the cultivation of testicular cells, high-concentration estradiol suppressed Casp-3; PCNA, mTOR, and PI3K signaling increased; and cell proliferation in the testes was abnormally increased. Therefore, estradiol treatment increased the proportion of abnormal cells. The estradiol and 2.5 μM of alliin treatment increased Casp-3 levels and suppressed Bcl-2, PCNA, mTOR, and PI3K expression. Additionally, treatment with estradiol caused tissue loss. Furthermore, Ca2+ deposition decreased, TNF-r protein expression increased, and the levels of other protein markers of cell survival and death decreased. Tissue recovery and restoration of the testes occurred after alliin treatment; the gene expression of cell survival and death markers, except for TNF-r, increased with increasing Ca2+ deposition. Cell proliferation and tissue reorganization may correlate with an increased signal of intrinsic apoptosis owing to increased Ca2+ deposition. Therefore, treatment with alliin may regulate the apoptosis of cells with normal or abnormal signal transduction and help to revert testicular dysfunction.

Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells show remarkable efficacy for some hematological malignancies. However, CAR targets that are expressed at high level and selective to tumors are scarce. Several strategies have been proposed to tackle the on-target off-tumor toxicity of CAR-T cells that arise from suboptimal selectivity, but these are complicated, with many involving dual gene expression for specificity. In this study, we show that switchable CAR-T cells with a tumor targeting adaptor can mitigate on-target off-tumor toxicity against a low selectivity tumor antigen that cannot be targeted by conventional CAR-T cells, such as CD40. Our system is composed of anti-cotinine murine CAR-T cells and cotinine-labeled anti-CD40 single chain variable fragments (scFv), with which we show selective tumor killing while sparing CD40-expressing normal cells including macrophages in a mouse model of lymphoma. Simple replacement of the tumor-targeting adaptor with a suicidal drug-conjugated tag may further enhance safety by enabling permanent in vivo depletion of the switchable CAR-T cells when necessary. In summary, our switchable CAR system can control CAR-T cell toxicity while maintaining therapeutic efficacy, thereby expanding the range of CAR targets.

Abstract Tissue biofabrication mimicking organ-specific architecture and function requires physiologically-relevant cell densities. Bioprinting using spheroids can achieve this, but is limited due to the lack of practical, scalable techniques. This study presents HITS-Bio (High-throughput Integrated Tissue Fabrication System for Bioprinting), a multiarray bioprinting technique for rapidly positioning multiple spheroids simultaneously using a digitally-controlled nozzle array (DCNA). HITS-Bio achieves an unprecedented speed, ten times faster compared to existing techniques while maintaining high cell viability ( > 90%). The utility of HITS-Bio was exemplified in multiple applications, including intraoperative bioprinting with microRNA transfected human adipose-derived stem cell spheroids for calvarial bone regeneration ( ~ 30 mm3) in a rat model achieving a near-complete defect closure (bone coverage area of ~ 91% in 3 weeks and ~96% in 6 weeks). Additionally, the successful fabrication of scalable cartilage constructs (1 cm3) containing ~600 chondrogenic spheroids highlights its high-throughput efficiency (under 40 min per construct) and potential for repairing volumetric defects.

Abstract Probiotics have been shown to provide health benefits for several metabolic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), by modulating the gut microbiota. In this study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis CKDB001 as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of MASLD. We evaluated antibiotic resistance, hemolytic, gelatinase, and bile salt hydrolase activities, and the production of biogenic amines and D-lactate using in vitro analyses. We found that L. lactis CKDB001 treatment resulted in significant anti-adipogenic properties in the HepG2 cell line, reducing lipid accumulation and improving lipid profiles through mechanisms involving the upregulation of SIRT1 and PPARα, and downregulation of CD36 and ELOVL6. These results suggest that L. lactis CKDB001 is a safe and effective probiotic for managing MASLD. Further in vivo studies and clinical trials are required to validate these effects and fully elucidate their therapeutic potential and safety profiles.

Abstract Background Previous studies on the associations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and heavy metals with lipid profiles among adolescents have been scarce. We sought to investigate the associations of PFASs and heavy metals with blood lipid levels in a representative sample of Korean adolescents. Methods Data from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2018–2020) were used. Concentrations of PFASs [perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDeA)], lead, and mercury were measured in serum, whole blood, and urine samples, respectively. Linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and k-means clustering analyses were employed to evaluate the associations between pollutants and lipid levels. Results In the linear regression analyses, PFOA levels were associated with higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels; PFOS with higher total cholesterol (TC) levels; PFNA with higher TC, LDL-C, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels; PFDeA with higher TC, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels; and mercury with higher TC and non-HDL-C levels. The BKMR analysis revealed that the PFAS and heavy metal mixture was associated with higher LDL-C levels (1.8% increase in LDL-C at the 75th percentile of all PFAS and heavy metal concentrations compared to their median values, 95% credible interval: 0.5, 3.1), primarily driven by the effect of PFDeA. Compared to individuals in the low pollutant exposure cluster (geometric mean levels of PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, PFDeA, lead, and mercury were 2.7 μg/L, 6.2 μg/L, 1.6 μg/L, 0.7 μg/L, 0.4 μg/L, 0.8 μg/dL, and 0.3 μg/L, respectively), those in the high pollutant exposure cluster (5.1 μg/L, 10.7 μg/L, 3.7 μg/L, 1.3 μg/L, 0.6 μg/L, 0.9 μg/dL, and 0.4 μg/L, respectively) demonstrated higher TC levels (2.5% increase in TC, 95% confidence interval: 0.1, 5.0) in the k-means clustering analysis. Conclusion Due to the limitations of this study, such as its cross-sectional design, these results should be interpreted cautiously and confirmed in future studies before drawing implications for public health strategies aimed at promoting health during adolescence and later in life.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and immune system dysregulation, with significant needs due to the limitations and adverse effects of current treatments. In this study, we sought to discover novel herbal candidates and their active compounds for psoriasis by leveraging a multiscale network analysis. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of data from 348 medicinal herbs and their active compounds, identifying Piperis longi fructus, Pini koraiensis semen, Schisandrae fructus, and Cnidi fructus as top candidates without reported evidence. Key active compounds, such as piperine, piperlongumine, α-humulene, schizandrin A, schizandrin II, and torilin, were prioritized for their ability to target psoriasis-associated proteins, including STAT3, TNF, IL-6, and NF-κB. These compounds are involved in the modulation of critical inflammatory pathways, notably the MAPK signaling cascade, which plays a central role in psoriasis pathogenesis. Our findings suggest that these herbal compounds may not only mitigate inflammation but also regulate keratinocyte hyperproliferation, addressing fundamental mechanisms underlying the disease. This approach highlights the utility of multiscale network analysis in identifying promising natural therapies, offering new insights and potential avenues for safer and more effective psoriasis management.

The aim of this study was to determine anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity of 20 different grape varieties, using HPLC and DPPH, FRAP and ABTS assays, respectively. The identified anthocyanins were malvidin-3-glucoside, delphinidin-3-glucoside, petunidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3 glucoside, and peonidin-3-glucoside on the basis of their retention times. Comparatively the total anthocyanin content varied from 181.2 mg/100 g FW (‘Vidal Black’) to 716.4 mg/ 100 g FW (‘Catawba’). High anthocyanin content was found in ‘Catawba’ (716.4 mg/100 g), ‘Ruby Seedless’ (634.5 mg/100 g) and ‘Campbell Early’ (611.1 mg/100 g) extracts. The antioxidant activities of grape extracts varied from 32.8% (‘Campbell Early’) to 87.6% (‘Hongiseul’) by DPPH, 79.1% (‘Campbell Early’) to 197% (‘Hongiseul’) in case of FRAP and 11.1% (‘Chasselas Rouge’) to 74.5% (‘Flouxa’) by ABTS antioxidant assay. The results suggested that the anthocyanin content in studied grape varieties showed statistically significant correlation with free radical scavenging activity. Thus depending on results we say that these grape varieties may serve as a potential source of nutraceuticals and functional food development.

We have investigated dissolution and surface reaction of calcite and aragonite in amino acid solutions of L-glutamic (L-glu) and L-aspartic acid (L-asp) at weak acidity of above pH 3. The surface reactions of calcite and aragonite were related with the dissolution. Calcite was dissolved in both solutions but the dissolution was limited by an adsorption of Ca-carboxylate salt. Aragonite was neither dissolved nor reacted in amino acid solutions because the crystal surface consisted of a hard to dissolve structure.
